PASTORAL LEADER’S NOTES Dear Parishioners,

A few weeks ago I was reading the bulletin from St. Raphael’s and came across this article written by Paul Vidmar. Paul is currently a deacon at St. Raphael’s Church and works as a Dale Carnegie Solutions trainer. I thought the five principles he wrote about were important for all of us to remember as we continue to make our parish a vibrant faith community. Here’s the article for you to read and ponder:

The vision for all of us living in the Green Bay Diocese is to be missionary disciples striving to lead all people to the Kingdom of God. In what ways can we make this exciting vision become a reality?

We have all figured out that we can not do everything on our own and that we need the willing cooperation of others. To gain the willing cooperation of others we must start by gaining their trust. Once people trust us we can use one of these five principles to help us earn their cooperation, so we can begin to lead them to the Kingdom of God.

The first principle is to understand that the only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it. We can rarely win an argument. Nine times out of ten an argument ends with each of the contestants more firmly convinced than ever that they are right. We can keep a disagreement from becoming an argument by welcoming the disagreement, controlling our emotions, listening, looking for areas of agreement, being honest, and promising to think over the other person’s ideas. Remember that persons convinced against their will is of the same opinion still.

The second principle to gain cooperation is to show respect for the other person’s opinion and never say they are wrong. It’s difficult, under even the most favorable conditions, to change people’s minds. So why make it harder by making them defensive. We can handle the situation by simply asking them why they feel the way that they do or by saying, “I may be wrong. Let’s examine the facts.” Two thousand years ago Jesus said it best in Matthew 5:25: “Agree with thine adversary quickly.”

The third principle is to let the other person do a great deal of the talking. When we use this principle, we need to sincerely listen with patience and with an open mind. We need to encourage the other person to share their ideas and feelings and not interrupt them. Phrases like, “tell me more” or “please give me an example” will encourage them to share information and may even allow them to talk themselves into cooperating with you.

The fourth cooperation principle is to try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view. We need to remember that people may be totally wrong. But they don’t think so. We should not criticize them. Any fool can do that. There is a reason why the other person thinks and acts as they do. If we can honestly put ourselves into their place, it will help us say and do the things that will influence the person in a positive way.

The fifth principle is to be sympathetic with the other person’s ideas and desires. Three fourths of the people we meet crave sympathy. After we give them sympathy they will listen to what we have to say. A simple way to be sympathetic is by saying “I don’t blame you for feeling as you do. If I were you, I would probably feel the same way”.

These five principles to gain willing cooperation will help us meet people where they are in their lives. They will help us discern what actions we need to recommend to them, so they may be closer to the Kingdom of God. When we can create win-win situations with the people we serve, we all can move closer to making our vision of missionary disciples become a reality.

Deacon Paul Vidmar

One more week of recovery to go! Yeah! I look forward to seeing all of you next weekend.

STEWARDSHIP & MORE We’re taking a hard look at how we impact our community with the love of Jesus. We

want to reach everyone, whether they go to church every week or haven’t stepped

inside a church in years. It’s time for us to love and serve every soul, leading all

people to the Kingdom of God!

Parish Mission Planning (PMP) in Omro & Winneconne:

SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, August 24, 1:30-5:45 with Mass to follow. Leadership Summit: This summit is for anyone who wants to learn more about or desires

to get involved in carrying out the GOALS and ACTION PLANS of Parish Mission Planning. **Additional details will be coming in the near future!

PMP teams have created goals and action plans to be implemented over the next three years. To follow is a summary of what our parishes will be focusing on:

St. Mary, Omro: 1. Equipping spiritual maturity and developing missionary disciples by providing opportunities and personally inviting people to Mass to celebrate special events and to grow in faith and relationship with Jesus. 2. Create awareness of St. Mary’s in the broader community, by participating in community events (e.g. parades), and by offering retreats, vacation bible school, and other programming that helps form missionary disciples. 3. Invigorate the parish and reach out to the local community by forming a team and implementing the use of FORMED.org, a digital platform that gives parishes access to video-based study programs, films and more! 4. Enable evangelization and missionary discipleship through “Personal Connection” projects which will require teams to create outreach projects focused on high school/college students AND a newly wed mentoring program.

St. Mary, Winneconne: 1. To form families as missionary disciples by creating a community outreach to service those within the

broader community. Applications for service will be submitted for service projects, and volunteers will be required to carryout requested services.

2. To intentionally gather current contact information for, and to survey families with newborns, newly married couples, and those registered and non-engaged to identify their needs and provide opportunities for them to discover and follow Jesus.

3. Invigorate the parish and reach out to the local community by forming a team and implementing the use of FORMED.org, a digital platform that gives parishes access to video-based study programs, films and more!

4. Enable evangelization by offering Alpha within the parish and expanding it to the broader community over time, having parish wide discipleship and service opportunities, having coffee and donut fellowship 1x a month after Sunday Mass, and having a game night on a Friday one time a month for all ages.

As you can see ,there are many wonderful things to help our parish and communities at large discover and follow Jesus! PLEASE PRAY for the Holy Spirit to reveal to you how you are being called, as a missionary disciple, to get involved and help make Parish Mission Planning come to reality!

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13

WHAT ARE 2 ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOUND IN A REAL

SUNDAY FUNDAY??

GOOD FOOD - We chose to continue with the plate lunch served last year - a turkey with gravy or a pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, and Jim’s Own baked beans. However, this year we’ve added a cup of delicious cold slaw for all you “crunch” lovers. Yum. Just $8 per plate. GOOD MUSIC – In lieu of a band, we’ve gone back to the services of a deejay. Seth comes to us highly recommended. He will be playing all types of music old and new so come prepared to experience great sounds, lots of crowd participation as well as all the craziness that comes with the performance of a professional deejay.

Sunday, August 11th- bring your appetite, your toe tapping/dancing shoes, a bit of

money and be ready for a wonderful August afternoon.
