The Whites Of Their EyesIt was Monday, May 1, 2017, and President Shannon Ryan greeted us in the “birdcage” lobby of the Manhattan Country Club, where we decamped for our usual breakfast meeting. We started with Rick Farrell, assisted by John Paul Jones, instructing us on how to be a naval officer. We moved on to Ken Deemer announcing a firm Demotion date of June 17 at Joslyn Center. Steve DeBaets reported on the now completed Rotary Cares project, providing home repairs and handicap ramps for one of our seniors. President Shannon, joined on this morning by her mother and stepfather (her dad died too young), updated us on Celebrate MB, which will include three tableside magicians and comedy headliners to be announced.

If You Could See What I HearThe meeting was almost exclusively devoted to President Shannon’s close friend, renowned blind television personality Tom Sullivan. Tom was accompanied by his wife, Patty (“She always dresses up for me even though I can’t see her”), and his German Shepherd Baron (“He epitomizes service above self”). We learned that Tom has some 50 Johnny Carson appearances, has been a regular on Good Morning America, has appeared in multiple television shows and movies, has authored “If You Could See What I Hear” and other books, sang the national anthem at a Super Bowl, is in the Wrestling Hall of Fame, golfs, snow skis, has run marathons, and has done so much else I couldn’t write it down fast enough.

Wanna Play?Tom was full of stories and aphorisms. Here are some: “The 4-Way Test is about everyone benefitting from the deal”……Kudos to the Lions for their focus on blindness and blind children. They helped Tom personally as a child…..Rotary, on the other hand, covers a wide range of projects, so each member can choose a personal commitment…..Tom’s parents, despite professional advice from advisors in the ‘40s and ‘50s, refused to institutionalize him. They set him free…..The key to Tom’s successes has been volunteerism. Memorable volunteers from his childhood were the neighbor boys Billy and Mike Hannon, who opened up his childhood world with the simple words, “Wanna play?” Billy Hannon volunteered his best to enable Tom to be his best……He once golfed with Jack Nick-laus, who said, “The best thing about your swing is that you don’t have to see it.”…..”In everything I do, someone assisted me.” Examples included daughter Blythe skiing with him and son Tom marathoning with him.

Inside OutHere’s more: “Disadvantages can be turned into advantages if supported by service.” “The key to service is to rise above judgment.” “Pride equals Personal Responsibility for Individual Daily Effort.” “Live with purpose and passion.” “Live from inside out, not outside in.”
