We are excited to share our ex-clusive interview with OlivierEchaudemaison; Creative Di-rector of luxury beauty brand,Guerlain. Olivier is the talentedcreative brain behind thecolours, presentation and con-cepts that make Guerlain collec-tions so hotly anticipated everysingle season.

Enjoy the interview!

Working for Guerlain soundslike a dream. Could you de-scribe your average day?

Everyday is different: - It can be around the products - It can be around the images - It can be around the future - It can be around the PR - It can be travelling around theworld

How did your career bring youto Guerlain?

For the French makeup artist Iwas 20 years ago, Guerlain wasTHE must of luxury brands. Itwas necessary for me to be partof it!

How do you choose ambassa-dors of the brand and do youplan a long term Guerlain rela-tionship with Natalia Vodi-anova?

Normally we choose a modelfor one year, for the differentmakeup collections, toevoke our feeling ofthe year.

With Natalia,who is sobeautiful ,

so inspiring, we changed ourstrategy: she can be the image ofBeauty, Skincare, and our leg-endary fragrance, Shalimar.

How are you inspired for newcollections and is it a longprocess? How early do youstart working on the upcomingcollection?

We work on our products 2years, at least, in advance. It's along process, with a new pack-aging, new textures, etc. Theeasy part is the colour palettes! When we create with an exter-nal designer, it's a long process, since the beginning: thesketches, the industrial part, themock-ups, the materials, and soand so. 24 months are neces-sary!

For a collection, it depends if itis only new shades, or if wehave to develop with the lab anew texture of powder, creamor gel. We have lots of meetings, with 10 people around the table.

What qualities one shouldposses to work for Guerlain?

First to love, love, Beauty andfragrances! To be sophisticated enoughto desire the most unique

Guerlain product. To understand fashion and fri-volity. To have a smart brain, to knowbusiness.

What Guerlain productsshould be in a makeup bag ofevery woman?

Always a compact: to retouchthe skin, something like ParureCompact Foundation; a lipstick like Rouge G, whereyou have a mirror for a quickretouch, a gloss, to make your smileshine, and a blush, if you run frombusiness to parties!

What trends in makeup do yousee emerging in the near fu-ture?

2 years in advance is today forme, what do you call near fu-ture?

And, from the USA, make-upartist, Marlena who is a highly tal-ented teacher of makeup tech-niques. See more of Marlenahere: http://www.makeupgeek.com/.

What were the first years of yourcareer as a Make-up Artist (MUA)like? They were filled with frustrationand poverty. My first job wasworking in the Cosmetics a LaCarte shop in Motcomb Street,Belgravia. The clientele were notadventurous with their make-upat all. I guess I learned more aboutdealing with different personali-ties than anything. My second jobwas working in a makeover stu-dio. To say I hated that job wouldbe an understatement but I learntto work very quickly and by thetime I left I could set hair with myeyes closed.

Did you get a special educationand do you think it’s important?Nic and I studied at our local col-lege. The course was 2 years andit felt too long. I think a shortcourse to learn the basics fol-lowed by a year or two on acounter (MAC, Bobbi Brown,Nars, Shu Uemura) then assistingan experience artist is the best ed-ucation you can get.

What is the best way to start a ca-reer as a MUA ? What can yourecommend?Answered above.

Today makeup and beautyindustries are very compet-itive, what advice could yougive to all the beginners outthere?

Don't get involved in thebitching. Focus on yourwork and no one else's. Behappy and thankful forevery opportunity thatcomes your way and happyfor your colleagues whenthey get the opportunitiesover you.Stay polite and friendlyeven when you would like

to be otherwise. What were the first years of yourcareer as a Make-up Artist (MUA)like?

Really hard work, when I finishedcollege my first job was workingas a manager for a retail store (notmake-up related) and doing makeup in my spare time. Later thatyear I became a manager of anEstee lauder account which I re-ally enjoyed.

Did you get a special educationand do you think it’s important?

I did a two year diploma in MediaMake-up at the college of West

Anglia and I canhonestly say I learnt

pretty much nothing, I spent mostof my time hanging out with theboys on other courses! However,I do think it is important to do acourse I just think that the one Itook was much to long. I wouldreally look into how much workyour tutor has done in the indus-try before signing up or payingany money out.

What is the best way to start a ca-reer as a MUA ? What can yourecommend?

I would start by doing a shortcourse then get part time workingon a counter such as MAC.

You firstneed to practice on as manyfriends and family as possi-ble, as practice and experi-ence are your best ways toimprove!

Blogospheric Beauty

As usual we have the sectionwhich all of you love so much. Some of the best beauty bloggersfrom all over the Web are answerthe burning questions! Find outwhat they think about Fall 2010.

Sabrina from The BeautyLook Book http://www.thebeautylookbook.com/

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

My ideal fall collection wouldconsist of:* different variations of shimmerytaupe eyeshadows: golden taupe, deep smokey taupe, charcoaltaupe, blackened taupe-brownshimmer* soft pink blush (like ChanelCaprice US version, my holy grailpink blush - long discontinued)* nude pink lips, dusty mauveplum pink lips, and a pinkcaramel shade for lips

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

Every luxury brand seems to havea different take on fall lips orcheeks this year. I think the onecommon trend though is a richsmokey eye, NARS fall duos are agorgeous mix of pale andsmokey, Dior's Misty Mauve is agood smokey purple, Chanel'sEnigma is a pretty combination oftaupe, plum, silver, BobbiBrown's Black Velvet eyeshadowsare all smokey and dark, evenMAC's Fabulous Felines collec-tion features rich colors.

Please share what’s on your wishlist from this year’s fall collec-tions?

I've already acquired many fallitems on my wishlist! My fa-vorites are NARS Tzarine, Ed-ward Bess Love Affair CompactRouge, Chanel Enigma, UrbanDecay's Naked Palette, andChantecaille's Tiger Palette. Atthis moment I have Chanel's LesKhakis nail polishes and LeMetier's Fall Eye Kit on my wish-list.

Aleksis from Alpha Blondehttp://alpha-blonde.blogspot.com

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

I love seeing red when the leavesstart to turn so I would use all dif-ferent shades of red; deep blood-red to bright orange-red, but alsodifferent shades of gray. The twowould pair gorgeously together.

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

I definitely think it's going to bevery dark this fall, I have beenseeing so many dark eyes and lipspaired together.

Please share what’s on your wishlist from this year’s fall collec-tions?

I really want a shade of dark berrycolored lip stain, a new red lip-stick and a cobalt blue nail polish. So far no fall collections havecaught my eye.

Amy from Café Makeuphttp://cafemakeup.com/

If you could create yourown Fall makeup collectionwhat colours would youuse?

If I could create my ownline, the colors would bevery alive and fresh, over aperfect canvas. An excellentfoundation is essential, andmine would have just a bitof a glow. Fall fashions, with their strong colors thisseason, can sap attentionaway from the face. Beauti-fully textured skin keeps theface in the spotlight. The eyeshadows would in-clude a metallic version ofChanel’s Taupe Grise, asheer cool-toned light gold,a startlingly pigmentedkhaki green infused with ei-ther silver or gold and ametallic camel. The neutralsinclude deep almonds andnear-blacks, as well as somelight grieges and nude high-lighters. I would have blushes in sev-eral shades of pinks, peaches, and a burgundy-wine. It may sound overthe top, but we’re dreaminghere-- I’d add blushes inevery imaginable shade ofnude—from cool to golden. Is a dozen different nudeblushes too many? I say it’snot enough. Eyeliners would includeone the color of the originalChanel Vamp crème nailpolish, a black infused withgraphite shimmer, a black

infused with a deep khakigreen/bronze/gold shimmerand a blue infused withblackened plum. For lips, several nudes arenecessary to balance strongFall eye looks. One cannotput out a line that includesonly one nude—nude lipsare tricky and differentskintones need to be able tochoose from a variety. Allof my non-nude lipstickswould drip in pigment. I’dneed a deep blue-red crèmelipstick, and a coordinatingshade in a high-shine lip-gloss. Also, a neutral pinkand a soft pink-peach thatcan be worn for those veryproper tea-with-the-Queentype events. The texture ofthe lips is as important asthe foundation—each shadewould have a glow or glossto balance out the heaviermatte textures of the Fallfabrics.

What are the main beautytrends for Fall 2010 in youropinion?

Like the Fall fashion trends, nearly all major high-endmakeup lines are usingdeep neutrals as their main-stay, coupled with rich tra-ditional Fall colors—smokypurples, taupes, greys, deepgreens and an astoundingamount of blue. Does everymajor line tell a blue eye-shadow story? I think so--Estee Lauder’s Blue Dahlia,Bobbi Brown’s Denim andRose, Armani’s Night Viper, the list goes on. It’s a mod-

ern blue eyeshadow compared toformer years, and so pervasive. Red lips are back with a ven-gence. It’s interesting to see thatthere are so many nude lips too,to balance Fall’s smoky eye looks.Liquid eyeliners and massivelashes are everywhere, perhapsbecause of the Mad Men influ-ence. Blushes are pinks, bur-gundies, plums and nudes. Allthat coral we saw last Spring hasvanished.Fall 2010 nail polishes seem likethe product of a mad scientist’sconjuring—the glass fleck, thesmoked jewel-tones, the greigecremes, and the duo-chrome/glass fleck combinations.Nail polish formula’s have gonethrough such a significant changein the last twelve months. Nowwhen I apply a polish I got a yearago, I ask myself if it looks dated.

Please share what’s on your wishlist from this year’s fall collec-tions?

I’d love to know more about LeMetier de Beaute’s Fall collec-tion—it looks so exciting! Any-thing from Edward Bess. RescueBeauty Lounge’s Fall nail collec-tion. Anything by Tom Pecheuxfor Estee Lauder. BurberryBeauty’s lipsticks and glosses.Chantecaille’s Tiger in the Wildcollection. Saying that, I’m al-ways so excited to see new inde-pendent makeup lines startingup. I would put Guerlain’s 68Champs-Élysées palettes on mylist, except that I’ve purchasednearly all of them already. Thesame with Chanel Fall 2010—bothlines did a fabulous job this sea-son.

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

I'd draw inspiration from natureif I were in charge of creating amakeup collection. I'd choose alot of golds, reds, browns, andplatinums, but give it a slightlygothic or cyberpunk edge, so it'dbe wearable and classic but inter-esting.

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

Makeup trends tend to follow acycle, but the makeup artists al-ways try to put a new twist onthem so they're not too repetitive.Kind of variations on a theme.Smokey colors always make a re-turn in the colder months. Thisyear however it's more of anedgy, slightly punk smokey eyeor a lady like smokey eye thanrock star. Even better red lips arefairly popular!

Rowena from CosmeticCandy http://cosmetic-candy.com/

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

I know that fall colours tend to bemore reds and purples, but sincemy favourite colour is green Iwould definitely create somegreen eyeshadows, dark leafygreens or emerald greens on ablackened base with sheer lipglosses with a hint of gold for thelips. So I guess greens and golds.

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

I guess there are always the samekind of trends around fall; darklips - I reckon it will go evendarker this year like a deep pur-ple, and matte nails along withthe YSL double colour effect ap-plied! I think matte skin will bepopular too; matte but not heavy, and really flat beige nude lips asan alternative to the people whodon't want to wear purples andreds!

Please share what’s on your wishlist from this year’s fall collec-tions?

There's nothing madly grabbingmy attention just yet, I think be-cause I don't want to let the sum-mer (or lack of!) go just yet. Ithink both Chanel and YSL havesome really interesting eyeshad-ows and lip colours for fall, andNars has a lovely limited editioneyeshadow trio and nude lipstick

coming out. I will also look atAsian brands, especiallyLavshuca and Addiction to seewhat they are offering for fall -any casual red lipstick will catchmy attention and since I love darkeyeshadows, anything that isdeep but also has some sparkle -gotta get over those drabevenings somehow!

Kirstie from Beautiehttp://beaut.ie/

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

Oh – excellent question! This yearI've gotten really into shimmersafter years of rocking mostlymattes so I'd really love a suite ofgorgeous autumnal semi-metallicshadow shades with creamy, vel-vety finishes. In fact, I'm droolingnow just thinking about them.Smashbox's Masquerade eyeshadow palette is the closest thingto what I've got in mind, but I'dstill like to make a few tweaks. I'dalso like a foundation in purewhite to mix summer foundationdown with and I can never getenough of lip tints either.

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

We've got the usuals from the cat-walks again this year: deep eyes, berry lips and worryingly, I'mseeing a lot of brown lipsticks, which I really don't like. But themakeup collections themselvesare telling a different story to cat-walk trends in a large part, andone trend I'm really liking is thereturn to dusky pink lips. Mac,

Art Deco and Revlon allhave pinks which are soft, can be dressed up or downand which are very wear-able – precisely the sort ofthing real women actuallylike! Lip stains are on theagenda too with two greatluxe ones from Guerlainand Giorgio Armani, andwhat's also so nice aboutAutumn/Winter makeup isthat it's so much better thansummer for the transitionfrom day to night. Illa-masqua and Bourjois bothhave great gold liners thisseason which make for fan-tastic accents on an autumneye.

Please share what’s on yourwish list from this year’s fallcollections?

Ombre Magnétique fromLancome's Coquettes collec-tion look incredible and Iwould adore to try them. Acouple more shades fromthe YSL Rouge Pur Couturelipstick collection will hope-fully find their way into mymakeup bag and I'm inter-ested to see how Topshop'smakeup line develops nowthe spotlight is off. IsaDoraGraffiti Nails is top of mylust-have list, too.

Gio from Beautiful withBrainshttp://beautifulwithbrains.com/

If you could create yourown Fall makeup collectionwhat colours would youuse?

Well, I like colorful makeupso the eyeshadows and theeyeliners would be in beau-tiful deep purples, greensand blues. I would also cre-ate a couple in coppers andgolds for those that prefer amore natural look. For thelips and cheeks, soft pinks, deep purples and sheer bur-gundy shades.

What are the main beautytrends for Fall 2010 in youropinion?

I think the barely-theremakeup look, with a flaw-less complexion and soft, natural eyes will be very inthis fall. I also saw lots ofbrands coming out withpurple shades, which I'mvery pleased about as I lovepurples.

Please share what’s on yourwish list from this year’s fallcollections?

I'm planning to get at leastone of The Body Shop Au-tumn Leaves compact.Their leaves pattern is justso beautiful! I also wantNars Soft Touch ShadowPencil in Palladium, ChanelJoues Contraste PowderBlush in Pink Explosion andthe entire Pupa BaroqueCouture collction! But Ithink I'll only end up get-ting the soft geen eye-shadow and nail polish inthe end.

Vesna from Beauty Addicthttp://www.beautyaddict.net/

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

I really love Fall because colorsare more deeper and bold, whichis completely my style. I'd defi-nitely use smokey purple, mikadoyellow (I know, this seems morelike a Summer color, but MikadoYellow isn't that bright actually)but these two colors are, as weknow, complementary and I lovehow they look together and bringeach other to pop out. I'd also adda green shade - Myrtle and blackwhich could be used with purpleand mikado yellow. The rest ofthe face would look more natural.

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

I've noticed A LOT of purpleshades for Fall. And that's greatbecause I really think it's a greatshade for Fall. Of course, mostbrands launch bolder colors forFall. Seems like I and somebrands have the same taste in col-ors.

Please share what’s on your wishlist from this year’s fall collec-tions?

This one is always tough! I haveso many things on my wish listright now! Let's start with UDNYC palette, Collistar is releasingan awesome Fall/Winter Collec-tion, some Dior lipsticks (HauteCouture), some ArtDeco stuff andsome other things which I won'tbe mentioning because even this

is too much.

Charlotte from Lipglossipinghttp://www.lipglossiping.com/

If you could create your own Fallmakeup collection what colourswould you use?

For me, fall should be all abouthow nature prepares itself for along, harsh winter. I'd love to cre-ate a collection that celebratesthis. From olive greens and an-tiqued golds right through tofiery reds and magnificent coppershades. Lips would be neutral, creamy and mid-toned. Cheeksshould have just a hint of theflush one gets from those firstcold blasts of wind that signalsWinter hasn't forgotten about us!

What are the main beauty trendsfor Fall 2010 in your opinion?

There seems to be two distincttrends forming for Fall 2010. Wehave a whole host of neutrals hit-ting the scene... reflected in UrbanDecay's hugely successful NakedPalette and Guerlain's eagerly an-ticipated Fall palettes but there'salso something darker and mood-ier muscling in!

Bobbi Brown's Black Velvet Col-lection of shimmering almost-blacks is testament to this, as isUD's Black Palette. And have youseen Scarlett's lips for the D&GFall/Winter campaign? Vampy!

Vampy!

Page 52: MakeUp4All Fall 2010 Magazine

FALL/2010 52

Another trend that's not so muchshade-related but equally inter-esting is the effort that brands arestarting to put into beautifullypackaged products. I mean, trulystunning. I've already mentionedGuerlain's little masterpieces...but let's not forget Clarins' up-coming Barocco collection. Iknow it's more for Holiday 2010but brands are really starting totake on board the effect that anexquisitely packaged collectioncan have on us consumers. Likemoths to a flame!

Please share what’s on your wishlist from this year’s fall collec-tions?Oh a bit of Guerlain for sure! I'malways easily tempted by gor-geous neutrals and housed inthose divine cut-out palettes?Sign me up! I've already beencaught under the Chanel spelland indulged in a few pieces fromtheir Fall collection. Hmmm...what else, the new Clarins RougeProdige lipsticks finally introduceme to a long-lasting lipstick thatdoesn't dry me out too much. Iwant to check out a couple moreshades from their line up.Lastly? Probably NARS Douceurblush. I've heard so many lovelythings about it but don't have acounter near me! I will have tomake a special effort to track onedown for a closer inspection!

Beauty tip:

I used CHANEL LiquidEyeliner in Noir along thelash line for an exaggeratedcat eye effect, adding extra

lashes on just the very outeredges for added length.
