Saucy ribs, dance bands, and creative kids will converge at Estero Community Park on March 23 for the Third Annual BBQ & Family FunFest.
This signature fundraising event of the Rotary Club of Estero has grown each year and also incorporates the Estero Festival of the Arts and Rotary’s Day of Smiles.
The eight-hour event will feature live entertainment from noon to 6 p.m. from Cahlua and Cream, the Calendar Girls, We Ain’t Right, Dead Letter Society, and Jeffery Lawrence. The Tim McGeary Band returns with its country and acoustic music, having played at the fi rst Estero BBQ Fest two years ago.
All entertainers are donating their time to help the Rotary Club raise money to support children’s charities, says entertainment chair Denise Bernardi. Past charities supported by the BBQ Fest include Barbara’s Friends, The Children’s Hospital Cancer Fund, and Children Without and Gift of Life. The Estero Rotary Club also provided several children with free dental care last year through its fi rst Day of Smiles.
This year’s Day of Smiles will begin
just before the BBQ Fest and will involve the RotaKids, a group of third and fourth graders from Three Oaks Elementary. A nurse from the Bonita Community Health Center will show proper hand-washing and teeth-brushing techniques, and then the RotaKids will help pack pinto beans and rice for Interfaith Charities of South Lee.
“The children love doing anything hands-on,” says Katy Errington, Day of Smiles founder. “We’re trying to teach them the art of helping others.”
That’s the mission of Rotary Club.“We started planning immediately
after the last BBQ Fest,” says Joe Faerber, Chairman of the Estero Rotary Club.
Several local BBQ vendors will vie for fi rst place in the Best Ribs competition. New this year, attendees may vote for their favorite vendor as part of a People’s Choice Award.
Corvettes of Naples will be back with their classic cars and will be joined by the Gulf Shore Mustang Club this year. Raffl e tickets will be sold throughout the event for six gift baskets. amd the winner will be drawn around 6 p.m.

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS AT FUNFEST
Students from six area schools will be exhibiting their finest work during the BBQ festival as part of the Estero Festival of the Arts, organized by retired art teacher Beverly MacNellis.
Art teachers from Estero High School, Three Oaks Middle School, San Carlos Elementary, Three Oaks Elementary, Pinewoods Elementary and Rayma C. Page Elementary have each selected 20 pieces of artwork to enter for the festival.
“The goal is to applaud the creative efforts of our youth, to encourage them and reward them for being different and one of a kind,” MacNellis said.
Thanks to sponsorships from the Estero Community Improvement Fund and Extra Space Storage, there will be monetary prizes for top entries this year.
Along with the mixed media entries, MacNellis also has arranged for fi fth grade students to decorate wooden birdhouses for a special contest recognizing creativity. About 100 uniquely decorated birdhouses will be on display at the festival.
“They may use paint, cut paper, sticks, stones, any thing they want,” MacNellis said. “Art allows students to think out of the box. Art allows them to stand alone and be recognized.”

I can’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve heard an overweight person tell me, “I don’t understand, I barely even eat!” Well, let’s assume they’re telling me the truth – and not closet-eating to the point of putting themselves into a sugar coma. Their metabolism is what controls their ability to gain and lose weight. While there’s some
truth to certain people being born with a faster metabolism – and genetics does play a part – the metabolism can be trained just like muscles. It can learn to speed up and become a more effi cient tool to help you lose unwanted fat. And keep it off.
Here’s how…
1. AVOID CRASH DIETSThese fad diets are designed to make you lose weight
quickly – at the cost of your hard-earned fat-burning muscle. My father used to go on the Atkins diet to lose his 10 pounds, but then he’d always gain it back – and go on another diet. One day I asked him, “Dad, don’t you think if it was a good diet, you wouldn’t have to keep going back on it”? His silence was the answer I was looking for. Crash diets cause you to lose a high percentage of muscle, which will backfi re because more muscle is the best way to burn fat. Which leads me to…
2. BUILD MUSCLEThere’s simply no way around it. People who weight-train
have faster metabolisms than those who don’t. Consider this: One pound of muscle can burn up to 60 calories a day at total rest. A pound of fat burns only 9 calories per day. Do the math.
3. TRAIN YOUR METABOLISMBasically, you need to eat fi ve small meals a day – about
one every three hours. Start as early as possible in the morning, even if you don’t like eating at that time. I don’t even care what you’re eating in the beginning. Just get the body used to putting food in at the same time every morning. After 10 days of doing that, you’ll wake up hungry. Then you can work on the quality of the breakfast. Then work on your next meal three hours later the same way. Remember, the body burns more calories digesting protein than carbohydrates.
4. WATERThe body needs water to process calories. Even a mild
dehydration can slow your metabolism down. Also try and eat fruits and vegetables instead of chips and pretzels – they have a lot of fl uid in them as well as being healthier.

What do you imagine when you hear that ubiquitous saying “The South”? Do you envision Gone With The Wind-era antebellum mansions? Preserved plantations laced with history? Perhaps you can almost hear the slow drawl of the expressions “y’all” and “bless your heart”.
After all, those things do capture the nostalgia and charm of the quintessential South.
But there are many destinations below the Mason Dixon line that offer world class art, architecture, cuisine and culture sprinkled with just the right dose of Dixie. And that magical combination is especially evident in the cities of Asheville, St. Augustine, Savannah and Charleston.
Asheville’s downtown is full of vibrant energy. Street musicians entertain visitors and residents alike. Poetry readings can be heard from local coffee houses. Art galleries dot the streets. The food scene is worth a trip itself, as Asheville is home to the world’s fi rst Foodtopia society. With over 20 farmers markets and
250 independent restaurants, fresh food is the standard, regardless of price range.
A few miles from the city center, as you meander through the mountains, a gorgeous landscape unfolds. The 250 room Biltmore House, America’s largest home, is worth at least one day of your visit. Biltmore’s surrounding resort and gardens comprise one of the most luxurious estates in North America, especially during the Christmas Holidays. Not far from the Biltmore, The Grove Park Inn’s spa is the indisputable leader in spa services.
If you are a nature enthusiast, and you need to expend some of those gourmet calories, Asheville has an amazing array of active pursuits, including bike and hike trails, fi shing, snow skiing and white water rafting.
St. Augustine exudes a totally different, but just as enthralling vibe. As the nation’s oldest city, it is rich with the history of its earliest Spanish inhabitants. Visits
“THE SOUTH
is more than a
region…it’s a state of
mind.”
travel
to the Fort and the Fountain of Youth should top your list of “Must Sees and Must Dos”. The hop on and off trolley provides an easy way to explore the amazing architecture.
Seemingly misnamed, a true savannah is treeless, whereas the City of Savannah is abundant with majestic live oaks and budding azaleas that line its streets and frame its squares. Known as the “Hostess City of the South,” the charming bed and breakfast accommodations found in historic mansions across town have played an important role in earning Savannah its hospitable reputation, and are unquestionably the best way to achieve a truly worthwhile experience of Savannah. With a distinct colonial European feel, Savannah has a truly unique ambience, unlike anywhere else in America.
The cobblestone sidewalks of famous River Street are adorned with upscale restaurants and eclectic boutiques and galleries. Everything in Savannah has a history and River Street is no exception. A trip to Savannah would not be complete without taking in a tour of at least one of its historic mansions, each with an incredible story to tell, and brilliant architecture to see. Many visitors to Savannah claim that the full splendor of these magnifi cent homes can only be witnessed in person.
Last but not least, the heart of the South.....Charleston, South Carolina. The southern charm, grace, and beauty of this historic city are so breathtaking that most travelers feel as if they’ve stepped back in time. And although the historic parts of Charleston are almost limitless, the high-end shopping, fi ve-star cuisine and art culture give a modern, chic twist to the city that blends the new effortlessly with the old. If you have an appreciation for history and a passion for food, Charleston is the ultimate southern destination.
Downtown Charleston is much like a charming European city; the best way to experience the peninsula is by foot. A stroll around the residential areas of downtown will reveal secret gardens and alleyways, intricate iron gates by master craftsmen, and pristine nineteenth century mansions. After strolling the neighborhoods, meander to King Street for your shopping fi x. King
Street is the center for retail commerce in Charleston, and is divided into three distinct districts: Lower King is the antique district, Middle King is the fashion district, and Upper King is more recently known as the design district, which hosts design walks in the spring and fall to celebrate this “Soho of the South.”
Charleston has become the new food capital of the South, combining fresh produce available all year long, chefs who are fanatical about the quality of their ingredients and a budding commitment to sourcing the freshest local ingredients. Soul, Classic Southern and Gullah infl uences, its proximity to the ocean, and extended growing season all help to develop an eclectic and vibrant culinary melting pot.
If you’re looking for a Southern getaway and want the true local immersion, the team at SitInMySeats VIP Tickets & Travel can offer you an experience like no other. With an offi ce located in the heart of the Carolina’s, staffed with authentic Southern Belle’s, this team KNOWS and LOVES the sweet South with a passion!

InteriorDesignDesigning Your Dream Rooms with Help from the Pros
Your home should refl ect who you are and provide a sanctuary from life’s chaos. But fi nding your own “design style” isn’t always easy.
Fortunately, Estero residents have convenient access to many helpful resources. One trip to Miromar Design Center is sure to spawn a multitude of ideas for making a statement with your interior spaces. And, if staying within a budget is a concern, the Posh Plum offers like-new, designer furniture at a fraction of the original retail cost.
“We have highly professional, very outgoing and friendly people, and the way we stage our showroom sets us apart,” says General Manager Greg Hunt, who formerly worked for Robb & Stucky and Ralph Lauren Home. He prides himself on grouping complementary pieces from different consigners to create a unifi ed look.
As guests meander through the showroom at either the Naples or Bonita location, they may stroll through a modern living room with sleek lines and minimalist feel, then step into a regal bedroom with rich wood and stunning details.
The Posh Plum is not your average consignment shop. Hunt and his crew of interior designers and furniture-industry veterans are quite discriminating when determining which furnishings to accept for their showrooms. They also carry designer bedding, lamps and other interesting accents to complete a look.
On a recent visit to the newly opened Naples store, a Marge Carson dining room table with 78-
inch beveled glass top and eight chairs was selling for $6,000. It originally retailed for $20,000, Hunt says.
With the downturn in the economy, many people are looking to refresh their interior spaces, or furnish a second home, without breaking the bank. Others need to sell furnishings.
“We’re really the middle man for you,” Hunt explains. “This way, you don’t have strangers coming to your home.”
Just because clients are shopping for second-hand goods doesn’t mean they’ll be treated like second-rate customers. Posh Plum employs several interior designers to help shoppers fi nd just the right pieces to create their desired style.
In the future, the Posh Plum may bring in fabric swatches and offer re-upholstery services to further cater to customers’ unique needs, Hunt says.
Interior designers play a major role in helping overwhelmed customers navigate through the innumerable options at Miromar Design Center. As a one-stop-shop for all things home, the Design Center may be a bit daunting, offering more than 100,000 fabrics choices.
While the Design Center serves many professionals, it always has been open to the public. When CEO Margaret Antonier opened the center in 2006, she was on the cutting edge of a trend to make interior design more accessible to everyday people.
“Miromar Design Center was the fi rst of the 19

major interior design centers in the country to be open to the public,” Antonier says. “All design centers have now moved in a similar direction. We are consistently bringing in new and different lines of product including an assortment of accessories, antiques and lighting, which are all very important.”
Within the last year, Miromar has added a number of new showrooms, brands and international lines, including Calvin Klein Home, Ligne Roset, Flexform, Dedon, Yves Delorne and Mis En Demeure.
“Our goal is to be the fi rst – and only – stop for hassle-free shopping, convenience and excellence, all in one location,” Antonier says.
Recently, the Design Center has picked up on a trend of consumers who want to be more involved in the interior design process.
“They are focusing more time on home décor and paying more attention to their daily surroundings and the way they live,” Antonier notes. “They’re also looking to interior designers for their expertise in executing what they want and helping to facilitate the entire process.”
To help make the experience enjoyable,
Miromar not only keeps a designer on call but also regularly hosts free design seminars. Drawing from the concept of “speed dating,” the lively “Seminar in the Round” format lets guests cycle through mini-seminars, experiencing a

The three-minute format serves as an informal introduction to the style of a specifi c designer. Those who want to pursue a second date, so to speak, are invited to visit that particular store within the impressive halls of Miromar Design Center. It’s an architectural marvel, with three stories, a central grand atrium and glass-front stores, all with picture perfect attention to detail.
Miromar Design Center boasts 45 furniture stores, along with retailers specializing in lighting, fl oors and everything in between. Last month, the Design Center hosted its annual Home Design Show, drawing hundreds of visitors during the three-day extravaganza.
For March, the Design Center will showcase the “Best of the Best Bedrooms.” Sixteen Dream Rooms will be on display, with a “Sleep in Style” seminar-in-the-round scheduled for March 9.
To start imagining your next “dream room,” visit the design professionals at Miromar Design Center or Posh Plum. The possibilities are boundless.

Your master bedroom should be the one room in your home where you can fi nd a
sense of calm. It should feel like a retreat – a place to get away from the kids and
the stress of the workday. For couples, the master bedroom should be inviting and
cozy, with a hint of romance. For the best outcome, think in terms of all fi ve senses:
Create a Romantic Bedroom Retreat
BY CREASHA WEGLARZ, ASID
SIGHT: Visually, like every room you design, your bedroom should feel inviting. Soft , fl uff y bedding and billowy drapery fabrics will add a warm, inviting touch. Good lighting accents art and beautiful fabrics, and of course, it’s needed for reading.
SOUND: Music can set the tone for a relaxing or romantic atmosphere. iPods and other audio-video equipment are essential elements to your bedroom.
SMELL: Aromatic scents add a beautiful, subtle, scent to your bedroom. Th is will add a sensual element to your room. Certain scents, such as lavender aid in relaxation. If you have had a massage in a spa, I am sure you have enjoyed this aromatic technology for relaxation therapy.
TOUCH: Th e body appreciates the feeling of being enveloped in fi ne linens – whether they are made of high quality linen or silk.
TASTE: Hotels supply a chocolate with their “turn-down service.” You can do the same with a chocolate, a sugar free peppermint, or a glass of wine.

Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox fans will bring a boost to the local economy this month as they fl ock to Lee County for an early look at their favorite teams.
Whether they’ve planned vacations to coincide with spring training or live full time in Southwest Florida, baseball afi cionados anticipate the excitement of the preseason games.
This year, spring training starts a little earlier and stretches a few days longer, with the Red Sox season opener at JetBlue Park against the Huskies on Feb. 21. The Twins play away on Feb. 23 and open at home against the Tampa Bay Rays on Feb. 24.
This year marks the 125th anniversary of Major League Baseball spring training in the state of Florida, with the fi rst team to train in Fort Myers being the Philadelphia Athletics in 1925. The Twins came to Lee County in 1991, followed by the Red Sox in 1993.
Both the Red Sox and the Twins draw sellout crowds to most of their games each spring. This year, the two hometown teams will face off eight times, evenly split between Hammond Stadium and JetBlue Park.
“It’s a little rivalry for the area,” says Andrew Seymour, the Twins’ General Manager for spring training operations. “Hopefully, we’ll win fi ve and they win three.”
The Twins and Red Sox have historically battled for

the “Mayor’s Cup” each spring, although the Red Sox have now moved outside the Fort Myers city limits with their new facility.
Known as Fenway South, JetBlue Park opened with much fanfare last spring, increasing seating capacity by 26 percent. The $78 million complex on 106 acres east of I-75 on Daniels Road allowed the Red Sox to build state-of-the-art training and practice facilities together with a stadium modeled after Fenway Park.
“It’s such a dramatic upgrade from our old facility across town,” said Katie Haas, the Red Sox Director of Florida Operations.
She encourages fans to take time to appreciate all the
nods to Red Sox history incorporated into the ballpark designed to mirror Fenway, complete with Ted Williams’ red chair, the “Green Monster” and a Red Sox Wall of Fame.
“Get to the ballpark early, walk around and see all the historical touches we’ve done,” Haas advised. “We pay homage to Fenway the best we can.”
Twins fans also will get an upgraded facility soon, as the Twins organization and the county have agreed upon a $42.5 million renovation at the Lee County Sports Complex and Hammond Stadium, to be completed by 2015.
“It’s going to be terrific, both for viewing and accessibility,” Seymour said.
Planned improvements include more shade, a 360-degree boardwalk around the outfi eld fence, increased dining options, wider concourses and improved traffi c fl ow. From a player perspective, new training room and fi tness training facilities will be installed, including video technology and hydrotherapy pools.
The earliest sellout game for both the Twins and the Red Sox is traditionally against the New York Yankees. The Red Sox play the Yankees on March 3, while the Twins face New York on March 22.
A Minnesota game against St. Louis drew the Twins’ biggest crowd last year, a record 8,287. With the increased seating capacity at JetBlue Park, the Red Sox averaged attendance of 9,464 per game last spring. There is a waiting list of up to 10 years for Red Sox spring season tickets.
A 2009 study commissioned by the Red Sox showed the ball club brought $25 million to the local economy during the six weeks of spring training – and that was before JetBlue Park opened, Haas says.
The only complaints she has heard about the new facility concerned parking and traffi c, issues that the staff has improved this spring. “Hopefully it will be easier and better for fans this year,” Haas says.
Following every Friday night home game at Fenway South, the country band One Night Rodeo will perform a free post-game concert.
“We fi nd Friday night games are more of a local crowd, so it’s a nod of appreciation to them,” Haas says.
One of the fun things about attending a variety of games is mingling with visitors from all over the United States and Canada, Seymour adds.
“If you walk through the parking lot when we play the Blue Jays, you will see a lot of cars with Canadian license plates,” he says. “When we play the Orioles, there are a lot of visitors from the Atlantic Seaboard.”
Best tips for avoiding traffi c at either ballpark include arriving early to games.
“Gates open three hours prior to fi rst pitch, so there is an opportunity to watch batting practice, sample some great ballpark fare and take in all the beautiful sights,” Seymour says.

Rising with the trend toward healthy living, Mother Earth Natural Foods has been serving the Southwest Florida market since 1988. When Rodger Hurcomb opens his sixth Mother Earth store in Estero, it will be the largest one yet.
The 4,000-square-foot store is scheduled to open in the Shoppes of Estero this spring, selling multivitamins, enzyme supplements, diet products, probiotics, and other natural foods and products.
Mother Earth was one of the fi rst natural foods stores to enter the local market, growing with the area.
“It was not only the increase in population in Southwest Florida but also people taking health into their own hands,” explains Hurcomb, who left a transportation job in Connecticut
Eating healthy, staying wiseto start the business in Cape Coral. “A lot of people were changing to become healthier.”
That included Hurcomb himself, who at the time had a young family accustomed to the American lifestyle of fast food.
“I didn’t know much about healthy foods, so I started investigating,” says Hurcomb, who is now known as Mr. Vitamin. “Now my young adult children have gravitated to this lifestyle, too.”
Hurcomb says he’s encouraged by the recent trend of schools eliminating foods with high sugar and fat content. One reason he decided to open a location in Estero was to be closer to Florida Gulf Coast University.
“A lot of students want to live a healthy lifestyle,” he says. “They’ll take the effort to become healthier and stay healthier.”
One of the best parts of his job is being able to educate people and help them on their journey toward that healthier lifestyle.
“We have an excellent, knowledgeable staff that has been with us for many years, and they actually live this lifestyle,” Hurcomb says. “They want to impart their knowledge to customers who are seeking knowledge.”
Hurcomb calls the natural foods industry an “open, friendly, community type of business,” listening carefully to each customer’s unique concerns and recommending the best products among an amazing assortment of supplements.
“We always try to have good karma in the store,” Hurcomb says. “We want people to enjoy being in the store and make it a good experience to be with Mother Earth.”

Tanglewood: What the locals don’t know
Tanglewood restaurant represents the best of dining, combining creative cuisine with attentive service in a relaxing yet elegant atmosphere.
One of two restaurants at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort, Tanglewood is one of the best-kept secrets in local fi ne dining. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Tanglewood is a favorite of resort guests but little known among Estero residents.
It’s time for that to change. Tanglewood recently launched a new dinner menu that rivals any fi ne-dining establishment in the area, including its sister restaurant, Tarpon Bay (featured in our September 2012 issue), which often steals the Hyatt’s dinner crowd, opening at 5:30 every evening and offering succulent seafood cuisine.
Tanglewood Chef Jamie Celaya has worked hard to refresh his restaurant’s offerings, bringing an emphasis on healthful, Mediterranean-inspired fare.
“We had to get away from baked potatoes and mashed potatoes every day,” he says. The Hyatt corporation has adopted a restaurant philosophy: “Food. Thoughtfully Sourced. Carefully Served.”
Celaya was challenged to create dishes using as many locally sourced and sustainably farmed ingredients as possible. He has toured several local farms, scrutinizing the origin of all his fresh products. The fruits and vegetables incorporated into Tanglewood’s elegant dishes vary seasonally, ensuring the best fl avor and nutritional
benefi t while limiting the restaurant’s carbon footprint.Celaya recently received a shipment of wild green
onions – which was fortunate for us, as it inspired him to concoct a new dish, an Asian green onion consommé with pork dumpling, pickled mushrooms and fried leeks.
While you can’t fi nd this on the dinner menu, you will fi nd plenty of other palate pleasers. Celaya has incorporated infl uences from Spain, France and Italy to create elegant and fl avorful meals.
We began our evening with a “small bite” to whet the appetite. The chef presented a pan-seared sea scallop paired with savory, crusty pancetta, served over truffl e caulifl ower puree and garnished with lemon-dressed pea tendrils.
Next, our party of four shared the White Flatbread, featuring local heirloom tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, parsley, micro-basil, ricotta and parmesan cheese. Those with food allergies will be glad to know this fl atbread is gluten-free. The staff at Tanglewood will tailor menu items to meet any special dietary needs.
Before our main course arrived, we enjoyed two of the restaurant’s creative salads. The Roasted Hearts of Palm stars two classic Florida crops, oranges and palm cabbage. Attractively plated over baby arugula and paired with avocado slices, toasted almonds and roasted tomato vinaigrette, this salad is a refreshing starter.
The Arugula Salad with Roasted Stone Fruit also

features fresh, seasonal offerings, varying among whichever pitted fruit is ripe and ready. Our salad starred the peach, delightfully paired with Turtle Creek goat cheese, topped with toasted pine nuts and drizzled with lemon vinaigrette.
For our entrees, two of us chose Tanglewood’s premier dinner selection: the Steak and Crab Diane. A juicy, all-natural 10-ounce strip steak is paired with a meaty crab cake, accompanied by fingerling potatoes creamed spinach. The real magic is in the zippy Diane sauce, a creamy dijon reduction sauce with mushrooms, shallots, beef stock and brandy.
While most historians attribute the name to the Roman “goddess of the hunt” Diana, our server, Rich, wove a much more colorful tale about a legendary brothel owner named Diane who was famous among pirates for her cooking. Wherever the name originates, Diane certainly knows how to make a mean steak sauce!
Others in the group tried the Broiled Florida Grouper (with seasonal vegetable ragout and roasted tomato vinaigrette) and the Seared Diver Sea Scallops (served over eggplant puree with cucumber-apricot salsa),and both were
scrumptious.For dessert, we sampled three
of Tanglewood’s delightful endings. The classic Key Lime Pie takes an indulgent twist with an Oreo cookie crust below and candied citrus peel on top, while the Black Forest Tart proved irresistible with three cylindrical layers of creamy Bing cherry and dark chocolate goodness.
Perhaps the most creative dessert on the platter was the Port Wine Poached Pear, infused with cinnamon, glazed with chocolate and fi lled with sweet mascarpone cream. A memorable ending to a lovely evening out.
Favorites from Tanglewood’s lunch
menu include Paella – a fl avorful blend of saffron rice, spanish chorizo, mussels, braised chicken and peas – and the ever popular Open Face Flat Iron Steak and Egg Sandwich.
Tanglewood serves breakfast from 6:30-11 a.m., lunch from 11:30-3 p.m. and dinner from 5:30-10 p.m. daily. The restaurant features prime rib on Sundays. The Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort is located at the west end of Coconut Road, featuring a boardwalk to the bay and several lovely water features.
A moonlit stroll or quiet talk by the fi re pit make the perfect ending to a night out at Tanglewood.

BRUCE TURKEL
Do you know where good ideas come from? Don’t feel bad, neither do I.
Surprising, perhaps, considering my advertising agency is responsible for coming up with great ideas for our clients every single day.
I know how to present ideas. I know how to sell ideas. And like the blind pig
fi nding the occasional truffl e, I even create some good ones now and again. I just don’t know where they come from.
What I do know is that new ideas, good and bad, are very fragile and easy to scare away. And once you frighten them, others don’t show up. Just think of yourself as Elmer Fudd sneaking through the woods. “Shhhh, be vewy vewy qwiet, I’m hunting theowies.”
The other thing I know is that ideas don’t suffer criticism well. That’s not to say that all ideas are good ideas and should be used, only that criticizing ideas at the same time you’re trying to come up with them is the way to make sure you don’t come up with any more. And fi nally, I know that shooting down new ideas is the quickest way to prove that they won’t ever work.
Plenty of people will shoot down your ideas, whether they realize it or not. And so you have to be on constant alert, vigilant to the telltale signs of idea killing. I call it concepticide….
Con-CEP-ti-cide n.
1. The act of murdering one’s ideas.2. One who murders one’s ideas.
Like a feral cat hunkering down before it pounces on an unwitting bird, concepticidal maniacs clearly telegraph their intentions, both with body- and spoken-language markers. Here are some of the giveaways…
1. ROLLING EYESConcepticides often initiate their attacks with signs of frustration at having to explain why your idea will never work. While you’re alert, keep an eye peeled for shrugged shoulders, shaking heads and waved hands. They’re all ways Concepticides let you know that your ideas are no good.
2. COMMENTS DESIGNED TO DISCLAIM PROVIDENCE. As in, “I don’t know anything about copywriting, but…” Well, if you don’t know anything about copywriting (or whatever), then why are you qualifi ed to comment on it? I don’t know anything about Bulgarian tort reform either, but I don’t offer my opinion on it.
3. DAMNING YOUR IDEA WITH FAINT PRAISE......and then moving on to the criticism portion of their diatribe with, “however” or “but.” Example? Saying, “That’s a great idea, but…” The simple truth is that “however” and “but” negate anything that was said before.
4. OFFERING CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISMConstructive criticism is hardly the former and almost always the latter.
5. THE SOUND OF FRYING EGGSThat’s the little sizzling sound critics make with their mouths when they want to make it subtly obvious that they’re not happy your ideas. That’s where the Spanish saying, “No frieír huevos” (don’t fry eggs) comes from. Frying eggs usually goes hand in hand with rolling eyes.
6. HISTORICAL REFERENCESAs in, “We’ve already tried that, it doesn’t work.” The interesting thing about this type of concepticide is that it’s seldom accurate, mostly because your critic doesn’t usually wait until you’re fi nished presenting your idea before their heads start shaking. Funny thing is, when they do let you fi nish, what you’ll fi nd is that the idea they tried years ago is usually different from what you’re proposing.
7. SHOWING OFFThe other way to know when concepticides are getting ready to pounce is when their superiors ask them for opinions and they’re in a position to show off. The equation is elementary: When Concepticides compliment you on your idea, they hear themselves saying, “You’re smart.” But when they shoot down your ideas, they’re telling their boss or their client that they’re smart and good to have around. After all, if they just left it up to you, who knows what crazy ideas you’d come up with?
Bruce Turkel is a branding expert who’s been
featured on CNN, NPR, and The New York Times.
