ILLINOIS 4-H JR. LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, JLC
The Illinois 4-H Jr. Leadership Conference, JLC, is a fun filled overnight weekend event that provides jun-ior high delegates with a look into leadership development and opportunities within the 4-H program. This conference is brought to you by the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team. The 2013 JLC is scheduled
for Saturday and Sunday, February 23-24 at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Conference Center in Urbana.
JLC is open to 7th and 8th grade 4-H members and Operation Military Kids (OMK) Extension participants. At this event, these members have the opportunity to bring a non-4-H friend!!! The conference gives junior high youth a chance to develop their leadership skills, meet and interact with youth from across the state, and view state leadership in action, while connecting with the State 4-H Youth Leadership Team.

I want to share a decision I have made. After careful consideration, I have made the
decision to retire from University of Illinois Extension. My retirement is effective Feb-
ruary 1, 2013, so my last day will be January 31, 2013.
I have truly enjoyed my Extension career. I have had the pleasure of working with
many wonderful colleagues, and also with many, many excellent volunteers. The
strong 4-H program that exists in all three counties continues to thrive and be suc-
cessful because of the caliber of the volunteers who provide leadership to the pro-
gram.
I have also had the pleasure of working with and learning from hundreds of youth. It
has been a remarkable experience to see them grow and develop into confident, suc-
cessful adults. It is very rewarding to see many of them return to the 4-H Family as
4-H parents and volunteers!
The following quote, taken in part from a TV show, expresses what I am thinking as I approach retirement;
“I'm thankful for my years spent with this family, for everything we shared, eve-
ry chance we had to grow. I'll take the best of them with me and lead by their
example wherever I go…There are things we don't want to happen, but have
to accept. Things we don't want to know, but have to learn. And people we
can't live without but have to let go.”
As I prepare for the next chapter in my life I want each of you to know that I truly cher-
ish the time I have shared with all of you; some a number of years, others just the re-
cent few. And while it is indeed hard to let go, I am confident that the passion and
dedication all you have for the 4-H program will continue, and that the support I re-
ceived from so many of you will be shared in the same way with my successor.
Thanks for making my time with you most rewarding!

Quality Assurance & Ethics Certification is mandatory for livestock project enroll-
ment and 4-H exhibition. All 4-H beef, sheep, swine, horse, dairy, meat goat and poultry exhibitors must
complete QA&E Certification in order to exhibit livestock in these project areas at both local shows and/or at State
Fair. Members must complete the training via the website one time during their showing career. Those that have
completed it in the past will be eligible to show. The website is now open at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/
qaec/ Please avoid disappointment at the 4-H Show by completing the training NOW, or at your earliest conven-
ience. DO NOT wait until the last minute to complete the training. Doing so may result in the inability to show
a livestock project by being dropped from the project, and forfeiture of premium.

4-H Premium Update 4-H Premium checks will be distributed in much the same manner as last year. As soon as we have re-ceived the funds from the state, we will print premium checks and distribute them to 4-H members. Cash In on a Wonderful 4-H Opportunity From Farm Credit Farm Credit is pleased to announce their Community Improvement Grant Program for 2013. Grants will be awarded in the amount of $250 to 4-H clubs who carry out meaningful projects to better their com-munities. 4-H Legacy of Leadership Scholarship OR THE Illinois 4-H Livestock Scholarship
Several $1,000 scholarships are available for 4-H members who are seniors in high school, or already attending col-
lege. The postmark deadline for both of these scholarship opportunities is March 1.

Scholarship Opportunities
2013 Farm Credit Agriculture Scholarship: www.fcsillinois.com FCS of Illinois is awarding twenty $1,500 college scholarships to current H.S. seniors planning to enroll
full-time in an Ag-based college curriculum next fall. Recipients receive $1,000 for Fall 2013 semester &
$500 if you choose to pursue an Ag degree during Fall 2015.
Selection criteria: academic achievement, participation & leadership within school and community organ-
izations & a commitment to pursuing an ag-related career.
Applicants MUST complete both an on-line registration form & a scholarship application. Both can be
found on our website www.fcsillinois.com—click on “Scholarships 2013”.
The University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Sciences is offering a schol-
arship match to 2013 Farm Credit Ag Scholars who enroll fulltime in the College of ACES during either
the Fall 2013 or Fall 2015 semesters. Recipients who enroll in ACES next fall with receive their scholar-
ship match from the College of ACES in Spring 2014 and Spring 2016 (semesters following the Farm
Credit scholarship (payments). Recipients who transfer to ACES in the Fall 2015 semester are eligible
for the scholarship match which is available as a $500 credit for the Spring 2016, Fall 2016 & Spring
2017 semesters.
University of Illinois Extension 4-H Key Award This state recognition is for older 4-H members and rewards those who exhibit outstanding 4-H leader-
ship, community service & service as a mentor. A member may receive this recognition once during their
4-H career.
Applicants must be 4-H members, 16 to 18 years of age by September 1 or the 4-H year in which they are
applying. (Applications are due in March, so members must be 16-18 years of age by the previous Sep-
tember 1). Each Extension unit may submit a maximum of two applications for award consideration each
year. A maximum of 30 4-H members will receive the Illinois 4-H Key Award annually. Awards are pre-
sented at the Illini Summer Academies in June. Applications are due to the Ext. Office by Feb. 18. Lo-
cal Ext. offices must submit applications to the State 4-H office, postmarked no later than March 1. http://

Montadale Sheep Essay Contest:
The Illinois Montadale Sheep Breeders Association is sponsoring its 2nd annual essay contest & will be
awarding a Montadale ewe lamb to the winner. The contest is open to IL 4-H or FFA members under the
age of 18 & not currently raising Montadale sheep. The lamb will be presented to the essay winner at
the annual Illinois Montadale Breeders picnic held in June. The winning essay will also be published in
the spring edition of the 2013 “Montadale Momentum” magazine.
The Essay should describe why the contestant would like a Montadale ewe lamb, future plans for the
lamb & how they will care for it. Essays will be judged on their content & age appropriateness. The win-
ner will be expected to enroll in sheep as a 4-H project & exhibit the lamb at the 2013 Illinois State Fair
Jr. show.

Anyone interested in participating in the Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show, please make note that the show re-
quires all Market Beef, Market Hogs, Market Lambs, Meat Goats, and Feeder Calves to be nominated for
the show by submitting an acceptable DNA sample.
The cost to exhibitors in Illinois will be $5 per head. This fee covers the expense of material and handling.
All fees will be paid to the County Extension Office at DNA collection time.
If you are interested in participating, please contact the Extension Office no later than February 1, 2013,
so we can obtain the correct amount of collection envelopes.

June 24 – 27 at Western Kentucky 4-H Camp in Dawson Springs, Kentucky

Metro Programming
Granite City Workforce Development Initiative: Granite City High School, Granite City Economic Develop-ment, Madison County Employment and Training, the Madison-Bond Workforce Investment Board, and Uni-versity of Illinois Extension are partnering to carry out a year-long 4-H youth development initiative called “E4U” (“Entrepreneurship for You”). 41 teens from eight school clubs completed Phase I “E4U: Taking the Lead”, and five teens from the 2011-2012 pilot program completed Phase II – “E4U: Be the “E!” in Decem-ber. Phase 1 included leadership development training and interaction with Granite City business profession-als, and in Phase II, the participating teens developed a business plan and presented it to a panel of six busi-ness leaders for critique and feedback. Teens in Phase I are now moving to Phase II spring semester, and Phase II teens are working to start a business with support from the local business community.
“Teens Teaching Youth Biotechnology” Program: The educational program is underway involving six trained teen teachers from Cahokia High School teaching a series of biotechnology lessons to three groups of fourth, fifth, and sixth graders from the ExCEL 4-H Afterschool Program at Huffman Elementary School in Cahokia. The first series involving 25 younger students wrapped up in December, and the next group starts in January.
4-H SPIN Clubs: Adult volunteer leaders are reorganizing an East St. Louis gardening SPIN Club, an area robotics SPIN Club, and an Alton High School 4-H FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Team functioning much like a SPIN Club does. 4-H club members learn about a specific subject area or 4-H project for at least six sessions in the SPIN Club format. Additional SPIN Clubs are potentially forming in an afterschool pro-gram and in a church.

Military 4-H Program at Scott Air Force Base Youth Center
There is great interest among youth in robotics. Twelve members along with five members on a waiting list have reg-
istered for a Robotic SPIN group. (limited by the computer lab size and kit computer programs). Utilizing the We Do
Lego Robotic kits, the initial club members became oriented to programming and constructing basic robots that move
and make sound during the months of November and December. These members will graduate to the more advance
Lego MindStorm programming in Feb and March 2013. Simultaneously, these members will act as Jr. Leaders and
assist new, incoming members who will be starting additional clubs in the Open Recreation and School-Age program-
ming. Plans are also underway for members to attend the First Lego League World Festival tournament in St. Louis in
April to view the activities.
Junk Drawer Robotics club has also formed within the school-age section of the Youth Center. The targeted youth
are children 9-13 that are enrolled in the before/after school program. The club meets twice weekly, with activities
introduced on Tuesdays and construction to be concluded at Thursday’s meeting. Members must plan, design, and
develop a material list and budget for each project. To date, the club members have completed the catapult and clip
mobile machines. Mr. Perry, club leader has indicated that the members have asked if they can come in and work on
their projects between club meetings. Parents have provided positive feedback and additional “engineering” projects
such as toothpick bridges have been built during off club time.

Congratulations to Arla Ault, with G C Novas. Arla celebrated 35 years as leader of GC Novas 4-H
Club in Granite City. Arla was recognized for her years of service during the Madison County Achievement program, on Thursday, December 6, at the Extension Branch Office in Collinsville. Congratulations and THANK YOU, ARLA! Arla will be mentoring the new leader, Lori Denton.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION to Charlene Bandy for 25 years of Leadership to the
Town & Country 4-H Club; Debbie Adamick, 20 years with Marine Stars 4-H Club;
Sandy Ohren, 48 years with Pin Oak Progressors 4-H Club. We look forward to
your leadership for many more GREAT 4-H years.
Madison County Steer Weigh-In The Madison County Steer Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the Glenn Grotefendt
farm in Marine, beginning at 9:00 a.m. All 4-H members wishing to participate in the Beef Premiere pro-
gram, and/or enter the Rate of Gain class must participate in the weigh-in. Steers should be haltered for
the weigh-in. Call the office to register participation: 618-344-4230.
There will be NO CHARGE for Electronic Identification tags this year. The State 4-H
Office is covering the cost of all tags for cattle, lambs, and goats.
If 4-H members are considering exhibiting a steer at the 2013 Illinois State Fair,
please note that ALL STEERS, Premiere and non-Premiere, must be EID tagged,
weighed, and tattooed.
Madison County Federation News Thank you to the Madison County 4-H members for providing refreshments for the county Achievement
Program, and for assisting with award presentations at the event. We appreciate their help in making
Achievement Program a success!
Federation members gathered at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Worden on Monday, December 3. Following
the business meeting, the group enjoyed holiday refreshments, games, and a gift exchange.

Federation member’s also participated in the Granite City Twilight Holiday Parade. They created a float
based on Annabelle’s Wish and had a live calf on their float. They promoted 4-H in the parade.
The group is also planning a spring dance for middle and high school age 4-H members. Please watch
the newsletter for more information about the spring dance.

St. Clair Beekeepers’ Association to offer a Beginner and Public Informational Beekeeping Class
The honey bee is one of the most fascinating and valuable resources on our planet. Have you ever thought of becoming a beekeeper? Are you curious about the plight of the honey bee in recent times? Do you wonder if there are things you can do to aid our honey bees; even if you don’t wish to keep them? If so, the St Clair Beekeepers’ Association would like to invite the public to our 2013 Beginner and Public Informational Beekeeping Class to be held on Saturday, February 16, at the Madison County Farm Bureau, 900 Hillsboro Ave., Edwardsville, IL, 62025 from 8:15 am to 2:30 pm. Cost is $25/person, $35/couple. Refreshments and a light lunch (for those who pre-register by February 9th) will be available along with door prizes, a raffle for a complete hive and a nucleus colony as grand prizes, vendors, and literature and hand-outs including supplier’s catalogs. St. Clair County Steer Weigh-In The St. Clair County Steer Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, February 9, at the 4-H Ag Building at
Scheve Park in Mascoutah, beginning at 9:00 a.m. All 4-H members wishing to participate in the Beef
Premiere program, and/or enter the Rate of Gain class must participate in the weigh-in. Steers should
be haltered for the weigh-in. Call the office to register participation: 618-344-4230.
There will be NO CHARGE for Electronic Identification tags this year. The State 4-H Office is covering
the cost of all tags for cattle, lambs, and goats.
If 4-H members are considering exhibiting a steer at the 2013 Illinois State Fair, please note that ALL
STEERS, Premiere and non-Premiere, must be EID tagged, weighed, and tattooed.

Share-The-Fun
Do you have fond memories of Share the Fun? Or perhaps you have never even heard of Share the Fun. The Turkey Hill Busy Bee's club would like to host a Share the Fun evening this year as part of our club Theatre Arts project. For many years, Share the Fun was a very popular event held at the Turkey Hill Grange. Clubs were invited to present a short skit/act/song/presentation, etc. as a club. This was a great way for clubs to work together deciding on a skit, perhaps sewing costumes or designing simple sets, and learning to work as a group as they practiced their act or presenta-tion for this one special evening. Turkey Hill Grange is excited for the Busy Bees to bring this event back to 4-H and is willing to allow us to utilize their facility. We would like to know if any clubs in Madison/Monroe/St. Clair would be interested in participating in a Share the Fun evening? 2013 conferences & camp programs. There are a variety of local, regional & state op-
portunities for youth to participate & the funding will provide a partial support to registra-

Scholarship Application” on the Unit website under St. Clair Co. 4-H.

Monroe County Steer Weigh-In
The Monroe County Steer Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the Monroe County Fair-
grounds, Waterloo, beginning at 8:00 a.m. All 4-H members wishing to show a market steer at the 2013
Monroe County Fair, must participate in the weigh-in.
The spring showmanship competition will be held in conjunction with the weigh-in. All members participat-
ing in the weigh-in are encouraged to participate in the showmanship contest.

birthday on or before September 1, 2012, are encouraged to review the application criteria for the
$1,500 academic scholarships sponsored by the Monroe County Extension & 4-H Education
