Case Studies Waste Retrieval Machine RM2

Our customer needed to remotely remove 760 tubes of nuclear waste encased in concrete below ground and repackage in Nirex approved containers for long term storage. Assystem Energy and Nuclear was engaged to project manage and provide a full turnkey solution for the safe remote removal of the waste, interfacing with existing flask transfer facilities in the building. The contract was for the project management, concept, detail design, justification, procurement, manufacture, test and inactive commissioning of remote handling equipment.

Project Outcomes

Subcontractors selected and managed successfully

Innovative machine operating above specified throughput

5 years from concept to full operation Final cost within customer constraint Accelerated campaign times against LTP

Engage - International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Located in Cadarache, Southern France, ITER is a one of a kind global collaboration, which is scheduled for completion in 2018. The entire site will have to be built from scratch, including the reactor buildings, infrastructure and power distribution systems.

Our Added Value

The €150-million contract, is the biggest ever awarded in Europe, covering 30 buildings. What won Assystem Energy and Nuclear the contract was the fact that we were able to set up the international Engage joint venture with Iosis of France, Empresarios Agrupados of Spain and Atkins of the United Kingdom. This alliance brings together all the requisite competencies and capabilities in an international framework.

THE ART OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Page 2: Major Project Management

Project Management Effective project management requires bringing together the client, internal team members, partners and suppliers with a common understanding, plan and focus to deliver a successful outcome that satisfies all stakeholder requirements. At Assystem, we have developed and honed a bespoke Project Management Methodology that enables us to safely deliver projects and programmes of varying scale to time, to cost and to quality.

Delivering a successful project requires a combination of skills, with two identifiable main streams of activity. The above chart illustrates the way in which these two skill sets interact with a project. The “Engineering” oriented skills relate to those necessary to act in a management role in a high technology environment. The “Commercially” oriented skills relate to those necessary to put the project into a business context and allow effective judgements to be made, taking into account the full picture, ensuring that profitability is maximised and cash managed effectively. Both skill sets are essential and it is for this reason, the role of Project Management is a specialised and highly valuable skill.

We created the Project Management Institute to consolidate our expertise and build a common framework. A management guide was written which includes all project management procedures, in conjunction to this we produced another guide formalising the best practices in purchasing.

The 5 P’s of Project Managers

The Assystem Project Management Institute

We have our own academic facility which trains project managers in a “common-core syllabus” and issues certifications that formally recognise skill levels. The system is based on well known international standards such as the International Project Management Association and the Association of Project Managers. It takes into account the requirements of customers in the nuclear industry so our certificates have the same value and are aligned to those standards of competence. We also have the Assystem Project Management Community which facilitate knowledge sharing, local workgroups and mentoring of new arrivals. For example, ‘Champions’ have been appointed at each of our centres to organise local activities, injecting life at local level and allowing us to reach new heights of excellence.

The Importance of Trust

We believe that relations with customers hinge on the respect of ethical principals. Project managers have to be transparent, honest and worthy of the trust placed in them by Assystem and our customers.

When the risk inherent in each project transpires, project managers rely on these, the principles of transparency, honesty and trust to communicate and deal effectively with problems. The secret of good risk management lies in knowing the customer, their needs, the quality of dialogue and the relationship.
