VASANA IN MAHABRATH

(SANCHITHA KARMA IN MAHABRATH)

Introduction:

Both Ramyan and Mahabrath are two great Epics in Hindu Mythology and that plays an

Important Role in our day to day life. In this episode we are going to analyse about Vasana of different

characters who have been portrayed by Vayasa Maharashi in Mahabratham. If an Anma takes a birth

it is because of Vasana and it is otherwise known as Sanchita Karmas. If a soul wants to attain

perfection it has to get two clean chits one is a ticket and the other is vasana. When our life is treated

as a journey to travel through this life we must have a Ticket and a Visa, the Ticket is our Subhava and

the Vasana is our Sanchitha Karma. When these two things are clear and flawless then it paves the

way for the Holy Communion with Almighty. Thus sanchitha karmas are nothing but the good and

bad deeds that we make in the course of running of our life. With the death of the Karana Sariram

the Anma comprising the Sooschama Sariram which is Immortal and depart from the Mortal remains

of Isthoola Sariram along with the baggage of Sanchita Karmas either mingle with the Almighty or

takes another innings of birth when the sanchita karmas are not completely absolved. Thus the travel

of the soul takes place and its ultimate aim is to reach the feet of Almighty for getting Mukthi.

The Game of Dice:

The life is a gambling table. In this gambling human being use their body as a gambling

table and also use their Ganendria the five sense organs as their platforms and play the kanmendria

Kama, Krotha, Loba, Matha, Macharium as dicing stones. This can be understood through a

Thirumandiram Song as follows:

Song No: 2866

The human body is like a gambling table and with the influence of

Kanmendrium and Ganendrium along with its three agents Icha Kriya &

Gana starts the game of life without any knowledge of realization and thus the soul is

Covered with a sheath of Maya and Illusion performs the activities of life and earn

Its own karma for getting benefits of life without thinking Almighty blessings

Thus in Mahabratham also Gambling plays an important role and that paved the way for the Great

Battle and in the battle all who have practised Adharma got perished with various reasons and their

role of Karana Sariram acquired with reference to their vasana in their previous birth. Let us analyse

one by one and trace the reasons for their role in this Great Epic Poem.

The role of Santhanu Maharaja:

Santhanu Maharaja in his previous birth he was known as Mahabishak who was

related to Varuna Bahavan and when he attended Bhrimma Gana Sabha without controlling his

Page 2: Mahabaratham& sanchita karma

passion voluptuously looked Ganga when she just entered in the Sabha and while her upper lobe of

dress got removed by a forceful wind and Ganga had also reciprocated that looks of Mahabishak and

this was discovered by Bhrimma and both Ganga and Mahabishak were cursed to take a birth on the

earth. This experiment was conducted for ascertaining the fact that how the participants are

controlling their five sense organ and unfortunately expect Ganga and Mahabishak all others closed

their eyes when the upper lobe of the dress of Ganga was removed by a forceful wind. This proved

that these two were in touch with each other and they were not scrupulous in controlling their senses

and their profile got lowered and hence the Lord Bhrimma cursed them. Thus Santhanu Maharaja

came in the Mahabrath episode.

The role of Bhisma:

Bhisma the eighth son of Santhanu and Ganga, in his previous birth was known as

Prabasan and he was one among the eight Ashta Vasukal. He hatched a plan to steal the Kamadenu

which is living in the Vasista Maharishi Ashram along with other Asta Vasukal. Finally they were caught

hold and were cursed to take a birth in the earth and they were born as child to Santhanu and Ganga

and the eighth son will alone remain after birth and all others were dropped in the Ganges River. Thus

Athivradan later known as Bhisma came in the episode because of his plot he hatched along with other

Asta vasukal. He stole the Kamadhenu because he was motivated to do so by his wife Vasunandhini

for giving its milk to her friend who is living on this earth against the Heavenly Conventions. Prabasan

was main accused in the crime and hence he endured all the pain full stages in the Episode and

remained as a Saviour of the Throne of HastinaPura.

The role of Sathyavthi (the boat woman)

Sathyavathi was a boat woman, in her previous birth was cursed to be born Apsra turned

fish Atrika also known as Macha Kanni and resembled like Sakuntala the daughter of Apsra Meneka

and Viswamitra. Once Sathyavathi was met by Parasara Muni the Grand Son of Vasita Maharishi and

asked her to take him in the boat to cross the river. While crossing the river by his divine Power

copulated with Sathyavathi and gave her a son who is known as Vaysa Maharishi and took him along

with him. In retaliation he also gave her the virginity back and a Fragrance smell called as Parimala

Kantham for her body. Thus Sathyavathi became the mother of Vaysa and at a later date when Ganga

deserted Santhanu Maharaja he was attracted by the Parimala Kantham and again married

Sathyavathi and this paved the way for practising brammachriam throught the life of

Athivradan(Bhisma) the eldest son of Santhanu Maharaj who sacrificed the Throne for the sake of his

father and also promised to protect the Throne.

The role of Dhirudurashtra:

Dhirudurashtra in his previous birth was tyrant king and enjoyed the pleasure and

making fun by plugging out the eyes of swans and allowed them in swimming in the pool of water and

interestingly watched it as a game because of that only he was born as a blind king having lot of passion

for the Throne but could not became the king. As per the provisions of Raja Nidhee he was not allowed

to ascend to the Throne of Hastinapura. Furthermore he was born to Vayasa Maharishi by divine

copulation theory and through which the Krothagini gene of Parasar ( Parasarar is the father of Vayasa

Maharishi) and Greedy and excessive passion on the Throne genome(Greedy Gene) came from the

Sathyavathi the mother of Vaysa Maharish and her father. Thus he inherits bad Sancitha karma and

accordingly he played his role throughout the story and finally perished in the forest fire.

Page 3: Mahabaratham& sanchita karma

The role of Vidura:

Vidura the son of a Maid Servant and Vayasa Maharishi, in his previous birth was

Ema Dharma Rajan who was cursed by Animandava who was wrongly implicated in a theft case and

was severely punished for the crime. Animandava by his divine power enquired about his punishment

and Ema Dharma replied that when he was young child he used to torture small insects with a sharp

needle and pierced them and hence he was punished for the crime by placing him in the sharp edged

Kalu Maram where he has to die gradually. Animandava explained that the sin that he committed

when he was young could not go to his account instead it will go the Parents accounts and also

explained such provisions of Scriptures. Therefore he cursed Ema Dharma to be born as Vidura and

advised him to learn about all the provisions of Manu Nidhi and get himself mastered in these

provisions and in the process he would be also humiliated by all people as a Son born to Dhadi the

maid servant.

The role of Kandhari:

Kandhari the daughter of king Subalar who ruled Khandra Desam which is now called

as Khandakar and situated in Afganistan. Khandhari in her previous janma carelessly poured the rice

boiled water in the soil and as a result it destroyed the 100 eggs of an Insect which cursed her tit for

tat and because of that only she delivers 100 sons and all those 100 sons got perished in the battle of

Mahabratham.

The Role of Sakuni:

Sakuni the brother of Kandhari was prince of Kandara Desam presently situated in

Khandakar in Afganistan. Sakuni vehemently opposed the marriage proposal brought by Bishma for

the blind king Dhiruthurashtra and against his wishes the marriage was solemnised by the muscle

power of Bhisma and from that moment onwards Sakuni developed an Animosity toward Hastinapura

Kingdom and vowed to destroy the Kingdom. He was portrayed as a symbol of evil and tricks and his

mind got filled with wickedness and he perfectly worked in the episode but he could not conquer as

his mission was not having any principles of Dharma. Lord Krishna specially took an Avatar to establish

Dharma and foiled all of his tricks and lead Pandavas through the gates of victory. On the 17th day of

war Sakadevan killed Sakuni and thus his mission was coming to an end and finally he was blessed by

Lord Krishna despite his cruelty because he discharged his function scrupulously in order to revenge

but not met with success.

The role of Kunti:

Kunti also known as Priti was a daughter of Suresana and was given to his friend who

was a king known as Kunti Bhojan and Kunti Bhojan adopted kunti as her daughter and she was asked

to serve Duruvasa Maharishi without any complaint. Durvasa became happy by the service of Kunti

and preached a Mantra through which she can summon any Deva and get her a child from them. This

had helped her when she understand that her husband Pandu could not conjugate with her for a child

because of a curse that Pandu got from a Muni

Page 4: Mahabaratham& sanchita karma

The role of Karna:

Karna the eldest son of Kunthi was a Demon in his previous birth and known as

Sakasrakavachan and got blessed by Surya Dev who blessed him with thousands of Armours which

covered his body and no one could kill him. He committed lot of atrocities on common people and as

a result Lord Vishnu by an Avatar got born in to a Twin as Naran and Narayanan. If anyone who wants

to kill Sakasrakavachan has to perform 1000 years penance and acquire strength then only he could

remove one Kavacham of the demon and make him weak. The twins of Naran and Narayanan in the

course of battle with him one performed the penance the other engaged the Demon in the battle

finally his armours were gradually destroyed. Knowing this fact the demon ran away from the battle

field and got an asylum in the stomach of Surya Dev who protected him. In the subsequent birth

Naran came as Arjuna and Narayana came as Lord Krishna and finally destroyed Karna. In the

subsequent birth Sakasrakavachan became Karna and gifted as a son to Kunthi Matha when she was

Young and before her marriage inadvertently without knowing the consequences playfully chanted

the Mantra of Duruvasamaharishi and the remaining facts will be known to all.

The role of Drupadi:

Drupadi the daughter of Durupadan the King of Panchalam appeared in a specially

conducted Yagna to destroy Hastinapura Kingdom and got adopted by the king Drupadan also plays

an important role in the Mahabratham who vowed to kill all the 100 sons of Dhruthurshtra the blind

King of Asthinapura. Drupadi in her previous birth, she was a daughter to the King Nala and Damyandi

and during that janma she invoked the blessing of Lord Shiva and requested to have a husband with

14 good characters but Lord Shiva replied that no one has such 14 characters but Drupadai insisted

her request and stick to her wish. Therefore Lord Shiva blessed her with five husbands and that too

will happen in the next janma. Accordingly she became the adopted Daughter of the Panchala King

Drupadan and married all the five Pandavas and became the bone of contention when she was lost in

the game of dice and was disrobed in the open Darbar Hall and humiliated by all brothers of Duriodana

and that issue became the main issue for the killing of all those who stood by the side of Adharma.

The Role of Lord Krishna:

Lord Krishna being an Avatar of Maha Vishnu plays an important role in Mahabrath

and preached the Scripture Bagavad Geetha to all Mankind and without taking any weapon by His

own ethics imbibed with Dharma destroyed all those who are unscrupulous and practised Adharma.

Though being an Avatar of Mahavishnu He could not escape from His Sanchitha Karma too. In his

previous Avatar He was lord Rama and Killed Vanara Raja Valli by hiding in a place when he was fighting

in a battle with his brother Sukriva. In his birth as lord Krishna after completing the Mahabratham

when He was taking rest in a tree, Valli in his next birth came as Jara who was a hunter examined the

leg of lord Krishna from a distance and that looked like a bird in his eyes and as a result he shoot an

arrow and that ended His role in the Dupara Yuga and went back to Vaikuntam.

Page 5: Mahabaratham& sanchita karma

The role of Amba:

Amba was the eldest three daughters of Kasi Rajan and she was in love with Prince Salva

Desam and her love was shattered by the action of Bhisma and here also he showed his muscle pwer

and not his wisdom and unnecessarily incurred the wrath of a woman and earned his negative Karma

and that paved the way for Bhisma’s destruction. Then Amba killed herself by making a vow that she

would come again in her next birth and take revenge on Bhisma. Accordingly in her next birth she was

known as Sigandi and became the daughter of Panchala Rajan Dhrupadan. In the battle of Mahabrath

she fulfilled her ambition and killed Bhisma the Great Warrior and Saviour of the Throne of

Hastinapura.

Thus we can conclude that Vasana in our previous birth determines everything in our

current birth. Some of the important characters alone have been dealt in order to ascertain the above

title and with a note again in Thirumandiram which is being paraphrased as follows:

Song No. 2067

The soul thus generated under the influence of Kanmendrium tend to

make mistake as if no one available to watch it. But the lord Shiva mingled

with the air and with His omnipresence He is always watching the soul’s proceedings

One who realizes His presence everywhere understands Him as He is the one who is

ever watching superintendent, does not commit mistake in this world.

We commenced with a song in Thirumandiram and end with a song from the same

Scripture.

Conclusion:

Thus in Mahabrath so many characters have been portrayed by Vedavysa and all of them

will be responsible and earned their Sanchitha Karma in the process of living and finally pays the

penalty. From this what we can understand is all of our actions are being closely watched by the

Almighty’s representative and chronologically recorded and accordingly our life is being tuned in our

current birth and by realising the above facts we have to choose our life and get ourselves relived from

the cruel clutches of vasana and get it absolved and get ourselves solemnised and sanctified and that

ultimately pave the way for Mukthi.
