Home Improvement Tips:
Q: My front door does not lock properly. Our builder returned and made some sort of adjustment a year or so ago that seemed to fix it, but now the problem is back and our warranty is past, so I can’t call on the builder again. The deadbolt works, but the regular entry latch doesn’t seem to catch all the time. Sometimes, we have to kind of lean down on the door handle to get the latch to catch. How can this be fixed?Margaret
A: It sounds like the striker plate just needs a slight adjustment. The striker plate is the metal plate that the latch slides against as you close the door, then the latch should slip into the hole in the middle. If you have to push the door down to get it to latch you should be able to loosen the two screws and adjust the plate upwards slightly. You may want to check to make sure the handset is not loose in the door as this could cause the latch to move up and down as well.If you have any other questions please give us a call or stop by the store for more helpful advice.
