It was October 31, 1517, that Martin Luther nailed 95 theses on a door of the

Scholastic Church, Wittenberg, Germany, where he was a professor. These

theses were in response to Papal authority, the selling of salvation, and paying

for Masses on behalf of dead relatives.

Martin Luther planned on having the 95 Theses as an informal table talk dis-

cussion was students and faculty of the University. This led to a fire storm that

eventually started the whole protestant movement. Martin Luther’s main em-

phasis is salvation in Jesus Christ. It is Jesus death and resurrection that brings

pardon of sins, and the promise of eternal life. Salvation does not come from

financial contributions, good behavior, charitable works, or any type of social

status. Salvation comes solely as a free gift of God through our Lord Jesus

Christ. Jesus is the truth that sets us free.

The truth of Jesus Christ manifests itself in our lives by the power of the Holy

Spirit working through the Word of God. Hearing the preached Word, and re-

ceiving the Holy sacraments of baptism and communion are vital in living the

Christian life. Our human nature is tempted to think otherwise, as did the

church during his time. This is the very thing that Martin Lutheran addressed or

more strongly put, “Attacked!”

Life with God is offered to us freely. We receive this gift in faith. As we live in

relationship with God and his church, we continue to grow in our love of God,

and desire to be his people, making our faith active in love.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Jeff Pedersen

GATHER BIBLE STUDIES

The Apostles’ Creed

Session 2: I believe in Jesus Christ…

In Scripture, Jesus is called the Messiah, the Son of God, a teacher, a healer, the pioneer of our

faith, the rock of our salvation, Son of Man and other titles. In the Apostles’ Creed, Jesus’ life and

ministry is briefly summed up. Jesus is described as God’s only Son and our Lord—one who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit and born by the Virgin, who suffered under Pilate, who was crucified,

died and was buried. The creed is a definition of the work of the Father, Son and Spirit, yet there

is also fullness to being followers in the Way of Christ that is not described in the creed. How

does the creed encompass faithful living in imitation of Christ? In other words, what does it mean

to believe even more about Jesus and following Jesus than we say in the words of the creed?

Building Kits of Care With Hands & Hearts On A Mission

These women and many others collected, purchased, packed and prepared Care Kits for shipping to Lutheran World Relief. The 132 kits included Personal Care Kits, Fabric Kits, School Kits and Baby Care Kits. The kits will be sent to people dealing with some of life’s most difficult situations –the aftermath of earthquakes and floods, fleeing home to escape violence and living in extreme poverty.

Due to the Thrivent Financial sponsored Soap Drive in August, LCOP members were able to donate 100 bottles of laundry deter-gent for our Food Pantry.

There are four quilts made by the women’s sew-

ing group on display in the Narthex that are being

offered in a silent auction. Consider a donation to

purchase a quilt to keep you warm at home, with

the money going to keep us all warm at church.

The silent auction will continue through the month

of October.

On Sunday September 24th, the quilts

made by the women’s sewing group were

displayed in the sanctuary. 37 of the quilts

were packed and sent to Lutheran World

Relief. The rest of the quilts will be donated

to local missions. This year we will be able

to track the destination of the quilts and will

report where they were sent.

Please Help Our Partner, The Caribbean Synod, In the Wake of Hurricane Maria. The Caribbean Synod is one of our two Partner Synods and as you know they re-cently suffered great loss from Hurricane Maria. I spoke with a friend/pastor in Dora-do, Puerto Rico this morning. He and his family are fine. He said lack of utilities is widespread and will continue for some time. People from neighboring islands have come to PR as many of their islands suffered worse devastation than PR. Financial contributions are important. Make payable to SCSW-ELCA and put PUERTO RICO in the memo line. Thank you, Pastor Steve Kottke, Assistant to the Bishop. We are located at: 6401 Odana Road, Suite 20, Madison, WI 53719.

Some history for LCOP In 1910 Rev Lack put together the first history of the LCOP for the 65th anniversary and it was printed in the Platteville newspapers. He gathered up a lot of the early facts from the old church journals and facts as old timers remembered them and shared. As is with much of history, they were hard cold facts with not much personal commentary or observations and are mostly interesting to historians.

Feelings and observations, especially from kids, are so much more fun to find than the discovery of new cold hard history facts. Being one to never drive by a little lemonade stand without stopping and getting a glass, this little tidbit recorded in the old LCOP Journal of Minutes for the Luther League meetings after a summer picnic made me smile, and still does. It was noted at the picnic that…

“The girls really liked the lemonade, for it was so sweet”.

Also interesting are the candid reflections from Rev Lack’s oldest daughter Renata about her life as a child in Platteville. They were written 31 years ago when she was 86 years old in her “Life Story”. Reflections as only a “PK” daughter’s observation and memory can tell on Platteville life as she saw it from age eight to sixteen. She wrote….

In 1908 when I was eight years old my father received a call to Peace Lutheran Church in Platteville, Wisconsin. On the way to Platteville we went to Minneapolis to visit our many relatives. Both my mother and father's relatives had come from Denmark to live in Minneapolis and some lived in Hopkins and St. Paul, MN. One of my aunts baked pancakes for our breakfast; her son Carl would grab them onto his plate as fast as she baked them. I guess he wasn't used to sharing with so many cousins; he really was one of my favorite cousins and very good to his parents when they were older.

We moved into a nice big house. It had five bedrooms and a study for my parents, a living room and parlor, a small bedroom and a formal dining room big enough to set extra guests as the folks always were inviting someone to eat with us. We always ate in the dining room. Mother always had pure linen tablecloths and napkins; we each had a beautiful silver napkin ring and had to roll our napkins up to put in the ring until the next meal. The kitchen was big enough to work in and had a pantry. Upstairs were four bedrooms and my father's study. We always had devotion before and after each meal.

We had a large living room and a parlor. The parlor was only used for weddings and special company. My sisters and I could stand in the doorway and watch while couples were being married. One wedding I never forgot. There was a Boarding House where people from other countries would stay until they got situated. One couple who came had their license to get married and were from different countries. They couldn't speak each other's language but they knew about getting married. After the ceremony was over, the man reached in his pocket and took out a bill to give to my father the lady pushed on his arm and shook her head so he put that bill back in his pocket and took out a smaller bill; that was too much also, so the third bill he had she shook her head yes, that was O.K. My father laughed about this many times. My father always had a good sense of humor.

Also babies were christened at home, usually on Sunday afternoon. As I loved children I would go along to see the christening, and of course there was cake and food after the ceremony was over.

I took care of children in the neighborhood as I loved to do this. When I was twelve or thirteen I was hired to take care of them for pay. I think I got $2.00 a week in the summer when I took care of them full time. I didn't get to keep any of the money; I had to give it to my father so my folks could buy what we very much needed. We always had plenty to eat and nice clothes to wear. Every Easter and Christmas, mother would have a dress maker make nice dresses for us. I could go to the store and pick out the material I liked and as I grew older, I could also pick out the pattern for my dress. Mother did not sew on the sewing machine. She knitted all of our mittens and stockings. I didn't care to learn how to knit, but on my own I started making a few clothes for myself. Mother would buy material and patterns for me to get started.
