TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKN. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM - 4

Vasanthakokilam played the role of Sage Naradar againin’Krishna Vijayam’ (1950) produced by Jupiter Pictures anddirected by the noted editor-director Sundar Rao Nadkarni.Besides Vasanthakokilam, it had P. V. Narasimha Bharathi,R. Balasubramaniam, C.V.V. Panthulu, Nott Annaji Rao,Trichur Premavathy, M.S.S. Bhagyamand Lalitha-Padmini(as dancers).

This movie had many songs some of which were writtenand composed by that immortal of film music PapanasamSivan. The music directors were S.M. Subbaiah Naidu andthe famed play-back singer Chidambaram S. Jayaraman (of‘Indru poi naalai vaaraay’ fame. The immortal melody is inraga Thilang.)

The musical talents and singing skills of Vasanthakokilamwere used to maximum advantage in this film. Her profi-ciency in classical Carnatic music surfaced and soaredskywards as never before in any of her films. She sang manysongs in many ragas.

A ragamaalika about the birth of Lord Krishna ‘Porumaikadalaagiya Bhoomadevi’ was sung in ragas Bilahari,Neelambari, Bhairavi, Sankarabharanam, Thodi,Panthuvaraali, Mohanam, Sree, AnandhabhairavandHamsnaadham, While NCV sings the events are shown onscreen using amazing trick photography. One shot had fivedifferent events in a single frame, a brilliant technical achieve-ment in the early1950’s when facilities were nowhere nearwhat they are today! The composer was Papanasam Sivanwhile S, M. Subbaiah Naidu handled the orchestration..

One melodious song was ‘Karunanidhey Madhavaa’(Hindustani Kapi, Papanasam Sivan and C. S. Jayaraman).Another ragamaalika by her was’Aayar manaiyiley maayanvalarndhu’ (Karaharapriya, Ataanaa, Harikambhodhi,Senjurutti, Behag, Sriranjani, Kadhanakuthoohalam,Kalyani, Vasantha and Surutti (Papanasam Sivan and C. S.Jayaraman)

Another song which became a big hit was ‘NavaneethaKannaney’ (Sindhubhairavi, K.P. Kamakshi and C.S.Jayaraman,)

‘Krishna Vijayam” was long in production and, when itcame out, the trends in Tamil Cinema were changing fastunder the sledge-hammer impact of films like ‘Velaikari’(1949) and the increasing influence of the Dravidianism-based politics and anti-god atheistic stance in Tamil cinema.Even though the film was well made with tuneful music it didnot do as well as expected.

After this film NCV did not act in movies and she made herway up and up in the classical Carnatic music world. Indeed, according to some music lovers and critics, she would haveexcelled MS but she did not have the backing and publicrelations push that MS had. Her Sathasivan was no match to‘Kalki’ Sathasivam, MS’s husband! Her health too sufferedand she fell a victim to tuberculosis. She also had problemswith Sachi who was married and ego clashes occurred oftenbetween them. According to her family membersVasanthakokilam was a very obstinate woman, not alwayseasy to get on .

She lived in a spacious bungalow on Eldam’s Road,Teynampet (where Sachi also lived!) and later she relocatedin Gopalapuram where she died in the early 1950s with TBtaking toll of her. She was only in her late forties. Very fondof flowers, she always wore loads of it in her hair!

With MS and D. K. Pattammal reigning supreme and withM . L. Vasanthakumari galloping fast to catch up with them,NCV was beginning to get sadly neglected. Even today whenevery Mary, Molly and Mohana release audio cassettes oftheir music with fanfare and media hype, it is not easy to findaudio cassettes of NCV’s music in shops. Many of her re-corded songs can, however, be downloaded free from theInternet.

Old-timers however remember her and her music andrecall those gone for ever days sixty-plus years ago when shewas almost at the top of the heap!

NO HOLDS BARRED

Killing fields‘Vivekananda Flyover’ in Kolkata that was

crawling into a semblance of a mighty publicgift by the government got sick and tired ofthe mighty thinkers of the city and, in a huff, came down in a squiggle killing 21 and injur-ing many more. This flyover was not a fin-ished marvel and perhaps needed moremonths or years to qualify as one that wouldserve many purposes imagined by the Stategovernment but, because of the fate of theinnocents near it, went awry.

This misadventure of the government addsto the Mamata government’s woes whichthe blood of the innocents would remind as arequiem. Mamata, already shaken by sev-eral pushes and pulls, would require to wearsteel-plated uniforms for protection from adhoc revellers who are out for the rulers’ blood.

This sad episode should be looked at on anational scale and the causative factor mustbe found so that this may not be cited as amanacle to progressive action by govern-ments where the public need for implemen-tation of people-centric dynamism is in peril.

Though a State subject, the upkeep ofroads and internal bridges should be underthe supervision of technically qualified offic-ers of the Central government or any similarbody qualified on that subject, whose ap-proval of any such scheme is the final wordin the feasibility of such mega projects. Thissuper body of experts should be like a superombudsman whose opinion should be final insuch schemes. In short, this touch-me-notpersonage must be for the nonce while hold-ing the file, like M.K. Gandhi or M.A.Sadanand, beyond external provocations ofmoney, politics and what is contemptuouslycalled ‘pelf’. Build bridges of understanding, before you build flyovers. There are manymillions of good people who can stop the rotin public usage of public money. Flyovers willnot collapse if honest men build them. Findthem.

Pavements encroached uponby vendors

Sir, What is the use of widening or laying newpavements when they are of no use to pedes-trians? It is a common sight since decades tosee pavements occupied by roadside vendors, eateries and commercial establishments. Ifnot, pavements are used for parking vehicles.Except for knee jerk action once in a while, theCorporation has failed to find a permanentsolution to the problem. Pedestrians can beseen walking on busy roads risking their liveswith encroached pavements alongside. B.Kannan, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare As-sociation, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar.

Year-old bus shelter awaitsinauguration

Sir, The modern bus shelter erected a yearago on Govindan Road (next to petrol outlet),West Mambalam is not being used.

Buses stop instead at Mettupalayam busshelter on Govindan Street which is in front ofa row of shops including a TASMAC shop.

The shelter is usually frequented by drunk-ards because of which women commuters usu-ally stay away for safety reasons. The newshelter, which has a roof and seats, is free ofcrowd or other encroachments, and offers bet-ter convenience and safety for commuters. Iappeal to MTC to put the new bus shelter toimmediate use for the benefit of commuters.Sivagami Narayanan, Govindan Road,West Mambalam.

By Our Staff ReporterThe low lying central median on the 20-ft wide Nandanam 1st

vehicles which could lead to accidents.2-wheeler riders could flounder and fall as the median is not clearly
