From the romance, nature–inspired shades, sinuous shapes and sensitivecolouring o Art Nouveau, to the delicate side o 1920’s glamour, the sot side othe season is all about tinting the skin with washes o colour.
Veering between the pretty and pure and something more glamorously edged, these looks are less about recreating a retro look rom the past and more aboutreinterpreting emininity by capturing the spirit o an era.
While lips and cheeks get a look-in with stains o ondant-y peach, apricot andstrawberry tones, it’s a trend that’s essentially eye driven: lids and lower lashlinesenlivened with diuse, single-toned watercolour washes o pastels and fesh tonesthrough to mink and rubs o charcoal. “What really eels contemporary is a colourthat’s washed all the way up to the eyebrow, without any shading and highlightingin it,” adds Terry Barber noting that structured shading and multi tones would
ast turn these colours in a bridesmaid-y direction. “The edges are still beautiullyblurred so that the eect isn’t Pop Art” he adds.
The kit? “Second-skin texture powders and creams and bigger brushes,” explainsLyne Desnoyers. “A larger brush gives a looseness to the application, which iskey.” You’ll likely want to orgo mascara, too — there’s still an enduring appealto a mascara-less lash this season, now a mainstay in the beauty lexicon omodernizing a look.
It’s sensual, ultra eminine, fuid and rened without being sugary or cute: paredback pretty at it’s best…

It’s athletic yet chic…plumped and pumped…wet-eect and maxed with moisture:skin this season is all about a dewy, sporty, spa-resh eel.
It’s near to naked but certainly not raw — the new complexion is about perectionthat’s elite in its amplication o health and hydration: a ocus on skincare andplenty o ‘pre and post production’ on base is essential.
“This is a beautiul, glowing, no-makeup look with a more sporty and real eelto it than we’ve seen in the past: there’s denitely nothing relevant about a ull-coverage base this season,” conrms Diane Kendal, doyenne o an ‘apparentlyeortless’ nude look. “Take a heavy oundation and add all these wet highlightsand it goes into ‘alien’ territory,” agrees Sam Bryant. “You want base to lookperect, but still very sheer and youthul.”
How to achieve it? “It’s all about what you put underneath or on top o aoundation now,” explains Terry Barber. “Priming it, spritzing it, bung it,moisturizing it, massaging it to give it a super hydrated eel.”
Highlights and gloss are back in a big way, too. “We’re quasi not powdering atall this season…or, i we are, there are so many wet highlights added that theeect is still utterly about sporty, plump skin,” says Lyne Desnoyers. Cue a rise inhighlighting with imperceptible fesh — akin Metal X tones and skin-twin shades oCream Colour Base, which retain a real skin quality superior to the more syntheticeect o Gloss Texture. “Think o it as hyper-highlighting,” says Terry Barber.
While a sportive skin is the canvas, a streamlined detail matters too: add anenergetic strength and sophistication to the look with a ull (but not heavy ormasculine) straighter, squarer brow that’s deepened without being drawn-in. Orthink linear on the eye, adding structure and dimension to the ace with a gesture
o liner.

Every summer begs the inevitable beauty question: tan-chic, or not? Or, moreprecisely: what treatment o warmth eels appropriate or the warm season now?
For SS2012, it’s certainly not about a desert tan, even though the looks reerencea worldly, well-travelled woman. In act, it’s less about warming up the complexionitsel and more about using tan-relevant and tan-related shades to accentuate thelips, cheeks and eyes.
Palette-wise, think metallic, creamy copper, rust, terracotta and peach and sidelineanything that’s traditionally fat, matte and brown-based. An element o refectionand heat is the key update to make on tan tones or SS2012. “Tan shades with ametallic edge have a preciousness and sophistication,” conrms Lyne Desnoyers.“Their inherent light-refective nature ensures they never draw lines on the ace inthe same way as fat colour, making them appear immediately chic and fattering.”
The ocus is on the eatures, yet the skin is still the ultimate canvas or theselooks. Go easy on base and build in an athletic bone structure with metallichighlights that create what Terry Barber is calling ‘Olympian cheekbones.’ “Nowcheekbones are very beautiul and not so masculine as we’ve seen in the past. We’re using a lot o Metal-X in Fusion Gold or Cream Colour Base in Shell on topo them — an extreme highlight takes away the need to contour,” he explains.
Add something o a burnished eye or an earth or sand toned lip and you’re goodto go: wisely warm and not a hint o WAG…

Grati inspired. Dynamic. Stripped back. Ultimately urban…this seasongoes aster with punchy, sportive colours setting the stopwatch on ashionand beauty alike…
Gorgeous, not grittily grati-esque, it’s about wearing neoprene colour againstplump, workout-resh skin and an aerodynamic brow in an eortlessly chic, considered way. A move on rom the aggressively hard-hitting, stamped-onbrights o last summer, the new sophisticated athleticism o this season’suelled-up shades is about giving the ace a beautiul detail rather than a erceshock o colour.
While they tap into the trend or energetically engineered, high-tech (and highcolour, high print, high shine…) abric that is so omnipresent this season, thenew bright beauty statements o SS2012 have a subtlety to their statements:yes, these scuba shades are striking, but they’re never stamped on or harsh….
Think touchable and sensual…intelligent and singular…pure colour but notPop Art…desirable not Disco…and don’t work too hard at it. I it looks likeyou’ve simply swiped on a strong lip on your way back rom the gym, you’vepretty much nailed it…
