LSC FOOTBALLMidwestern State and Texas A&M-Commerce remain tied atop the Lone Star Conference standings with perfect 4-0 league marks. This week’s league action includes A&M-C at West Texas A&M, Eastern New Mexico at Tarleton State, and Texas A&M-Kingsville at Angelo State. MSU hosts Humboldt State in non-conference play. After playing six conference games apiece over the first nine weeks of an 11-week regular season, the league’s football teams will split into two brackets to conduct a two-week conference playoff. The conference champion and playoff seeding will be determined by regular season results. The top four teams (No. 4 at No. 1 and No. 3 at No. 2) comprise the championship bracket with Week 10 winners playing for the playoff title in Week 11, whereas Week 10 losers will meet for third place. The other half of the bracket includes the remaining three teams and Oklahoma Panhandle State with No. 5 at OPSU and No. 7 at No. 6 in Week 10. The 7-6 winner plays at No. 5 for fifth-place in Week 11, while the 6-7 loser hosts OPSU. LSC football teams are 23-17 overall this season. The squads are 9-1 combined versus the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Lakes Valley Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams, which are also in NCAA Super Regional Four.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEKOFFENSIVEVincent Johnson, Midwestern State University, FR, RB, Lubbock, Texas, Monterey HSJohnson rushed for a career-high 190 yards and two touchdowns to lead 12th-ranked Midwestern State to a 24-17 win over West Texas A&M Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The true freshman from Lubbock put the game away with an 84-yard scoring dash with 9:21 to play in the fourth quarter. Johnson’s rushing performance was the 11th best in program history and his 84-yard touchdown run was the sixth longest. Johnson leads the Mustangs with 467 yards and five touchdowns on the ground this season.

DEFENSIVEHarold Wills, Midwestern State University, SR, DE, Gainesville, Texas, Gainesville HSWills made a career-high 11 tackles with two sacks and two forced fumbles from his defensive end position to lead 12th-ranked Midwestern State to a 24-17 win over West Texas A&M Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The senior from Gainesville stripped WT quarterback Ethan Brinkley on the first series of the game then his strip of Buff running back Geremy Aldridge-Mitchell right before the end of the first half resulted in a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 14-3 halftime advantage.

SPECIAL TEAMSDavarus Shores, Texas A&M University - Commerce, JR, Coverage, Mesquite, Texas, Mesquite HSShores provided the game-winning punt block for the Lions in the third quarter. Shores broke through the line and blocked the punt which was picked up by Dionte Taylor for a touchdown. The score stood as the game winner in the No. 15 Lions 38-35 win over No. 16 Angelo State.

OTHER TOP PERFORMERS Geremy Alridge-Mitchell, West Texas A&M University, was a workhorse for the Buffs as he had a career-high 40 carries for 189 yards and one touchdown Saturday at No. 12 Midwestern State. He had 220 all-purpose yards in the game with 31 kick return yards on two returns. Alridge-Mitchell is fifth all-time in school history in rushing yards and fifth in career scoring. It was Alridge-Mitchell’s second-most rushing yards in a game of his career and second game of over 150 yards this season. His previous best of carries was 32. He leads the conference in rushing yards with 746 and a 149.2 average per game. He also leads the league in scoring with 60 points and a 12.0 per game. Joseph Sadler, Tarleton State University, who entered the game as the fourth running back on the depth chart, made himself known to the Tarleton faithful, Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, and the rest of the Lone Star Conference with a career performance for Tarleton as the junior running back lifted Tarleton to its first win of the season in Saturday’s South Texas thriller. Sadler carried the ball 18 times for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns to give Tarleton a spark on the ground. He became just the third different Texan to rush for over 100 yards since Sept. 28, 2013, joining Zach Henshaw and Collin Strahan. Sadler’s biggest run of the night came on fourth-and-one with 10:41 left in the game and Tarleton trailing 34-24. The junior from Devine broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run to pull Tarleton within a score at 34-31 and spark a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to lead the Texans to victory. In addition to his work on offense, Sadler also returned two kicks for 82 yards with a 66-yard return in the second quarter. Kamal Cass, Eastern New Mexico University, only received four carries in the Greyhounds’ win at Bacone College, but he made the most of them. With touchdown sprints of 43 and 54 yards, Cass registered 111 yards in the first quarter, to average 27.8 yards per carry. Richard Cooper, Texas A&M University - Commerce, continues to be the best running back in the conference after picking up his sixth straight 100-yard rushing game. Cooper carried the ball 23 times and picked up 101 yards on the ground. He added one catch for 22 yards. Cooper sat on 79 yards before scampering for 22 yards and a first down to seal the No. 15 A&M-Commerce win over No. 16 Angelo State. Cooper is ranked 8th in the NCAA in rushing yards per game averaging 138.7 yards per game despite splitting carries with another 100-yard rusher per game. Theo Wofford averages 101.7 yards per game making the Lions 1-of-3 teams in the NCAA with two backs averaging 100 yards.

Jordan Thomas, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, led Texas A&M-Kingsville with six receptions and 114 receiving yards. He also hauled in a 65-yard touchdown reception that gave the Javelinas a seven point lead at halftime. During the final drive of the game Thomas caught four passes, including one to keep the Hogs’ hopes alive for a comeback victory, totaling 43 yards. John Siliga, Angelo State University, led a defensive unit that held Texas A&M-Commerce to just 367 yards of total offense. The Rams held the Lions, who averaged 268 rushing yards per game, to 148 yards of rushing yards. Siliga was a key component making 10 total tackles He finished with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. The defense made 12.0 tackles for loss on the day. Brad Hardin, Eastern New Mexico University, paced the Eastern New Mexico University with eight tackles to lead a defensive effort which limited Bacone College to just 157 yards. He was a disruptive presence throughout the game, with 3.5 tackles for a loss, which included 2.5 sacks. Hardin forced a fumble and recovered two for touchdowns to become the first ENMU player in at least a decade with multiple defensive touchdowns in a game. Brandon Moore, Tarleton State University, came up big on the Texan defense that forced a stop in the final seconds of the game to deliver Tarleton’s first win of the season over Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night. With the Texans clinging to a 38-34 lead and Kingsville in the middle of a seven-play, 68-yard drive, Tarleton stood in against the Javelina offense working with a first-and-goal from the from seven-yard line. Quarterback Myles Carr escaped the pocket and ran for six yards, but Moore kept him out of the end zone with four seconds left. Kingsville fumbled the next snap as time expired and Tarleton claimed its first win of the season. Moore totaled eight tackles on the night, including the game-saving stop on the one-yard line. Of his eight tackles, 1.5 of them was behind the line of scrimmage for a total loss of eight yards. Iosia Iosia, West Texas A&M University, was all over the field for the Buffs Saturday at No. 12 Midwestern State. He had the team’s lone sack for five yards and 1.5 tackles for loss for six yards. He leads the team with 2.5 sacks this season and third in tackles for loss with four. Demarlon Morris, Texas A&M University - Commerce, contributed to the total team effort in the No. 15 Lions win over the No. 16 Rams aiding with a defensive touchdown. Morris picked off LSC Preseason Player of the Year Kyle Washington and scampered 26 yards for a touchdown. It was Morris’ second INT of his career and first in 2015. Isaac Arellano, Tarleton State University, was a star in the special teams game for Tarleton as the senior booted three punts for 133 yards and a 44.3 average in the Texans’ first of the season. In addition to his punting work, Arellano kicked off seven times for 431 total yards and an average of 61.0 yards per kickoff with two touchbacks. Felipe Parra, West Texas A&M University, had another strong outing punting for the Buffs against No. 12 Midwestern State. He had six punts for 243 yards and a 40.5 average with a long of 56 and one punt inside the 20. He leads the league in punting average at 41.4. Mitchell Henton, Midwestern State University, each of his four punts pinned West Texas A&M inside the 20-yard line as 12th-ranked Midwestern State rolled to 6-0 with a 24-17 win Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The sophomore from Dallas averaged 34 yards on four punts while angling to the short field contributing to the Buffs’ average starting field position at their own 18-yard line.

Julio De la Garza, Texas A&M University - Kingsville, was 2-for-2 kicking field goals and made all four of his PAT attempts. He opened the scoring on Saturday with a 27 yard field goal on Texas A&M-Kingsville’s first drive. A 38-yard field goal midway thru the third put the Javelinas in front by three. De la Garza became the first Hog kicker to make multiple field goals in a game since the 2013 season finale.

The Rams outgained TAMUC 470-376 ... ASU has only allowed .50 sacks per game which is No. 4 nationally and No. 3 nationally in defensive touchdowns with four on the season ... ASU scored a defensive touchdown for the second straight game ... The Rams are limiting teams to 22.5 points per game ... ASU will host Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

Eastern New Mexico The Eastern New Mexico University football team scored 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back en-route to a 77-14 win over Bacone. The 77 points was the highest total in the history of the Greyhound program. Kamal Cass scored on runs of 43 and 54 yards in the first quarter, to finish with 111 yards on just four carries. Brad Hardin led a standout defensive effort with eight tackles, had 2.5 sacks, forced a fumble and recovered two for touchdowns. The Hounds topped the 500-yard mark in the ground game for the first time since the 2007 season. This week, ENMU will visit Tarleton State.

Midwestern State Midwestern State improved to 6-0 for the third time in school history with a 24-17 win over West Texas A&M Saturday night at Memorial Stadium... MSU has won its first six games of the season for the first time since 2011 while also performing the feat in 1949.... The Mustangs extended their winning streak to six games for the sixth time in program history... Midwestern snapped a two-game skid to West Texas A&M beating the Buffs for the first time since 2012... MSU improved to 65-15 (.813) at Memorial Stadium since the start of the 2000 season... The Mustangs have won 29 of the last 32 games dating back to the beginning of the 2008 season... Midwestern established a 3-1 lead in the Highway 287 Challenge Cup series with West Texas A&M... The Mustangs clinched their 16th consecutive winning season which is tied with Mary Hardin Baylor for the most of any four-year scholarship program in Texas... Senior linebacker Daniel Laudermilk recorded his second game with at least 10 tackles this season finishing with 11 stops while recovering a fumble... Redshirt-freshman defensive end Alec DiValerio and junior defensive tackle Edgar Luna delivered season-high performances with nine and eight tackles, respectively... Senior safety Marqui Christian had seven tackles to move into fifth place on MSU’s all-time tackle chart with 255... Tarleton State Tarleton rallied from a deficit and won on a defensive stop to earn its first win of the season Saturday night in Kingsville. Joseph Sadler’s 100-yard rushing performance and a pair of interceptions from true freshmen, Tyrique Murray and Marcus Johnson highlighted some key plays while Le’Nard Meyers and Bubba Tandy combined to catch 12 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. Tarleton will return home next weekend for homecoming against Eastern New Mexico at 6 p.m. in Stephenville.

Texas A&M-Commerce The Lions moved up to No. 14 in the AFCA after the 38-35 win over then ranked No. 16 Angelo State. Richard Cooper continues his rushing supremacy. He turned in his fifth straight 100-yard performance with his 101 yards. The final 22 yards came on the Lions last real offensive play of the game, a 22-yard run that sealed the win. On the season, Cooper has taken 125 carries for 832 yards and six touchdowns. He averages 138.7 yards per game after entering the weekend the eighth in the NCAA in yards per game. Cooper needs just 168 more yards to become the first running back to surpass 1,000 yards in a season since Cliff Edwards ran for 1,041 yards in 2005. All told, Lion football has only seen a back run for a 1,000 yards 12 times and by nine different players in the program’s 96 seasons. Theo Wofford kept his season rushing average at 101.7 yards per game after his 82 yards on 12 carries Saturday. Wofford, who entered leading nation in yards per carry at 9.6, saw his average dip slightly to 9.1 yards per carry following the completion of Saturday’s game. Cooper and Wofford both average 100 yards rushing per game. The Lions are 1-of-3 teams with two running backs averaging 100 yards per game. Chris Smith picked off his team-high third pass of the season. Smith is now tied for the league lead in INTs. Demarlon Morris’ INT was his second of his career and his first career score. His last interception came at Stephen F. Austin on September 13, 2014. Stewart threw his 35th career touchdown with his 27-yard strike to Darby Smith. The Lions lead the LSC in scoring offense at 45.3 points per game.

Texas A&M-Kingsville Texas A&M-Kingsville fell to Tarleton State 38-34... Javelinas had a chance to win the game as time expired but a fumbled snap at the one-yard line prevented the opportunity...
