LETTERS TO THE EDITORE toilets waiting to be opened

Sir, Two units of E toilet havebeen constructed at the en-trance of BagavandhamStreet (from VenkatanaryanaRoad). Construction startedalmost 6 months and was com-pleted a month back. However, they have not been opened forthe public. Now, all passersbyurinate on all the sides of thetoilets making the stench un-bearable. Two schools are func-tioning in the vicinity and it isa health hazard to the stu-dents.

Further, relaying of the roadswas completed a few monthsback but the inlets for rainwater to drain away have notbeen covered with the resultpersons unfamiliar with theroad are bound to hurt them-selves, especially during therainy season.

I request the Corporationto set right the above deficien-cies. – M. S. Chandraseka-ran, Flat No 7, Rams Apart-ments, 20, BagavandhamStreet, T. Nagar.

‘Hot’ EB counters Sir, Following the shifting of the bill payment counters by

the Electricity Board to the rear side of its building onThanikachalam Chetty Road, T Nagar, consumers have beenencountering problems, in that the new set-up which, I pre-sume, must be a makeshift arrangement does not have enoughspace to form queues. Though four counters are supposed tofunction, two each on either side of the office, only two countersfunction effectively. Consumers have literally to sweat it outas there are no fans. Will the authorities ensure proper facilitiesfor the convenience of consumers in the new set-up, even if itis a temporary arrangement? – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar.

Slow computers in PO irk visitorsSir, A number of persons including senior citizens visit the

West Mambalam Post Office for various services such asSavings Bank, Pension, Time Deposits, National SavingsCertificates etc. Of late, the wait for attention is increasingday by day due to non or very slow functioning of the comput-ers in the post office. Will the authorities concerned look intothe problem and bring relief to visitors? -R. Narasimhan, WestMambalam

MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition

Writer, litterateur and intel-lectual Jayakanthan passedaway on April 7.

He was 81 and had been aresident of 94th Street, 15thSector, K. K. Nagar.

He had been ill for severalmonths and was recentlydischarged from hospital.

He is survived by his wife, ason and two daughters.

If ever there was one manwho can be said to have comeclose to personifying modernTamil literature, it was Jaya-kanthan. A school drop-out,Jayakanthan’s writings drewsustenance from his full-fledgedinvolvement in public life - as acommunist party worker andlater as an intellectual.

Among the first to use‘Madras Tamil’ in his works,Jayakanthan chronicled thelife of the working class and thesocial changes it went throughover nearly 40 years. A Jnan-pith awardee, his best-knownworks include ̀ Sila NerangalilSila Manithargal’ and ̀ Yaaruk-kaga Azhudhaan’.

Author Jayakanthan popu-larised, even institutionalised, the marginalised Tamil -theaverage Srinivasan. Histhemes were truly avant-garde- the rickshaw puller’s strug-gles, his wife exhorting him towear an MGR banian so thefilm star’s charisma could ruboff on the rickshaw puller, andthe masterly questioning of theTamil concept of ‘karpu’(chastity).

“For the first time, rickshawpullers, pressmen, prostitutesand footloose workers wereconvincingly and sympatheti-

Noted Tamil writer Jayakanthanpasses away

cally portrayed in Tamil fic-tion,” says historian A. R. Ven-katachalapathy .

Though a hardcore leftist inhis early days, he was latermore in tune with that strain inthe communist movementthat saw virtues in Gandhi andNehru. While breaking rankswith the communist move-ment, he also dared to take onPeriyar and his Dravidianmovement -his stature was tallenough and his plebeiancredentials strong enough tocarry conviction.

Jayakanthan had a closerelationship with Tamil films. His works provided the ammu-nition that Tamil film-makersneeded to break with conven-tion. Even those who did notread his writings saw the filmadaption of his novel, ‘SilaNerangalil Sila Mani-dhargal’.In the movie, ‘Ganga’, from anorthodox brahmin family, hasa sexual encounter with astranger who offers her a ridein his car. Prabu, the man, isclear that the sex was consen-sual. She is not so sure, however. But Ganga later

seeks him out and attempts arelationship. To a Tamilaudience used to the black andwhite of heroes and villains,‘Sila Nerangaglil’ was a radicaldeparture.

Jayakanthan was also themost feted among Tamilwriters. A Padma Bhushanawardee, he was honoured withthe Jnanpith and SahityaAkademi awards. (Reportcourtesy The Times of India)
