MULTI-DISCIPLINARY CLASS: Greek Theatre & Mask Making

This class for youth and teens explores the use of masks in theater. They will start by studying the masks of the Greek chorus as a representation of “everyman” or the collective consciousness. In this 6-week class, students will create a traditional mask with visual artist Abhilasha Natarajan, and work on a performance piece based on the ancient Greek play Antigone for a concluding recital. The class will be split into two groups by age.

Music Together

Music Together recognizes that all children are musical, and that every child needs a stimulating, supportive music environment to achieve basic competence in the wonderful human capacity of music making. Adults and children come together for 45 minutes each week to sing songs, experience rhythm chants, dance and move to music, play instruments, make up silly rhymes for songs and experience a wide range of rhythmic and melodic musical variety. All of this live music making takes place in a fun, playful, non-performance oriented and age-appropriate setting, with adults and teacher acting as encouraging role models. Classes are led by a registered Music Together teacher. Class meets once a week for 10 weeks.

Instructor: Jody HarcourtLocation: Dance StudioNote: A non-refundable materials fee of $40 will be charged in addition to the registration fee. It includes two professionally recorded CDs, a beautifully illustrated songbook and a parent guide to help you get the most out of this internationally-acclaimed, research- based program. Sibling discount and payment plan available for Music Together; please ask Arts Education staff.

musicmusic Music Together Guitar Class for Grown-Ups

These classes are open to parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children registered in our Winter/Spring 2013 semester, which features the DRUM & TAMBOURINE collection. If you would like to learn to play guitar using Music Together songs as the vehicle, this is the class for you! Participants will learn basic strums and chords for more than a dozen songs from the current Music Together song collection. This class is good for beginners who have never even held a guitar, as well as for those who know a little guitar or who already play some Music Together songs! All participants build technique and musicianship in an organic, relaxed way while learning new ways to explore Music Together songs with their child at home and on the road. A (not-so) side benefit of the class is that it’s an enjoyable night out with other parents of small children—without children! Our 1-hour classes are scheduled for 8 consecutive weeks in winter and spring.

Instructor: Jody HarcourtLocation: Musco Music RoomNote: Students will need to bring a playable guitar, a capo, and a guitar tuner. NO CLASS ON 2/18.

Intro toCuban-style Salsa Dance Salsa dance, like food, is different in different places. Cuban-style Salsa (sometimes called “Casino” ), is distinguished from other Salsa styles from LA, New York, Colombia, and other places by being more circular and less linear. Cuban-style Salsa is very dynamic, never static; the partners are always circling around each other. In this class we’ll start from the basics, covering the fundamental rhythm of the dance (1,2,3), the basic step (“Guapea”), fundamental turns (“Enchufla”), and the all-important cross body lead (“Dile que no”).

Instructor: Ryan Mead, Rueda con Ritmo Location: Dance StudioNote: No prior salsa experience., special shoes, or partner is necessary. Can be taken with Intro to Rueda for a discount.

dance

Intro to Rueda (Cuban-style Salsa in a circle) Rueda, meaning “wheel,” is a way of dancing Cuban-style salsa in a group, with a circle of couples. A bit like American Square Dancing, the Rueda is led by a cantante (or “caller”), who directs the dancers to perform the same movements together, frequently changing partners. In this class you’ll apply the Cuban-style Salsa skills you learned in the previous class to dancing in the Rueda with a full group. We’ll cover fundamental calls and steps such as “Pásala con las manos” (Pass your partner with your hands), “Dame Una” (Give me a new partner), “Adios” (Goodbye), and more.

Instructor: Ryan Mead, Rueda con Ritmo Location: Dance StudioNote: Prerequisite: Intro to Cuban-style Salsa (taught earlier in the same day). No special shoes or partner is necessary. Can be taken with Intro to Cuban-Style Salsa Dancing for a discount.
