Half the people in the world suffer from oral diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease, which can affect all the things we take for granted, like eating, speaking and smiling.

World Oral Health Day provides an important platform to change that. By coming together on a global scale, we can spread messages – loudly and consistently – about the importance of good oral health.

We want our collective efforts to lead to happier, healthier lives.

ABOUT WORLD ORAL HEALTH DAYCelebrated every year on 20 March, World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is the largest global awareness campaign on oral health. It’s an occasion when people around the world unite to put the spotlight on the immense burden caused by oral disease and the actions that can be taken to prevent and control it. The campaign reaches out to everyone:

The general public – we need people to care about their oral health.Oral health professionals – to educate patients on how they can prevent oral disease and look after their oral hygiene.Government and policymakers – to recognize the impact oral disease has on their economies and the well-being of their communities, and to drive change.

It was launched by FDI World Dental Federation in 2007; an organization that brings together the world of dentistry with the aim of achieving optimal oral health for everyone. Get involved in any way you can. Use this toolkit to help!

ORAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALSA pledge to inspire patients and communities to look after their oral health, to help keep people smiling their whole lives, to reach out and encourage more people to go to the dentist, and to educate on the mouth-body connection.

GOVERNMENT AND POLICYMAKERSA pledge to introduce a national oral health plan, to address the over-consumption of sugar, to integrate oral health into primary care, and ultimately, to safeguard the oral health of their citizens.

The 2020 campaign aims to use the transformative power of pledges to educate people on how to take care of their oral health, and empower them to create positive and lasting change.

Case studies to inspire you Read about some of the activities that were organised by our National and Student Dental Associations last year.

THE IRANIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS DISADVANTAGED COMMUNITIES The Iranian Dental Association (IDA) ran a series of educational workshops to commemorate WOHD. Hands-on demonstrations showed people how to brush and floss the right way, supported by oral health information to take away. Special attention and consideration was given to those from low-income backgrounds through the provision of free toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss, empowering them to take charge of their oral hygiene at home.

DENTAL STUDENTS FROM RUSSIA TAKE AN ORIGINAL APPROACH On WOHD, HCCM Russia (the Russian Association of Dental Students) organized public events in Ekaterinburg to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and its close relationship to oral health. The events aimed to highlight the link between mouth and body and the need to look after them both. The students also used an original approach to educate children about their oral health – through a live performance starring Caries Monsters, the Tooth Fairy and other characters.

OVER 9,000 PEOPLE PARTICIPATE IN PRAGUE The Czech Dental Chamber organized a number of events across 28 different locations in Prague. Workshops and lectures, and open days in dental hygienists offices reminded children, adults, parents and the elderly about the importance of good oral health and its connection to overall health. Regional TV and Czech radio did reportages from WOHD events and the Minister of Health attended the WOHD press conference.

LOTS OF PEOPLE ‘LIKE’ SUDAN’S CAMPAIGN The Sudanese Association of Dental Students (SADS) used social media to start conversations about oral health, and to promote and report on their WOHD activities. Their Facebook page was updated regularly throughout March and single posts received over a hundred likes, as well as multiple comments and shares. They raised awareness about good oral hygiene through free check-ups, interactive games and activities.

VIETNAM’S EFFORTS GET MAXIMUM PUBLICITY Throughout March, Vietnam Odonto-Stomatology Association (VOSA) organized free dental check-ups and basic treatment for children in primary schools, as well as free dental check-ups for members of the local community. VOSA’s WOHD activities featured prominently in local media, appearing on several different television channels. VOSA leadership were interviewed and television stations were present at large-scale WOHD events.

LADS GOES ON A ROAD TRIP ALL OVER LEBANON The Lebanese Association of Dental Students (LADS) started their celebrations on 20 February by promoting their events on Facebook and Instagram and posting a ‘Daily Dental Tip’. The LADS’ WOHD events were varied and widespread. They set up a diagnosis tent in a local square, organized oral health awareness sessions at Beirut Arab University, dropped into nurseries and schools with Toothie, visited a hospital for the elderly and those with special needs, and conducted an awareness session on oral health and pregnancy in a refugee camp.
