You get a rush of energy whenyoure swimming. I do one early morning on Thursday at six o clock foran hour.I do the G.K.N.S basketball on Saturday at nine oclock. Our coach is Ed,he is really tall and he is amazing at basketball. He is a great coach. Healways teaches us new skills and stuff. Basketball is great fun to do withfriends. Lots of people from school do basketball.

I usually playfootball at break time in school and on my road with my friends. All sports are amazing fun. You have to have harmony on your team to

play sports. You have to have respect to play sports and have to believein yourself to play sports. Sports are great, you get a kind of rush whenyou play. I recommend sports to everyone. Naoise Cautley

Diocesan Synod 2013 (From David Millar)The Archbishop began by acknowledging that the conventional church

often closed down change and spoke of the Church of Irelandsmembers living as Anglicans, but growing in Inter-Faith engagement, helping to break down barriers, some of which are internal. Early on aBill was introduced to replace the 21-year old financial plan. Current financialpressures quickly emerged. Some parishes in spite of their great need cannot affordcurates, while others found their assessments unduly burdensome. Even moreconcerning was the pressure under which Education labours. In spite religionsacknowledgement in the Constitution, secularisation creeps onward. This (notsectarianism) is the danger the countrys overwhelming Christianity faces - andthreatens community life. Ethics and morality may be taught through religion moreeffectively than all the regulation which follows from expensive reports on bullying.Visiting speakers included the Archbishop of Hong Kong. Next years diocese Synod

will be a one-day affair, thanks to an amendment to standing orders proposed by ourown rector, the Revd Niall Sloane which also will permit a reduction in parochialrepresentation and a rotation of venue.

Change everywhere - (but not we hope in the collection).

A day in the life of . Nicky LogueGeneral Manager & Director of Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney

I have been fortunate and delighted to work as GeneralManager of this big busy hotel for over 9 years now. Thebusiness of the hotel is very diverse and we look aftermany guests from corporate to conference, leisure, weddings, dinners as well as the great support we get fromlocal residents in our restaurants , bars and fitness centre. My role involves managing, motivating and leading a team of

Managers who individually have responsibility for their departments. I also have toensure we are doing all that we can to drive sales and achieve budgets on the topline and most importantly on the bottom line. The Castle has a long tradition oflooking after our guests from all over the world very well and we continue to seewhat more we can do on a daily basis to improve upon our standards and guestcare. Feedback is very important to us and we love to get constructive feedbackwhich we act upon quickly.I am fortunate that no two days are the same which makes my job very interestingbut in many ways a Hotel Managers role is like a vocation as it is difficult to switchoff even on days off.

I work with an owner who is passionate about the business and together we workclosely with the team to develop, improve and grow the business. We continuallylook at future developments, refurbishment and explore new revenue lines andinnovative ideas.I am involved locally to drive tourism and currently I am Chair of Dalkey BusinessGroup and President of the Irish Hospitality Institute for a 2 year term which Ienjoy greatly.

    AROUND THE HOME

Thinking of Re-decorating?Redecorating your home is something you either love or loath. If youare one of those who prefers to do it yourself because of financialreasons or because you cannot find someone to do it for you, thenhere are some tips.

Remove as much furniture and belongings as possible.Cover all flooring and any remaining furniture with old sheets.Remove fittings where possible and use masking tape to protect those

remaining.Make sure that any electrical, gas or water services will not be effected by

    your work.

Fill any cavities in walls & woodwork and then sand down to make thesurface smooth.Clean all surfaces in preparation for painting.Start on the ceiling, cutting into the edges with a small brush before painting

the main surface with either a large brush or roller as you prefer. On new woodwork use a primer followed by one or two undercoats as

necessary. For a perfect finish lightly sand with fine grade paper betweencoats.

Then paint the main side walls with two coats as necessary. Finally, paint all wood surfaces with your choice of top coat paint making

sure you have no drip marks. The most important part is in preparation and taking care of what you

are doing. Make sure the room is well ventilated to reduce paintodours. During the process enjoy copious cups of tea!

Green FingersSeason of mists and Mellow Fruitfulness: Bill RussellOctober is a month in the garden which brings the lastburst of Summer Grandeur, and sees the gradual dyingback of many plants and shrubs. For a gardener itheralds in the Harvest, and the ripening of the crops. The use of many shrubs which are highly coloured suchas Liquidambar, Acers (Maple) or Itea will carry onright into the Winter. This is the time to purchase these shrubs - they will

become established by next year. The Acers need a sheltered part of thegarden, so avoid windy sites. This month is the time for Autumn floweringbulbs and corms and these purchased now will give a great display next year.Suggestions are miniature Cyclamens, which once established will seed happilyall over the garden and look lovely around trees or shrubs and will flourisheven in the driest places. Other choices can be Nerines or Colchicums, thelatter spring into flower without any leaves and look so fragile against the baresoil. The leaves appear after the flowers have faded, again once established willspread rapidly. It is a busy month for gardeners, for apart from setting Springbulbs, Narcissi (Daffodils, etc.) and in November, Tulips for Spring display, thework of cutting down and pruning shrubs has now commenced.

Diocesan Synod 2013 (From David Millar)A new triennium promises refreshment for the General Synod, but thechairmanship of a new Primate in the middle of the three-yearparliamentary term heralds change, reflecting recent events from Rometo Canterbury. In May, Dr Clarke broke new ground by sharing thechair with other bishops. Most of the attendance out of 648 other members both lay and clericalhave spent much of their time at the annual meeting sitting and listening

until this year when all lay members were gathered into groups ofaround eight to discuss the role of bishops in a changing world.Another first was the passing into law of a Bill - initiated and proposedby our own Rector - extending the period in which Easter Vestrymeetings may be held.As is customary, many aspects of daily life in the island of Ireland areaddressed. One member feared a repetition of the Happanavarexperience, while another took issue with changes in primary education, and detailed discussion ensued regarding the proposed termination ofthe defined benefit clergy pension scheme regarding which similarfailures are sadly recorded in several financial, commercial and stateentities. However, in contrast to experience elsewhere it appears

unlikely that the retirement of its clergy will be compromised by theChurch of Ireland for the sake of making a profit.Frequently the age of membership arises, and this year was noexception. Of course one wants younger people, but there are practicaldifficulties in many instances in their finding the time. Also many peoplenow find themselves bound to retire up to five years later than whenthey set out in the world of remuneration. The Roman Catholic official clerical guest told a good story. He was at aschool and asked the class what they would like to be when they growup. The boys trotted out the usual ambitions pop-star, tv presenter, politician, and so on except for one who remained notably silent. Thepriest questioned him and eventually the boy said that he wanted to bepossible. What makes you say that? Well, came the reply, my parentssay that I am simply Impossible. May all of us be possible.
