Objectives

What are the objectives for this project? The object for this project is to get Static seen, and heard by a larger audience.Who do you want to target? I would like to target girls and boys in their late teens to early twenties. How many records do you want to sell?Seeing as it would be Static’s first album, I expect to sell 500 copies of their album within the first couple of months. What would make this a successful exercise? In order to make this successful, I will have to advertise Static to the right audience, and start them off small by doing gigs in their local area. The best way I would feel to get people noticing them is by putting adverts up around the local schools and colleges, and also in shops where dance fashioned clothes are sold.I would also like to upload their music to dance music websites, and links to places where people can buy the album.

Band Profile

Name: Static

Age: 19, 20, 20

Previous releases: First Release

Genre: Dance

Style: They wear clothes that are quite fashionable. Their clothing is constantly changing with the times and alongside the music that is coming out. With that being said there isn't a set trend. It all depends on the time. They will most probably change their clothes depending on the music they are producing. This could include snap backs (Hat), jeans, t-shirts, hoodies and any other new and up to date items that aren't old fashioned.

Contemporaries:Avicii, David Guetta, Krewella, DVBBS, Borgeous, A-Minor, Martin Garrix, Showtek, Major Laser.

Think SMARTSpecific: Is there a clear aimThe aim is to sell at least 500 records in a month and a half of Static releasing their first album.Measureable: How will you measure the effect?a certain amount will be distributed to local record/music shops in the local city that they are from, and the rest will then hopefully be sold online.Achievable: Is it something that you can do?I believe that selling 500 albums in two months is a achievable if you know where, and what your audience does, so you can find out where they go.Realistic: Is this something that would actually happen?I think that you could easily pull this off with the right skills. You need to know how to set up a place to sell your product online, and the best place for up and coming artist to get seen is a website like www.DatPiff.com. This website is mostly Hip-Hop, but it would work. Then you need to know where to go on the streets to find the perfect audience who you know would buy your album.Time-related: Are there timescales for your project? We have given ourselves two months to try and sell 500 albums. I think this is relatively possible to achieve.

Media

What media will you use and why? Be specific about the platforms you will use. The best media to use to get the music produced by Static out there and seen is probably the local newspaper. Because they are new and just starting out, they will not be able to afford to have adverts on T.V. Another way to get their music heard is to upload teasers, or even full music videos up onto YouTube. What magazines might they get in to? They will be in magazines like Mix Mag. Mix Mag is a magazine who help you discover new ways of mixing. The website also has a page for new up and coming artists that have made a big impression on the dance music genre. Static will be on here. What TV channels would they be on?Due to them just starting off, they would not be on TV. They are not known enough to get any air time.Which radio stations would play their music?Radio one is a big radio station that plays a lot of underground music which is on it’s way to becoming big.

Page 7: Lo4 pro forma completed

Who would they give interviews to?They give interviews to websites such as NoisePorn, who are a big dance music blogging website. They also do interviews with up and coming artists.Which forms of social media would you use? The best social media websites to use would most probably be Facebook and Twitter, because a lot of people are on them. It would be an easy place to get seen by many people all at once. How would you use social media?Social media would be used to get them recognised by people all over the world. It will mean that their music will be seen without even using much effort, and because they are extremely good, people will like them straight off the bat, and they will definitely start trending.

Merchandise

What merchandise would you use to promote this band?

There are many things that you can merchandise when thinking about making more money for a band and they all depend on how big that band is. If we are just starting out a good thing to merchandise is T-shirts. T-shirts can be a great advertising and money making tool. People will buy a T-shirt if it has something they like on it for instance a group of musicians. You will get money from people buying the T-shirt and everyone who looks at the person will see the band name. One other thing that you can merchandise is vinyl records. These can be a worthwhile investment. Although people don’t really play vinyl records anymore, true fans love to have their favourite track in a collectable vinyl form. If your not well known enough or you don't have the fan base it could be very pointless bringing out vinyl record copies of your music. Mainly because you need to get it sold on other formats first e.g. Downloaded from the internet, CD’s or even just listened to through programs like Spotify. You could also give out stickers alongside the merchandise, this would increase the notoriety of the band just by fans sticking them wherever they wanted. If the band became very popular you could begin to merchandise more expensive items then in turn creating more profit. You could put the band name on some speakers but you would have to be confident that they would sell.

Manage the messageWhat is the message you want to communicate about this band? The message that this band is trying to send is that they are loyal to their fans. They wont change their style of music if a big pay check lands on their door step. They don’t want to loose touch with why they are doing it in the first place. They will be stylish and do what they want, so there will be a slight rebellious factor to their music. With that being said a majority of their time is spent making music and trying to keep their music fresh. All their producing will be done on the computer alongside sampled sounds and vocals.

What is the main selling point of the band and the album? The main selling point of the album will be the fact that they are all young and are creating new music with some old genres. The fact that they are young will appeal to many people who enjoy dance music because it is so surprising that they have become successful. In dance music it can take many years of trial and error to become popular or to find a style that suits you and the fans. They don’t want to be producers who milk the same sounds like Skrillex. They want their songs to be distinguishable and fresh. This can be difficult when first starting out but it is the best time to be experimental because you have a lot less to loose. Finding a good consistent style is more important than pumping out songs.

Hyperbole

Every marketing and PR campaign uses hyperbole. Its role is to make things seem better than they really are by using exaggeration and emotive words or imagery.

What are the words you will use? What words will help you sell and will appeal to your audience?‘The louder the better’‘Rapid’‘They wont stop until they are at the top’‘Music is their lifestyle’‘Sound’‘It’s the sound of the year’‘All new sound to the genre of dance’

EventsWhat events would you put on as part of the promotion of this band and album? The venue is very important and can be pivotal to a producers success. If you have the wrong venue it could be too packed or there could be too much space. The lighting could be too bright causing the wrong atmosphere. It would have to be a small venue with low ceilings. This is so the sound quality can be good everywhere in the building. It will have to be inside as being outside could be too open for a first night. It will have to be darkly lit so that the atmosphere is correct. Lasers and strobes can be effectively used to add to the experience e.g. Strobes timed to when a song drops or a smoke machine going off when there is a build up to a drop. They would play in small clubs to begin with. They would have to be clubs that regularly play this kind of music so that we have the right cliental.

Would they play small secret gigs? These producers would play at small gigs because they are trying to build up a fan base and get their music heard. They aren't in it for the money. They will mostly play small secret gigs until they are a band that is sought after. If the music is liked in these small venues, the people listening will go away in shock of the artist they have heard. Then in turn spreading the word and getting their name known. A large venue would be something that could be utilised if they became big, to share their music and to get a larger amount of money on the side. With this being said playing a large venue isn't their priority. They just want to make a living and if more money comes their way, so be it.

Would they appear for a signing in a flagship record store?Yes they would if it was an area where they knew people appreciated their music. They would have to build up a bit of a fan base before they could go to a record store. Although that could be a good place to get recognised.

Page 12: Lo4 pro forma completed

Would they play on TV chat shows? It would depend on what TV channel it was. If it was something like gmtv then they wouldn’t make an appearance because that would soil their name from the very beginning. If it was an appearance on MTV bass then maybe they would. It would depend on whether they had the right music to show to the masses.

Would they go on a huge arena tour?Definitely not right away. The music they will produce will be produced for small venues and for listening through headphones, so huge arena tours will most likely be out of the question.

What other events and happenings could you create to raise the public profile of the band?A Facebook page would be very helpful for showing and creating events. We could get as many nights in small clubs as possible and then post about them on Facebook. They would have to be on a weekend so that the maximum people would be out.

Internal motivation

What is the motivation behind this project? The motivation for the three producers is to make music and to get a career from what they love doing. They aren’t going to start off the project wanting to make money because that will motivate them to do the wrong things. If they do the wrong things they will loose fans.

Why is it an important project for you? It is important for me because I am trying to promote them as a band. This is my career as much as it is theirs. I want them to be successful but I also want them to stick to what they know and believe in. I will help them progress as much as I can until they are getting a sustainable amount of money to then call music producing their career.

Why is it an important project for the band?It is an important project for the three young producers because they are just starting out. This could be what makes or breaks them as musicians. They want to produce music for the rest of their lives as a career so setting off on a good foot is very important. Although they aren't in it primarily for the money, they still want people to hear and enjoy their music.

Motivation of media

Why would the media be interested in this project? The media would be interested in this project because they are new up and coming musicians and certain parts of the media love to be the first to discover something good. If they are popular or predicted to come popular its almost a race for the media to make the first coverage. If they are bad then its still a story to write about, its still a bit of text to fill a page.

Which parts of the media or media products (be specific) would be interested in the project? Many dance record labels will be interested in Static. They are very new to the scene, and record labels like to pick artists up as soon as they seem to be making an impact on the industry. They will attract labels like Spinnin’ Records, Anjunabeats, and Dim Mak Records.
