Time to banish the traditional method of measuring Crankshaft Deflections withits dated reliance on dial gauges. The simple option afforded by the originalMalin CDM utilising LVDT electronic transducer coupled to a hand heldinstrument with LCD display and download facility has been updated in the Mk2 version to offer the latest technology providing a more compact unit at aneven more competitive price.

The MALIN CDM has been designed specifically to accurately and quicklymeasure crankshaft deflections. The readings are stored in the instrument fordownloading via USB lead to a PC where clear and concise alphanumeric andgraphic information can be viewed and archived.

CYLINDER BORE MEASUREMENTA simple attachment allows the sensorto be used as a micrometer to monitorwear in the cylinder liners. The kitincludes a set of supporting rods to

allow readings to be taken fromtop to bottom of the cylinder.

The display on theinstrument shows thevariation in the bore

diameter, and highlights if the wearor ovality are outside preset limits.

The SYSTEMThe System consists of a hand heldanalyser and a sensor with six extensionrods. The analyser stores the measurementstaken between each journal, up to amaximum of 20 journals. All the relevantinformation, eg. number of journals androtation sequence, are entered directly fromthe PC to the instrument. On entry of themost convenient ‘start’ journal by theoperator, the instrument will display thecorrect and fastest measuring sequence atall stages throughout the procedure. Thisdramatically speeds up the process andreduces the incidence of human error.

The SENSORThe sensor, housed in a nickelplated machined brass casing isconnected via a 6mtr oilresistant cable to the instrument.Inside the sensor is a springloaded variable displacementtransducer that can detectmovements to 1µm, upto a maximum of 2mm.

The RODSBy screwing together acombination of the sixextension rods andhardened steelpoints supplied,to the sensorbody, it canaccommodatemost engines, with anadjustment rangeof 68-698mm.

OPERATIONThe operator simply inserts the sensorbetween the webs of the crankshaft. Theextension rod length is then adjusted andlocked in position when the LED lights onthe sensor body. This indicates the zeroposition and subsequent readings areautomatically compared with this firstreading.Readings are taken from outside theengine casing and once complete theanalyser indicates the next journal formeasurement. The sensor can be sprungout of its marks and placed in the next, often without having to adjust theextension rods. The procedure is repeateduntil complete.

OUTPUTThe stored readings can then bedownloaded to a PC via the USB leadwhich generates the diagrams of thevertical and horizontal sections and a datasummary. As the procedure is consistentlyrepeatable a historic record can easily beinitiated.Individual pre-set limits can be showngraphically together with other details suchas draught measurements, enginetemperature etc.

The analyser can also be used in manualmode purely as a precision electronicmicrometer gauge. This may be usefulwhen installing new bearing shells to

confirm approximate alignment.
