The first ‘Orange Blotch’ on the market is compact with short flower stems and flowers that sit above the foliage. Great for overwintering in the landscape or will make a great combo pot.

66 | MARIGOLD ‘SUPER HERO’ | BENARYBenary is celebrating 175 years by naming this marigold series after their ‘Su-per Hero’, Fritz Benary. The Benary family lost everything after World War II so Fritz rode his bike across Germany collecting seeds to restart the company. ‘Super Hero’ is a compact series that is earlier to flower and the most uniform series for packs and pots. AAS winner - ‘Spry’ is a beautiful bi-color, deep red with bright yellow centers. ‘Spry’, pictured, is definitely the winner out of this 8 color series.

Benary’s Super HeroHolland was occupied by Germany during World War II, and after the war Benary Seed Company had almost nothing left. Fritz Benary, after returning from the war, got on his bicycle and traveled across Europe collecting seeds and refreshing contacts in the industry. Without his ‘Super Hero’ efforts there would be no Benary Seed Company today.

67 | PANSY ‘FREEFALL XL’ SERIES | FLORANOVAA brand new series of trailing pansies with much larger blooms than the Freefall series. The Freef-alls are different from the Cool Wave pansies in that they are more out-spreading than down spreading, giving them a fuller appearance in baskets or in the ground. 9 colors offered , with straight colors, faces, and wings. Our team found the ‘Red Wing’, pictured, to be striking.

68 | PETUNIA ‘HEADLINER STARRY SKY BURGUNDY’ | SELECTA3rd intro in the very popular Sky series of Headliner petunias, ‘Starry Sky Burgundy’ flowers drew us from across the greenhouse with their intense color combination. Like the others in the series, the pattern will be variable and changeable, but always showy and dramatic. Sure to be a best-seller for many years to come!

69 | PETUNIA ‘PERFECTUNIA IBIZA’ | WESTHOFF‘Ibiza’ has a dark eye that veins out into the purple pink blooms to make this a great addition to the Perfectunia series. Perfectunias are easy and early, and first-to-flower on tidy upright mounded plants. They have outstanding weather tolerance. Growing 6-12” tall with a 12-18” spread, they will work well in containers, hanging baskets, and the landscape. It is a heat lover, attracts hummingbirds, and is a pollinator plant.

70 | PETUNIA ‘POTUNIA’ SERIES | DUMMENPotunias are Dummen’s series of reliable and uniform, compact growing and smaller flowered petunias. Two new additions to the Potunia series for 2019; ‘Baby Pink’ (pictured), an adorable soft pink with white center, and ‘Coral’, with salmon coral centers that fade to lighter coral with prominent veining towards the edges of the petals.

71 | PETUNIA ‘SANGUNA PATIO RADIANT DARK BLUE’ | SYNGENTAA beautiful bicolor flower, white inner throat with a radiant dark blue edge. Compact, and early to flower with a controlled and upright plant habit. Grown cool, the patio series require little to no PGRs. Great choice for high density production in small containers.

72 | PELARGONIUM ‘MOXIE! SERIES | SYNGENTAThe next generation of interspecific hybrid geraniums. Moxie! combines the greenhouse production performance of Tango with the field performance of Calliope. Bred for brilliant color in small containers. Moxie! has a mounded plant habit, and dense branching that delivers excellent flower coverage. 6 colors in the series so far, ‘Dark Red’ (pictured left), Deep Rose’, ‘Deep Rose Mega Splash’ (pictured right), ‘Pink’, ‘Scarlet’, and ‘White’ (pictured

center).

73 | PELARGONIUM ‘CALLIOPE LARGE’ SERIES | SYNGENTACalliope is still the #1 geranium for color and performance. 5 new colors added to Calliope Large class; ‘Rose Mega Splash’, Hot Pink’ (pictured left), Lavender Splash’, ‘Hot Rose’, and ‘Lavender’ (pictured right). All with the same vigorous habit, flower power, and heat tolerance. Excellent for large containers or in the landscape.

74 | PELARGONIUM ‘CALLIOPE MEDIUM’ SERIES | SYNGENTA Calliope Medium are ideal for building a geranium program, especially with the addition of 3 new colors, pictured from left to right, ‘Hot Rose’, ‘Light Lavender’, and ‘Rose Mega Splash’. The big, deep eye makes the ‘Rose Mega Splash’ a show-stopper! These new additions make the medium calliopes a one stop shop for geraniums. They are well suited for quarts, 6” & 8” containers and hanging baskets.

Basewell cuttings are the innovative new technology that Dummen tells us is the next step in the future of floriculture. It’s unrooted cuttings with roots! Available in full strips, that can be run through a

machine for mechanized sticking, or individual cells that can be hand stuck. Much better margin for error, ‘cause they’ve got roots! SunStanding impatiens have been trialed successfully, and many more annuals and perennials will be added to their offerings for next year.

75 | PELARGONIUM ‘BIG EZEE FOXY FLAMINGO’ | DUMMEN‘Foxy Flamingo’ is a striking new color addition to this series of land-scape geraniums, with soft pink petals edged in deep pink. The large umbels are held directly above the foliage and are shatter resistant. Big EZEE’s were bred for showy, large blossoms and suburban stress tolerance. One cutting in an 8” pot will finish in 7 weeks.

76 | PELARGONIUM ‘CHOCOLATE CHERRY’ | PAC/WESTHOFFThe new Chocolate series geraniums have rich, dark chocolate foliage with green margins and eye-popping bright blooms. The ‘Chocolate Cherry’ has the most pronounced zoning for the series that make the blossoms very showy. Other colors in the series are ‘Chocolate Apricot’ and ‘Chocolate Drag-onfruit’. The plants are densly branched and work well in quart or 6” produc-tion. They are good for stand alone pots or combination containers.

77 | PELARGONIUM ‘PINKERBELL’ | PAC/WESTHOFF‘Pinkerbell’ is a stunning new regal hybrid that is more compact than most regal geraniums with non-stop blooming throughout the summer. No cooling required, but it needs to be grown dry. Great for combinations or will look beautiful in a mono-pot. Our team thinks this is a break-through in Regal geranium breeding!

78 | PELARGONIUM ‘SUPER MOON RED’ | SELECTAA new zonal geranium, ‘Super Moon Red’ is not part of a series, but a stand alone beauty worthy of consideration. Stunning, large red flower clusters with unique dark stems for contrast, above strong, vigorous plants. Excellent habit, and near perfect flower to foliage ratio.

79 | PELARGONIUM ‘PRETTY LITTLE PINK SPLASH’ | SYNGENTAWe saw more new geraniums this year than we have in at least the last 10 years, and this little beauty is the one that we liked the most! A unique pink bicolor variety with compact habit and loaded with small flowers. From interspecific breeding, giving it good branching, intense flower color and great garden performance. Selected from Syngenta’s breeding program in interspecific geraniums. Perfect for mixed containers, gardens or stand alone pots.

80 | PETCHOA’SUPERCAL PREMIUM’ SERIES | SAKATAThese were outstanding in the displays and should be on every order. The new SuperCal Premi-ums are early varieties that provide medium vigor with semi-mounding habit, larger flowers, and unique colors. 5 colors, all beautiful, and perfect for mixing with each other. Favorites among our team are ‘Car-amel Yellow’ and ‘Cinnamon’ (both pictured above), along with ‘French Vanilla’, ‘Bordeaux’, and ‘Sunray Pink’. They deliver non-stop color, from spring through fall.

81 | PETUNIA ‘SANGUNA’ SERIES | SYNGENTA3 new additions to the very popular Sanguna series. Sangunas fea-ture big flowers and bright colors. ‘Mega Purple’, pictured, is a stand out with intense, oversize flowers. ‘Rose’ offers gorgeous rose-pink blooms with white throats, and ‘Deep Lavender Vein’ is a rich purple with distinct dark lavender veins. Like the series, these three have a strong plant habit that makes them perfect for hanging baskets as well as foundation plants for the Kwik Kombos.

82 | PETUNIA ’STARLET PINOT RED’ | SELECTAVelvety deep red flowers with dark-er centers make this new selection a show-stopper. Starlets are grower friendly, compact and controlled, early to flower and fast to finish. Great for small pots, and work well with other plants in combos. Look for new Trixiliners to use this new selection, the unique color will be a great accent with almost all other colors.

Many breeding companies and young plant producers that we work with today offer multi-liners, and the products they are producing are bet-ter, prettier, easier to finish, and longer lasting for the end users. With huge im-provements in the breeding of the component plants, we are seeing better matched plants in all of the multi-lin-ers being offered today. Here are some of the best combos that our team saw at CAST.

Multi-Liner Update

Trixi’s are the original multi-liner, and Selecta continues to introduce attractive and inventive combos. Pictured are ‘Written In The Stars’ and ‘Flamingo Feather’.

EHR’s most popular combos, the Confetti liners are reliable and made up of great components. Pictured are ‘Fire Flash’ and ‘Tone On Tone Pumpkin Spice’.

83 | PETUNIA ‘SUPERTUNIA VISTA PARADISE’ | PROVEN WINNERSThe Vista sub-series of Supertunias from Proven Winners is one of the best selling petunias for landscape use in the U.S., and for great rea-sons! Easy to grow, quick to cover a large area, incredible flower power, and this new introduction ‘Vista Paradise’ adds a rich pink color to the series that also includes ‘Bub-blegum’ and ‘Silverberry’. It replac-es ‘Vista Fuchsia’, with a richer and more saturated pink color.

84 | PETUNIA ‘SUPERTUNIA BLUE SKIES’ | PROVEN WINNERSThis beautiful Supertunia addition features silvery, lavender blue flow-ers that put on an irridescent show. Flowers open a deep blue, fade through soft blue, finishing near white, giving the plant a constant yesterday, today, and tomorrow type of appearance. ‘Blue Skies’ is early to flower, 4 weeks earlier than Surfinias. It’s habit and exception-al bloom time will make a great mono pot or a beautiful combo with ‘Supertunia White’.

85 | PETUNIA ‘SURPRISE’ SERIES | DUMMENSurprise has gone to the Stars! The Surprise series are Dummen’s most vigorous, fastest growing petunias, perfect for big hanging baskets and landscape performance but it’s sadly been lacking in flowers with star patterns. Not anymore, with the addition of 2 beauties, ‘Purple Star’ and ‘Monarch Star’. Either of these will make some of the most dynamic hanging baskets that we’ll get to see next year!

When first introduced, the Kwik Kom-bos lagged behind the Trixi’s and Confetti’s in popularity, but they are coming on strong now. Pictured are ‘Powder Puff’ and ‘Ciao Bella’.

Danziger was slow to the market with combos, but this year’s new intros look to be top notch. Pictured are ‘Morning Dew’ and ‘Heydey’.

86 | PETUNIA ‘SUCCESS! 360’ | BENARYA new SUCCESS! grandiflora seed petunia series that has large flowers, vigor and uniformity. The original Success! series has been a hit, with big, bold varieties in a wide range of colors. 360’s are more controlled and uniform, with a great habit to fill packs, pots, or hanging baskets. A great selection with 13 colors offered in this series, including ‘Salmon Vein’, a favorite of ours, pictured.

87 | PETUNIA ‘SUCCESS! HD’ | BENARYAnother SUCCESS! story with this genetically compact series of petunias from seed. SUCCESS! 92 | PHLOX ‘POPSTAR DEEP BLUE’ | FLORANOVAA new addition to this series of annual, seed grown phlox that were introduced last year to a ton of interest and acclaim because of the unique and showy bloom shapes. The star shaped deep blue flowers are accented by a distinct white picotee edge.

93 | POINSETTIA ‘HOLLY’ | DUMMENWe have rarely featured poinsettias in our Spring Trial report, but we rarely see a poinsettia that is so completely different than anything else out there! ‘Holly’ featues unique, holly shaped bracts and a strong, columnar growth habit. Look for this unusual new beauty to be used in different applications than other poinsettias, including as a centerpiece in mixed seasonal planters.

94 | RUDBECKIA HIRTA ’RISING SUN CHESTNUT GOLD’ | GREEN FUSEThis is a stunning new intro, with huge blooms all summer long on tidy, compact, well mannered plants. It is a vegetatively propagated selection of R. hirta, with the best features of the species and the added bonus of continuous bloom with no seed set. It will bloom in short days, day length neutral, so it can be in bloom for spring programs, summer programs and fall programs. With a lot of new Rudbeck-ia hirtas coming out, this looks to be the best so far!

95 | SALVIA ‘BIG BLUE’ | PAN AMPanAm has got a real breakthrough with this exciting new salvia, all of the great attributes of Salvia ‘Mystic Spires Blue’, but grown from seed! Big, beautiful and ev-er-blooming, ‘Big Blue’ is a knock-out. It’s the first interspecific cross of S. longispi-cata and S. farinacea grown from seed. Will grow 36” tall by 18” wide, perfect as a stand alone or as the centerpiece in a large mixed container.

96 | SALVIA ‘ROCKIN’ FUCHSIA’| PROVEN WINNERSThis newest addition to PW’s line of Rockin’ salvia is a pollinator magnet! It features large fuchsia flowers with dark bracts above green foliage all summer long. As the flowers age, the bracts continue to stay dark. Works well with ‘Rockin Deep Purple’. They’ll grow 24-36” tall, and grow well in full sun to partial shade.

97 | SALVIA ‘AMANTE’ | JALDETY This exciting new introduction is a rose pink flowered form of the very popular Salvia ‘Amistad’. ‘Amante’ has many of the features that you’d expect from an S. guaranitica cross, excellent large, coarse, medium green foliage with flower spikes held well above the foliage and a strong, upright growth habit. Big and bold, grow-ing up to 48” tall, with profuse flowering from early summer into winter.

98 | SALVIA ‘ICON’ SERIES | DUMMEN Dummen is launching a new series of veg-etatively produced Salvia farinacea crosses, and these first two intros look great. Tidy compact habits with glossy, bright green foliage give them an excellent look for pots on a bench, growing in gardens or planting in raised containers. Flowers are in large clusters and held just above the foliage.

99 | SALVIA ‘VIBE IGNITION’ SERIES | PLANTHAVEN2 new additions to the Vibe Ignition series to go along with last year’s intro, ‘Ignition Purple’. Varieties in this series are crosses of S. greggii and another species of salvia, giving them more consistent rebloom in summer and more flexibility in the stems so they’ll ship better. ‘Fuchsia’, pictured, features brilliant rosy pink blooms, and ‘Crystal White’ is a pure white. Perfect for gallon production.

100 | SALVIA SPLENDENS ’GRANDSTAND RED-PINK LIPSTICK’ | GREEN FUSEThis vegetative splendens form of salvia is a real breathtaking bicolor that says “please take me home”. A sturdy plant with full flowers and a mature height of 18”. Grandstands hold up well in shipping and can be used in containers as well as in the landscape.

101 | SALVIA ‘SKYSCRAPER’ SERIES | SELECTAThis new series of salvias have the potential to be a real wow factor in gardens, if they ever get to a retail bench! Big, bold, dynamic, and with incredible flower power, the Skyscrapers will grow to 28” tall with an upright habit, flowering from late spring to fall. But they’ll grow fast and rangy in small containers and need a consistent pgr regimen to look good at retail. 3 colors available, ‘Purple’, ‘Pink’, and ‘Orange’.

102 | SALVIA ‘CATHEDRAL’ SERIES | GREEN FUSECathedrals are Green Fuse’s vegetatively produced series of S. farinacea, bloom-ing earlier and longer than any seed produced forms. 7 colors in the series, our team really liked the ‘Purple’ and the ‘Blue Bicolor’, pictured. Both stood out amongst the rest of the series. Sterile, so no plant energy wasted on setting seed, all of it goes into flower production. They will tolerate hot and humid conditions, plus they are early to flower. They have a garden height of 12” to 16”.

103 | STRAWBERRY ‘BERRIED TREASURE’ | PROVEN WINNERWhy not get 2-for-1, a flowering plant with fruit! A new line from Proven Win-ners that will be introduced in their Prov-en Harvest program. These 2 everbearing strawberries have showy semi-double red and pink flowers atop green leaves as the snack-size berries hang down below the leaves. These make great hanging baskets or in a container!

104 | THUNBERGIA ‘SUNNY SUSY AMBER STRIPES’ | BENARY+The newest addition to the popular Sunny Susy series of fast growing, strong vining thunbergias is ‘Amber Stripes’. The flowers are a striking amber-orange with a dark center and distinct yellow edges. They are extremely floriferous, and will start blooming very young. They will be perfect for large pyramids, trellises or in hanging baskets.

105 | TRIFOLIUM ‘4 LUCK RED STRIPES’ | GREEN FUSEA multicolored clover with a tight mounded canopy, leaves are two toned, dark green with splashes of red. The ‘4 Luck’ series has been bred to develop 4 leaves per petiole, a true lucky 4 leaf clover. Hardy to zone 4, and can be used in both annual and perennial mix containers.

106 | VERBENA ‘LANAI UPRIGHT TWISTER WATERCOLOR’ | SYNGENTAA very distinctive blend of colors; blue, white, burgundy, and lavender make up this new ‘Twister Watercolor’. Up-right, mounding habit that won’t split apart and holds up very well at retail and in the landscape. 107 | VERBENA ‘VANESSA’ SERIES | DANZIGERSeveral new additions to the Vanessa line of verbenas, with 2 outstanding bi-color varieties, ‘Bicolor Pink’, pictured, & ‘Bicol-or Purple’. Vanessas are powdery mildew resistant with excellent habits. Both of these new additions are trailing varieties, and hold an excellent shape through the season.

108 | VINCA MINOR ‘EVELYN’ | QUALITY CUTTINGSThis variegated selection of periwinkle forms a dense mass of small, glossy, creamy yellow margined green leaves. Produces striking pure white flowers in early spring. Makes an excellent perennial evergreen ground cover for shady loca-tions, as well as an attractive companion plant in annual mixed containers. Hardy to zone 4.

109 | VIOLA ‘DELTINI’ SERIES | SYNGENTAFrom the breeders of Delta pansies comes this 9 color series that has several quirky looking “Monkey Faced” flowers. Bred in the Netherlands under low light condi-tions, the Deltini series will enable growers

to extend the pansy and viola season. Unlike regular violas which abort their buds once the light levels drop, Deltinis will continue to produce flowers. Great for Southern and Western growers for winter flowering and early flowering in spring for Northern growers. Very programmable in packs, small pots, with near day neutral flowering. Pictured here is our favorite, ‘Honeybee’.

110 | ZEA (ORNAMENTAL CORN) ‘PINK ZEBRA’ | PAN AMThis new ornamental corn plant from PanAm offers more color and interest than previous intros, with the huge leaves high-lighted with red to pink leaf tips. A fascinating addition to large mixed planters, or as a stand alone in a mid-sized pot. Best color is achieved in full, bright sun.

111 | VINCA ‘TATTOO’ SERIES | PAN AMWow, this new series of vinca from PanAm is breath-taking! The most unique vinca on the market today, all 4 colors feature swirled patterns and large, dark eyes. Although not resistant to aerial phytophtera, these stand outs will be worth including for contain-

er gardening and accent plantings. Varieties offered are ‘Black Cherry’, ‘Tangerine’ (pictured above), ‘Raspberry’, and ‘Papaya’ (pictured below).
