BBQ Safety Tips

With the July 4th

holiday right

around the corner, hanging out at

the pool, firing up the grill and

firework displays are sure to fol-low. But while barbequed foods

are delicious for humans, they

can be dangerous to your canine.

Below are a few of the foods that

may show up at

your barbeque

that could prove

to be debilitating

to your pooch.

Onions, garlic,chives, hot-

peppers and ja-

lapenos are

great additions to your burgers or

dips and appetizers, but can

prove to be unhealthy to your

pooch. Onions and garlic in all

forms (raw, cooked, powdered or

dehydrated) can break down a

dog’s red blood cells. This break-down can lead to anemia in dogs.

Symptoms of anemia in dogs in-

clude weakness, vomiting,

breathlessness and loss of inter-

est in food.

Grapes and raisins, which maybe found in salads and desserts, can cause kidney failure in dogs.An early symptom of kidneyfailure is vomiting and within a

day or two the dog might ap-pear lethargic and depressed.

Guacamole, a favorite dip,

made from avocados, can also

make dogs ill. Avocados con-

tain persin. Al-

though persin is

safe for humans

(who are not al-

lergic to it), it is

not so safe fordogs and large

amounts of persin

can even be toxic

to them. Persin

can be found in the avocados’

leaves, seeds and fruit, as well

as its bark. So make sure it

doesn't end up in your best

friend's bark!

Barbeques are a fun way to

celebrate the summer holidays.

But be sure that you and your

guests only feed your pooch

foods that will keep them

happy and healthy!

Employee of the Month

“What I’ve Learned From My Clients” Corner One of my favorite topics for our newsletter are those tips, ideas and products I learnabout from our clients. One of the most interesting products I have learned aboutfrom my clients is something called the Thundershirt . The Thundershirt is exactly whatit sounds like. It is a shirt that dogs wear during a thunderstorm. I was inspired to thenwrite this article, though when, during a recent visit to Las Vegas, I saw a commercial

for the product.

The idea for the Thundershirt began when Durham resident Phil Blizzard’s own dog,

Dosi, had a strong fear of thunderstorms and firecrackers. Wanting to find a way to

comfort his pet without having to resort to drugs, Mr. Blizzard invented the Thunder-

shirt. Similar to the concept of swaddling to calm an infant, the Thundershirt’s design

of gentle pressure works to calm a dog. Experts believe that such pressure has a calm-

ing effect on the nervous system. The method of using pressure to relieve anxiety has

been a common practice for years.

If you feel that your dog is suffering from anxi-

ety, why not visit Thundershirt’s website:

June’s A Whole Lotta Love Employee of the Month is TaraDunn. Tara hails from Tifton, Georgia. She is a dog walkerand pet sitter at AWLL and also assists Michael with sched-uling.

Tara graduated from the University of Georgia with a de-gree in English. She loves to read and write, especially po-etry and short stories.

Tara was surrounded by various and sundry animals grow-ing up. Her first dog was Shang Li Kai, otherwise known to

her small self as Shangy Nangy. Along with Shang was Miss Piggy, and her multiple kittens

who came and went as they pleased, a black cocker spaniel named Sam, whom her family in-herited inherited from her great grandfather when he died. Tara also had a pug namedBuster, a golden retriever named Charlie and several cats: Rocky, Sandy, Crayon, Colors,Oliver, Spotty, Kit Kat and Biggie Smalls – the Notorious CAT. Tara and her brother had

gerbils named Midnight and Sunflower for a long time (well, as long as gerbils live) and fish.

Living here in Durham with Tara and her fiancé, Carter, is a beautiful tuxedo Maine Coon Mix

named Ilah and she is Tara’s baby. The Tifton animals who live at Tara’s parent house (which she claims too) are Oscar (a Maltie-Poo), Fred (a yellow lab), George (a black lab-hound mix) and two sweet princess cats namedElvis (a she!) and Little Girl.

When I asked Tara what her favorite part of working at AWLL, she explained, “I love workingwith animals and I really enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done. They reward you with tailwags and kisses.”

She went on to say, “I also love the exercise. The animals challenge me and push me to be

stronger and also to be more aware. My senses are honed from walking so many big, strongand playful pups at once, and keeping them out of harm’s way.”

Believe it or not, besides all of the different hats she wears at AWLL, Tara also works as a So-cial Media and Web Optimization consultant for two independent businesses in the Trianglearea: Atelier N Fine Jewelry and Comfort Services Heating & Air. She helps them to connectwith their customers and clientele using social media. She also assists them in growing theirnetworks. There is also some light advertising, photography, branding and marketing involved. As you can imagine, we are excited to have Tara on board and to have her as our June Em-ployee of the Month.

This month's pet in the spotlight is Timmy, a 4 year old white and grey great pyrennes dog.Born in Tennessee, Tim was adopted by Susan Glowacz and Dave DuPont from a privatefamily in Durham. While Timmy has many talents and gifts one of his best is his ability toslide his lanky body through the smallest of spaces. Susan considers him a canine Houdini!

(Or should that be 'Houndini'?)

Timmy is a gentle giant of a dog and truly gets alongwell with people. Although only 57 lbs when firstconfiscated from an overwhelmed invidual, Timmy hasgrown and has a fondness for steak followed by a de-sert of Susan Graff's special homemade AWLL dog

biscuits. Timmy loves running in the snow and gallop-ing through his house, and when he plays he tosses

his head, snaps his teeth and 'smiles.'

Truly a special friend, we're glad to know Timmy and

honor him in our spotlight!
