The President’s MessageThe President’s Message

President’s Travel Schedule

“Today’s Challenge for Tomorrow’s Change”Here we are in a new century with change occurring at an

accelerating pace. Our challenge is to keep in step, not by reinventing ourselves, but by doing what we do best...offering to our communities the opportunities our organization has developed in education and service, in an environment of a common interest and fellowship.

Our founders, from an era of frugal economic realities, built a solid foundation for those who come after. I liken them to “string savers”, to which each subsequent president has wound her strand of time in continuity of achievements. It is the achievement of their worthy projects that I should like to be a part of this administration.

Let us continue Going Wild With Wildflowers which benefits the entire state; our outstanding outreach project Seeds For Life; embrace again Blue Star Highway Markers and Memorials; get

our garden clubs involved with Penny Pines for Texas Trees, and always be at the forefront of civic development.

Our greatest challenge is growing our Membership. Our goal is to increase members in clubs, to form new clubs, and to welcome more affiliates. We have in place much to fulfill this mission: schools to educate; programs to inspire; projects to build a lasting impact. This is what we wish to share with new members - the joy of fellowship in building with a purpose.

With our Website in operation we must continue to increase communication pathways, so that our members have at their command the resource information they seek; challenge our membership to make use of this wonderful window of opportunity.

The new century challenges us to develop personnel. We must recognize the abilities and encourage the leadership qualities of our members; mentor those who are interested in guiding Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. in a changing tomorrow.

The South Central Region Unified Project is “Beautify Our World With Trees”, and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. President’s major project is “Patriotic Trees”. There is an opportunity for civic development in a matching grant program “Let Freedom Ring” through National Garden Clubs Inc....look for more details in this issue.

In keeping with these patriotic themes, I have chosen as a project a Blue Star Memorial Marker on the grounds at Headquarters.

Consider the challenge of tomorrow’s change...what are we going to do when we get to Mars?....Plant a TREE!

Let us begin our great adventure.

Her chosen projects are of interest to, and for the benefit of, communities. She states, “the stronger our foundation is the stronger will be that which we choose to build upon it.”Under her leadership she is promoting the “Let Freedom Ring” project, offering matching grants for developing Freedom Gardens, planting Presidential Trees, and initiating new or refurbishing Blue Star Memorial Markers, and other creative ways garden clubs may honor those who serve. Through the decades NGC has had tree-planting projects; this term it will be the planting of “Patriotic

About this IssueUntil a few years ago, I rarely took the time to read the editor’s comments

in magazines. But now I find myself flipping there first; I would not miss it. I learn about the issue and am surprised at how many times I might have only glanced at the pictures had the editor not mentioned a writer, subject or specific article. To those of you who are reading this page, thank you! During my two years as managing editor, the LSG will honor a different

District with each issue. We will explore the area, meet the Director and State Officer and learn a little about the many achievements of its

members and individual garden clubs. This issue celebrates District III, the site of the Fall Convention in Tyler. I hope you will discover many

reasons to visit District III when attending the meeting. Don’t miss the wonderful accomplishments of the members of the Jesse Wise Allen Garden Club in Jefferson (pg 10) or the history of the 2005 Garden Club of the Year, Azalea Garden Club and their Civic Development Project (pg 9). Susan Combs was delighted to contribute an article again this month. She had no idea we were featuring Tyler and District III when she wrote about Texas Antique Roses (pg 25). How timely! Mike Shoup, owner of the Antique Rose Emporium, was kind enough to supply the photograph for the cover. Check out the 2005 Spring Convention and Flower Show (pg 20) then turn to the Fall Convention registration form included on page 23 to join the fun. The Board Roster for 2005-2007 is included in this issue. You may want to keep the entire issue or pull out the yellow roster pages for easy reference. In addition, you will find all the NGC, Inc. and SCR contest and award winners listed for 2004, new state Life Members, and recommendations and by-law changes approved at Spring Convention. Future issues will include more horticulture tips and a book or two you might enjoy adding to your library. We will continue to include articles and pictures about clubs throughout the state in each issue. I would like to thank the wonderful Garden Club ladies that contributed articles to make this issue possible. Thank you also to all who sent cards, prayers and good wishes to me the last two months. I am deeply touched by your concern.

Happy Gardening!!HAVE YOU PAID YOUR DUES? THEY WERE DUE APRIL 1!!

Celebrating District IIIWhich TGC, Inc. District contains the “Bluebird Capital of Texas” and is home to

the state’s largest Ginkgo Biloba tree? Of course, it is District III.The East Texas Piney Woods area encompasses 41 counties extending from Texarkana

to Huntsville. This long narrow district - divided into three zones (North, Central and South), is comprised of 64 Clubs, 6 Councils and 7 Affiliates. Its rich history is rooted in the antebellum Republic of Texas. Near Huntsville is the giant 67 foot high concrete and steel likeness of the first President and Governor, Sam Houston. It’s the tallest statue of an American hero in the world.

Who has not swooned like a Southern Belle over the sight of a snowstorm of dogwoods blooming in the woods, or the brilliant colors of azaleas head high, or the acres and acres of roses in Tyler, the “Rose Capital of the World”?

Being rich in bio-diversity, this District has led garden club members in promoting environmental issues such as recycling and proper solid waste disposal, and offering of Environmental Studies Schools for Garden Club members at Camp Tyler. District III has championed youth education by sponsoring Camp Tyler and its environmental programs for elementary school children, by organizing garden clubs for youth, and by awarding scholarships to college students majoring in horticulture and other allied subjects.

Oh, and the Bluebird Capital of Texas is Wills Point and the largest Ginkgo tree is in New Boston.

Sandee Walters, TGC Vice-President YouthAs a “Military Brat” Sandee Walters lived many places during her growing-up years, but

no matter where they lived her mother always had a flower garden. Even when they lived in a high-rise apartment building in Madrid, Spain with balconies, Mrs. Walters had her flowers in containers and she passed that love of gardening on to Sandee.

Sandee’s garden club participation began over 20 years ago when she joined the Civic Garden Club in Kilgore. Over the years she has served three years as Club President, two years as Vice President: Programs, two years as Vice President: Yearbook, three years as Treasurer and as Flower Show Chairman. Sandee has also served as Central Zone Director and

most recently, as District III Director. Linda Whetsell was the first speaker on floral design that she ever heard and her love for design began with that program. Sandee is now a National Flower Show Judge and loves the opportunity to travel and meet with other garden clubbers. She is also a member of Azalea Garden Club in Tyler.

Sandee’s husband, Mark, is a retired rose-grower and they have two wonderful daughters and sons-in-law and three TERRIFIC grand children, with another on the way, whom they try to spend as much time with as possible. The grand children already know what it is like to grow vegetables as they help with the planting and harvesting. The oldest granddaughter helps Sandee with the freezing and canning. Sandee is currently taking a Gardening Study Course, is going to Environmental School and just completed a Design Seminar at Texas A&M. Sandee’s years as a member of garden clubs has given her great pleasure and opportunities to meet wonderful friends.

TGC, Inc. Civic Development Award

Carnegie Library ProjectThe Carnegie Library of Tyler celebrated its

100 year birthday in October 2004. The Carnegie Library in Tyler is one of twelve of the original libraries built in the State of Texas by Andrew Carnegie. The property is maintained by the Smith County Historical Society. As is the case with many non-profit organizations, funds were limited and the landscape maintenance at the Carnegie Library was tabled as more important matters arose.

Azalea Garden Club of Tyler voted to adopt the Carnegie Library as a new project for the 2004-2005 garden club year and to continue it as an ongoing project. Azalea Garden Club found the existing landscaping to be overgrown with bare flower beds on the north side of the building. This year Azalea Garden Club allotted $250 for the planting of the Carnegie Library’s bare flower beds with the local Smith County Master Gardeners matching the donation.

Seven Azalea Garden Club members met on October 4, 2004 to perform the overdue maintenance. It was determined that the landscaping was overgrown and needed immediate pruning. One of the committee members volunteered her lawn maintenance crew to provide the necessary muscle. Azalea Garden Club members amended the soil in the flower beds and planted variegated privet, miniature nandina, and variegated monkey grass. For color, the committee chose ornamental kale, dianthus and snapdragons. The initial phase

of the landscape project was completed by the Carnegie Library’s Centennial celebration held October 7-10, 2004. Regular watering schedules were planned by the Azalea Garden Club members and fertilization and seasonal planting will be provided as needed.

Achievements of the Hemphill Garden Club

The Hemphill Garden Club won the National Garden Club’s Jesse M. Connor Award for Environmental Education. They have established a comprehensive program on the environment for four 3rd grade classes. Throughout the year members and guest speakers give programs on birds, littering and recycling, wildflowers, bees, and honey production and flowering trees. Students have assignments and hands-on projects including a field trip to go fishing in the Sabine National Forrest. Each year Hemphill Garden Club raises money to fund an annual bus trip to Hodges Gardens.

In the spring of 2005, Hemphill Garden Club teamed up with TxDOT to relandscape the Sabine County “Gateway” entrance to the state on Texas Highway 21. The Club had previously established a Blue Star Memorial Marker at the site and has been responsible for its maintenance. The State and the Hemphill Garden Club now propose to add a flag pole, picnic tables, new trees and shrubs and a lit display case to acquaint visitors with the historic sites in Sabine County.

Johanna Deal Taylor, District III DirectorAfter working as a microbiologist in New York and Boston, Johanna

moved to Texas and became a fourth generation enthusiast of Jersey cows and gardening. At present, Johanna and her brothers oversee a dairy operation following the principles of sustainable agriculture.

Johanna began garden clubbing in Mt. Vernon, Texas, in 1988. With the encouragement of mentors including Dottie Sivess, the late Fannie Maxton

and Frances Ellis, and past TGC Presidents, Linda Whetsell and Ina Brundrette, she first became a Flower Show Judge in 1996 and Northern Zone Director in 1999. Our educational schools have helped her to focus her interest on sustainable agriculture and the environment so vital to the earth’s health and our own.

Recently installed as District III Director, Johanna has selected “Sowing and Growing for the Future” as her theme for the year. Being Director will give Johanna the chance to enjoy the small towns and back roads of Texas. She is so proud to be District III Director, as you can see by reading this issue! Please join her in Jefferson for the Gardening Study School, November 7 and 8, 2005.

What’s doing in Jefferson with The Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club

In her memoirs, Mrs. Elizabeth Dannelly wrote, “On Thursday March 16, 1939, thirty-five ladies met and organized a garden club. They named it for Jessie Allen Wise, who had died exactly a year before, a lady very much involved in all kinds of civic and community affairs. Dues were 10 cents and in the treasury was 30 cents.” This was the inauspicious start of what today is a vibrant garden club of 60 members with deep roots in the community of Jefferson, a town of only 2100 people.

The Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club members started their historic restoration projects in 1953 with the purchase of the Jay Gould railroad car. Known as The Atlanta, the car was moved to its present site by the ladies in 1954 and was awarded a historical marker in 1995. However, the ladies took on a

project of much larger dimensions when they purchased The Excelsior House Hotel. The Hotel, which had changed hands many times since being built in 1852, had fallen into such a state of disrepair that the banks who held notes on the property considered selling it for the property value and demolishing the old building. It was then that the members of The Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, 35 ladies from Jefferson, recognized an opportunity and their responsibility to history and sought to purchase the hotel. They borrowed money to pay off the notes, took out personal loans to begin the restoration process and dedicated two years and thousands of hours of personal labor to returning The Excelsior House Hotel to its past glory. Individual families adopted each guest room and decorated them in period style.

The Dallas Morning News headline said it well, “Clubwomen Tackle Man Size Job” and they did it well. In 1991 Texas Monthly wrote, “...It is a yin-yang experience, a perfect balance of male and female energies. For men it offers thick walls, strong water pressure, firm mattresses, remote control television, and scrambled eggs served with quarter-inch-thick pieces of country ham...Conversely it is crammed with antiques that only a woman could

love...and certain irresistible details such as tall pale-pink vases once owned by Lady Bird Johnson’s parents...and - incidentally - a nicely tended garden”

After their success with the Excelsior Hotel, The ladies of the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club went on to purchase the Ruth Lester House, formerly a Catholic convent and school and the adjoining Jefferson Playhouse, which had been a Jewish synagogue. The Ruth Lester House is now open for tours during the club’s highly successful Pilgrimage and the Jefferson Playhouse is used for re-enactments of the famous Diamond Bessie murder trial. However, this year the trial had to be moved because the club has started an ambitious $250,000 renovation project with a $3,000 grant from the National Historic Preservation Trust and a $7,500 grant from the Texas Historical Commission. In addition to restoring the 1860 playhouse, the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club is committed to creating a Community Playhouse Performing Arts Education Center that will serve Jefferson and East Texas.

Jefferson’s historic Pilgrimage, organized by the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club, takes place the last weekend in April and includes not only tours of the many historic buildings owned by the club, but other historic houses in the area. There is a re-enactment of a civil war battle, a parade (led this year by Miss Teen USA April Ford, Parade Grand Marshal), a quilt show, annual art exhibition and sales, a crafts fair, and Period Artisans.

The Excelsior House Hotel, the second longest continually operating hotel in Texas, is also the center of many garden club activities, including their Standard Flower Show. They continue to reach out to the whole community by inviting them to join their activities. This year, Mrs. Johnson, a Garden Club member and local kindergarten teacher, asked her class to make animals out of fruits and vegetable to enter in the flower show. Radishes became mice, a banana peel became an octopus and a lemon made a great pig. Its members are the source of many of the recipes in the Excelsior House Cookbook published by the garden club. The club has a scholarship program and gives awards for community beautification of gardens around town.

Today, the current membership shows true fidelity and bears honorable witness to their founding members by endeavoring to continue in the task of community historic restoration and preservation in Jefferson.

Azalea Garden Club – Gold Club of the YearAzalea Garden Club of Tyler was organized in 1941. Azalea has continued to

be a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., South Central Region, Texas Garden Clubs, Inc and District III since its federation in 1942. At the beginning of this year there were 27 active members and 9 associate members. Azalea Garden Club has a rich garden history with Azalea members, Ina Brundrett and Linda Whetsell, having served as Presidents of TGC, Inc. Member Sandee Walters was installed at the 2005 Spring Convention as VP of Youth and Dottie Sivess was installed as District III’s Trustee for Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. Azalea member Ina Brundrett was the founder of the Azalea Garden at Tyler Junior College, the beginning of the Tyler Junior College Botanical Gardens. Linda Whetsell, Ina Brundrett, Linda Dyer and Naomi Marksbury serve on the advisory committee for the Tyler Junior College Botanical Gardens.

Over the years Azalea Garden Club has sponsored nine garden clubs, one of which is a youth garden club. These sponsorships date from 1952 to 1999, with plans for a new sponsorship this coming year. Among Azalea members are Flower Show Judges, Landscape Design Consultants, Gardening Consultants and Environmental Consultants. Azalea Garden Club is a member of the Tyler Area Council of Garden Clubs. A number of members are also Master Gardeners. Azalea Garden Club was awarded the Garden Club of the Year 2004-2005 at the TGC Spring Convention in Addison. The presiding President is Ann Brown.

Azalea members are currently involved in a long-term landscaping project at the Carnegie Library in Tyler, which was awarded the TGC, Inc. Civic Development Award for 2004. Azalea Garden Club established a butterfly garden at Camp Tyler, participates in the Annual Texas Rose Festival and the Tyler Area Council of Garden Clubs annual Standard Flower Show held in conjunction with the Texas Rose Festival. In addition, Azalea Garden Club hosts its own Standard Flower Show and Guest Day Tea each year.

Pionette Garden Club – Silver Club of the Year Pionette Garden Club in Palestine was federated in 1953. They are a Silver Club with 30 active members, 5 associates and one sustainer. Pionette Garden Club is committed to the community with involvement in 14 different youth garden clubs in Anderson County, including the Boy Scouts and the Dogwood 4-H Junior Club. Other community projects include landscaping public areas, teaching Garden Therapy at a local nursing home, litter pick up along their adopted section of the highway and tree planting on Arbor Day. Pionette has a yearly pilgrimage and monthly meetings with recent topics that include butterfly gardening, making herb angels, plant sharing and a Garden Gadget Exchange. Fundraisers include a yearly flower show and a craft auction. They are an outstanding example of a Silver Garden Club and their involvement in the community.

2005 Spring Convention Highlights”CHANGING TIMES” A Standard Flower Show

Texas Judges Council, formed in 2001 and consisting of 54 members, sponsored their first state wide show in conjunction with the TGC, Inc.’s Spring Convention at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Addison. The two day show opened on April 19 with designs, horticulture exhibits, and special exhibits.

The Special Exhibits Division included Artistic Crafts and Youth and Educational Exhibits. Special Exhibits consisted of hats, packages and pictures – with exhibitors using fresh or dried plant material. Edith Burris of Alice won the Artistic Craft Award for her “Wal-Mart” hat. Youth Exhibits featured the winning environmental and forestry posters from participating schools across the state. Educational Exhibits provided the public and club members with information on TGC, Inc. state projects: Camp Tyler Foundation, Elmwood Community, Environmental Schools, ARK (Animal Rehabilitation Keep), and Seeds for Life. In addition, other special exhibits provided by the districts to enhance the show on water preservation, litter control and floor designs, to name a few.

The Design Division included table designs, both functional and exhibition, miniature and standard pedestal designs, standard designs staged on hotel credenzas, floor designs and small designs staged on stands. From the 48 designs, Mary Lou Hakansson of Houston and Mary Hammar of Donna won the two Designer Choice Awards, Anna Archer of Nederland won the Petite Award, and Carolyn Scott of Fort Worth, a newly accredited flower show judge, won the Table Artistry Award.

There were 262 entries in the Horticulture Division. Idalia Aguilar of Bryan received the Award of Horticulture Excellence and Jackie LaTaste of Dallas won the Arboreal Award. Awards of Merit were conferred on Idalia Aguilar, Anna Archer, Mary Ganter and presiding TGC, Inc. President Linda Whetsell of Tyler. Mary Ganter of Garland won the Sweepstakes Award with 33 blue ribbons.

Judges from Arkansas and the ten districts in Texas judged the show and the evaluating panel of judges qualified it to apply for a National Flower Show Achievement Award. Mary Ann Moreland

TEXAS ANTIQUE ROSES-

VIBRANT AT ANY AGE

By Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs

In Texas, we love our hybrid roses and we’re not shy about showing them off. In fact, it’s practically a display of state pride to grow them. We work hard landscaping our gardens throughout the spring. We delve and dig, till and toil, to make sure our roses shine when the time is right. But then there’s our reliable and dependable friend - the antique, or “Old Rose” as they’re sometimes called. Antique roses are true survivors. They persist and have been persisting on Texas soil for many years. Like the spirit of a true Texan, they take whatever is thrown their way, toss it off and keep on going. The American Rose Society defines “old” or antique roses as those varieties introduced before the introduction of the first hybrid tea rose in l867. They’re versatile, long-living and proven over time. These strong disease resistant varieties helped usher in the era of modern roses. They are the roses that we see flourishing in old cemeteries, around abandoned homesteads and along old fencerows without the benefits of care, fertilization, water, pruning, pampering or spraying. They often date from the 1800s, when settlers from Europe brought many of their best roses to remind them of home. They have withstood droughts, floods, hurricanes and insect infestation. Once their root system is established, many antique roses live to be hundreds of years old. They climb, ramble, trail and form large and small bushes. They may happily settle into containers, used as the backbone for a garden

bed or massed together for color in the foreground. Any way you choose to arrange them, the antique rose is a welcome, nostalgic and valuable member of any Texas garden. Besides living long and carefree lives, antique roses are well known for their fragrant aroma. The beauty of antique roses is that they embellish the architecture and landscape of any garden without a lot of fuss. The following list of antique roses is what Mike Shoup with the Antique Rose Emporium in Brenham refers to as his “Tried and True” varieties. “In my many years of growing roses, these varieties in Texas have never failed me,” he said. “They usually provide color interest and fragrance all season long.”

Hedge or Specimen Roses: Old Blush, Mutabilis, Mrs. B. R. Cant, Penelope, Maggie or Belinda’s Dream.Container or Low Border Roses: The Fairy, Perle d’Or, Martha Gonzales, Gruss an Aachen, Marie Pavie or Cecile Brunner.Climbers: New Dawn, Climbing Pinkie, Buff Beauty, Lamarque or Zephirine Drouhin.

With their vivid colors, rich scent, pleasant form and historic touch, antique roses are a delightful addition to a Texas garden. They’re great to pick and share with friends and family, and they’re never a maintenance burden, as many gardeners will attest. The easiest way to “grow Texan” is to GO TEXAN. Look for the distinctive GO TEXAN logo that helps you spot Texas agricultural products at a glance when visiting your local nursery or garden center. Another easy way to find Texas grown roses from a local grower is to contact the Texas Department of Agriculture at www.gotexan.org or call (877)99GO-TEX for more information.

THINK AWARDS Now is the time to start planning which awards your club will be applying for this awards year, January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2005. Get the jump on it, set up your committees and be ahead of the awards clock. Clubs that apply for awards find new enthusiasm in club members, more interest in the goals of TGC, Inc and NGC, Inc.; learning about awards is interesting, and you will find so many are so simple to apply for. You have been doing your projects every year without knowing you could be eligible for an award and recognition for your work. I will cite some examples:

A Non-Competitive award:TGC Club Service Award

This award measures garden related service in keeping with NGC, Inc. objectives to the community, by a member garden club. No binder, no table of contents or Summary.Just write up a short letter explaining your work and fill out the form provided in the awards brochure on page 15 (Awards 2003, 2004 revise). That’s it! Send to your District Awards Chairman to arrive by November 1.

Book ListingsDon’t forget these categories, another way to get your club to participate in awards. All clubs like to be recognized for the works they do. 100% listing of members in the Friendship Book at Headquarters will get you an award. Just send a list (in duplicate) along with a check for $1.00 per member to TGC Headquarters to be listed in the state book. A simple step to have your garden club in the news of awards. Don’t forget the Gold and Silver Books, also Presidents Book. Easy to do things, to get your club name in print. (Page 15 Awards Brochure).

Competitive awards Arbor Day is a biggie, Nearly every garden club I know has some kind of Arbor Day Observance. They just never apply for that Arbor Day Award, which if you placed, would advance to South Central Region for another award! This award is sub-divided by your club rating, Gold, Silver, Bronze or Green. Also by the number of members in your club. No struggling against big competitors, just throw your hat in the ring with folks your own size.TGC Butterfly Garden Award, everyone has a butterfly garden, the Presidents’ Reports are full of them, but how about awards? N-43 NGC Butterfly Award: With just a slight emphasis difference, the TGC Butterfly Award could be entered in this category to receive a National Award.

Preparing a Book of Evidence Don’t let this old bugaboo scare you off. There are fresh new helps and hints for preparing the Book of Evidence, all available on the NGC website, www.gardenclub.org. Great helpful hints right down to the nitty gritty, like what kind of glue to use on backs of photos. It chops that old black BOE right down to size. Nothing intimidating left to it. Just read, line for line and do exactly what the directions say and you will be ready to go in no time at all. The Awards Brochure makes some pretty interesting reading, and you find out a lot about the things garden clubs do throughout the year. It will answer many questions that have come up at your own club meetings. Every garden club should have one or more Award Brochures. They are available from TGC Headquarters $3.00 each.

National Garden Club Projects“Patriotic Trees”

As a result of Mary Louise Michie’s project, more than 100 million trees have been planted. Successive national presidents have continued the project aiding our environment and beautifying our community with blooming trees.

Continuing this emphasis, NGC President, Kitty Larkin, has initiated a Patriotic Tree Planting Project. During 2005-07, clubs are asked to plant trees to honor patriotic citizens and events. Clubs may honor police, firefighters, armed forces, veterans, et al. Install or rededicate a Blue Star Memorial Marker. Celebrate on holidays.

Network with other civic groups and involve children to make the event more meaningful. Secure publicity to share your pride. A Scrapbook will be created for NGC Headquarters in St. Louis. Send a brief summary and photo/s of your event to: Sandy Manthrope, 712 Highspire Road, Glenmoore, PA 19343-1142

Grant ProgramTHE PRINCIPAL FINANCIAL GROUPGrant Program - “Let Freedom Ring”A $200,000 Community Outreach Commitment

“Let Freedom Ring” is a grant program funded by The Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc. in conjunction with National Garden Clubs, Inc. It will feature projects for the benefit of communities honoring those who serve our country. Grants will be awarded up to $3000 each and will require matching funds. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2005.

The project must be new or a restoration of an existing site. Suggested projects are developing Freedom Gardens at historic sites; planting Presidential Trees; initiating new or refurbishing Blue Star Memorial markers, etc. These projects lend themselves well to VA hospitals, cemeteries, military establishments, city hall, fire house, schools, and highway/by-ways, many of which will be of historic value.

Clubs may apply for grant money with a simple request not to exceed three pages. Request must explain members’ involvement, impact on the community, future maintenance or monitoring, and include itemized projected income and expenses. The application is simple but specific. Each District Director has application requirements or write to TGC Grants/Let Freedom Ring Chairman: Barbara Baker, 4104 Harlanwood Drive, Fort Worth 76109 or [email protected]

Heifer Project InternationalAgroecology Grant: Working in Harmony with Nature

In their small Guatemala village, Jacinto and his family are making reforestation their life’s work. “We plant five [Heifer] trees for every one we take up,” He’s learned, through Heifer’s environmental training, that “nature will feed us, but not unless we feed nature.” In a remote Philippine village farmers who once relied on the slash and burn system of farming, are now planting fruit, vegetables and timber seedlings.

Around the world, Heifer is training thousands of small farmers in sustainable, long-term agriculture practices: planting fields of algorroba trees to reforest a desert in Peru, restoring and protecting wetlands and forests in Zimbabwe, conserving native forests in Nepal.

Thanks to a matching grant towards this Agroecolory Initiative, your club’s donation can help train twice as many farmers as before. Please report your donation to TGC President Carol Russell for her report.
