Giant Steps Sexton Chardonnay 2006 Giant Steps was established in 1997 by the Sexton family soon after they sold their highly successful Devil’s Lair Winery in Margaret River and moved to the Yarra Valley. Giant Steps is named after the first solo album by John Coltrane, who also made a leap of faith when he split with Miles Davis in the late 1950s. Under winemaker Steve Flamsteed the wines are vinified at the specialised gravity-flow, small-batch winery in the Yarra Valley’s historic town of Healesville. The winemaking process involves minimal intervention to faithfully express each wine’s vineyard site, vintage and culture. 93 points, James Halliday Wine Companion 2009 5 Star Winery James Halliday Wine Companion 2009

Bouquet: Ripe lime citrus aromas with a backdrop of lemon blossom and musk nuances. Stoneleigh Rapaura Series Sauvignon Blanc 2008 The unique terroir, where the Stoneleigh vineyards lie, defines the wine’s independent qualities. Located on the northern side of the Wairau Valley, in close proximity to Marlborough’s main river, the Wairau, the vignerons have located the vineyards on deep, infertile gravel beds covered in smooth “sunstones”. These sunstones reflect the sun’s heat during the day, assisting ripening, whilst cool nights maintain intense fruit flavours. These factors combine to produce a wine with its own unique “place”.

Region: Marlborough, New Zealand.Colour: Pale straw with green highlights.Bouquet: Vibrant fruit intensity with upfront passionfruit, white currant and grapefruit. Palate: The palate shows varietal intensity, with many of the aromas continuing onto the palate. The acid is fresh and clean with a lingering fruit driven finish. Cellar: Lime infused snapper.Food Match: Any white meat or shell fish dishes. From the Stoneleigh wines are known for their intense fruit Buying Team: flavours and approachable styles, while wines in Stoneleigh’s Rapaura Series, feature more intense fruit flavours and greater complexity.

One of their most significant contributions was pioneering the Semillon grape in the Hunter Valley. The results speak for themselves. Region: Hunter Valley, New South Wales.Colour: Brilliant golden straw.Bouquet: Aromas of citrus with underlying hints of toast and honey. Palate: A structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus flavours, beginning to display toasty bottle aged complexity.Cellar: Drinking beautifully now up to 2012.Food Match: Roast turkey. From the The 2002 vintage is shaping up to be a classic vintage Buying Team: for the Vat 1. Penfolds Bin 311 Chardonnay 2007 The Penfold’s Bin 311 Chardonnay was first released from the 2005 vintage and the commitment was made to always source from a single cool climate region. Each year a selection is made from a region that best reflects the Bin 311 style. Individual sites are then chosen to respect the ‘terroir’ and to reflect the characters of both vineyard and region. The Penfold’s Bin 311 Orange Chardonnay expresses true regional fruit characters, with a firm mineral acidic backbone complimented by barrel fermentation and maturation in new and old French Barriques. Minimal filtration ensured this wine preserved the elegant fruit flavours derived from our unique vineyards. Region: Orange, New South Wales.Colour: Pale straw.Bouquet: Lifted floral aromas, leaning towards blood orange and white nectarine characters, while subtle nuances of nuttiness add to the complexity. Palate: Vibrant white stone fruit flavours combine beautifully with the almost nougat like flavours on the mid palate. These flavours are highlighted by the soft, refreshing acid back bone that runs a core through the wine with a lingering balanced finish. Cellar: Drinking beautifully now to 2012. Food Match: Spaghetti Carbonara. From the A great example of cool climate Chardonnay. The Buying Team: Penfold’s Bin 311 reputation is growing continually vintage after vintage.

“Here is a rare opportunity to compare 3 cool climate chardonnays. Firstly is the Penfold’s Bin 311 and this particular vintage is from Orange. Tumbarumba has come into its own over the last few years producing complex but elegant Chardonnays and we feature this region with the Hungerford Hill. Finally, Phil Sexton from Giants Steps has gained many accolades for his Yarra Valley Chardonnay and this continues that tradition. These styles are the future of Chardonnay in Australia.
