TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 6Somewhat interestingly, there are some discrepancies in

the credits of songs composed by G Ramanathan in the filmsof 1940s. For example, in the stunning box office bumper hit‘Haridas’ which created a record for running continuously for114 weeks in a single cinema, Broadway Talkies inMadras, according to some sources, Ramanathan composedthe music whereas,in the songbook, the music as well as lyricsare credited to the cult figure and icon of film music, thelegendary Papanasam Sivan. (This writer as part of hisresearch for writing this article viewed the full print of themovie and the credit titles do not mention Ramanathananywhere. The music is attributed to Papanasam Sivan andthere is no credit given for orchestra players as they did in thosedays in some movies.)

‘Sivakavi’, another box office hit of Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, had many songs which became the immortal melodies andsome sources attribute music composing to Ramanathanwhereas, in the credit titles, only Papanasam Sivan’s nameappears and there is no mention of G Ramanathan even in thesongbook.

The noted violin player who later became a master of hisinstrument in the world of Classical Carnatic Music, V.Govindasami Naicker, told this writer in a long chat years agothat Papanasam Sivan invariably suggested the tune of thesong also while writing the lyrics. Ramanathan only composedthe background orchestration of the songs. During that periodGovindasami Naicker, not yeta big name in Classical CarnaticMusic world, used to play the violin for movies and his nameappears as the violin player in many movies.

(This writer knew Govindasami Naicker well during the1960s and laterand, for a while, Naicker taught CarnaticMusic to two of his aunts in Mylapore. An excellent conversa-tionalist with a fine sense of humour he narrated many eventsin his life in movies and later the ‘Kutcheri circuit. Some ofwhich sadly are unprintable even in this permissive period!)

There is another interesting point about the songs in moviesin Tamil and other South Indian languages in those days. Untilabout the 1950s, there was no system of tape recording ofsongs (or what is known as prerecording of the movie songs ina sound recording studio sung by the artist and the orchestraaccompanying him). When the film was shot, the song wouldbe played on the playback machine and the artistes on thescreen would move their lips in consonance with the words andthe tune. Before the system came into force, a song was sungtwice - in the film while it was shot and later again in a recordingtheatre with a different set of orchestra. The orchestra invari-ably was that of HMV, Columbia. ‘Twins’,or some such firmshad their own orchestra players and conductors, and the moviemusic composer only had a ‘watching brief’, as the lawyers say.

If one listensand watches the songs in the films of the 1940s.and later listens to the gramophone record, one will find thatthe orchestration is different between the twoand the style ofsinging varying considerably. For example, in the immortalsong ‘Manmadha leelaiyai vendrar undo…’ in the super hit‘Haridas’ (1944) Bhagavathar singing on the screen is totallydifferent from his singing for the gramophone recordand theorchestration, of course, is entirely different. Thus the back-ground score in the gramophone record is absent on the screen… an interesting example of the two systems prevailing duringthose days.

Ramanathan has gone on record that he scored the musicfor ‘Haridas’ though the credit titles do not carry his name inany capacity.

1944 witnessed G Ramanathan moving ahead as musiccomposer with the box office hit ‘Jagathalaprathapan’

Encouraged by the success of ‘Aryamala’ and ‘Sivakavi,’ K.S. Narayana Iyengar and S. M. Sriramulu Naidu launchedtheir next production under the Pakshiraja Films banner atCentral Studios, titled ‘Jagathalaprathapan.’

Popularly known as a ‘12 Ministers’ Tale’, the folk tale wasall about a prince (P. U. Chinnappa) who incurs the wrath ofhis father (P. B. Rangachari) when he expresses his heartfeltdesire to spend his life in the company of four angelic women,Indrani (M.S. Sarojini), Nagakumari (U. R. Jeevaratnam),Agnikumari (S. Varalakshmi), and Varunakumari (T. AJayalakshmi), princesses of Indraloka, Nagaloka, Agniloka, and Varunaloka respectively!

Sir, I am a regular reader of MambalamTimes and I thank you for highlighting regu-larly the various issues faced by the averagecitizen in the neighbourhood.

I want to bring to the kind attention of theauthorities a problem that is sprouting in T.Nagar for the past year or so. At several publicplaces like bus stops, share auto points andeven in residential places in T. Nagar andMambalam, transgender prostitutes solicitcustomers openly.

It causes a huge nuisance and embarrass-ment to the general public (especially women)and the residents living in and around the area. They start their work as early as 8 p.m whenthe public places are crowded with office goersreturning home after work. They also harasspedestrians, shop keepers and motorists anddemand money.

The transgender persons work in groups andthe cops most of the time turn a blind eye tothem. Some of the locations that thesetransgendered haunt include Nair Road (near

I request the au-thorities to look intothis matter and takesuitable action againstthese offenders. –Janani, T. Nagar

However, on July 27, 2010, Nagarajan hadto cancel the package as he could not get visasfor the tour.

The company refused to return the advancesaying it had spent the money for bookinghotels for the trip but it refused to show him anyproof of the booking.

Nagarajan then moved the District Con-sumer Disputes Redressal Forum, Chennai(North) in Jan. 2011 seeking return of theadvance along with compensation for deficiencyin service. The Forum after hearing the casepassed orders against Nagarajan in July 2011.

The same year, he filed an appeal in the StateConsumer Commission against the order.

The State Forum contended that accordingto the terms of the package, the operator canbook rooms only after the client obtains thevisa and confirms the dates of travel.

In its order, the State Forum said there wasnegligence anddeficiency in ser-vice on part of thecompany andordered it to re-turn the advanceof Rs. 90,000along with a com-pensation of7,000 for mentalagony and legalexpenses.
