Solemnity of ST. JOSEPH, Spouse

of the Blessed Virgin Mary March 19th

St. Joseph was an ordinary manual laborer although descended from the royal house of David. In the de-signs of Providence he was destined to become the spouse of the Mother of God. His high privi-

lege is expressed in a single phrase, "Foster-father of Jesus." About him Sacred Scripture has little more to say than that he was a just man-an ex-pression which indicates how faithfully he fulfilled his high trust of protecting and guarding God's greatest treasures upon earth, Jesus and Mary.

At present there are two major feasts in his honor. On March 19 our veneration is directed to him personally and to his part in the work of re-demption, while on May 1 we honor him as the patron of workmen.

St. Joseph is invoked as patron for many causes. He is the patron of the Universal Church. He is the patron of the dying because Jesus and Mary were at his death-bed. He is also the patron of fathers, of carpenters, and of social justice.

THE POWER OF FASTING AND PRAYER

Prayer is a two-way communication between you and God. It is having a con-versation and relationship with God. It is the spirit of humanity making contact with the Spirit of Divinity, and is a powerful force when activated and set in motion.

It is so important to practice a consistent, consecrated lifestyle of prayer unto God. Your personal relationship with God is first priority. Such a daily commitment greater positions you to have power with God in prayer. First Thessalonians 5:17 says “Pray without ceasing.” Be in a continual attitude of prayer. Be sensitive to the voice of God at all times. Respond when He moves upon you to pray or intercede. God reveals Him-self to us in prayer. We help to develop our relationship with God through prayer. We must be committed to God in prayer.

It is imperative to visualize the desired re-sults in prayer. The Scripture declares, “Building up your most Holy Faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” When one prays in the Spirit by speaking with tongues they are edifying their faith towards God to answer their prayers. Respond to God when His Spirit moves upon you to pray. Make your request, activate your faith, and believe God for the answer. “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24).

Fasting, coupled with prayer, is a powerful weapon (Daniel 9:3, Mark 9:29; Acts 2:42). It brings humility to the human nature and propagates greater sensitivity to the spiri-tual realm. It is an act of surrender and self-denial of the flesh in exchange for a greater revelation of Jesus Christ.

The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, and fasting sharpens that sword, making it more effective. Fasting complements prayer. It brings powerful transformation. It ushers personal and global revival and transcends to those around us. Consecration brings revela-tion, and revelation brings demonstration! Isaiah 58:6-14 relays the purpose for fasting: looses the bands of wickedness; unties heavy burdens; frees the oppressed; breaks every yoke; produces compassion for the needy; provides an entrance to the presence of God; hastens an answer from God; brightens one’s path; repairs breaches and gaps; grants spiri-tual understanding; brings deliverance and victory; activates godly authority; and more. The power of prayer and fasting has no lim-its…so adopt it as a lifestyle, and practice it consistently. In doing so, expect unlimited results!

A WORTHLESS WOMAN

The Gospel Reading tells the story of a woman who is worthless by the stan-dards of Jewish society at that time.

Jesus has sent his disciples off for food, and he is sitting at a well when she comes to draw water. There is every reason why he shouldn’t talk to her at all.

First, she is a woman. It is only the disci-ples’ awe of Jesus that keeps them from asking him what he thought he was doing when they return and find him talking to her without even a chaperone by her.

Secondly, she is a Samaritan. As she her-self points out to him, Jews don’t talk to

Samaritans. Samaritans are self-made out-casts from the Jewish point of view, and self-respecting Jews stay away from them.

And, thirdly, this Samaritan has the sort of history that makes women pariahs even in their home communities. Jesus knows her status, and he lets her know he does. She has had five husbands—five husbands!—and she is currently living with a man to whom she is not married. Even by the lax standards of our own day, this sort of history would make people look askance at her. In her village she is undoubtedly a shamed person.

So, take it all and all, she’s a worthless per-son, isn’t she? What Jew or Samaritan would want to invite her to lunch?

But, you might be thinking, the savior of the world could certainly spare a crumb even for a shamed Samaritan woman. He could preach to her that her sins are forgiven, you might be supposing, or he could offer her some other kind of pastoral help.

But he doesn’t, does he? No, he asks her to help him. He opens the conversation with her by asking her to give him a drink.

And then look at how this story ends: she brings belief in Jesus to her village, and the villagers come to Jesus because of her.

She isn’t worthless then, is she? No, then she takes her rightful place among the apostles. The evangelization of her village is her ac-complishment.

And so when Jesus asks her to care for him, he starts a process that brings her from be-ing worthless to being the apostle to her vil-lage.

The remedy of love for human worthlessness is modeled for us here, isn’t it?
