November 20, 2018 Additional Comments from Bishop Conlon

Following the November 2018 USCCB General Assembly The U.S. bishops’ assembly in Baltimore last week was quite unusual. Although we tended to some other business, including approving a pastoral letter against racism, the vast majority of the meeting was devoted to the current child abuse scandal wracking the Church. The big news was an announcement that Pope Francis had requested that we not move forward on a proposal to adopt provisions for dealing with complaints against bishops, either allegations of abuse itself or failure to address allegations against others. But on the first day we proceeded with three excellent presentations by lay people, some themselves victims of clerical abuse, within a context of prayer and reflection. On the second and third days, multiple hours were devoted to a very frank discussion about how to deal with complaints against bishops, even though we knew that no formal action could be taken. Sure, we were frustrated that no action could be taken. On the plus side, Pope Francis is calling together next February the presidents of all the episcopal conferences around the world to deal with the issue. Our president, Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, will certainly go to that meeting well-prepared with the sentiments of the U.S. bishops. Our discussion last week revealed that there may be more than one way to handle complaints against bishops. However, there appeared to be universal agreement that some provision needs to be made and that it needs to involve substantial lay engagement. The bishops also expressed strong feelings about getting to the bottom of the situation involving now-Archbishop Theodore McCarrick. This will require the involvement of the Holy See, although inquests are already underway in the four dioceses where McCarrick served as a priest and bishop. I truly believe that the adoption of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People sixteen years ago have put us on sound footing for providing safe environments for our youth and addressing allegations of abuse. The Diocese of Joliet has received a positive external audit report regarding the Charter every year since its implementation. I need to be very clear that no one, priests in particular, who has had a credible allegation of the sexual abuse of a minor brought against him or her is engaged in any official role in the Diocese of Joliet. I realize that recent media reports, especially concerning Theodore McCarrick and the Pennsylvania grand jury, may give the impression that the problem is ongoing. People understandably are angry or at least wary. Nothing can make up for the past. While we repeat our apologies to those who were harmed, their pain cannot be dissolved. We move forward with resolve to do our absolute best and rely on the mercy and strength of the Lord.

GIVING TREE All gifts need to be returned this weekend, December 9th. It is important that we receive your wrapped presents on these dates. If we do not get all the Christmas Gifts returned by the 9th, the St. Vincent DePaul Society will have to purchase the missing items. If you have any questions, please call Sheila at 630-833-6657 or e-mail her at [email protected].

CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE~THIS WEEKEND Our Christmas Food Drive will also take place the this weekend Dec. 8th & 9th. This food will be given to the same 32 families that we have adopted for the holidays. Items needed include canned fruit, soup, vegetables, prepared foods, peanut butter & jelly, pasta & spaghetti sauce, baking items, condiments, goodies, dish soap, laundry soap, personal soap, tooth paste, toilet tissue, paper towels, Kleenex and gift cards for Jewel, Marianos, and Aldi’s. We will be sorting the food on Monday evening, Dec. 10th at 7:00 pm. If you can donate an hour or so of your time to help us sort, we would really appreciate your help.

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today’s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.

WOMEN’S CHRIST RENEWS HIS PARISH (CRHP) WEEKEND – FEBRUARY 9-10, 2019 Are you so busy you often feel pulled in 10 different directions at the same time? Do you have little time for yourself with all the demands life places on you? Commit to taking time to put Jesus front and center in your life. When you make Jesus your priority He takes care of everything else. Take some time for yourself. Consider joining us for the next Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) weekend February 9-10, 2019. Can’t spend the night? No problem. Don’t let that stop you. For information contact

Karen Sutkus, Spiritual Director at [email protected] (630-935-1153) or

Mary Ann Reed, Lay Director, at [email protected] (630-606-1415).

THE EMPTY CHAIR~ MANAGING GRIEF DURING THE HOLIDAYS

This is the second installment of the six strategies for managing grief during the holidays.

#3) Build a support system. During December the holidays can magnify the sense of loss and loneliness. A support system doesn’t just appear; it has to be cultivated and populated with a handful of individuals who truly understand what it means to grieve. Frequently, this is not a family member. Identify those whom you know to be good comforters and spend time with them. Or, join a grief support group. Contact the bereavement minister in your parish to learn if there is an appropriate group available nearby.

#4) Ask for Help. Remind yourself of these two realities: First, you’re grieving and grieving is exhausting. Secondly, there are people in your life who want to be helpful. Try keeping a list of tasks you could use some assistance with and, next time your friends call and ask what they can do for you, look at your list and ask for help. For instance, just relieving yourself of the need to go to the Post Office to buy stamps can lift a weight off your shoulders. (Offered by Lifeline, the newsletter of Ahlgrim Funeral Home in Elmhurst.)

Holding you all in my heart and prayers, Mary Ann Reed, Bereavement Minister, 630-606-1415, [email protected]

Family Fun while Serving Others Our family service event

on November 24th was a great success. Mary Queen of Heaven families demonstrated a true spirit of service to others by volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. In total we packed over 200 cases of food for overseas children in need.

Marillac House Toy Drive and Heifer International Mary Queen of Heaven families can continue the spirit of service through our annual Marillac House Toy Drive. Sharing our Christmas joy with the families at Marillac House is a Mary Queen of Heaven tradition. Marillac House of Chicago is in need of new, unwrapped toys for their families this Christmas. Please send your donation for the Marillac House with your child to class or drop it off in the designated bin in Mary’s Gathering Space by December 14th.

Another Mary Queen of Heaven tradition is helping others through Heifer International. Heifer International is an organization that trains the poor to sustain their families with livestock. Families are encouraged to donate money to purchase an animal for a poor family to use to get out of the cycle of poverty. Please send your donation with your child to RE by December 19th. Thank you in advance for your generosity by helping us to carry out these traditions of love for one another.

Advent is here, we are doing all we can to get ready for Jesus. We are teaching the children that though they are small there are many things they can do for others. Jesus teaches us

to be kind and caring all the time. Our first task was to create a Christmas ornament for the Senior Dinner. The children counted the candy and put them in the ornaments. Then the MOMs ministry and children added ribbons

and tags. We are also very busy preparing for our “Road to Bethlehem” which is our Christmas show. It is Wed. Dec. 19th 9-9:30am in the church. Family, friends, and our parish family are invited to come to our show.
