Town & Gown Movie Night. Directed by Yasuzô Masumura • Screenplay by Ryôzô Kasahara, based on a nov- el by Yoriyoshi Arima • 95 min. • Japan • 1966 • Not Rated • In Japanese with English subtitles. Presented by James A. de Sève, Filmmaker-in-Residence, Union Col- lege. Yasuzo Masumura’s antiwar film, set in 1939 in the midst of the Second Sino-Japanese War, tells the story of young army nurse Sakura Nishi (Ayako Wakao) and her doomed relationship with Dr. Okabe (Shinsuke Ashida), a drug-addicted surgeon. A cross between Altman’s original M*A*S*H and Saving Private Ryan, the film provides great insight into Japanese culture during World War II. Unflinch- ing in its depiction of war—and those who participate in it—Red Angel is shocking and controversial even by today’s standards. Our Town & Gown series introduces moviegoers to film-savvy scholars from several colleges in our region whose work has been profoundly shaped by fine cinema, and invites them to present and discuss a film of their choice. This program has received funding from the Skid- more Office of Community Relations, and from the Sarato- ga Program for Arts Funding, administered by Saratoga Arts, and made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. What then follows is eight days of one harrowing adventure after another that includes storms, damaged navigational equipment, a dodgy raft, and, of course, sharks.
