Why do we ask studentsto make short films?

• To summarise a complex learning or assessment process, so students can replay or repeat the information in their own time

• To capture a summary of a core element of the curriculum

• To support students with a range of learning needs

• To reduce students’ reliance on lecturers’ accounts and and handouts

Is any fancy equipment needed?

• No– A simple camera (including, one on a

smart phone), a computer with movie making software, access to web-based sounds and/or images and an imagination

– Your facilitator will provide you with the equipment needed

Tips for Movie Making

• Keep the concept as simple as possible• Try to show two or three scenes only, for

example:– Before and after or – Wrong and right or – Planning and implementation &– An explanation or resolution

• Write a script and rehearse to ensure your film fits within the time requirements

• Try not to laugh

Your Task

• Make a short film which illustrates an aspect of:– Authenticity/commodification or the

experience economy

• Your film should involve at least two actors and should be 3-5 minutes in duration

• If you are filming 2 or more scenes it should be clearly indicated– Eg. By someone saying scene 1, scene 2 etc.

• Your have 1 hour to write, produce and rehearse your film

• You will be filmed in the next hour
