Presidents Message

Dear Members of ATA, I would like to wish you and your family a Happy and Prosperous Ugadi. First I want to express my sincere gratitude to you all for giving me the opportunity to serve as the president of the American Telugu Association. As you are aware for the last two years ATA has gone through a difficult time in its 20 years history. As you know this was due to internal issues and disagreements within the board, legal cases, as well as financial concerns among other things. During this period the board was focused on resolving the above issues and was unable to fulfill all of the objectives of our organization.

In spite of all the problems ATA successfully completed the nomination and election process by the end of 2010. We want to thank you for your overwhelming participation and confidence in the process. On January 8, 2011 an ATA board meeting was held in Las Vegas. The new executive board members was elected, the standing committees and coordinators were appointed. The board also decided to hold its bi-annual conference in Atlanta, GA on the July 6-8, 2012. During the Las Vegas meeting, in addition to fulfilling the objectives of the ATA, the board decided to create the ATA Humanitarian Relief Fund to help the Telugu community members in emergency circumstances and to focus more on community service. Additionally, The Seniors Activities Committee was formed for the benefit of seniors as well as the Women's Forum to focus on women's issues. We decided to restart publishing the America Bharathi, resume ATA regional functions, cultural and charity programs and to improve the communication with the use of the internet. One of our priorities will be to focus on collecting the E- mail addresses from the members for more efficient communication.

I am pleased to inform you all that ATA activities were resumed in last few weeks, and ATA is in the Member

appreciation gatherings along with cultural programs were organized in different cities across the country, in addition to conducting other community service -

ently ATA has launched ATA E-news, and started updating the members on a regular basis. To this end, we

-mail addresses. On March 19, 2011 the second ATA board meeting was held in Atlanta and appointed the core committee for conducting the 12th ATA conference and youth convention in 2012. Board also has decided to conduct ATA Vedukalu in India during the month of December 2011.It is with great enthusiasm we are publishing this Magazine and able to communicate with you through America Bharathi after a lapse of two years. We will continue to publish on a regular basis. Finally I want to reassure all of our members that the ATA is as vibrant and strong as before and as committed as wetimes. Treasurer’s Report Submitted at Jan. 08, 2011 Board Meeting

Revenues:

During Jan 1, 2009 – Dec.31 2010, ATA has received $1,531.417 in total donations. Out of this, $1,408,620 for helping different projects in Andhra Pradesh. Most of these funds were for the development of schools, colleges, health centers, community centers and temple renovations in Andhra Pradesh. Other revenues included $53,137 for general donations, $3,500 for America Bharathi, $56,300 for membership dues, $2,800 for Nomination fees and $7060 for India account adjustment entry. No donations were received for canceled 2010 Houston Conference.

Cash:

ATA has cash balances of $ 74,361.88 in Operating account, $9,641.72 in Charitable Projects accounts, $50.26 in Conference account, and $3,273.20 in Trust Fund account. Total Current Assets are: $ 87,327.06. Expenses: During Jan 1, 2009 – August 31, 2010, total expenses were $2,925,392 Out of this, $1,050,000 was refunded to Dr. Prem Reddy’s foundation and $1,409,341 was distributed for projects in Andhra Pradesh.., Remaining expenses includes $64,742 withdrawn with court order by Landis, $22,774.01 withdrawn with court order by Bravos, $166,783 in legal expenses, $28,688 towards NY Conference pending bills, $3,060 for India account adjustment, $20,843 and $85,000 towards settlement with Houston Convention Center and Hilton Hotels respectively for cancelling the conference, $30,909 for ATA board meetings, $13,355 for America Bharathi & other printing, $7,500 for External Auditors fee, $10,412 for postage & shipping, and remaining balance of $11,982 towards office supplies, rents, telephone, office help expenses, etc. Received $ 37,744 in commissions from projects revenues and was credited under office expenses. Reconciliation of NY Conf- Andhra Bank Account in India On Dec 16, 2010, Dr. Chandra Reddy sent the reconciliation summary and details of donations received and expenses paid out from the Andhra Bank in India. Details are: Total revenues- INR5,536,612; Total Expenses- INR 5,382,385; Balance left- INR1,54,227. The account in India was closed in 2009 and Dr. Chandra Reddy sent the balance of $4,000 to ATA on Dec 16, 2010. In the year 2008, we have reported $119,500 as donations received with an offsetting equal amount as expense of $119,500. With the receipt of the final reconciliation summary, we have deposited the balance of $4,000 in Operating account as a final closing entry. Dear ATA Member, American Telugu Association (ATA) was founded in 1991 to perpetuate, preserve, and maintain the heritage of the people of Telugu origin, to assist people of Telugu origin in need and aid newly arrived Telugu's to settle in America, to organize periodic Telugu literary, educational, youth, and cultural conferences. In the year 2002, the Board of Trustees made a decision to have an ATA office in greater Chicago area. Recently, ATA board approved a plan to have an office building for American Telugu Association as a central place for ATA related activities, meetings and records To realize this goal, a new ATA Bhavan committee was established which developed the current plans. The ATA Bhavan committee with ATA board approval intends to complete the project with sponsorships and donations, without taking any loans. Plans have been developed and fund raising activities are in progress. The estimated cost is around $2 million. We are committed to raise the funds and start the project before the end of 2012. !1. First beggar: Some one gave me a Rs 100/- note yesterday. I went to Taj and ordered dinner worth Rs 1,000/-,

And enjoyed the dinner. When the bill came, I said, I had no money. The Taj manager called the policeman, and handed me over to him.

I gave the Rs 100/- note to the police fellow, and he set me free. A wonderful example of financial management indeed!

Anumolu Subba Rao receives Ellis Island Medal of Honour

WASHINGTON: Rao S Anumolu, an Indian-American from Long Island in New York, has been conferred with the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honour — the highest civilian award in the US for immigrants — for his contribution in the development of this country.Both the United States House of Representatives and Senate have officially recognized the Ellis Island Medals of Honour and the recipients are read into the Congressional Record. Among the past medalists include six US Presidents, as well as Nobel Prize winners and leaders of industry, education, the arts, sports and government. CEO of Long Island (New York)-based ASR International Corporation, Anumolu received the prestigious award on May 8, at a ceremony held at Ellis Island in the presence of several dignitaries.

The Medal recognizes recipients for outstanding contributions to their communities, their nation and the world. Vijayawada born Anumolu came to the US in 1969 and obtained a Masters degree in Industrial Engineering and also an MBA degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He has attended several Advanced Management Programs at Defence Systems Management College, Harvard University and Wharton School of Business Management. Recently he has graduated from the Owner/President Management Program (OPM) at Harvard Business School (HBS). In 2003, he was cited by the US Congress for the contributions made by him and ASR International Corporation towards homeland security in USA.

Telugu New Year Khara Nama SamvatsaramUgadi marks the advent of the Telugu New Year. The name of the festival derived from "Yuga Aadi" which means New Age. According to the Chandramana system (Shalivahana Shaka), Telugu New Year falls on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade. It is the first day of the Lunar calender. Like any other religion, Telugu New Year celebrations also has a legend behind it. Hindu mythology says Lord Brahma, created universe on Chaitra Shuddha Prathipade. Since then, this day is celebrated as a New Year’s day. Ugadi celebrations are also blessed with Vasanth Ruthu (spring). It symbolizes new life with blooming of fresh flowers, chanting of birds and fruit laden trees. It is considered an auspicious time to venture into new projects. Ugadi Celebrations People of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka begin New Year preparations a week before the festival. They clean their houses and surrounding areas whilst decorate it with mango leaves. Shopping for Ugadi gifts, new clothes and other items are done with a lot of fervor. Most of the people exchange gifts like silk saree, dhoti, pootarelullu and sweets like kaja, pala kova etc. On the Ugadi day, people get up early in the morning, apply coconut oil to their bodies, take a head bath and wear new clothes. Then they visit nearby temple to offer prayers to God, chant mantras and listen to Panchanga Sravanam. Priests or experts forecasts new events of the year and make people aware of the coming situations. Traditional Ugadi Food All the family members and friends sit together for the traditional sauce called Ugadi Pachchadi. It is a mixture of the following products:

¥ Neem leaves which is good for patients who have diabetes and skin diseases ¥ Jaggery increases haemoglobin level and sugarcane juice fights against jaundice. ¥ Raw mango and Tamarind juice are consumed with almost every dish prepared by women of Karnataka

and Andhra Pardesh.

Ugadi Pachchadi signifies that life is not a smooth journey. All sorrows, happiness, success and disappointment must be given due importance. All experiences have to be treated equally as it makes us learn something new every time and prepares us for the rest. It makes us develop positive attitude towards life. People also make some resolutions and pray to God for their well-being and prosperity.

Ugadi 2011 (Yugadi 2011) is the Telugu New year and Kannada New year. Ugadi 2011 date is April 4th 2011, Monday. Ugadi 2011 marks the beginning of Sri Khara nama Samvatsara in Hindu Panchangam. Ugadi or Yugadi means the beginning of an era. Hindus in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka celebrate their New Year as Ugadi whereas the people of Maharashtra celebrate it as Gudi Padwa. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Ugadhi day Ugadi Pachadi is prepared and distributed among the people. This festival is also celebrated as Cheti Chand or Sindhi New year.

The Saka calendar or Shaka Panchangam starts on Chaitra Shudda Padyami, which is known as Ugadi or Gudi Padwa. Sage Veda Vyasa described Ugadi day as the starting of Kaliyuga. It is believed that Kali Yuga began in the year 3102 BC.

Vasant Navratri or Chaitra Navaratri begins on Ugadi festival. Sri Ram Navami Navratras also start on Ugadi or Gudi Padwa. The ninth day after Ugadi, Ram Navami is celebrated. This day also marks the conclusion of Vasanta Navaratri Durga Puja.

Ugadi Pachchadi is the special recipe prepared on Ugadi day in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. This recipe signifies the combination of every aspect of life. Ugadi Panchanga Shravanam is done on Ugadi. Astrology predictions and yearly horoscopes are told by Brahmins on this day to common people.
