Employment opportunities and job roles in the media sector

The purpose of this workbook is to get you to understand different job roles, different ways of working and opportunities for professional development. You will have to explain different terms, give opinions and source relevant additional information in order to help you comprehensively explain employment opportunities and job roles in the media sector with reference to elucidated examples.

This first section considers different ways of working. You should use information from the lecture, your own experiences and further research to help you answer each question. Wherever possible, you should use specific and detailed examples. This will help you achieve a higher grade and also give you a deeper understanding of the subject.

Describe the following different types of employment and some of their advantages and disadvantages:Full time

This type of employment tends to be secure and continuous, occupying most of someone’s available time throughout the week. People who work full time will be working for around 40 hours per week within the United Kingdom; a standard work-week normally consists of five eight-hour long days and this totals to 40 hours. The employee would get two days off; these two days are usually Saturday and Sunday. There are some advantages to working in this way. First of all, the employee would receive a large payment of money in a regular manner. This ensures that the employee is able to pay for things like car/house insurance successfully. In a full time job in the media, the company would promote the media product for the employee thus meaning less effort in that regard. There is also a high chance of promotion for the employee.

There are also disadvantages, however. There is a chance of the employee being dismissed from their job for a specific reason i.e. fired and this could make the employee redundant. The long work hours increase the chances of the employee experiencing fatigue. This could result in problems because the employee would struggle to continue doing their job.Part time

‘Part Time’ is a form of employment that carries far less hours than a full-time job does per week. People who work part-time tend to work in shifts, usually at specific times during the day, rather than work for long periods of time. There is no specific definition for someone who works part-time in regard to the number of hours, however it can be from 1 hour per week and is usually less than 35 hours. In the latter case, the employee would be working full-time if his/her work exceeds 35 hours. The main reasons for someone wanting a part-time job are the desire to earn extra money, aiming to work for

less hours, or because they are struggling to find a job that is full-time. The advantages of working part-time are that the employee will not be treated any less favourably compared to someone who is working full-time, the employee’s job is secure and continuous, and that he/she receives a regular wage. A disadvantage of working part-time is no guaranteed shifts for workers. For example, the employee might have to work in the evenings, during afternoons and even late at night. Because the shifts are rotational in this manner, it can be difficult for the employee to predict when they have to work and this could interfere with other events e.g. coursework and appointments.Freelance

If someone is working ‘freelance’, they are employed by many different companies and required to work on specific projects/assignments on a regular basis. Freelance workers tend to be represented by a company or agency of some kind, however sometimes they can be self-employed i.e. working for themselves and use professional websites for work. This is a good example of working independently; this means that someone chooses to work on their own rather than work collaboratively with other people on a media product. The advantages of being self-employed, and therefore working in an independent manner, are that the employee is his/her own boss and that he/she can work freely without any form of interruption from fellow workers. The employee is also able to manage his/her own project, expanding on it and making drastic alterations to it whenever they please. There are disadvantages as well; the employee is only left with his/her own opinion and tends to focus away from the demands of the customers; therefore, the media product could suffer if the employee is working on their own. The possible reason why there is a lack of focus on audience needs is because there is a greater amount of work to complete, as well as responsibilities for ensuring the media product reflects professional standards at the time of its completion. This means more work for the employee.

There would be a lack of resources for the employee; this could make it difficult for them to ensure their work is of a high quality. There is a good chance the work could be fairly daunting for the employee due to being lonely in the workplace e.g. not having anyone to talk to or share ideas with others. Lastly, the employee has to rely solely on his/her own skills rather than having easy access to support from a group working on the same product.Voluntary

Voluntary work is defined as work that is completed and maintained without any form of payment for the employee. Employees simply volunteer to do the work, hence the name ‘voluntary work’ and act at their own free will. They are not forced to do so by law. Instead, they willingly take on a task as well as a wide range of responsibilities on their own accord. The reason why people might want to do voluntary work is because they desire to improve their own CV or gain experience regarding the world of work. This can be beneficial because it could greatly influence someone’s decision as to what kind of job they like; they can also determine what they deem as too difficult for them regarding work. This will most likely make it easy for someone to find a full-time job, as well as to identify their skills regarding the workplace. The advantages of voluntary work are that the employee is provided with the opportunity to meet a wide range of new people, access resources and boost their own social skills. Voluntary work can also provide career experience i.e. people will be able to try out new careers without being required to make any long-term commitments. Another advantage is that the employee can learn

job skills that would prove valuable when searching for full-time employment. The disadvantages of voluntary work are that it could be time-consuming, as well as the fact that it might not appeal to everyone. Voluntary work can take up a much larger amount of time than one expects; it could interfere with any events the employee may have, as well as get in the way of certain activities and other forms of work e.g. education. This could be quite stressful for the employee. Voluntary work also requires a great deal of skill and effort that not everyone possesses. The fact that there is often no payment for those who take part can be considered a disadvantage as well.

Describe shift work. What does it entail and what types of media job might require it?‘Shift work’ is defined as an employment practice that is designed to comprise recurring periods of time during the day in which different groups of workers perform their own duties. It is often abbreviated as work that is 24/7 i.e. all the time. Workers are required to rotate through set periods during the day; the primary aim of this practice is to keep a specific company operating. The individual’s work hours tend to follow a specific pattern, although these might change. The benefit of shift work is that people do not have to work all day and therefore will have plenty of time regarding things like seeing their families or taking part in other activities. For the company, shift work requires full use of all 24 hours of the clock each day and 7 days a week to ensure things continue to run smoothly. Employers will be required to maximise the potential of the employment practice; this is generally accomplished through use of experimentation regarding each shift. This means that employers will always attempt something different in case something goes wrong e.g. a series of events that disrupt the company’s work pattern.

As for the employee, the work could necessitate night shifts (i.e. working at night) which can be considered a disadvantage due to the employee experiencing stress or fatigue which may hinder their progress whilst working. When it comes to the media, a wide range of jobs can require shift work, especially those that require repetitive tasks. For example, production environments such as film companies and video game development studios operate 24/7 every week due to the desire to create professional and successful media products. To ensure things continue to run smoothly regarding the development of a product, the company must operate for a full 24 hours every day; this is accomplished by utilizing workers in rotation throughout the day.

A permanent contract is one where an individual has been hired for a position that doesn’t have a pre-determined time limit i.e. there is no end date. Their job tends to be secure and continuous and they receive regular payment from their employer; the employer tends to pay the employee directly. Also, if an employer desires to dismiss an employee within the workplace, they would need a good reason to do so if the position is permanent. A permanent contract must include the employee’s name, description of employee’s job and the date of employment.Advantages and disadvantages

There are many advantages regarding a permanent contract. The fact that the contract doesn’t expire (hence the name ‘permanent’) can be considered beneficial for the employee, mainly because their job will be secure and stable. In turn, the performance of the employee at work will be enhanced as their job security is improved. Employees will

also be provided with increased employment benefits including bonuses such as health insurance, pay raises and holiday pay which will benefit the employee. They are also entitled to making plans for retirement which will be sponsored by the company; the reason for this is because the company will have an obligation to provide a permanent employee with certain rights. Another advantage would be progression; employees are more likely to move up to more senior roles mainly due to the fact that they are able to build up their reputation over time; in the case of permanent employees, a significant amount of time is provided for them to build up their reputation.

The disadvantages of a permanent contract are a sense of ‘confinement’ within the workplace, as well as the repetitive and therefore dreary, tedious and uneventful nature of the jobs. Most of the time, those who are permanent employees will be required to see the same people every day, as well as endure the same activities and complete the exact same kind of work. Jobs of this type are therefore monotonous i.e. they do not change. This can be quite stressful and even mind-numbing for the employee. The nature of the job might prompt the employee to leave, however there is a good chance that he/she will find there are notice periods set by their employer; these can prevent them from leaving whenever they want to and force them to complete a certain amount of hours before their ‘leaving date’ as provided by the company. This can be considered a disadvantage because the employee can miss out on a great deal of opportunities elsewhere (in regard to other forms of work) and is also forced to remain in a place in which they do not want to work in anymore. The hours set by the employer can have a negative impact on the social hours of the employee, especially in regard to family and hanging out with friends.

A temporary contract is one where employees are provided for a position that is not secure and continuous (as opposed to a permanent contract) and in which they are provided with a fixed end-date by their employer. A contract of this type only requires the worker to remain in a specific job position for a set amount of time whilst fulfilling the necessary functions of regular employees. The hiring process for temporary positions is almost exactly the same as that of permanent positions; as accomplished through placement of adverts, resumes, interviews etc. Temporary employees can work for a varied amount of time for a company i.e. they could work for as little as a few weeks, months or even years. Temporary contracts can eventually lead to a full-time, permanent job for the employee and have also become increasingly popular as of recent times.Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of a temporary contract are opportunities to explore for the employee, a chance to meet new people and gain experience, as well as increased flexibility within any job the employee could have. Certain types of individuals, especially young people, should be able to explore a wide range of career paths, thus gaining insight as to how a variety of jobs work so that they can decide what kind of job they want. Temporary employees (often referred to as ‘Temps’) will get the opportunity to work in multiple environments and be assigned to specific job roles. They will be able to expand on their own skillset and realise which career path is worth following e.g. a permanent position. Each job role allows the employee to meet a wide range of colleagues, clients, managers etc. and build relationships with people; this would be beneficial for the employee because it could increase their confidence in regard to work. The fact that the employee has the option to simply decide which job role is unsuitable for them and therefore choose to avoid a specific career path can be considered an advantage

because they are in full control of what they want to do in the future.

The disadvantages of a temporary contract are inconsistency in regard to the availability of job roles and restricted benefits for the worker. Temps will find it difficult to determine how much money they will be able to earn, as well as manage their commitments within their jobs. There is a good chance that the employee could end up in a job they dislike and one that is also irrelevant to their own future goals. As opposed to permanent employees, temporary workers will have fewer benefits in regard to sick and holiday pay; this is entirely up to the employer and can be considered a disadvantage because it limits the options for the employee.

What is multiskilling and which skills could you combine together?Multiskilling is defined as the training of an employee within a wide range of different skillsets so that they can gain a variety of skills and knowledge which could be useful for working on more than one project in a specific job, or multiple jobs that require different skills. The employee will be able to work on a number of different tasks in a flexible manner; the main advantage of multiskilling is increased productivity for the company, mainly due to the fact that they do not have to hire additional personnel. Instead, they can train one person to do various jobs in the workplace. An employee could combine a wide range of skills together; a good example of multiskilling in the media industry can be found within a production company of any kind e.g. film or video games. For example, a video game designer/developer could specialize in multiple aspects of the video games industry, including graphics, audio, coding etc. in an entrepreneurial manner i.e. they attempt to make profits during their business venture. Multiple job roles of this kind could benefit the employee because they could build up their own skills and gain a positive reputation within the workplace.

What is casual work? Who does it benefit the most? What are some of the arguments against casual work?Casual employment is a type of work in which the employee is required to supply services on an irregular or flexible basis as they are employed only when and if needed; there are no expectations for the employee in particular in regard to continuing employment. In other words, a job role of this nature is not guaranteed; it does not require the employee to work for a set number of hours each week like a full-time or part-time job would. Instead, the employee is to be available only when required by his/her employer. This form of work could benefit the employer more than it benefits the employee, mainly because the employer could minimize any responsibilities they have for their employees whilst maximising the obligations which require the employee to work regularly for them. The reason for this is because both the employer and employee have no obligations to each other in between periods of work.

There are many arguments about casual work, especially in regard to employees. First of all, the fact that casual employees do not have the same rights and obligations as permanent or temporary employees; therefore, it can be difficult to determine whether or not the relationship between the employer and employee is ongoing. Other arguments against casual work concern the fact that it is unfair as employees are denied paid holiday entitlements and sick leave, and that a wide range of hazards are present including long gaps between periods of work, short call-in times, and inability to predict income or save up to buy a house. This greatly reduces the options for the employee.

Explain hourly paid work. Find a job which pays by the hour to help you with your explanation.An hourly employee is a worker who is paid on an hourly basis for their services during each week. The amount of money the employee is paid per week depends on whether or not their job is full-time or part-time. In the case of a full-time job, the employee would earn up to £40 in relation to the number of hours they work per week (a full-time job requires the employee to work for up to 40 hours each week). Those paid on an hourly basis are paid for the actual hours they work, as opposed to a fixed salary which is typically on a monthly basis but expressed as an annual sum of money. Depending on rotated shifts or changes in schedule, the hours per week might fluctuate i.e. differ in an irregular way, especially in relation to the number of hours each day. Therefore, the wages the employee receives can vary each week.

A good example of a job which pays by the hour in relation to the media industry is a marketing manager; this role involves directing an organization that promotes or sells products and services. People with jobs like these tend to earn almost £40 per hour, primarily due to the nature of their job; they are, in essence, executives for a marketing organization and can therefore be considered as administrative and professional workers. Job roles like this tend to be advertised with high salaries with the primary purpose of attracting the right candidate i.e. the ideal person who intends to apply for the job.

What is Piecework? What do employers need to be careful about when employing someone this way?‘Piecework’ is defined as any form of work that is paid for according to the quality of a finished product or the amount of products created rather than the time spent making it. A worker is usually paid a fixed amount of money for each unit that is produced regardless of how much time it has taken, however the employer will estimate the amount of time it takes for the employee to complete their product. The possible reason for this might be to monitor the skills of the employee at work. Piecework generally involves the employee creating something in his/her own time e.g. a media product and sending it back to the company for pay.

When it comes to piecework, employers can employ a wide range of tactics in regard to the manner in which the employee is paid. For example, the employee could be paid by the hour or receive an annual salary (paid per month). Piece rate pay jobs are very common in writing, editing, data entry and the creation of products, all of which apply to the media industry. Employers need to take care when it comes to examining the quality of the product; they will monitor the cost and viability of production, variable skill level and how fast the workers can produce a product. The reason why employers need to take care is because there could be physical conditions in regard to the employee, including job stress, risks and inability to work with peers and/or family members. All of these could hinder the quality of the finished product. Employees may also be less welcoming to performance pay i.e. the manner in which they are paid in relation to how well they have performed on the creation of their product within a given time frame.

This section is concerned with finding work. You will have an idea of the sort of job you might like to do in the future. Keeping a specific job role or industry in mind when

completing these questions will help you provide more detailed and focussed answers. Starting to think about a specific area of employment at this stage will help you in later sections of the workbook.

Why would you use careers guidance? Provide the names of at least 2 organisations which can help people plan their careers.Careers Guidance is defined as advice and information that is provided for individuals, especially in regard to assisting them with making decisions about any kind of career they desire to pursue in the future. Advice and information of this type tends to help young individuals plan their future, as well as gain insight as to what job role they could end up in. One might decide to use careers guidance so that they can understand their own needs relating to work, as well as obtain job information and resources which could be a big help to them. Another reason for using careers guidance would be to reduce the costs of conducting job research which could also be time-consuming as well as expensive. This option also seems like a simple solution for obtaining information about job roles compared to conducting research that could result in someone finding information that is irrelevant and therefore useless.

A good example of an organization that provides careers guidance is ISCO Membership, which is an organization that offers independent, professional higher education and career guidance to young individuals e.g. school students, as well as careers events and courses. Such events could allow students to gain insight into the world of work and get the chance to speak to industry experts (in relation to the media) so that they can obtain knowledge regarding the nature of a job role they desire. Another good example is the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) which offers careers guidance and development, as well as placement opportunities. This organization clearly seeks to assist young individuals as it offers financial support and accurate advice on things like employment, education, training etc. Students who desire to apply for university whilst not possessing the qualifications needed might also find that they are able to find help from this organization.

What is a trade fair?A trade fair is an event that is organized with the purpose of allowing multiple companies e.g. media companies to showcase their products and/or services to prospective clients, as well as interact with customers and study the activities of rival companies. This can be considered an advantage because it allows media companies to keep up with current market trends. At trade fairs, it is also a good opportunity for companies to publicly exhibit their media products.

Which trade fairs could you attend to help you with your career? How could they help you? Be specific here to help you comprehensively explain.Trade fairs tend to be massive and stage-set, consisting of a large number of manufacturers for specific products as well as customers who get the chance to interact with them. In relation to the film/video games sectors, trade fairs would allow for production companies to assess the opinions of clients and/or customers, determine their own market potential, initiate partnerships and joint ventures etc. All of these could influence the manner in which a company creates media products in relation to the preferences of the customers, current market trends etc. For example, a video game

developer company could interact with related companies (i.e. the games they create belong to the same genre) so that they can share ideas or compare the overall quality of their products. A good example of a trade fair related to video games is Gamescom, which is based in Germany and held annually. It is primarily utilized by video game developers so that they can showcase the qualities of their products to a large group of people. In the year 2014, the games Destiny (developed by Bungie and High Moon Studios), Battlefield: Hardline (developed by Electronic Arts) and Assassin’s Creed: Unity (developed by Ubisoft) were all presented in an in-depth manner, with previews of their graphics and gameplay.

I could attend an event such as this one to gain a great deal of insight regarding competition within the video games sector, as well as the manner in which production companies present their products to a massive number of people e.g. demonstrating aspects of gameplay and how they managed to create it. Trade fairs such as Gamescom would be very useful because they are well-established and tend to provide a great deal of information about how production works in not only the video games sector, but within any sector e.g. film or TV.

What could some advantages and disadvantages be to using the national press to look for work?The ‘national press’ refers to newspapers that concern events which are taking place across the country; specific job roles could be advertised within the national press. There are many advantages of someone using the national press to look for work. People would most likely come across a wide range of goods and services that businesses advertise on newspapers. This means that there could be a lot of options for the employee, and the main reason why companies tend to advertise goods and services via newspapers is because it is easy for them to gain the attention of communities (as well as people seeking employment) in this manner. There is a good chance that someone seeking employment would easily be able to find multiple advertisements for job roles, as well as a specific section within the newspaper regarding the type of career they would like to pursue e.g. media. This means that using the national press can be quite reliable.

There are also many disadvantages of using the national press to look for work. As of recent times, more and more people prefer to use the internet or E-Newspapers to look for work rather than study print publications. Therefore, using print publications to search for employment could be considered very unpopular or even obsolete. Another disadvantage is that magazines only come out once a month (or every few months), therefore it could take a long time for someone to investigate employment (using print media) even further if they have found nothing useful on a specific issue.

What trade press publications could you use to help you find work? Would this be a better option than using the national press? Explain your answer using detailed examples.Trade Press Publications are magazines that target those working within a specific industry e.g. the media. People could use specific forms of Media Trade Magazines to obtain knowledge regarding job roles within a sector such as film. For example, a motion-picture industry trade magazine such as Film Journal International could entice someone that is aiming to pursue a career in film production, backstage arts etc. The

main reason for this is because magazines of this type tend to cover all aspects of the production process (pre-production, production, post-production etc.) as well as trends within the industry, theatre technology and advertising. Film Journal International can be considered a trade press publication because it targets a specific group of people and concerns job roles in not only a certain industry, but also a specific sector.

Another trade press publication to consider for seeking employment could be Backstage Magazine, a brand aimed primarily at people who desire to pursue a career in the film industry, specifically in regard to casting and performing arts. People might find this publication useful because it offers insight as to how actors, singers, dancers etc. perform, and also covers the film sector from the perspective of writers, directors and agents.

In my opinion, using specific trade press publications to seek employment within the media industry is advantageous compared to using the national press to look for work. The reason for this is because the former tends to cover specific job roles and communicate information relating to the ideal job role one would like to pursue, rather than requiring someone to seek information that is only present within only one or two sections of an entire magazine. In other words, national press publications tend to advertise a wide range of job roles for different industries rather than communicate information in great detail. In a trade press publication, one would most likely find a lot of information and gain a lot of insight regarding the nature of a job role in particular.

What would be a good way of keeping track of and in touch with your personal contacts? How could this help you when looking for work?Keeping track of personal contacts i.e. staying in touch with people can be considered ideal in regard to seeking employment. A good way to keep in touch with people could be through social media; social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter enable people to not only communicate with each other easily, but also to keep track of certain events e.g. trade fairs which are ideal events for helping someone to choose a career path. Social media sites tend to advertise events such as these. As of recent times, a lot of people use social media to interact with each other, therefore it can be considered advantageous compared to other platforms e.g. Yelp, Pinterest and Skype, even though these platforms also allow people to stay in touch with family/friends as well as share interests.

Social networking sites can easily help people to find work because they advertise events to attend which concern jobs. Because people can interact with family and friends on these sites, they can obtain advice, ideas and information about job events. This proves that Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. allow interaction with people who will get out of their way (e.g. relatives, close friends or former acquaintances) so that they can provide help, thus ensuring that someone looking for work does not have to attend a specific event in which they would feel uncertain about obtaining work (primarily because they have not been able to obtain useful advice prior to attending the event or due to the fact that they might not trust people they do not know).

What is networking and how could it be useful to you?Networking is defined as the exchange of information and services amongst individuals; it tends to occur within a group of associates and the most likely purpose of it is to

establish productive relationships in regard to employment and business. Usually, a group of acquaintances is established and then kept active through regular communication between the group members. Networking could be useful for employment because it could enable someone looking for work to keep in touch with personal contacts and communicate with them on a regular basis. Another reason why it can be considered useful is because it facilitates the exchange of ideas amongst those that have common interests e.g. a specific career in mind. It also helps people to establish professional relationships with each other; these have the potential to boost one’s confidence when it comes to looking for work because it implies a strong sense of sophistication which can increase his/her employment prospects i.e. they would be likely to succeed in getting a job.

Explain word of mouth as a way of getting work. Is this a reliable method for obtaining work?Word of mouth (or WOM for short) is a form of advertising that primarily involves spreading information which regards things like local news, job events and the skills of a specific employee which are considered remarkable enough to be referenced. For example, if people are consistently using words like ‘highly recommend’ in regard to an employee based on his/her sophistication in the workplace, it means that people in the workplace are becoming aware of what an employee is capable of through the communication of others. This shows that ‘word of mouth’ has the potential to represent job candidates in a positive light and ensure that employers are aware of people’s skills regarding a specific job role. Therefore, word of mouth can be considered a reliable method for obtaining work; it allows for great reach and information has the potential to spread quickly. It can also increase awareness of job events and allow people to build strong relationships with each other, as well as get recommendations from people they do not even know yet e.g. employers for a specific job role.

This next section requires you to do further research in to your chosen career. Creativeskillset.org is a fantastic resource which will help you learn about the qualifications, skills and experience you need to gain to work in industry. It also gives detailed overviews and case studies, to help you understand what each job really involves.

It will help you find other useful sources of information from details on unions, trade websites and publications to job adverts. You should investigate your chosen job role or sector and sum up the skills and qualifications you need to do that job as well as fully investigating what it involves.

What job role would you like? Explain your reasons? What kind of job is it (creative, technical, editorial etc.)?The type of job role I desire is a role in the production process of films; particularly post-production which involves things like editing, making adjustments and enhancing the visual qualities of a work after shooting it. A specific job role which intrigues me is an editor, which is a person who collaborates with the director to craft the overall film. The

director is primarily responsible for the visualization and design of a film in regard to style and structure. It is the director’s responsibility to carry out duties across the aspects of the production process and hopefully achieve their developed vision for their film as a result. What skills will you need for that job?To do this job, a wide range of different skills are required for the employee. The employee is required to possess a great deal of knowledge regarding the production process of films as well as a good imagination, excellent communication skills and developed visual awareness which could all prove useful, especially in a role which involves working alongside the director. The employee is also required to have patience, pay attention to detail and be able to work under pressure. Good organisational skills are required. The hours are often quite long and unsociable i.e. the job could involve working night shifts. This is somewhat similar to a part-time job I have had in the past which also involved unsociable hours (working late) and I think that a job role such as an editor would be ideal for me because I am quite creative. I am also able to complete work for long hours and under pressure, and I am reliable and manage my time really well.

Summarise what is involved when doing this job.The editor is mainly responsible for working closely with the director during the post-production process of films which involves assembling footage from production together to form the final product. The editor also directs and oversees the addition of the soundtrack, sound effects etc. into the final edit alongside the director. The job generally involves selecting the best takes from production and assembling them together in a sophisticated way so that a coherent flow of action is established and an adrenaline-evoking sequence is provided. In turn, these scenes are assembled into what is initially referred to as an Assembly Edit (also referred to as the ‘Director’s Cut’) which will become the final film if approved by the producers.

This course could allow someone hoping to obtain a job role within Film and TV to gain a great deal of experience in regard to the production design and art direction for the film and television media sectors. Specific areas such as production, set and event design, graphic design etc. are explored throughout this course and candidates will be able to develop their own skills. They will also receive the opportunity to progress through a wide range of different subjects including working from script, creating promotional music videos and working on close-up design detail. If I attended this course, there could be a good chance of obtaining a job role within the film industry because the course itself has strong links to the industry, with a wide range of industry contacts.

Therefore, the course can also offer work experience on major film and TV productions within the U.K. For example, students in the past have even worked on the production process of films such as Skyfall (2012) and TV programmes such as Doctor Who, EastEnders, Downtown Abbey etc. This shows that work experience has the potential to provide students with even greater levels of experience which could help them to obtain a professional job role in the future.

The institution that I would attend is Nottingham Trent University, and the aforementioned course would last for three years. The entry requirements for the course are a BTEC Extended Diploma, as well as Grade C or above in both GCSE English and Maths. If I attended this course, I would be assessed solely on the quality of my coursework. At the end of each module, I would be awarded a grade band e.g. 1st, 2.1 or 2.2. This shows that the level of qualification would be equivalent to that of a Level 3 course.

BA (HONS) Film and Television Production

This course covers a wide range of industry sectors including broadcast television, advertising, film production and communications. Students on this course get the opportunity to edit, learn about the technology used for the production of films and TV programmes, and be introduced to film and media theory and practice. In my opinion, this shows that students who take part in this course will be able to gain insight as to how the production process works in regard to film and TV, therefore there is a good

chance that they would be able to obtain a job role within the industry. The course also has ties with specific industries e.g. ITV, the BBC and independent producers i.e. producers who rely solely on themselves rather than another company. Students will also get the opportunity to attend events and master classes at the national media museum in Bradford which is partnered with the Digital Media Working Academy. This academy provides students with access to work experience within the film and TV sector; this tends to involve paid work.

The institution that I would attend for this course is the University of Bradford. The course lasts for three years and allows students taking part to develop their skills through experience so that they can eventually progress to a highly skilled, professional job role within the industry in the future. There are no specific subject requirements e.g. A Levels or BTEC Extended Diplomas, however a Grade C in GCSE English and Maths are required. Students who have worked on the course have eventually gone to work for organizations such as the BBC, Sky, Channel Four etc. By the end of the course, students can obtain a Degree in film and television, production management, editing or studio and location management.

Where could you look for work experience?There are many options in regard to where I could look for work experience. The internet can be considered the ideal place to seek information about how to obtain an internship or work experience because there are many sites concerned with experience within the media industry to investigate. First of all, I could apply for a work experience program for an Editor within the television sector (source: https://careers.sky.com/starting-out/work-experience-opportunities/media-work-experience). The main reason why I would seek experience within this sector is because it involves TV presenting, specifically in regard to sports. This shows that I would be able to temporarily work in a place which concerns the broadcasting of important events and therefore gain insight as to much responsibility I could be provided with whilst working within the industry in the future. This source can be considered useful because it offers a wide range of options regarding job roles within the broadcasting of sports like football, cricket and rugby which could intrigue a wide range of people. Although this isn’t necessarily the career I have in mind, I could still gain a great deal of experience within the Film and TV sector which could allow me to build up my own skills and increase my chances of succeeding in the future.

Where would you like to do work experience? How would you go about applying?If I had the option, I would prefer to do work experience in a place not too far from where I live. A specific place I have in mind is the University of Bradford, which offers ‘different placement and internship options’ (source: http://www.bradford.ac.uk/business/student-and-graduate-talent/placements/) as well as schemes for both graduates and undergraduates. These could prove beneficial for future employees who can get the opportunity to prepare for the world of work, primarily because the University helps them to plan their future. The main reason why I would like to do work experience at a university is because there are usually placements available and these can offer experience for someone who wishes to apply. If I applied for work experience at a university, I would get the opportunity to put my own academic skills from previous courses into practice. Also, the University of Bradford offers courses related to the film and TV industry e.g. Digital Film and Television Production or Media and Film Studies.

I would be able to apply for a placement by submitting an internship proposal. This would enable me to not only introduce my own academic skills, but also provide an overview of my past learning experiences as well as any experience regarding work, volunteering etc. I think that submitting an internship proposal to a University is an ideal way to apply for work experience because it would enable me to prove that I have the skills which are necessary for working in a temporary job role, as well as a passionate interest for the subject of Film and Media Studies through providing an overview of my past learning experience.

As well as looking at your industry skills, employers want people who are able to work efficiently and communicate effectively. In this section, you should evaluate

What grades do employers normally like to see people have for GCSE Maths and English?When it comes to employment, employers would usually like to see people who are highly skilled in both Maths and English above any other subject (source: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-23925033). According to this source, people are required to have attained a Grade C in GCSE English and Maths in order to progress to specific job roles in the future. Although there are some jobs that do not require a GCSE Grade C in Maths and English, there are still many employers who demand that employees have managed to attain the grade. Most jobs today (including those within the film industry) require a minimum C Grade for both subjects. The main reason for this is because those who are lacking in terms of literacy and numeracy skills can’t be considered as suitable for employment. This proves that it is essential to have skills of this type when applying for a job role.

Why is it important to have good functional skills?Good functional skills can be considered very important when it comes to employment, mainly because they enable employees to operate in a confident, effective and independent manner. This is beneficial because it ensures that the employee will be able to cope with things like long, unsociable hours e.g. evenings and weekends which can be quite daunting, as well as common changes in the routine of work i.e. the established sequence of actions that are followed by the employees in the workplace. With academic abilities of this type, the employee will be able to apply Maths, English and basic I.T. skills to real life contexts in the industry. Good functional skills can also prove beneficial even outside of the workplace; for example, in regard to managing bills and finances for college, university etc. Employees are also more likely to be ready for the world of work rather than face competition due to a lack of basic skills. In this case, it could be difficult for the employee to find work in the future or pursue a career successfully.

Are there any areas of Maths, English or basic I.T skills that you need to work on?I think that my own literacy has progressed to a high level over the years; I am able to complete written work to a high standard and use things like punctuation and descriptive techniques effectively. Therefore, my own skills regarding literacy do not need improving in any way and I am confident that having skills of this type can increase the chances of progressing to professional job roles and pursuing careers in the future, primarily due to my ability to analyse specific pieces of work in an efficient manner and communicate any creative ideas I have. I consider my basic I.T. skills i.e. using computers and software to create, process and exchange various forms of data as fairly professional, especially when it comes to creating and editing things like magazine covers, film clips and fine art images. However, I do think that my skills regarding computers and certain forms of software could improve because I can struggle on computers at times e.g. when it comes to using programs or software that I am not familiar with. I could accomplish this by trying to adapt my own skills on different editing programs e.g. forms of Adobe software. Having more knowledge of computers and software could benefit me because I could be able to progress to higher job roles, especially as an editor, if I am highly skilled on multiple forms of software.

My numeracy skills clearly need improving. I have not yet attained a Grade C in GCSE Maths yet, and this is important in regard to applying for jobs in the future. I understand that employers nowadays demand for basic numeracy skills as well as literacy skills and that these are somewhat essential in the workplace. To improve, I should continue to revise specific areas of maths that I struggle with. Doing so will hopefully build up my skills even further and increase my chances of securing a professional job role or pursuing the career I want in the future.

How reliable, committed and efficient are you? Give examples when you have demonstrated some of these qualities. Do you need to improve any of these areas?I think that I am highly reliable, especially when it comes to being provided with a great deal of responsibility regarding things like practical work, equipment and computer software. I consider myself as sensible and able to be trusted when it comes to practical work such as production whilst working on the current Level 3 Creative Media Course; I think that I am unlikely to struggle and I am able to plan ahead. This shows that I always bear in mind that things will not always go according to plan, and I usually find myself able to deal with certain problems. I will always make attempts to put them right if I can. I also think that I am dedicated to the aspects of the course, I possess an interest in things like the production and development of films, television programmes etc. which are specific media sectors. I find that I am intrigued by any opportunities I get to show off my own skills through practical work; good examples include the creation of a music video and the creation of a pixelated video game.

These are two topics that have been covered on this course so far; I was able to put a great deal of effort into these topics and the overall quality of my completed music video and creations on Adobe Photoshop do well to imply this. I am always well-organized and tend to work in a productive and methodical way; the quality of my own work tends to reflect my own attitude in this manner, specifically in regard to the quality of coursework I have completed in the past. Personally, I do not feel as if I need to improve on these areas any further.

Attendance and punctuality are very important. What was your attendance and punctuality like at school? If your figures were good, how will you maintain them? If your figures need to improve, what steps do you need to take to improve those figures? Be specific in your answers.During my school years, I was fairly well-organized and hardworking in many of my subjects. I was always able to turn up to lessons on time and I did not have any unauthorized absences whatsoever e.g. not phoning in if I couldn’t come to school due to being ill. I found that I was able to complete any homework I received to the best of my ability and hand it in on time, and I always put a lot of effort into any form of practical work I was required to complete. Good examples of subjects in which there was a fair amount of practical work were Additional Science, Food Technology and Media Studies. I always tried my very best and I considered practical work to be enjoyable in many ways. For example, a piece of practical work I had to complete in Media was the creation of a print advertisement for a new brand of a specific product e.g. a new form of deodorant such as Lynx which was the one I chose. In many of my subjects e.g. English, Media, History, Core Science, Media and Food Technology, my figures were good, especially in regard to things like attendance and progress. To maintain these figures, I should continue to complete all assignments to the best of my ability in the future,

especially because my basic skills e.g. literacy have improved to a high extent.

In some subjects, however, my figures needed to improve. For example, in Mathematics I was not always handing in homework on time and my general commitment to the subject was considered minimal acceptable at the time (as stated in some of my reports in the past). This has had a slightly negative impact on my basic skills, especially in terms of numeracy. To improve, I should ensure that I complete all assignments that I am provided with to ensure that I can obtain the ideal grade. Following this, there could be a good chance that I will eventually progress to obtaining a professional job role within the industry.

How important do you think self presentation is during an interview?Self-presentation is defined as the manner in which someone e.g. an employee acts and responds to specific situations, as well as deal with them successfully. This tends to mirror the expectations and preferences of clients and colleagues within the workplace, as well as employers for future jobs. It can also apply to the requirements of a course at university. I think that self-presentation can be a good way to imply one’s attitude and even determine what opinions the employer will have solely through the appearance and behaviour of the employee. If an employee makes an attempt to appear sophisticated or describe themselves in a positive way (e.g. in regard to their skills, qualifications and past experiences), there is a good chance that they could intrigue their employer during an interview. My opinion is that describing oneself in a positive way (not only through communication but also trying to convey it through the manner in which they act) during an interview can significantly increase the chances of pleasing their employer and getting recommendations within the workplace. It can also create a positive influence in regard to the employee i.e. an impact on their character and their behaviour.

I think that it is also important to bear in mind that one should not exaggerate or overemphasize any positive aspects e.g. their own intelligence whilst simultaneously placing insufficient emphasis on any negative aspects, thus making an attempt to put forward only the positives. The reason for this is because it can mislead employers and one could create a negative impression of themselves if they act in a nonchalant manner i.e. not displaying anxiety or enthusiasm at all.

Can you think of a time when you contributed to a group project? What was the project? What role did you take and how successful do you think you were?A good example of a time when I contributed to a group project was during the Level 2 Creative Media Course (2014-15) prior to the current Level 3 Course. On the previous course, the class was tasked with creating a 5 minute-long short film of any genre and with no dialogue, although music and sound effects were allowed. Filming had to take place primarily on the college site. I think that I made a significant contribution to the group project (we were placed into groups at the time). Although there were only two of us in one group, we both took on responsibilities of our own and helped each other to complete the initial planning documentation as well as the production itself. In different roles, we also worked together on the editing process. I considered my role within the project as the director; I was responsible for ensuring that all the aspects of the storyboard (during the planning stages) were captured for the final film, as well as transferring all the footage onto a computer and attempting to assemble the clips.

However, we both provided ideas of our own regarding how the footage would be put together and what soundtracks to use to provide tension and suspense. We also provided ideas regarding effects which could be used to evoke adrenaline within the viewer. Due to complications that arose during filming, we weren’t able to finish the short film; however we did manage to film the beginning scene which was a crucial aspect. Despite the missing scenes from the film, the two of us were still able to make use of the footage we had managed to obtain. This shows that despite the fact that things did not go according to plan, we did not let this impede with the progress we had already made. Therefore, I consider this group project to have been quite successful.

Give an example of when you have had to manage your time carefully and how you went about it?A good example of a time when I had to be careful and manage my own hours outside of college mindfully was during the autumn term of the Level 3 Creative Media Course. At this point, there was a significant amount of coursework that needed to be completed by a certain time (the end of the Music Video Production rotation). I found this quite difficult because I had to work around the hours of my part-time job away from college. This part-time job encompassed Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings after college. Personally, I considered the hours of this job to be unsociable because they involved night shifts. This job also resulted in more work along with the coursework that I was required to complete at the time. Because of the hours I worked on these nights, I had less time to complete any outstanding coursework and this was fairly stressful. However, I was able to deal with the coursework by working within the facilities at college, utilizing afternoons in which there were no lessons to get the work completed. I was also able to work around the hours my part-time job took up.

Give an example of when you had to take personal responsibility for something. What was the scenario and what was the outcome?I think that the problem which hindered the production of the short film project during the Level 2 course is a good example of how I have taken personal responsibility i.e. attempted to deal with something on my own. The reason why the production of the short film myself and the other member of my group were trying to create was hampered was because something occurred outside of college in regard to the other group member and he wasn’t able to come into college. Therefore, I was left on my own and couldn’t continue filming without the other group member. This resulted in the production of our short film being halted temporarily. For the time being, I was required to carry out the post-production process on the first scene the two of us had managed to film on the college field. Due to the fact that I had experience on video editing software prior to the project, I did not come across any complications whilst working on my own because I was already familiar with the nature of the program (Final Cut Pro).

Although there was a deadline for the end of filming, there was a chance that the two of us could resume filming on the final two days of the short film project. However, post-production became the main focus on these days for everyone else in the group, therefore we weren’t allowed to complete the short film because of the time constraints. The outcome was that we were able to edit the first scene for our short film (which lasted a duration of five minutes by the time it was finished) into our final short film. Although it wasn’t completed, we were able to secure a Merit Grade for our short film. In my opinion, this can be considered praiseworthy, especially because something got in the way of

production and we didn’t manage to complete our project.
