Investigation and the Cultivation of Joy For Plantation Village – March 2020

Catherine Ibsen, Ph. D., RYT 500

An important mental training in the Buddhist tradition is the cultivation and maintenance of wholesome mind states and the prevention and abandoning of unwholesome ones. Wholesome states are the conditions for freedom and happiness and unwholesome ones are the conditions for misery. Mindfulness and investigation are basic tools for identifying which conditions are associated with which results. We can’t just ‘will’ ourselves to be happy. It has to be real, to be authentic, to inhabit our whole body, and to be stable and long lasting. At first, mindfulness helps us remember to just notice states of joy or happiness as they happen to us. We notice that it feels pleasant in our body. We may be warm, relaxed, or at ease. We notice with pleasure the things around us, a glistening drop of dew on a soft pink flower petal, the sound of a symphony of frogs, the smell of fresh mowed grass. We notice the thoughts that arise. “What a lovely sound. I am happy now. This is a pleasant experience.” Mindfulness enhances that experience of enjoyment. When we practice with investigation, an aspect of the fourth domain of mindfulness, we are not just being

mindful of the presence or absence of the experience of joy, we are mindful of the conditions that are present

before we experience the pleasure and the patterns of events that emerge as the experience fades away. We

learn to recognize whether the pleasure of a particular experience is followed by either lasting happiness or

misery. We know that it might feel really good in the moment to vent our anger at someone who we think has

harmed us but later, we may also find that we have deeply hurt someone we love. We may also learn that the

unpleasantness of a particular experience may be followed by a deeper, more lasting and satisfying experience

of happiness. It is hard work to put in a garden, digging, watering, and weeding. But the fruit of the effort is so

sweet. If we really pay attention, we can develop the wisdom to know what patterns of behavior lead to the

stable, long lasting, authentic happiness that will carry us through bad times and which ones lead to misery.

When we fail to act in our own best interests for lasting happiness, which we often do, I wonder if it is simply

because we don’t have the right kind of knowledge, the kind of knowledge that comes from our direct

experience. Just knowing intellectually what to do doesn’t lead to wisdom. Wisdom is acquired experientially.

Mindful attention and investigation increase the possibility that we actually acquire experiential knowledge. We

don’t have to take as long as it took Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day to finally learn that being a self-

centered jerk doesn’t lead to happiness. But like Bill Murray, we are often stuck. Some of our old habits and

our biologically based predispositions are quite strong, witness the difficulty with New Year’s resolutions. If we

really want to cultivate joy in our lives and abandon misery, we have to pay very close attention and investigate

the conditions for stable, long term happiness to arise. Our brains aren’t designed to make us happy, they are

designed to make us survive and reproduce. If we want to be happy, we have to investigate and then resist

some of our habits and instincts. That seems to me to be the long-term goal of all spiritual practice.

complications from the flu and flu-like illnesses, following are some key points

to remember:

How to avoid sharing germs:

o Lather long enough to sing the happy birthday song

• Use hand sanitizer

o Rub hands together for at least

20 seconds

• Push elevator buttons with your

knuckle instead of your fingertip

If you or your spouse have flu-like symptoms:

• Call your physician!

• Stay in your home

other residents until you are symptom-free
