President’s MessageSome of my happiest memories are from time spent in the garden with my grandmother, father, children and now grandchildren. My journey down the garden path led me to Garden Club, Master Gardeners and writing a column about gardening for a newspaper. Gardening and TGC Inc. have given me countless hours of joy. Now that path has led me to the Presidency of TGC Inc.
In honor of Past President Nita Harmon (1959-61), who was instrumental in achieving the building of our state head-quarters, I have chosen to incorporate her theme. Her vision of TGC Inc. was: “To Preserve the Past, Serve the Present and Insure the Future.” Her vision of our organization is just as ap-propriate today as then.
We are facing many challenges as an organization after go-ing through a pandemic and the devastating ice storm Uri. My main goal as President will be to work with clubs to encourage them to go forward and thrive, adding new members to their rolls.
I will be promoting education through support of our NGC Inc. Schools and Scholarships. In addition to supporting education, I plan to encourage our members to support NGC’s Plant America – Play Outdoors and SCR’s Penny Pine. I will urge our members to reach out to our youth with the Smoky the Bear and Woodsy Owl posters.
Since I am from the city of Beeville in the County of Bee and the Great State of Texas, one of my main goals is to encourage our members to plant for our pollinators – native bees. Without bees, our agricultural industry and the food we eat would face dire circumstances.
We face many challenges but as an organization fi lled with talented members we can ac-complish anything!

South Central RegionI’m delighted to have many Texans serving on the SCR Board of Directors for the 2021-2023 term. Some are old friends; many are new friends. I’m especially thankful to the Texas dynamo, Linda Jean Brown! Her boundless energy and will-ingness to help are inspirational. So, a public thank you to Linda Jean! As the SCR Youth Awards Coordinator, I know Linda Jean will create renewed interest in our youth awards. I look forward to all we can do with our youth contests un-der her leadership! The focus at the beginning of our term is Scholarships! We kicked off our scholarship fundraiser “SCR Gardening Hero” in Oklahoma by honoring Donna Marsheck and Mary Jean Easterling. Since returning home from the OKG Convention we have fi ve new SCR Gardening Heroes from Arkansas that will be honored at our AFGC Convention in August and all will be honored in April 2022 at our SCR Convention in Galveston. I expect several more in Arkansas before August.
In every club and district there is someone who has provided outstanding service deserving honor. Someone who has worked unselfi shly to promote our goals, someone who invited you to become a member, mentored you, encouraged you. Please, Texas, help us to further horticultural education, conservation, and landscape design by participating in our “SCR Gardening Hero” eff ort to fund our scholarship! State garden clubs, districts, local clubs, or individuals may honor a person as an SCR Gardening Hero with a $100 donation to the SCR Scholarship fund. Each honoree will receive a certifi cate and recognition at state and region conventions, in the Communicator, SCR Website and Facebook Page. QUALIFICATIONS: All members of garden clubs in the four states of South-Central Region are eligible to be hon-ored as SCR Gardening Hero. Please send your tax-deductible donation of $100 to SCR Gar-dening Hero Chairman (Nancy Voyles, 2926 Hwy 75, Parkin, AR 72373) and include a paragraph describing the impact of the honoree. Checks should be made to SCR Scholarship Fund. The chairman will prepare the certifi cate and arrange for recognition at state and region conven-tions and SCR publications. You will fi nd the entry form in the April 2021 issue of “The SCR Communicator” or you may contact your state president or me to have the form emailed to you!

Whereas, Gardeners have a passion for nurturing the beauty and resources of the earth through the planting of seeds, the care of all plants and the riches of their efforts; and
Whereas, Gardeners seek to add beauty, splendor, fragrance and nutrition to our lives through the growing of herbs, vegetables, foliage and flowers; and
Whereas, Gardeners work to preserve our country's traditional spirit of independence and initiative through innovation and hard work; and
Whereas, Gardeners advocate the importance of all creatures, large and small, that share our world and their roles in a balanced and productive ecology; and
Whereas, Gardening furnishes a challenging and productive activity for our citizens, for those just learning as well as those having years of experience; and
Whereas, Gardening promotes a healthy lifestyle that lasts a lifetime, helps reduce stress from other areas of our life, teaches that rewards can come from diligent efforts; and
Whereas, Gardening enables members of Garden Clubs across the nation and the world to make a world of difference in the communities where they reside and work;
Now, Therefore Be It Resolved that in an effort to acknowledge the importance of Gardening and the numerous contributions of Gardeners, National Garden Clubs, Inc. designates the week of June 6-12 as National Garden Week.

Recommendations of the Board of Directors1. Move that we accept with gratitude the anonymous gift of two ring doorbells and an
indoor security camera, and approve the installation and use at headquarters. After the first year, approve $100 per year to maintain the recording service. Accepted

“The National Gardener” is one of your reading sources. If taking for credit or refreshing bring $5.00 so we can send your records to National. Bring your favorite snacks and beverages. Course is $150.00 payable to : Old Fort Parker. Inc. and may be mailed to the fort’s address: Old Fort Parker, Inc., 866 Park Road 35, Groesbeck, TX 76642. Pay $5 cash for credit to National for recording and you can pay at the fort. The Course is limited to 30 students. The rooms are located in Historic German Prisoner of WWII Barracks. The rooms have been remodeled of course and will have central air and heat. They are small with linen for the beds, pillows and towels. There are places for hot showers etc in the barracks. A break room is provided with coffee makers and microwave for hot tea, coffee or cocoa in the mornings in the barracks. The Visitor Center will serve the meals and provide the room for the lectures and workshops and is 200 yards or less from the barracks. A field trip is planned for source study. Please bring cool clothes and comfortable shoes for this school. You may call and bring your check with you if you like but please let us know as all meals are provided and need to be planned. We suggest you arrive on the 16th for an evening meal and a class and a workshop if time allows….which will be fun and educational. The morning of the 17th and 18th a breakfast will be served and the classes will start at 8:30 AM. Please plan to attend this fun and educational NGC School. Last minute registration will be fine…just call and let us know you are coming. Bring your favorite drinks and snacks. RV hookups are $20 per day, if you chose to go that route. We are going on a field trip to learn about and study the need to care for the environment. LOCATION: Historic Old Fort Parker is located 1 miles west of State Highway 14 on Park Road 35. State HWY 14 is the Highway between Groesbeck and Mexia.
If you come from Groesbeck on HWY 14 … Park Road 35 is four miles north of Groesbeck and is a left turn going west off State HWY 14.
If you are coming from Mexia on HWY 14…Park Road 35 is about 7 miles south of Mexia and is a right turn going west off State HWY 14.

Ongoing plans for a Fall Board Meeting have been developing over the past year and, with a new administration, everything is in place. President Gwen DeWitt launches “Bare Bones Fall Board Meeting” in place of our traditional Fall convention. With full conventions progres-sively getting more and more expensive, TGC has decided to follow NGC’s example with two diverse and efficient meetings to conduct business.

Lodging – Rooms have been blocked for Tuesday night for $120 (including breakfast) at Hilton Garden Inn/Fort Worth Medical Center, 912 Northton St., Fort Worth, Texas 76104 - (817-921-0788). Make individual reservations with the hotel (no later than April 18th to get this rate). (Rate will be honored an extra day for those of you who need to meet flight times).

Shutterbugs – Take Center StageBy Marlene Gillman
Do you have garden pictures stashed on your phone or camera disk waiting to be shared? Now is your chance to showcase your prize photos with other gardeners. District V, hosts for the TGC 2022 state convention in Austin, is planning a “Garden Photo Exposition” for the event. The purpose is twofold: First – we want a new take on showcasing our passion for gardening and almost everyone has pictures to share. Second – The entire show will be care-fully packed for later display at our headquarters when the botanic gardens have a special weekend event in which we wish to open our doors and participate. This is a great opportu-nity to show our horticulture, gardens, and special interests in a new and beautiful manner in our headquarters setting.
This is notice to take your cameras with you when you garden this summer and carefully sort your existing photo library for suitable entries “now” to be ready in the spring. The rules are simple:
1. Photo must be taken by the entrant.2. Print can be color or black and white.3. Print size must be 8 x 10 – matted (of your choice) to 10 x 12 4. Easels will be provided5. Entries will not be returned – make a copy
The categories are as follows:1. Exclusive to single horticulture specimen2. Container or window box of varied horticulture specimens3. Garden shots – home or public4. Yard art in garden setting5. Birds and Butterflies6. Pets and/or wildlife in the garden
This is a fun and inexpensive way to have a unique show with a second life at our head-quarters. The Killeen Garden Club is taking lead for this endeavor.
