It is a festivity with an ancient originwhich combines magic rituals withfire, gunpowder, water and music. Alldesigned to welcome the Summer.

The festivities program has a richvariety of events which includesports activities, street parades, musical performances, concerts, flower offerings, and much more. There are events for all ages andtastes, the running of the bulls andthe “correfocs” (firecrackers parade)as well as the huge traditional fire-works display called the “Nit delsFocs”. The festivities conclude on thenight of the 24th with the burning ofthe "Hoguera" monument and aspectacular music and fireworks dis-play.

FIESTAS IN JAVEA "Fogueres deSant Joan" - Festival of San Juancontinues all this week until 24 June, this popular fiesta enjoys the maxi-mum participation from the town’sinhabitants who belong to neighbour-hood associations called “peñas”and they all fill the streets to partici-pate in all of the traditions.

The "Hogueras” make playful refer-ence to current events in the townwhich pay homage to the ancestral

t r a d i t i o nw h i c hi n v o l v e dburning oldjunk on the23rd of Junewith themagical goalof purifyingthe body andsoul prior tothe SummerSolstice.

“Els focs de Sant Joan” (St. John’sFires) which decorate the town’sroundabouts are small bonfires overwhich the citizens jump one by one, decorated with garlands and flower

decorations which areburned once the last fireshave been jumped. Finallyon the 24th of June, the mon-uments are burned incelebration of St.John's holiday to con-clude the festivities.

La Cala Bay near toBenidorm also hosts anannual event for SantJoan attracting thou-sands of residents and

tourists who dine on the beach in theCove in the shortest night of the year.Councillor Indalecio Rodríguez said“all preparations are already readyand as in previous years, the CityCouncil will offer a free bus service toresidents in the urban area ofFinestrat so the people from the res-idential areas can also enjoy thismagical holiday. The party is a tradi-tion, where families will dine at the

beach and this year, unlike others, the City Council will be responsiblefor distributing wood to make thebonfires.

The Councillor explained “the reasonis for preventing pallets beingbrought to the beach and then nailsare lost in the sand, the beach mustbe perfectly clean the next day andall debris cleared to avoid anychance of any beach bathers gettinghurt. As a novelty this year also someflags in the bonfires be placed tomark them so then all the ash will beremoved and avoid possible burns.

The free bus service leaves theFonteta at 20:00 and 21:00 hours, soapproximately fifteen minutes laterbuses collect the residents of thedevelopments. The music will beginto start the evening at 22:00. TheDepartment of Fiestas has hired anorchestra that will be play until mid-night, then the fireworks will start and

the bravest will bathe in the sea andmake a wish.

Other entertainment includes a showof aerial acrobats and puppets withlive music until dawn. The mayorsaid that "I take this opportunity toinvite all of our neighbours in theregion to participate in this night ofSan Juan where there is fire, musicand entertainment".

DEAD SHARK SHOCKS SWIMMERSLast Sunday, theappearance of a deadshark on a beach inDenia surprised thefirst swimmers lastSunday morning.

The shark found was ablue shark, a very com-mon species in theMediterranean, whoseadult specimens canoften reach an averagelength of 2.5 meters andweighs around 80 kilos.

The emergenceof dead bluesharks on beach-es is not anu n c o m m o noccurance.

Just like othermarine life suchas dolphins, bluesharks tend totowards theshore to die. It isthe mysteriousphenomenon of

the so-called 'suicide' ofthis type of animals, which is especially fre-quent at this time of year, which is the time whenthey travel the Spanishcoast.

Sometimes, the death ofsharks and dolphins isdue to the fact that theyare stranded whileapproaching the shore insearch offood.

BRITISH CONSUL PRAISESCHARITIES' WORK

Local expat charities are working hard to supportboth British and Spanish nationals, British ConsulSarah-Jane Morris saw in a day-long visit to the northof Alicante province this week.

Mrs Morris spent a morning inthe HELP centres in La Xara, and was impressed to see thework that the charity is doing todeliver respite and residentialcare for those in need.

In addition to the work that theydo to help British citizens,HELP Marina Alta and othercharities also fundraise for theirlocal communities so that allnationalities can benefit.Recently, for example, HELPpurchased hospital beds for local GP surgeries and pro-vided funds to Fontilles care home.

Mrs Morris said: "The work that these charities carry outis really fantastic. Not only are HELP Marina Alta support-ing British nationals who need help, they are also

fundraising for Spanish charities, such as the Fontillescare home. This is partnership in action – Brits support-ing each other and also giving something back to thelocal Spanish community."

She added: "As always, all thelocal charities are crying out forvolunteers, so I would reallyencourage anyone who hassome spare time to getinvolved. It can be incrediblyrewarding work to help others."

The Consul spent the rest ofthe day in the north of Alicantecarrying out two focus groups,in Javea and Moraira. Britonsattending the groups askedMrs Morris to provide clearer

and more up-to-date information on official websites. Sheencouraged British residents to follow the Consulate onFacebook (www.facebook/BritsLivingInSpain) and to lookat www.gov.uk/living-in-spain when they have a questionabout common issues such as driving licences, residen-cy and the padrón.

WHALES SPOTTED IN DENIAWhales never fail us. Each yeararound these dates they are seenaround the cape ofSant Antoni (Cabo deSant Antoni), headingSouth. They come fromthe Ligurian Sea.

Last Friday, the crew of aship that sailed thewaters of Denia sightedtwo whales headingsouth towards the coastof Les Rotes. Fin whales are the sec-ond-largest species of whale, with amaximum length of about 75 feet(22m) in the Northern Hemisphere, and 85 feet (26m) in the SouthernHemisphere. Fin whales show mildsexual "dimorphism", with femalesmeasuring longer than males by5-10%.

The Coast Guard of the City of Denia

and the Generalitat Valenciana, which was 500 meters away from its

p o s i t i o n ,sighted thetwo copies,discoveringa n o t h e rcouple atless thanhalf a milefrom theprev ious .They came

surprisingly close to the cape of SantAntoni. Normally, these cetaceansswim at 20 and 30miles from shore. For this reason, astudy is beingcarried out formore than sevenyears, to find outwhy they

approach the coasts of Denia in theirreturn path from the Ligurian Sea tothe south. It has been verified thatthe whales approach between 200and 1,000 meters from the coast ofDenia until they reach the Cabo deSant Antoni, the place where theychange course and turn aroundquickly to be separated from thecoast.

Year after year, the sightings ofwhales are more common, not onlyfrom boats, but also from the coast. It

is more common tofind people whohave been able toenjoy the wonder-ful and excitingfeeling to contem-plate those giantsof the seas, thatcan reach 24meters in length.

HASHISH FOUNDBY SWIMMER

A foreign resident ofDenia who likes to takea dip on the beach ofLes Marines everymorning, yesterdayencountered a squarefloating object.

He brought it to the shoreand found it suspicious. But, instead of notifyingthe Local Police, he tookthe bale, which weighedabout 30 kilos, anddropped it of personally atthe police station.

When he handed it overto the agents, it was stillwet, which is a reason to

believe that it had beendrifting in the sea for along time. The police cutit open with a knife andfound it was a bale ofhashish. The drug waspacked. The plastic thatcovered the bale evencontained sea snails andsea algae. The localpolice gave the bale tothe national police, who isnow investigatingwhether it originates fromsome intercepted boat orsome drug trafficker’sattempt to dump theircargo. In the area of thefinding, no more floatingbales have been found.

NATURAL PARK CLEAN UPThe last day of the 15thEnvironmental Day organized bythe Yacht Club of Altea gaveencouraging results.

Two teams of 50 volunteers weresplit up to carry out the cleaning workacross the natural park and in thewaters that surround it. The majorityof volunteers made up the main

clean up group whichsearched the natural park areafor waste and foreign objectswhile a smaller remainder ofthe volunteers put on divinggear to search the sea water inthe area.

According to the club, themajority of the waste and rub-bish was found on land, and com-prised of "large amount of bottles, plastics, metal and remains of household furniture”.

The club also clarified that "this high-lights the lack of awareness".Among these remains, even a liferaft and the structure of an electrictoy car of large dimensions werefound. They stressed that the resultsalso showed that the seafloor was

cleaner, because during this searchthey only collected two small bagswith plastic rubbish, some bottlesand some fishing line, as a result ofrecent storms, explained the club.

The day ended with a snorkel routeled by a professional diver for 25 chil-dren, who were taught to identify thespecies in the area and taught abiutthe waste that accumulates in thesea.

HARLEY BIKERS DAYThe annual HarleyDavidson Fun Daytook place in Albir lastSunday – with arecord turnout. TheEucalyptus Park wastransformed into abikers haven – witharound 600 HarleyDavidsons parked up,an incredible site. Each was gleaming and in pristine condition – withsome costing the same price as a house, hardly sur-prising!

The Mayor – Vicente Arques came to admire themachines before they set off on a tour, escorted by 50police outriders. You could hear them long before youactually saw them as they made their way through Albirand headed towards Benidorm, roaring along theLevante promenade to the surprise of sunbathing holi-daymakers on the beach. Riding pillion were 19 ´BikerBabes´ who had fundraised for the privilege – a sum of€100 was asked but between them they managed to

raise an incredible €13,000, which was donatedto the Emaus ´Make a Smile´ charity. PeterEmmett of the Costa Blanca España chapterorganized the event and handed over a chequeto a delighted and tearful Lucy and Tony Grandeon behalf of the charity. The Harley Bikers havemade a number of donations to ´Make a Smile´ -which endeavors to turn the Relleu home into a

self sufficiency pro-gramme to helpsustain otherEmaus homes with-in the CostaBlanca.

Thousands camethroughout theafternoon to admireand photograph the

bikes, browse the stalls selling biker merchandise thenchill and enjoy the sound of the live rock band with a canof beer in hand – a perfect end to the weekend. The dateof next years fun day has yet to be confirmed by PeterEmmett said that it will definitely be in June.

clean Up reSUMeSFive months have passed since it was put on thetable the possibility that the public company tragsa, would continue the workto remove the stagnantwater from the alteacoastline following thebankruptcy of the compa-ny 'cyes', who left thework unfinished a yearago.

This week, Tragsa havetaken over the works thatwill end the problem ofodors and stagnant water inthis area of the coastline.

'Cyes' began work to renovate the stagnant "lagoon" inAltea but paralyzed just a year ago when it entered bank-ruptcy, leaving the area mostly drained but still unfinished

with dirt and muck in the center and was left until now.The stoppage casued the lagoon to accumulate water

again which turned stagnantbringing an awful odor toresidents and visitors. Thetown hall tried to gain per-mission to open a way forwater flow in and out toimprove the situation butfailed.

The work will try to be fin-ished as soon as possibleeven though the summerseason is upon us. Whencompleted the new localgovernment will be held

responsible for the upkeep and next phases to improveand complete the physical appearance of Alteas’ coast-line.

teMporaryBeacH Service?

the summer season has already started, kids are fin-ishing school and tourists are beginning to arrive yetaltea is still unsure who will be looking after thebeach service which provides sunbeds and parasols.

The City Council convened in mid-May and started aprocess to find a new company to provide and maintainthe service. So far no company has been found, whichhas led to another meeting with the new town govern-ment, they are looking to award a 3 year contract for thecompany who takes on the service with the possibility ofan extra year.

The town council withdrew the license to, Rojuser, whowere awarded the contract last year but failed to pay feesmore than 45,000 euros.

It has now been said that if Rojuser pay "immediately"they will allow to restart renting hammocks and parasolson a temporary basis.

Spain was one of the topcountries in Europe for theamount of money thatmigrant workers sent backhome in remittances, according to a report pub-lished on Monday by theInternational Fund for

BENIDORM’S NUMBER ONE FAN

A NIGHT OUT AT ST JAMES TAVERN

It has to be said that Jason Greenfrom Wellingborough inHertfordshire can most probablytake the title of number one fan ofthe hit ITV comedy series´Benidorm´.

He has already been out three timesthis year to catch a glimpse of thefilming and even bought his veryunderstanding wife Mandy here fortheir tenth wedding anniversary backin April. But what makes Jasonstand out from the crowd is his homage byway of body art. Not content with hisfirst tattoo, a small one on his arm ofthe Benidorm logo and main cast sig-natures, his entire back is now allthings Benidorm!

The Sol Pelicanos pool, Morgans

Tavern, theP i n kHouse andS o l a n alogo, inaddition toloca t ionsused forfilming. Hehas spentthousandshaving thea r t w o r kdone and

estimates that it will take aboutanother 40 hours to finish! On hisreturn he will have the pool finishedoff – with sun loungers, swimmersand palm trees around the edge, thelong legged Aqualandia bike mancoloured silver and then another oneon his right shoulder – possiblyBenidorm Palace, which was usedfor the Christmas special.

He will then have signatures of theremaining cast and crew membersinscribed on his side. Jason loveseverything about the series and hasmanaged to speak to Derren andseveral of the cast members on anumber of occasions outside shotlocations. Back home he has evenrecreated a ´Bar Solana´ in his gar-den shed, although not had manyopportunities to use it yet.

On one trip last year he was unableto get a direct flight, so flew fromStansted to Bilbao then ontoBarcelona and finally to Alicante –and was only here for two nights!

Understandably he runs his ownbusiness so is able to reorganize hiswork calendar in order to fulfill hispassion. I feel sure that we´ll seeJason back here again in the not toodistant future.

A night out in Benidorm could notbe missed, especially when theinvitation was to join Brett andLoraine at the St James Tavern inCalle Finestrat, just up from theCalle Gerona at the Old TownEnd.

Brett and Loraine are new owners ofthe St James Tavern, I say new, butreally I only say this because theprevious owners had been knownby visitors to the town for over tenyears, so in comparison Brett andLoraine are new, but have nowenjoyed their first year getting toknow the returning guests and manylocals as well. Benidorm being aplace for all sorts of holiday makersand party goers and famous forbeing a non-stop location for liveentertainment seemed to fit in withthe new owners plans.

A nice friendly pub with great homecooked traditional food, but that's notall that's on offer. St James Tavern

also offers a unique side of entertain-ment, with a weekly Friday NightExtravaganza with "Dusty Crack" acomedy drag show that takes yourbreath away..... Literally in somepeople's eyes.

The show starts at 10pm so there isplenty of time for food and drinksfirst. The cocktails seemed to be verypopular with the girls sipping awayon Sex on the Beach. For me it wasa nice cool beer and the rack of ribs.

My partner who chose thesteak with pepper sauce, so wedecided to share the food sothat we could get a taste ofeach other’s. The baby rack ofribs filled the plate and themeat was falling off the bone.Served with BBQ sauce on theside the ribs were sweet andtangy and the extra sauce wasideal for dipping the homemadechips and onion rings.

The fillet steak was tender andmoist served with pea’s, cherry

tomatoes and chips. This really wasan ideal Friday night supper that weboth really enjoyed. The girls sittingnext to us were also enjoying asnack with their drinks in preparationof a long night ahead. Chip butties,Chicken Nuggets a selection of greatfinger food that accompanied thecool cocktails.

In anticipation of what was to comewith a name such as "Dusty Crack" it

all made sense as theshow got underway. Thecostume changing andenergetic dancing wasnon-stop and really got thecrowd going, including a lit-tle bit of audience partici-pation. I was just glad it

wasn't me who got pickedout... Go along to meetBrett and Loraine servingfood all day includingbreakfast, also from thisweek they will be hosting aNorthern Soul night everySaturday.

NEW MAYOR FORBENIDORM

Toni Pérez of the Partido Popular (PP)party was inaugurated as the newMayor of Benidorm on Saturday, oust-ing Agustin Navarro of the PSOE.

The swearing in ceremony took place inthe Council Chambers at the Town Hall infront of invited guests and press. Twolarge screens –one in the audito-rium and anotherin the foyerbroadcast tothose that couldnot fit in.

Elected council-lors of all the par-ties were swornin during a shortceremony andwelcomed to taketheir place on thecouncil benches.

But it will be farfrom easy as he governs what is thesmallest minority council ever seen in thetown.

Pérez won only 8 out of a possible 25seats and has declined – at this point atleast, to go into coalition with any otherparties to gain a ruling majority. It will cer-tainly be a challenge for him and his partyto pass any new legislatures or by-laws

as they would need the support of anoth-er five councilors from other political par-ties.The PSOE Socialists have 7 seats butare technically the polar opposite of thePP, so they would need to rely on theother peripheral parties such as CBM,Liberales, Cuidadanos and Compromis.

Leader of theCuidadanosfor Benidormp a r t y ,L e o p o l d oB e r n a b e uwas snubbedby many ofthe coun-cilors, includ-ing AgustinNavarro whoturned hisback on himduring hisswearing inceremony.

Leopoldo Bernabeu broke the campaignrules by broadcasting his manifesto onSaturday prior to the election on what ismeant to be a day of reflection.

By law no campaigning can take placethe day before election Sunday and allthe other parties have denounced him –the case is now pending.

CALPESECOND CLASS PASSANGERS!

To use the same train, as in thiscase line 9 of the TRAM that unitesBenidorm with Denia, is muchmore difficult in some popu-lations than in others.

The neighbours who must usethis means of transport inCalpe, Benissa, Gata orTeulada have become "sec-ond-class passengers",according to the UnionFer rov ia r io - In te rs ind ica l ,because in these stations tick-ets, bonus trip tickets or TAT(modality for pensionists or alarge family), cannot be pur-chased. In fact, to purchase aticket one must move to the termi-nals of Denia and Altea.

The SF also pointed out that tickets

in all its forms can not be purchasedor activated onboard trains, becausethe computer system does not allow

it; in addition, agents workingonboard of different trains do nothave means to carry it out. And thatis not about it: the vending machines

do not work or do not work properly. The central reported the situation ofthe vending machines to the head of

Customer Care of railways ofthe Generalitat Valenciana(FGV), who, however, "despitehaving promised improve-ment" has not met with thisunion.

Finally, the SF regrets thatpractically no day passes with-out a mishap at the new line 9of the TRAM.

Regarding the lack of meansof this connection, the unionhas recently denounced the

poor state oºf the railroad in numer-ous populations or the fact that sometrains leak smoke into the interior oftheir booths.

DEAD FISH IN LES SALINESWe reported last week, that Calpe towncouncil was due to install a new pump tohelp recover the loss of sea water in LesSalines, however despite the promisesof the City of Calpe, the drying of LesSalines continues.

After the failure of the two water pumps thatbring water to the marshland we arealready seeing larger consequences, asmore fish begin to die. The Cultural andEcological Association of Calpe (ACEC)

has announced protests "if thecouncil does not stop the eco-logical deterioration.

Environmentalists say the waterlevel continues to fall in the LesSalines, the 'Salt Marsh' whichis a significant environmentaland iconic emblem of Calpe.Last week the town council saidthat they will install a new pumpto replace the loss of water,

which was estimated over18,000 cubic meters lastweek and could be signifi-cantly more now. Thepump should inject 90cubic meters of water perhour which is going to takeover a week to replace, inthe current situation whichcould get worse still.

More reports of a largeamount of dead fish visiblearound the perimeter of the

marshland producing "astrong stench that is a con-stant nuisance to neigh-bors and an unpleasantimage to our visitors duringthis time, as evidence a sit-uation of abandonmentand degradation of one ofthe landmarks of Calpe. "ACEC also fears that "suchlack of foresight shown bythe council may causeirreparable damage to theareas biodiversity."

An investigation was opened byJavea Town Coucnil after the appear-ance of dead fish in the Canal de LaFontana in the last week, which wasreported by Spanish NewspaperXabia al Dia.

After receiv-ing the resultsof tests takento determinethe cause ofthe issue, ithas beenruled thatthere hasbeen a seri-ous drop ofoxygen in thewater, causing fish to be in distress andcause breathing difficulties resulting intheir death.

The drop in oxygen is due to a powerfailure to a desalination water which isextremely important at this time of yearas the water levels are already lowerthan normal.

Desalination (also called “desalinization”and “desalting”) is the process of remov-

ing dissolved salts from water, thus pro-ducing fresh water from seawater. It has been said that the Fontana canal, before the commissioning of the desali-nation pump was a space with little bio-logical life, where the water was notrenewed or had the presence of fish.

The pumphas helpedsee thebenefit ofthe effectsof desali-nation thath a v eh e l p e dchange thewaterwayto an opti-

mal environment for the growth anddiversity of marine life and new species.

The town council have requested thecompany that manages the Canal sys-tem install a backup system to preventany biological damage.

As well as the new findings investiga-tions are ongoing so they can rule outother hypotheses such as illegal dump-ing or vandalism.

THE CRAFT MARKETS THIRD YEAROn Friday 19 June a mot-ley crowd of crafts peo-ple will set up their hum-ble stalls in the squareby the sea front at theend of Avenida Jaime Iin the port (Puerto) ofJávea.

This is the third year run-ning that Amata (theregional craft associa-tion) joins forces with thelocal shopkeepers toliven up the promenadealong the sea front witha craft fair. A real craftfair, with real craft work-ers who make what theysell and hope to sell whatthey make. Not for nothinghas Amata chosen the slo-gan "Artesanía de Autor"which means that what yousee is made by the man orwoman on the stall - noth-ing imported, nothing

made by friends or from asmall factory.

The stalls can vary fromweek to week but you willfind stalls with leatherbags, children's shoes, leather belts, originallamps from recycled mate-rial or from artfully formedwire, rag dolls, woodentoys and puppets, jewelryfrom silver, copper, silk, ceramics, macramé or

wrought iron, hand painteddesigner clothes and evensome paintings and sculp-

tures. Manyof the peopleon the stallswill be work-ing, and youcan watch, orget them toadd a nameor a detail or,if you canwait a fewdays, getthem tomake some-

thing to order.

Amata was set up in 1998and remains true to its

original philoso-phy, which is thatonly goods madeby the people onthe stalls can besold on the craftfairs it organises- not somethingthat can be saidof many other

craft fairs. That is whymore and more aficiona-dos have come to appreci-ate this special quality - thequality of a gallery even if itis sold in the street from astall. Different stalls comefor the whole summer, orjust a few weeks so as tocombine a few weeks atthe beach with the possibil-ity of earning a living. It's avaried show, week byweek. Never boring.

On Tuesday,Thursday andSaturday eveningJosé the potter willtake his wheelalong to allow thevisitor to have a tryat turning a bowl -you can rinse yourhands in the seaafterwards - andVirginia comesevery evening to

draw caricatures ofpeople. A visit to themarket can be com-bined with a stroll to theport (with its fishingboats and fish market)and back along thepromenade with itsattractive bars andrestaurants, shops andterraces, to enjoy thecool sea breezes andwatch all the other visi-tors walking, joggingand cycling along. And, if you like modernarchitecture, you canhave a look at theVirgen de Loretochurch, a concrete

structure shaped like aship!

The market runs from19 June to 13September (except fora few days when thelocals celebrate someor other fiesta) andopens at 7 in theevening and shuts atmidnight. A sailboat sporting a Danish Flag run aground ontoa beach last weekend on to the Portet de Moraira.

The only person on board was a 76 year old Danishman who had dropped anchor to have a rest, howeverthe tide pushed the boat onto the beach which got stuckin the sand.

The man had set sail from the marina of Almerimar,Almeria, his next stop was the Balearics on the way toSardinia, he did not notice that once he had lowered hisanchor it was not hooked properly and dragged alongthe seabed until the boat finally run aground.

It has been reported the boat was towed back to sea onMonday and the boat did not suffer any serious dam-age.

SPANISH PROPERTY MARKET STILLON A ROLLER COASTER

The roller coaster nature of the Spanishproperty market recovery is laid bare withthe latest data on prices showing that theslowdown has not yet gone, nor has thedifference between official figures andthose from real estate firms.

The latest figures from valuations compa-ny Tinsa show that at a national levelproperty prices are still falling althoughthere are regions where they are risingwhile the latest data from the HousingDepartment show prices falling slightly.

The Tinsa data for May, based on thecompany’s own valuations, shows thataverage national house prices were down3.6% year on year but this global figurehides considerable regional variations.

For example the biggest price falls are inprovincial capitals and large cities with a

FOOD AND DRINK

Preparation time: 30 minutes (plustime to prove)Cooking time: 10 minutesDifficulty rating: Easy

Don’t be afraid -- mix by hand!

Some bread is soft and chewy, whileothers have a firm, tight crumb structure, like brioche. This is determined by thelength of mixing time. For my flatbread,we want the first texture, so roll yoursleeves up and turn off you mobilephones!.

Ingredients

Number of servings: 12• 1 kg Strong 00 Bread Flour• 1 tablespoon salt• 2 tablespoons sugar• 650 ml tepid water

Method

• First of all empty the bag offlout onto a clean surface andmake a large well, sprinkle the sugarand salt onto the flour and crumble theyeast into the middle, then slowly addthe tepid water little by little mixing withyour hand in the shape of a fork

• Knead, knead and knead. Kneading iswhere that gluten structure starts toform. Lightly flour your work surface andknead the dough by first pushing downtowards the table and then away fromyour body, then folding the dough backover itself under your hand and giving ita quarter turn. Repeat this movementuntil the dough smooth’s out. When it’stotally smooth and very pliable, it'sready, this will take about 10 to 15 min-

utes of kneading, it’s a workout! If thisdoesn't appeal to you, you can mix thedough on low speed in an electric mixerfitted with the dough hook until therough mass forms, about 1 to 2 minutes.Raise the speed to medium and mixuntil a smooth ball forms around thehook, about 3 to 4 minutes.

• Want to make yours ahead? No prob-lem. Despite some recipes that mayargue otherwise, bread dough can bemade ahead of time. Just let the dough

rise in the refrigerator, covered, overnight. A slow rise like this also givesthe dough more flavors, because theyeast will eat the sugars in the doughmore slowly. So really, it’s a win-win. Letthe dough sit at room temperature for 30minutes before shaping and grilling.

• Grill on a high heat turning every 4 to5 minutes. For finishing, I bash the flatbreads with the back of my knife anddrizzle with different oils, like in thiscase, garlic with basil and smokedpaprika with sun dried tomatoes. Thento finish sprinkle some powderedparmesan and you’re ready to serve!Enjoy!

“Top Food, Top Service, Value ForMoney.”

Reviewed 21 May 2015Had an excellent meal here last night. I had a stripped steakwith parmesan and tomato salad. The wife had a sirloin steakwith mushroom sauce. It was a struggle to clear my plate onlybecause the helping was so big. One of the most enjoyablemeals in years. The place was very busy with locals as well astourists. The service was still great and nothing was too muchtrouble. This was our second visit of the week the first was justas good when we visited with friends.

“Out Of This World!!”Reviewed 18 May 2015Just finished a gorgeous meal at Duetto. We been meaning totry every time we been in Benidorm and finally did! We bothhad lasagne with garlic bread and a portion of chips. And all Ican say is WOW! All the food was fresh bar the chips but thatwas not an issue at all. The lasagne was cooked in a woodstove oven, big portion and gorgeous filling with the sauce andmeat. The pasta was fresh aswell and the garlic bread. We fin-ished off with a big slab of cheesecake which was amazing! For drinks we had 2 bottles of mahou. All this for 37€, whichwas certainly a bargain! We've both already said we will bereturning before we go home. Customer service is on pointtoo. Do not give this a miss when in Benidorm!!

“Brilliant Place”Reviewed 7 June 2015We really enjoyed this place. The name could do with changingas I don't think it's particularly enticing, but this ticks all theboxes for me - very good wine, very good steak and some ofthe best service in Moraira. The whole experience was good.

“Inviting Terrace”Reviewed 7 June 2015Called here on Wednesday just for a relaxing drink as the ter-race looked very inviting with curtains around to block the sun.Enjoyed our drinks on the settees watching what was going on.Next week we are going for a steak as the menu looked verynice.

“What An Excellent Restaurant”Reviewed 4 June 2015Really a spot on restaurant, its nothing like how it use to beinside and is now a lovely open plan restaurant inside with aview in to the kitchen. We ate off the set menu with lots ofchoice, i had a fillet steak that came with two sauces includedin the price. Portion size was very good and steak cooked justright backed up with the service you are use to in his premiumbar a few doors down. People should go out there way to trythe food here the quality is easy up there with places like CasaToni, or Ca pepe. Don’t keep driving past saying we should trythere sometime, you will go and def go back. Couldn’t fault asingle thing was a great meal and night

“Super Fillet Steak”Reviewed 9 May 2015Blink and you miss it, driven past many times then noticed itwas steak bar. Ate inside as outer terrace too near the road.Interior stylish and very professional guy served us with asuperb fillet steak. Only a couple of people in, shame, hope itsucceeds. Be careful if you are unable to walk upstairs, it is ona higher level.

“Sunday Lunch”Reviewed 22 April 2015We went as a family for Sunday lunch, as it had been recom-mended by some friends. Amazing value, great food the portionsize was big and the best cauliflower cheese I have tasted.Great customer service nothing was too much trouble. Thedaily menu is changing so we will be back to taste it.

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

Your mind is focused and your thinking innovative, so you may find others will bemore drawn to you than ever today. They see you as a leader in you field andwould no whatever it takes to be allowed on your journey. If only it were this easywhen it comes to love and passion.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

Now that you’ve got all aspects of your life on a structured positive journey, you’lldo everything in your power to ensure it stays like that. Maybe it’s best to let youhigh standards slip a tiny bit when it comes to love and passion though. It shouldbe more spontaneous don’t you think?

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Now that your life is less held back and restricted, you’ll manage to move aheadat a much more productive pace, and you’ll start today the way you mean to goon. Your confidence is building up again and you know you’re the best in yourfield so make sure your salary reflect this.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

You know there will be certain times in your life where you need to think outsidethe box, go out on a limb or take a chance, but today is not one of those times,so don’t allow yourself to be convinced otherwise, or you’ll regret it in the weeksto come. Stick rigidly to your own decisions

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

Crossed lines in communication and off hand remarks in the home zone could becaused by everyone having vastly different agendas today. Why not state yourcase over what you’re doing and allot the time you need to do so. The sameapplies to everyone else in the equation.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

Even if you don’t feel 100% confident in decisions you’ve made, you need to con-vince others that you are. Make your move in professional or personal situationsby being bold and innovative and others wont think to question you. Stutter andstammer and they will.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

It’s just as well that you have luck on your side today as it’ll carry you throughany situations difficult or not. If you’ve been avoiding practical issues, this is yourbest day to finally tackle them. If you can’t do things yourself, others will behappy to help you, and you’ll be grateful for that.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Your persuasive powers are so strong this week you’re positively purring with sat-isfaction. If there’s something you want others to do, then get cracking. Theycan’t seem to resist you. Tackle jobs you’re good at first as others will see howtalented and competent you are

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

It’s all very well struggling against the odds, but the best thing you could do is tobe patient and wait until things take a turn for the better. Yes its annoying andyes its frustrating, but you’ll only make it worse if you take matters into your ownhands. All comes to he who waits.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Not everyone will come up with the goods when you want them, but do you seethat as them being difficult on purpose, or do you see it as them not being able tocope with the tasks they’ve been given? It’s time to ask if they’re up for the taskat hand. If not, get someone else.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

Specific objectives in the personal arena are what you’ve been focusing on forquite some time now, but it seems your imagination has led you a merry danceand what you’ve now got is nothing like what you wanted. You’re bored and timeis dragging. Make a quick sharp exit.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

There’s no point trying to talk your way out of it anymore. You’re bad at keepingyour finances in the black, and now need to take steps to rectify that. Look atyour income and expenditure and you’ll soon discover where the problems lie. You’ll need to curb extravagance.

IS IT REALLY A BRIGHT IDEA?Whenever we see famous American stars on TV or atthe cinema they nearly all seem to have that "gleam-ing" smile as if they have been in one of thoseadverts for the latest miracle tooth paste.

You know the type. "Just brush with this super gel pasteand in one week you will have that Hollywood smile". It isperhaps this stereotyping that makes many of us wish forthe pure white smile. Some of you may remember a film"Austin Powers" where the main English character hadyellowing teeth. This, although a comedy, showed howthe US view the English mouth.

What is it thatcauses toothstains in thefirst place? Inall honesty wep r o b a b l yalready knowthat tea coffeeand other foods and drinks stain the teeth but if the teethhad been brushed and flossed as we all know we shouldmany of these stains would be avoided or at leastreduced. Smoking produces heavy stains on teeth and itis fairly simple to know, just by looking, whether someonehas been a smoker for a long time.

There are many products on the market now promisingThe Whiter Smile. In the USA an estimated 1.4 million dol-lars is spent each year on over the counter teeth whiten-ing products. That is without taking into account themoney spent at dental practices. The question is arethese products healthy? It may whiten the teeth but, forexample, can the bleach used damage the gums?

So what processes are available and what are the prosand cons of them? In next weeks issue, we will be talkingto local dentist Dr. Cardo Canega. He will be looking atthe different procedures available and giving his expertopinion on ways to proceed if you want to alter the look ofyour smile.

Dr. Cardo Canegas practice is situated at Cami de laMonja, 11, La Nucia just off the CV70 between round-abouts 1 and 2. Your first consultation is free withDr. Canega. Tel 96 62 36 130

SYMPTOMS: A WELL-MEANING FRIENDAre your symptoms your enemy? Are your symptoms your true PROBLEM?Should you be looking for a way to cover up yoursymptoms? If you don t have any symptoms, are youhealthy? The answer to all these questions is NO.

Symptoms can be a result of direct damage to the body’stissues (pain from a fall), or our organism expressing itselfworking for survival (vomiting due to toxic ingestion). Abody working badly transmits its unhealthy state throughthe nervous system. The purpose of medication is to elim-inate the symptoms. In effect, this is a way to mask thedisease and silence the alarm (symptom), allowing thedisease to continue to advance even though we don thave any symptoms.

Often the symptoms are truly necessary, as they are afirst class mechanism of protection for the body. An exam-ple is fever of a viral component. The body temperature israised in order to kill the virus as quickly as possible and to heal the body. Another example is inflammation whichstops us from moving the damaged tissues and facilitatetheir healing, as in the case of swelling after a sprain. Some people who start chiropractic care suffer what iscalled “retracing”. Old lesions return or the presentingcondition becomes more acute. It all passes very quicklyand it is important that is not seen as a relapse, and is rec-ognized as a normal process in the recuperation of health.

In disease process symptoms arethe last things to appear. Thehealing process requires TIME.Time is necessary to replaceabnormal or sick cells withhealthy cells. Therefore, a person can continueto have symptoms even thoughthey have begun chiropractic careand healthy cells have begun toregenerate correctly. These

symptoms could be the body expressing that there arestill a number of abnormal tissue cells to be replaced. Therefore more time is required for a complete regenera-tion of healthy tissue cells. Chiropractic adjustmentsincrease life messages to the body and increase eachperson s potential for good health by allowing the body toregenerate and function correctly. Some of the most com-mon conditions that respond really well to Chiropractictreatments are Arthritis, Backache, Headaches,Stomachache and much more.

With record temperatures around the country, it isimportant to keep your dogs in mind when it comesto keeping cool. Here are some tips for beating thesummer heat!Exercise your dog early in the morning or late atnight.

Since these are the cooler parts of the day, this will makethe walk more comfortable for both you and your dog. I'ma believer in vigorous exercise for healthy dogs, but this

is the time of year to back off on exercise intensity.Watch for signs of dehydration.Dogs can't sweat. They cool off by panting, so an over-heated dog will drool excessively. It will become lethargic, its eyes will be bloodshot, and it may appear a little pale.If you lift its skin, it will take longer than usual for the skinto fall back into place.

Keep your dog hydrated!Different dogs have different needs when battling theheat. Keep in mind that darker coats absorb more heatthan lighter coats. Also, overweight dogs are at higher riskfor dehydration. Carry a bottle of water when going on awalk with your dog. Better yet have your dog carry it foryou in a backpack or a vest! The water in the bottles willkeep the dog cooler and also give the dog a sense of pur-pose.

Find innovative ways to cool your dog.Don't have air conditioning? No problem! Find a spot inthe shade and set up a kiddie pool. Lay down a wet towelfor your dog to lie on. Or simply set up a fan in front of apan of ice. At the Dog Psychology Center, we have sprin-klers that spray the dogs with a gentle mist of water.

Dogs cool from the bottom up.Make sure to spray the paws and stomach, not just thetop of the dog, when spraying it with water. A wet toweldoes more good on the bottom of your dog than when laidon the top of its coat.

Let your dog dig!Your dog may resort to finding his own way to avoid theheat. Dog in nature dig their dens not out of frustration butto find food, hide, give birth--or keep cool! If it's possible, locate a shady area where it's okay for your dog to dig.

Let your dog check the weather.Dogs don't have the Weather Channel, so they don'tknow why they are being denied a long walk for the day.Allow your dog to step outside and feel for itself that it istoo hot, too wet, or too cold to go on a long walk.Instinctually, the dog will understand that it has to shortenits walk, or simply come back inside where it's safe.

Never leave your dog in a parked car.The car retains more heat than an open area, even if it isin the shade. Plus, a dog may get overexcited in the cardue to passersby or panic from claustrophobia, makingdehydration more likely. On longer trips, make sure youhave water for the dog and keep the AC running.

Use hot weather as an excuse to swim more often! The best activity you can do in summertime or hot weath-er is swimming. Instead of walking the dog, take the dogon a swim! If you hold on and allow your dog to take youaround the pool, it becomes a powerful bonding experi-ence for the two of you, similar to the walk.

TOP SUMMER TIPS!

We’re not just a bowls club, we’re a “Fun Club” andSaturday night 76 members and friends were BarnDancing in the courtyard to the music of the‘Shamrockers’. The food was good, the music great andthe dancing – sometimes a bit of a shambles but every-one had a great time.

Benitachell Bowls ClubA Spanish court has ruled that claim-ing ignorance about his finances isno defense against charges of evad-ing more than €4m in taxes

Claiming ignorance doesn’t seem tobe working for Lionel Messi this timearound. After his newest appeal wasrejected, it looks like the four-timeWorld Player of the Year andBarcelona star will have to go tocourt in Spain to face tax evasioncharges.

According to the BBC, Messi and hisfather, Jorge, are accused of with-holding earnings between 2007 and2009 by funneling income throughcompanies in Belize and Uruguayresponsible for selling the soccerstar’s image rights. The contractsinvolved companies like Danone,Adidas, Pepsi-Cola and Procter andGamble. The case against themclaims they’ve defrauded the govern-ment of over €4m.

His previous appeal, thrown out by aSpanish judge last October, wasbased on the argument that Messiwas not responsible for managinghis finances. According to El Pais,Messi’s defense team argued he“never devoted a minute of his life toreading, studying or analyzing” thecontracts. Instead, his father was pri-marily responsible for the player’sbooks.

A similar appeal was made this timearound. But Spanish courts don’tthink Messi’s professed ignorance isa good enough reason to drop thecharges against him, the BBCreports.

In August 2013, Messi and his fathervoluntarily made a €5m payment tocover the tax and interest.

TENNIS AT QUEENSMURRAY THORUGH , NADAL OUT

Andy MurrayMurray began his warm-up for Wimbledon with astraight sets win over LuYen-hsun at the AegonChampionships.

Just over ten days afterlosing out to NovakDjokovic in the semi-finalof the French Open,Murray opened his grasscourt season with a 6-4,7-5 victory over Lu. Buthaving demonstrated his increasingprowess on clay this year, Murray sug-gested he was still adapting to the newsurface on Tuesday despite comingthrough in one hour and 19 minutes.

Ranked 63rd in the world, Lu put up avaliant battle against Murray – a player hehad beaten once previously at the Beijing2008 Olympics. He broke serve in gamefive with a running forehand but Murrayresponded immediately to break back andeventually take the opening set.

The Scot then battled from a 2-0 deficit totake the second set and with it the matchto set up a second round encounter withSpain’s Fernando Verdasco.

"It was nice. It's always a pleasure tocome back here," said Murray.

Rafael NadalRafa Nadal crashed out of the AegonChampionships at the first hurdle, losing

in three sets to Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-36-7 6-4 at Queen's Club.

Nadal's dismal defeat against the worldnumber 79 is the latest in a growing list oflacklustre performances in a troubled2015 campaign for the former world No 1.

The 14-time Grand Slam winner was beat-en at the French Open for only the secondtime in his glittering career when NovakDjokovic won their quarterfinal clash inParis.

As a result, Nadal's ranking has plungedto 10th – his lowest position for a decade– and to add insult to injury he will nowhead to Wimbledon, which gets underwaylater this month, with renewed questionsabout a decline that hit another low withthis setback in west London.

Nadal tried to downplay the significance ofthe result, saying: "It's a loss. I didn't playbad at all and fought until the end. Gameson grass are like this.
