Sivakumar told MambalamTimes that he had parked thecar as usual in the compoundof his individual house but thegate had not been locked thatnight. There is no watchman.

He found the wheel missingin the morning. Two big stoneshad been placed to prop up thecar before the wheel was re-moved by the thieves.

I was working in a private concern and I wasearning Rs.25,000 per month. I availed a personalloan of Rs.2,00,000 and I have already paid 10 out ofthe total 36 EMI’s due. If you have paid 10 EMIs, then most of your paymentswould have been adjusted towards interest. Only a smallportion of your principal would have been repaid. Hence asubstantial part of your loan amount will continue to beoutstanding. We recommend the following options:

a. In case you have received some settlement amountfrom your previous employer, repay some portion of yourloan amount and request the bank to convert the balanceinto a more affordable monthly EMI.

b. Try and borrow from a different source at a lowerinterest and repay the loan in its entirety.

c. Request the Bank to lower the interest rate and extendthe loan tenor to provide you with a more affordable EMI.

You may consult a debt counselor for a more personalisedsolution.

As rightly observed by you, paying the minimum dueevery month does not reduce your overall principal out-standing. A substantial portion of the payment you makeis used to clear the interest dues and only a small portionis adjusted towards payment of principal. Interest ratescharged on credit card dues range between 30% and 42%on the balance outstanding.

In such situations, it is advisable to approach your bankand request for conversion of credit card dues to an install-ment loan. This will help you to repay the loan over a periodof time at a rate that is affordable by you.

Do banks need to write-off credit card dues if theyremain unpaid? If so at what stage is it written-off?Once it is written-off does it mean the borrower is notliable to repay the due?

As per regulations laid down by the Reserve Bank ofIndia (RBI), banks must take a reserve for bad debt / write-off the balance due your credit card account if you do notmake a payment which is due on your card for 6 months(180 days past due). However, the borrower continues toremain obligated to repay the amount that has beenwritten-off. The bank will typically assign written-off loansto a collections agency who will continue efforts to collectthe dues on the card.
