Welcome to the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. I sincerely hope you enjoy your experience with us, from the time you purchase tickets until after the curtain call.

We take customer service seriously at TPAC. We are constantly investigating ways to expand, improve and enhance our offerings. Our new “Print at Home” option, for example, saves you time and money when you purchase tickets on the telephone or our web site.

I hope you know that we do our best to serve our customers with high quality shows at the lowest possible prices. We recently began to offer $10 tweet seats in the balcony, making TPAC more affordable and accessible to young people. Our season tickets are the most economical and efficient way to enjoy our Broadway series, and include an easy payment plan. TPAC offers substantial group discounts, including $15 student tickets for many of our shows. We send electronic surveys after shows and hope you respond with both compliments and suggestions for ways we can improve our service.

Likewise, TPAC is serious about its mission to serve our entire community beyond the performances presented here. We were, in fact, established by state government to serve the citizens of Tennessee through the performing arts and arts education. We accomplish that mission by:

• Making a difference in the lives of more than 40,000 students each year (more than 1.5 million since 1980) with one of the most comprehensive arts education programs in the United States;

• Contributing an annual state and local economic impact of more than $40 million;

• Providing a performance home (with services at reduced rates) for three resident companies known for the highest quality of professional work

— Nashville Ballet, Nashville Opera, and Tennessee Repertory Theatre — which enrich the cultural landscape of our community;

• Offering customized services for patrons with disabilities, including loss of hearing, vision and mobility;

• Affording the people of Tennessee the same opportunities to enjoy Broadway tours, concerts, and celebrity appearances that audiences enjoy in major cities across the nation; and

• Presenting one-of-a-kind opportunities in the arts to the people of Tennessee, including student audiences — experiences that are unique to TPAC or not widely available nationwide.

Let’s make a dealWe get it, commitment is scary. That’s why we lease cars, order sampler platters, date someone for six years, and make plans at the very last minute. TPAC understands (well, maybe not the dating someone for six years thing). Anyway, the commitment to become an HCA/TriStar Broadway season ticket holder is something we don’t take lightly and neither should you.

Broadway season tickets are an act of faith. You say to us: “TPAC, I’m trusting you to bring me the absolute best Broadway shows available. Some of these titles I know and love, some are unfamiliar. But I believe you won’t let me down. Just give me six nights of entertainment and escape, and I’ll be happy.” It’s the kind of pressure that would keep TPAC employees up at night if we weren’t so confident that we can deliver on this arrangement. With each season we launch, we know we’ve positioned, critiqued, and negotiated within our industry in order to give Nashville one of the country’s finest Broadway season offerings each and every year.

A Broadway season is a journey. It’s assembled to offer beautiful songs, hilarious comedy, thrilling choreography, lush sets and costumes, gripping drama, and even moments to make us think. Some show’s reputations precede them, others are unexpected – they sneak up on you. Surveys from season ticket holders often tell us it is the unfamiliar shows they enjoyed more than the popular titles. That’s the beauty of this season-long journey… it not only lets you mark six dates on your calendar to escape with family or friends, it teaches us to expect the unexpected.

So let’s make a deal… you agree to show up and the Broadway season agrees to sweep you away (without even leaving town).

We couldn’t be more excited that The Nutty Professor Musical is having its world pre-miere in Nashville – a city renowned for creativity, music, and hospitality. Nashville is the perfect place for this production to embark on its journey to Broadway and beyond. The privilege is ours to bring this classic romantic comedy story to the musical stage. The genius of Jerry Lewis was in full view with his 1963 movie The Nutty Professor, and now he has given the public an opportunity to experience this story in the new medium of musical theatre.

Marvin Hamlisch (Pulitzer Prize, oscar, Grammy, emmy, Tony awards) and Rupert Holmes (Tony, Drama Desk awards) have proven to be the perfect team to work with Jerry Lewis on this project. Their collaboration has opened the story up for audiences with song and dance in a way that makes it new again, revealing a new take on the comedy and the tenderness of the human story. Add to this an illustrious design team - set designer David Gallo (Tony, Drama Desk awards), lighting designer David Weiner, sound designer John Shivers, choreographer JoAnn Hunter, and assistant director and creative coordinator Ray Roderick together with an incredible cast, and a 14-piece “Big Band,” and you can see that The Nutty Professor Musical has all the ingredients for a great musical theatre experience.

The process of creating a new musical for the stage is one of the most complicated and yet exhilarating creative processes in entertainment. Sharing the work with an audience for the first time is a huge milestone in the life of a musical. for The Nutty Professor Musical, Nashville audiences become our newest collaborators. With each performance our company of players finally get to work with the missing piece in the process - YoU. Unlike a movie, where performers are not aware of the relationship with the live audience, your presence at today’s performance has a unique impact on the show. It is one of the wonderful things about live theatre. The stage breathes with every laugh and sigh it senses from the audience. It’s a mystery, and it’s magical!

CREaTIVE TEAM Jerry LewisDirector

Jerry Lewis has been called “The King of Comedy”, the “Consummate entertainer”, and is one of the most recognized people on earth. As the writer, director, and producer of many of his feature films, Jerry Lewis is a comic auteur firmly in the tradition of Chaplin and Keaton. Performing since he was 5 (with his parents in the Catskills), Lewis has been a successful star in every entertainment medium. By the late 40s, with concert shows and regular radio and television appearances, Lewis and his performing partner, Dean Martin, were hailed as the most popular comedy duo in the na-tion. They made their film debut in 1948 and starred in 16 blockbuster comedies before their split

in 1956. Lewis went on to star in over 25 films, 13 of which he directed including The Bellboy, The Ladies’ Man, The Family Jewels, and The Nutty Professor.

In the 80s, Lewis garnered some of the best reviews of his career for his work in Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy and also appeared in the major studio films Mr. Saturday Night and Funny Bones.

Jerry Lewis realized a lifelong dream when he starred on Broadway as Applegate in the successful 1994 revival of Damn Yankees. His 813 “standing room” performances were adored by audiences and critics. He went on to tour with the show and during its second year, the tour broke all attendance records of any previous traveling Broadway production.

Lewis received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 81st Academy Awards. He is the star and director of many hit films, Nobel Peace Prize nominee, french Legion of Honor inductee, recording artist, composer, professor, maestro, inventor of the video assist, and author of The Total Filmmaker and Dean and Me. Jerry Lewis is an American Icon and an International treasure.

Marvin Hamlisch’s life in music is notable for its great versatility as well as substance. for Broadway, he has written the music for his groundbreaking show, A Chorus Line, which received the Pulitzer Prize, as well as They’re Playing Our Song, The Goodbye Girl, and Sweet Smell of Success.

He is the composer of many motion picture scores, including his oscar-winning score and song for The Way We Were and his adaptation of Scott Joplin’s music for The Sting, for which he received a third oscar. His prolific output of scores for films include original compositions and/or musical adaptations for So-phie’s Choice, Ordinary People, The Swimmer, Three Men and a Baby, Ice Castles, Take the Money and

Run, Bananas, Save the Tiger, and his latest effort The Informant!, starring Matt Damon, and directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Hamlisch is a graduate of the Julliard School of Music and Queens College (where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree). He is now working on a new musical called Gotta Dance as well as adapting music for a film about Liberace, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. He has truly enjoyed his collaboration with Rupert Holmes and looks forward to doing another project with him ASAP.

With The Mystery of Edwin Drood, which received the Tony Award for Best Musical, Rupert Holmes also became the first person in Broadway history to solely win Tony awards as author, lyricist and composer. Holmes and Drood received identical honors from the New York Drama Desk, with Holmes receiving a fourth award in their additional category of Best orchestration. His most recent Broadway musical Curtains (in collaboration with the legendary songwriting team of Kander and ebb) earned him the Drama Desk award for Best Book of a Musical, as well as Tony nomina-tions for both Best Book and Best Additional Lyrics. for Say Goodnight, Gracie he received a Tony

nomination and won the National Broadway Theatre Award for Best Play. His Broadway comedy-thriller Accomplice won him the second of his two edgar awards from The Mystery Writers of America. His courtroom drama A Time to Kill (the first stage adaptation of a John Grisham novel) was seen recently at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. and is slated for Broadway next spring. Holmes also created, wrote, and scored all four seasons of AMC’s critically-acclaimed Tv series Remember WENN. His first novel Where the Truth Lies was nominated for both a Nero Wolfe Award and Booklist Award for Best American Mystery Novel, and was adapted into a motion picture by Atom egoyan starring Colin firth and Kevin Bacon. The Mystery of Edwin Drood returns to Broadway this october via the Roundabout Theatre.

Mac PirkleProducer

Mac Pirkle is a 35-year veteran of theatre, film, and video. He co-founded Tennessee’s largest and most successful regional theatre company, Tennessee Repertory Theatre (Tennessee Rep), producing and directing over 65 major theatre productions, including new musicals Some Sweet Day, The Perfect 36 for the Tennessee Bicentennial, A House Divided with Mike Reid, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Dennis DeYoung (STYX). After 25 years in theatre, Mac moved into film & video 12 years ago, bringing the same creative drive and energy into a whole new field. He joined forces with David earnhardt in 2001, successfully bringing ongoing, long-term productions into the earnhardt Pirkle mix of projects. His videos have been honored with more than a dozen national, regional and local awards. Pirkle is now President of Creative Communications and Southern Stage Productions. Returning to the theatre for this production of The Nutty Professor musical is a major step in a two-decade dream to create new musicals that originate in Nashville and move to Broadway.

Ned McLeodExecutive Producer

Ned is a Nashville native and the lead partner in the development of The Nutty Professor musical project, having experience as a producer in film, television and regional theater, as well as being an entertainment lawyer. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. McLeod produced or otherwise supervised film, television, and theater projects for 15 years in California, florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. In television and film, Mr. McLeod has been fortunate to have the oppor-tunity to work in pictures such as Absence of Malice and Nashville, and with such talented directors and producers as Sydney Pollack, Robert Altman, Ralph Rosenbloom, Brian De Palma, Terrence Marsh, Cliff Robertson, John Avildsen, Joseph Adler, and others, and represent artists Mandy Moore, Beyonce, Randy fenoli, Philippe Cousteau and his sister Alexandra, and Justin Timberlake. His work includes writing and acting as well, and spans the media of theater (regional, off-Broadway, domestic, and international touring), motion pictures, television, radio, commercials, indus-trial, and documentary productions. Ned’s favorite theater work, up until this show, has been producing the delightful play Dusa Fish Stas and Vi by english playwright Pam Gems in an equity playhouse in Miami, and handling all of the business affairs for the birth and viral popularity of the global off-Broadway hit Menopause the Musical.
