Upon Westminster BridgeWilliam Wordsworth, 1770 - 1850
Earth has not anything to show more fair:Dull would he be of soul who could pass byA sight so touching in its majesty:This City now doth like a garment wear
The beauty of the morning: silent, bare,Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lieOpen unto the fields, and to the sky,All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
Never did sun more beautifully steepIn his first splendour valley, rock, or hill;Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
The river glideth at his own sweet will:Dear God! the very houses seem asleep; And all that mighty heart is lying still!

These photographs were taken over a three year period for a book commis-sioned by Rizzoli NY.This is a small selection of my favourite images. Many people gave advice and help in terms of ideas and access to buildings from strategic rooftops to little known interiors. However, many were taken from street level some planned and prepared for and some by serendipity.Following the path of the river, the viewer journeys across London, from the bucolic West to the postmodern industrial East—from the beautiful villas and gardens of Notting Hill,
Bedford Square and Georgian London to the historic monuments of Greenwich and the new city rising in the docklands. These photographs capture every aspect of London, from the distinctive beauty of the Royal parks to the formal splendor of Whitehall, and from the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament to the streetscapes of Spitalfields unchanged for centuries.
