    INTRODUCTION

    Safetyistheresponsibilityoftheoperator!

    Testsaretobecarriedoutonlyonnon-energizedcircuits!Checkforlivecircuitsbeforemakingresistancemeasurements(safetycheck).

    Highvoltageispresent,asisthesampleconnectedtoit.Anyoneperformingorassistingintestingmustfollowallsafetyprecautionstopreventelectricalshocktothemselvesandtoothers.

    AEMCconsiderstheuseofrubberglovestobeanexcellentsafetypractice,eveniftheequipmentisproperlyoperatedandcorrectlygrounded.

    Whentestingsampleswithacapacitivecomponent,makesuretheyhavebeenproperlydischargedandaresafetotouch.Dielectricinsulationsamplesshouldbeshort-circuitedforatleastfivetimestheamountoftimetheywereenergized.

    Megohmmetersshouldneverbeusedinanexplosiveenvironment.

    Onlyusetheleadsthataresuppliedwiththemegohmmeter.Iftheyaredefectiveorworn,replacebeforetesting.

    1.1 International Electrical Symbols

    This symbol signifies that the instrument is protected by double or reinforced insulation.

    This symbol on the instrument indicates a WARNING and that the operator must refer to the user manual for instructions before operating the instrument. In this manual, the symbol preceding instructions indicates that if the instructions are not followed, bodily injury, installation/sample and product damage may result.

    1.2 Definition of Measurement CategoriesCAT I: For measurements on circuits not directly connected to the AC supply

    wall outlet such as protected secondaries, signal level, and limited energy circuits.

    CAT II: For measurements performed on circuits directly connected to the electrical distribution system. Examples are measurements on household appliances or portable tools.

    CAT III: For measurements performed in the building installation at the distribution level such as on hardwired equipment in fixed installation and circuit breakers.

    PRODUCT FEATURES

    The Megohmmeter Models 5050 and 5060 are portable instruments, housed in rugged casing.These megohmmeters are designed to check the safety of electrical installations and equipment.

    2.5 Push-button Functions

    2.5.1 2nd Button Selectsthesecondfunction(highlightedinyellow)onthebuttons.

    The symbol appears. This symbol disappears upon pressing thefunctionbuttonchosen,exceptifthebuttonisactivated.Inthiscase,itonlydisappearswhenthe buttonispressedagain,orifotherfunctionbuttonsarepressed.Thisallowsyoutorapidlydecreaseparameterswiththebutton,withouthavingtopressthe buttoneverytime.

    2.5.2 V-TIME / Button

    First Function - V/TIMEDisplaysallthesecondaryinformationavailableonthesmalldisplay.

    For Insulation Measurement: Thetimeelapsedsincethestartofthemeasurement.

    Thevoltagebetweentheinstruments+andterminals.

    Date,time,testvoltageandOBJ:TESTnumberinmemoryrecallmode(MR).

    Second Function - Time-controlled TestDisplaysthemeasurementdurationprogrammedinSET-UPonthesmalldisplay.

    The symbollightsup. PressingtheSTARTbuttonbeginsthemeasurementprocess.Themea-

    surementdurationissetto15minutesbydefault.

    Assoonasthemeasurementstarts,thesmalldisplaycountsdowntheremainingdurationofthemeasurement.Onceitreacheszero,themea-surementstops.

    As the time-controlled test is carriedout, interval samples (resistance/voltagevaluesasafunctionoftime)areautomaticallysaved.Thetimebetweeneachsampleissetto30sbydefault,butitcanbechangedintheSET-UPmenu.

    ThesamplesaredisplayedwiththeR(t)function(see2.5.3)aslongasanewmeasurementhasnotbeenstarted.Witheachnewmeasurement,the previous sample value is erased from thememory.These samplevaluesaresavedwith the last valueof the resistance if usedwith theMEM (memorystorage)function.

    NOTE: If the selector switchs position is altered, or if the STOP button is pressed during measurement, the measurement is interrupted.

    This function is only active for insulation measurement.

    First Function - R-DAR-PI-DD

    TheR-DAR-PI-DDbuttonallowsautomaticmeasurementof: DielectricAbsorptionRatio(DAR)

    DielectricDischargeTest(DD)

    ThePIandDARvaluesareusefulonlongcables,orwhenmonitoringtheagingofinsulationonelectricalmachines.

    Onthismaterial,measurementisadverselyaffectedatthebeginning,duetointer-feringcurrents (fromcapacitivecharges,dielectricabsorption)whicheventuallycanceleachotherout.Therefore,inordertogetanaccuratemeasurementoftheleakagecurrent,itisnecessarytocarryoutthemeasurementoveralongperiodoftime,toreducetheinfluenceofanyinterferingcurrentsatthebeginningofthemeasurement.

    ThenthePIortheDAR ratiosarecalculated:PI*=R10min/R1 min(2valuesrecordedduringa10minutemeasurement)

    DAR=R1 min/R30s(2valuesrecordedduringa1minutemeasurement)

    Thequalityofinsulationdependsontheresultsfound.

    *The 10 and 1 minute times can be modified in the SET-UP menu, to adapt to any changes or specific applications.

    Formulti-layerinsulation,ifoneofthelayersisdefective,butalltheothersshowstrongresistance,thecalculationofthePIandPARratiosisnotsufficienttoshowthistypeofproblem.

    Therefore,itisnecessarytosupplementthePIandDARindicationsbyadielectricdischargetest(DD).

    Thistestmeasuresthedielectricabsorptionofheterogeneousormulti-layerinsu-lationwhileignoringtheparallel-surfaceleakcurrents.

    Itconsistsofapplyingatestvoltageforaperiodsufficienttoelectricallychargetheinsulationtobemeasured(atypicalvalueistheapplicationofa500Vvoltagefor30minutes).

    ThetestvoltageischoseninthesamewayastheinsulationmeasurementintheSET-UPmenu.Thedevicethencausesafastdischargeduringwhichtheinsula-tioncapacity ismeasured, thenmeasured1minuteafter theresidualcurrent iscirculatingintheinsulation.

    NOTE: The input current may be a depolarization current resulting from an earlier insulation measurement. It is recommended to start a new DAR and PI measure-ment after the current has dropped to a negligible value (on the order of 100pA) to avoid variations on these measurements.

    If a significant interference voltage is present, the dISt factor may be increased so that the measurement is not interrupted by the appearance of a negative alternation during the generation of the test voltage, which is the same as optimizing the measurement build-up time in the presence of the interference voltage.

    Ifthetime-controlledtest- modehasbeenselected,theR(t)buttonmakesitpossibletoaccessallthesavedintervalmeasurementsautomatically.

    IftheALARMfunctionisactivated,abuzzeristriggeredassoonasthemeasure-mentcrossesthethresholdprogrammedintheSET-UPconfigurationmenu.

    OPERATION

    NOTE: Charge the instrument fully before use.

    5.1 Measurement Procedure Starttheinstrumentbyturningtheswitchtothecorrespondingposition.

    AllthesegmentsontheLCDscreenaredisplayed,thenthebatteryvoltage.

    Connecttheleadstothe+and-leadstothemeasurementpoints.

    Thevoltageiscontinuouslymeasuredanddisplayedonthesmalldisplay.

    PresstheSTART/STOPbuttontostartthemeasurement.

    Press START/STOP again to stop the measurement. The last resultremains on the display until the next measurement is started, or theselectorswitchisturned.

    WARNING: If an external voltage is present that is greater than the thresholds described in 4.2, the instrument indicates this voltage on the small display, the warning symbol flashes, and the measurement is stopped.

    5.2 Insulation MeasurementThis function allows the instrument to measure insulation between 10k and 10Tatatestvoltageof500V,1000V,2500V,and5000Vorprogrammedvoltagebetween40Vand5100V.

    Usetherotaryswitchtoselecttherequiredtestvoltage(M-500V,orM-1000V,orM-2500V,M-5000V,orVar.M-50-5000V).

    Connecttheinstrumenttotheinsulatortobetested.

    Start the measurement using the START/STOP button and read theresults.

    WARNING: If an external voltage is present that is greater than the thresholds described in 4.2, then measurement is prohibited.

    UseR(t)whencarryingouta time-controlled test toscroll through the intervalmeasurement values saved at the sampling rate specified in SET-UP. Thesevaluesareavailableuntilanothermeasurementistakenortheselectorswitchisturned.

    When measuring high levels of insulation (>1G), it isadvised that the Gguardterminalbeusedtoeliminatetheinfluenceofsurfaceleakagecurrents.Theguardisconnectedbetweenthetwomeasurementcontactpoints,andthesurfacesusceptibletosurfacecurrents,(e.g.dusty,dampcableortransformerinsulation).Inthiscase,alligatorclipsarepreferabletotest-probesheldinthehand.

    As soonas insulationmeasurement is stopped, the test circuit is automaticallydischargedusingtheinstrumentsinternalresistance.

    1. Selecttheappropriatevoltageforthetestbyclickingontheradiobuttonnexttothedesiredselection.

    2. PresstheStartbutton.Thiswillrunthetestattheselectedvoltage. Asthetestisrunning,allotherbuttonsaregrayedoutandtheStart button

    becomes a Stopbutton.

    Oncethetesthasstarted,agraphwillbegintoappearandbuildontherightsideoftheControlPanel(seeFigure7-7).Thestatisticaldataforthetimeofthetest,DAR,PI,resistancevalueandotherinformationwillappearastheyarecompletedonthelowerleftsideoftheControlPanel.

    Thetestwillstopautomaticallyattheendoftheprogrammedruntime.YoumayalsostopthetestatanytimebypressingtheStopbutton.Whenthetestiscom-plete,iftheCalculateDDcheckboxwasenabled,theModel5060willautomati-callycalculatedielectricdischargeratio.Thistesttakes60seconds.

    NOTE: On small motors and machinery it is possible that the capacitance values are too low for this test to be completed accurately. In these cases, simply press the Stop button to stop the dielectric discharge test.

    3. OncethetesthasbeencompletedpresstheSave to Diskbuttontosavetheresultsofthetestjustcompletedtoadiskdriveinyourcomputer.

    4. Namethefile,thenpresstheSavebutton.

    Thiswillopenthesessionpropertiesdialogbox:

    5. Onceyouhavecompletedfilling inall the informationon thescreen,pressOK.Thiswillopenadialogboxallowingyoutoaddadescriptivenamefortheobjectandtestjustperformed.

    6. PresstheOK button.Theinformationisnowsavedtothecomputersmemory.

    7. Closethedialogboxbyclickingonthesmall atthetoprighthandcornerofthedialogbox.

    8. Youwillthenbeaskedifyouwanttoopenthedatabasejustsaved.ClicktheYes button,whichwillopenadialogboxlabeledCreateViewfromTemplate.

    9. IntheGroupswindowofthisdialogbox,clickonmegohmmeterthenselectthedesiredtemplate,ifotherthanthedefaultisdesired.

    10. InStep2:SpecifyDatabase(s)window, thefileyou justsavedandnamedshouldbevisible.Ifthisisthefileyouwishtogenerateareportfrom,clicktheOKbutton.Thereportwillnowbeavailableon thescreen includinggraph,individualdatapointsandallstatisticaldata.

    11. Toprintthisreport,eitherclickonthePrinticonorclickontheFilecommandandthenPrint.

    8.1 Recharging the Battery

    Ifthe symbolisflashing,thebatteryneedstoberecharged.

    Connect the instrument to the120VACpower cord via theconnector (chargingstartsautomatically).

    Iftheinstrumentisstartedupandthebatteryvoltageis>8V,thenthenormaluseofthedeviceispermitted.

    NOTE: The battery should only be changed by an authorized repair facility recog-nized by AEMC Instruments.

    Changing the battery causes data to be lost from the memory.

    Make sure that none of the terminals are connected and that the selector switch is set to OFF before opening up the case.

    Disconnect the instrument from any source of electricity.

    Useasoftclothlightlydampenedwithsoapywater.Rinsewithawetclothandthendrywithadrycloth.Donotusealcohol,solventsorhydrocarbons.

    8.4 StorageIftheinstrumentisnotusedforanextendedperiodoftime,itisrecommendedtochargetheinstrumenteverytwoorthreemonths.
