Welcome to our new programme of arts and events.

Art classesLU Arts organises hugely popular classes

in Painting & Drawing and Pottery. Unfortunately these have all sold out for this

term, but e-mail us if you want to receive information about next year’s courses:

[email protected].

LU ARTS

We have a busy start to 2015, with a wide variety of activities that I hope will help see you through those dark winter nights into Spring.

Some high calibre music is coming your way, mixing some of the most exciting new talents, in the form of Laura van der Heijden and Lisa Knapp, with some more established names like the Endellion String Quartet and Martin Simpson.

If you’re looking for further intellectual nourishment, then do have a look at our free talks programme. Each of the talks links to a specific research field within Loughborough University and we are very much looking forward to hearing the thoughts and ideas of Alice Rawsthorn (design) and Fred Pearce (environmental studies).

There are also some projects in development, such as the next Radar programme ‘Market Town’, which I am very excited about. We have invited a mix of architects, artists and designers to come to Loughborough to develop projects that re-imagine the future of the town centre, with a focus on developing ideas in partnership with the local community. We’re also working on a week-long celebration of all the various creative activities that students are involved in, ranging from drama to dance and singing to Shakespeare. Please do keep looking at our website for more details on both.

With such a varied programme, I hope there is something for all artistic tastes, and look forward to seeing you at some of the events.

In 2012, at the young age of 15, Laura van der Heijden won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award. Tonight she will be joined by Tom Poster, who is internationally recognised as a pianist of outstanding artistry and versatility, equally in demand as soloist and chamber musician. Tom won many awards, amongst which the First Prize at the Scottish International Piano Competition 2007, and has just released his first solo album ‘In Song and Dance’ which has already received many positive reviews.

The Endellion String Quartet have recently celebrated their 35th anniversary, enchanting concertgoers all around the world with their music. According to Gramophone magazine, their years of performing have given them ‘a uniformity of thought and instinct that allows them to play as a single entity’. Since 1992 they have been the Residency orchestra at the University of Cambridge. For this performance, they will be playing a selection of pieces from their well-acclaimed set of the Beethoven’s String quartets, which was released to celebrate the University of Cambridge’s eight hundredth anniversary.

Lisa Knapp & band

Wednesday 25 March 7:30pmMartin Hall Theatre£10/£8 conc./£5 students

Although her music would probably be classified as folk, Lisa Knapp’s sound encompasses much, much more. She grew up from a diverse musical background, which laid the groundwork for her unique and eclectic sound. Her debut album, ‘Wild and Undaunted’, was a huge success and now she’s back with a new album ‘Hidden

Seam’. Her second album is proving to be just as successful, receiving rave reviews worldwide and earning the title of Best Original Song in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014 for ‘Two Ravens’. Lisa is known for her impassioned performances, so this concert will surely be one not to be missed!

In 2013, the Escher String Quartet became one of the very few chamber ensembles to be awarded the prestigious Avery Fischer Career Grant and according to the Guardian, they are ‘clearly one of the finest quartets of their generation’. Obviously, we are very proud that they will be performing in Loughborough this Spring! In their concert they will take us on a musical travel through time. The quartet will be performing a romantic piece by Schubert (which he wrote at the young age of 16), an intimate and mysterious work from the 1900’s by Sibelius and a more modern part (1925) by a Schönberg-inspired Berg. A diverse programme that will show the great virtuosity of the musicians and will show why the name Escher fits this ensemble so well; just like Escher’s art this quartet consist of individual parts that come together to form a magical and enchanting whole.

performer! For this concert he is joined by Andy Cutting and Nancy Kerr. Nancy has been performing ever since she was a teenager and always has been a distinctive and impressive talent, turning heads everywhere she’s played. Andy Cutting is a soulful and technically outstanding melodeon practitioner with an ear for a fine tune. Martin Simpson has often said that playing music with likes of Andy and Nancy makes him a better player. In this trio he will be mainly playing guitars and banjos, singing and grinning from ear to ear. We’re looking forward to seeing that grin!

LU Arts and Flix Present: National Theatre LIVE

MARKET TOWN Radar has invited seven internationally recognised artists, architects and designers to come to Loughborough for our new project Market Town. In partnership with the local community they will develop projects that support the future prosperity of the town centre. Taking the government commissioned Portas Review from 2011 as a starting point, the creative professionals will investigate how they can develop work that reimagines the town as a destination for ‘socialising, culture, health, wellbeing, creativity and learning’ (Portas Review), whilst seeking new ways to rethink and activate local economies. Alongside the artistic outputs we will take over a shop space in the town and programme talks, workshops and exhibitions that further add to the debate about what the future high street should look like.
