is sweeter than cash in hand.” —Ovid

Jim BowserLast week Jim Bowser, using a cane, walked up to the podium and resigned from the club. He quietly told us of his terminal pancreatic cancer and said that he wants to spend his remaining time with his fam-ily. By the time of this writing, Donn Ennis has already posted pictures on Facebook of the long line of Rotarians who lined up for a hug, each of us needing the hug more than Jim did, and Family of Rotary Chair Jan Rhees has already written all of us her parting thoughts for Jim. It was a surprise to most of us. It was an awful, awesome Rotary moment. We found ourselves hurting for Jim and for ourselves, but it is done, and we will each carry this in our own way, united in the fellowship of Manhattan Beach Rotary—a fellowship that Jim can count as one his proudest legacies.

LoveIt was March 31, 2014. President Kathleen Terry introduced Vinny Fazzino to offer his thought for the day, and Vinny chose to talk about love (in his case, Christian love, but he presented it more broadly as Love). It did not appear that, as Vinny spoke, he knew any more than the rest of us about what was to come, and just how much love would be in the room that morning, as we remembered that we are a club composed of real people.

St. PatrickBut first, let me catch up on the heretofore unreported meeting of March 17, 2014, St. Patrick’s Day, at which President Kathleen appeared in a dashing wide-brimmed Irish green hat and led us in singing Happy Birthday to Les Silverman, after which she recognized our many Rotary Reads volunteers, thanked Lisa Hemmat for leading a group to Shen Yun, and especially honored Dave Hornbecker, another member who does one of those relentless behind-the scenes jobs, namely preparing plaques, awards and certificates…..President Kathleen then showed us a film about edible insects as part of her promotion of Stop Hunger Now, made sure we all calendared May 31 for Magic In Giving, suggested we Travel with Charlie to the Fowler Museum April 19, and encouraged us to buy the new Rotary t-shirts being sold by Robin Gary and John Acker. President Kathleen ended this barrage of activity by announc-ing she was looking forward to our June 21 Demotion.

Lipps ServiceWe welcomed Wade Austin back from surgery and planned to listen to “Lipps Service,” Mark Lipps’ on-line radio show Fridays at 8 pm at HealthyLife.net, covering all things Manhattan Beach. Then we failed to recognize a toddler picture of Herb Trachtenberg and checked out Steve Lore’s 1951 Ford Station Wagon Country Squire (a “woody”) which came in first in a Petersen Auto Museum competition. We passed around a 1987 news photo of then-club-president Jim Hallett giving an award to John Hugunin’s high school son Jim, heard that Wade Austin will be the grandfather of a little girl in August, and learned that Jim Lambert’s 5th Grade daughter is a winning student elections campaign manager.

Jeff SnyderJeff Snyder shared his craft talk. Jeff is a property and casualty insurance broker, married to Cynthia, who is a State Farm agent. Daughter Avery, 7, is a violinist and artist, and son Alden is age 4—and already Jeff is involved in, and coaching, youth sports. Jeff, who shares his office with Jay Harkenrider, grew up in Maryland, fishing and crabbing in a rural atmosphere. He studied business administration and finance at Loyola in Baltimore and then held various jobs, including eight years with Aerotek, where he became sales manager. His then-girlfriend Cynthia agreed to join him in his wish to move to California, and they married to seal the deal. Last year he founded his Symcap Insurance Agency. He loves New York City, San Francisco, and surf travel, including Central America, Mexico, Tahiti and Hawaii.

Steve StepanekBack to March 31. The meeting started off with an announcement that, by itself, would be sad enough to occupy all the energy in the room, as Steve Stepanek told us he was resigning from the club because he was living at least half-time in Bend, Oregon and did not feel he could properly meet his commitments to our club. “I will miss you every Monday morning,” he said. After President Kathleen introduced visitors, including her “executive aide,” Fred Manna, we were treated to some words on behalf of the Toberman Neighborhood Center by previous club member Bill Keenan. Then Mike Matthews told us that 20,000 meals were successfully packed for Stop Hunger Now (he failed to mention that he also barbecued pulled pork and sausage links for the assembled volunteers). Then President Kathleen recognized the many club members who rose early on Sunday morning to help with setup for the Sandpipers Fashion Show. We then heard a history of the RI motto, finally settled upon in 1989 as Service Above Self. (My favorite variation of this is the RI Scuba Club, whose motto is “Surface Above Self.”) Dan Quisenberry and Susan Adams are still working on Vi-sion to Learn, with doctors testing 139 Moffett School students April 1-3. And Vinny Fazzino, Steve DeBaets, Jan Buike, and more will be working April 12 moving dirt as a foundation for the Joslyn Center Petanque Court.

Bob NeubauerPast President Bob Neubauer left us for desert life, but joined us for this meeting to introduce us to Eldridge J. Broussard, whom Bob met through his Rotary club in the Coachella Valley. “El,” as he’s called, has spoken to 36 Rotary clubs, largely thanks to Bob’s support. He is an ex-con, former gang-banger, and a motivational speaker who treated us to a lively rendition of his personal story which led to his motto, “Own Who You Are.” He lost a sister to violence, ended up in custody for his own criminal behavior, found his way to boot camp and a job, but never really found himself until the day he admitted his true story to his boss at Home Depot—who, far from firing him, supported him on every level. His story matched up perfectly with Robin Gary’s thought for the day, a Chinese proverb from Shen Yun: You must have crossed the river before you may tell the crocodile it has bad breath.

Ingo WerkThe Bayou Teche crew was back in the house. President Kathleen Terry was on the trip, along with Robin Gary, David Boochever, Les Silverman, and Mark Lipps, all of whom told us about Ingo Werk’s wife Mary and son Cory, the swamp tour, Zydeco music and dancing, a crawfish boil, private home dinners, Cajun culture, and much more. Jim Hunter described Breaux Bridge as a “town of 7000 people and 14,000 guns,” and also highlighted the drive-through daiquiri concession.

Paul HarrisDave Hornbecker awarded RI Foundation fellowships: Jan Rhees +1, Brad Koppel +3, Geoff Bremer +4, and Shannon Ryan +4……Dan Saks announced his daughter graduated UC Irvine and is looking at nursing school….Jan Rhees thanked Kathy McElroy for her physical therapy work with multiple Rotarians……Larry Wolf sold Shorewood Realtors……Lee Walker’s wife, perhaps admiring Deb Arnold, came home a redhead….Ray Padilla sent his wife and daughter off to Costa Rica where they ziplined and bungeed.

Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett
