Dear Parents,
We have been learning about matter, heat transfer, and conductors andinsulators during our science instruction. As a fun culmination to our unit,
students will be involved in creating their own lunch boxes. They will be
creating a lunchbox with a partner. The purpose of this activity is to actively
involve students in real-world application of their learning.
We will be doing the research for this project in class, and the students will
have some class time to work on their projects. They may need to work on
some of their project at home. Please keep in mind that this project needs to
be student created. I will have some materials available in class, but my supplies
are limited. Most groups will need to bring some materials from home to finish
their ideas.
The project will last for two weeks and follow the following timeline:
1. Students will have one week to research information for their project
2. Student will have one week to construct their project
3. The project are due on _________________
The guidelines for this project are as follows:
Groups may use any material(s). Materials should be chosen which help
insulate the lunchbox.
Groups must have a plan/design and material list before they begin creating
their lunchbox.
The lunchbox must be able to hold one 9 oz. cup of juice.
The lunchbox must close and be able to be carried.
The lunchbox must be decorated in some fashion.
Goal: To keep a cup of juice coolest the longest- we will use a thermometer
to mark the temperature change over 5 minutes.
Other than these guidelines students are open to make the lunchboxes however
they choose. I hope groups will use their imaginations and strive to apply the
concepts we have learned in class. I look forward to seeing the final lunchbox
projects! If you have any questions, dont hesitate to call me or send me an e-mail.
Thanks!

Dear Lunchbox Supply Inventors,
We are looking for a new design for our lunchbox line for the upcoming school year. We are looking
for a fashionable lunchbox that keeps food cold for a long period of time. We would like you topartner up with another Lunchbox Supply Inventor to create a new design. You will have two weeks
to complete this project. You will need to spend the first week researching your information, and the
second week designing and constructing your lunchbox. We would like the projects and
presentations to be completed by ___________________. We will test your design the day your
projects are due.
Here are the project guidelines:
Groups may use any material(s). Materials should be chosen which help
insulate the lunchbox.
Groups must have a plan/design and material list before they begin creating their lunchbox.
The lunchbox must be able to hold one 9 oz. cup of juice. The lunchbox must close and be able to be carried.
The lunchbox must be decorated in some fashion.
You must include a written report about the materials you chose for your lunchbox and list the
reasons why you chose those materials.
Goal: To keep a cup of juice coolest the longest- we will use a thermometer to mark the
temperature change over 5 minute intervals.
The following links will help aid you in your research:

On the day of your presentation, you will need to turn in:
A written report about the materials you chose for your lunchbox and list the reasons why you
chose those materials.
Your final lunchbox ready to be tested.
Be ready to present your information and final project to the board and other inventors.
We look forward to seeing your product designs!
Happy Inventing!

Note to the TeacherNote to the TeacherNote to the TeacherNote to the Teacher
Thank you for your purchase! I hope that you enjoy using this project in your
classroom! I use this project after I teach my unit on heat and changes in matter.
During this unit we go over conductors and insulators. This project is a greatextension activity and gets students to think about how the skills they learned in
class can apply to the real world.
Two weeks before I start this project I put the following insert into my weekly
newsletter/classroom website. I do this so parents can start saving insulators for the
project. You could even ask local grocery stores, or packing stores to donate items to
help with the project.
Dear Parents,
On the week the 18th we will begin our in class lunchbox project.
This project will be used as a culminating activity for our science
unit on heat and changes in matter. This project will also review
our measurement and research skills. The students will asked to
design and create a lunchbox that will keep a nine ounce cup of juice
cold. They will need to bring in supplies (insulators) for this project from
home. I will supply basic supplies like glue, construction paper, tape,
markers, etc. I just wanted to give you a heads up so you could startsaving different supplies.
Thanks!
When I introduce this project to my students I have them sit down and I lead them
through a mock business meeting. I have them pretend that they are inventors for
the Lunchbox Supply Company. I give them the project letter, and discuss the time
frame and project guidelines with them. I then assign them a partner for the project.
I have had students select their own partners in the past, but I want them toexperience what the working force is like so now I assign partners.
After introducing the project I give project teams time to start brainstorming their
project ideas. During this time, I give each group a piece of chart paper and box of
markers to record their ideas on.

Note to the TeacherNote to the TeacherNote to the TeacherNote to the Teacher
During the first week of the project I give my project teams time to research, and
work on their design copy. I have them use the links I provided in the project letter to
help them get started with their research. They need to complete their written
report during this time.
During the second week of the project I have my students work on constructing their
final project design. They need to be ready to test their final project on the date
their projects are due. When we test their projects I give each project team a
thermometer, Lunchbox Testing Data Sheet, and a nine ounce juice cup to put in
their lunchbox. I then have the students find their starting temperature for their
juice. Next, I set a timer, and have the students check their juice temperatures at 5
minute intervals. During this time they will record the temperature and change in
temperature on their recording sheet. When we have finished testing, the studentsfill in the reflection part of their Lunchbox Data Recording Sheet.
Once we have finished testing, I have my project teams share their projects, and data
from the Lunchbox Data Recording Sheet. While each team presents, I record their
results of a piece of chart paper. We collectively look over each teams results and
decide which model should be the new lunchbox design for the upcoming school
year.
Thank you again for your purchase! If you like this project, follow me onTeachersPayTeachers to get updates of my new products! Ill be adding more files
soon. I hope you enjoy using this project in your classroom!
Happy teaching!
