All new students are guaranteed aroom in high quality accommodation

LJMU is committed to helping you find accommodation that best suits your needs, budget and lifestyle. You can choose one of 4,000 bedrooms in high qualityaccommodation across Liverpool. Most bedrooms feature private en-suite bathroomsand all have individual broadband connections - the cost of which is usually included inyour rent.

All our accommodation is organised into self-catering flats, typically housing five or sixstudents each. You will have your own bedroom with access to a communal living areaand fully fitted kitchen. Most bedrooms include a private toilet, sink and shower but flatswith shared bathrooms offer a more affordable alternative.

In academic year 2015/16 all our accommodation will be completely smoke free. Thismeans that students are not allowed to smoke within their own bedroom or thecommunal areas of the flats.

Do not delay submitting your request as rooms are allocated on a “first come firstserved” basis. You can request accommodation if you have an unconditional or aconditional offer, as long as LJMU is your first choice university. You will need to makean initial payment to secure your booking but this will be returned if you do not meetthe requirements of your offer and are unfortunately not offered a place at LJMU.

Read this booklet carefully and consult the LJMU website if you require furtherinformation, in order to make your choice of accommodation. A detailed guide of facilitiesand prices for all the accommodation is now available on our website, requests can bemade from Monday, 2 February 2015 onwards.

Typical prices during the 2015/16 academic year:n Standard en-suite bedroom: £105 to £122 per week including broadband and fuel costs

n Deluxe en-suite bedroom: £112 to £130 per week including broadband and fuel costs

n Standard bedroom in flat with shared bathroom(s): £87.50 to £108.00 per week including broadband and fuel costs

Accommodation contracts are known as ‘tenancy agreements’ or ‘tenancies’ and are legallybinding for the full period once signed. Students who leave their accommodation duringthe academic year are liable for the rent until the end of the contract or until a replacementis found, unless there are exceptional grounds for the tenancy to be cancelled.

Tenancies will commence on Saturday, 19 September 2015 and finish 42 weeks lateron Friday, 9 July 2016. The Welcome Week for new students will commence on theweekend of 19 and 20 September and the first day of teaching for the vast majorityof courses is Monday, 28 September 2015.

It is important to note that all tenancies cover the full academic year. If your coursedoes not match the standard academic year - for example if you are a nursing orpostgraduate student - you can usually extend the tenancy period into the summer.

Don’t forget that you retain occupancy of your flat and your bedroom during theChristmas and Easter breaks and you won’t have to move your belongings if you gohome. You can also stay on in your accommodation after the first year - the onlyexception is Apollo Court as this is reserved for new students.

Whichever accommodation you choose, your rent will include all utility bills, a broadbandconnection in your room and basic insurance cover. Parking costs extra at all theaccommodation sites where it is offered and is at least £400 per year.

If you are a UK student who can provide details of a guarantor, you can opt to pay yourrent in three equal instalments. Your guarantor will probably be a parent or guardianand they must agree to act in this capacity. The three rent instalments coincide withyour student funding, meaning you will not pay anything in advance to secure yourroom except the initial payment.

It is important that you apply for your student funding as early as possible - do not waitfor your exam results. If you have any concerns about paying for your accommodation, please contact the Accommodation Office.

Location, location,LOCATIONAt LJMU most teaching takes place in Liverpool city centre at either ourMount Pleasant Campus or City Campus. All of the accommodation in thisGuide is located in the city centre, so so if your teaching takes place there, you will have several options within walking distance.

Some courses in the Faculty of Education, Health and Community aretaught at the IM Marsh Campus, located a few miles outside the citycentre in Aigburth. Further information about living options can be found onpage 9.

Because most LJMU students can walk to lectures, you should think verycarefully before bringing a car to Liverpool. As in most cities parking isexpensive and limited and so if having your car is important, you shouldrequest accommodation early to maximise your chances of securing a space.

For further information on where specific courses are taught, pleaseconsult the LJMU website.

The City Campus is home to threeLJMU Faculties:

n Education, Health and Community (part)n Sciencen Technology and Environment

The following accommodation optionsare ideal for students undertakingcourses in these Faculties.

Marybone is a large three phasecomplex and is ideally located adjacent tothe Avril Robarts Library and the TithebarnStreet building. Marybone 1 features flatswith shared bathrooms at a veryreasonable weekly rent. Marybone 2 and3 are almost identical and fully en-suite,although Marybone 3 is reserved for newhealthcare students (see page 10).

Victoria Hall is the smallestaccommodation option located within theCity Campus and is located close to the

Avril Robarts Library. It is particularlypopular with students studying Psychology,Sports Science and related courses.

Liberty Atlantic Point is locatedopposite the Byrom Street teachingbuildings and is one of the largest sitesoffered to new students. There is a well-stocked shop and a large amount ofparking spaces are available.

Students based in the City Campus canalso choose accommodation based closeto the Mount Pleasant Campus such asGrand Central, Europa, clv Liverpool orLiberty Prospect Point.

However it is important to note that thevast majority of new students undertakingcourses within the City Campus willchoose to live in one of the three siteslisted above.

The I M Marsh Campus is located inAigburth, about four miles from the city-centre and is home to part of the the Facultyof Education, Health and Community. Thereis no accommodation available on thecampus itself, except for a limited number ofrooms for new postgraduate students atRose Lane, which is ten minutes walk away.

Students who require accommodation whilestudying at I M Marsh can choose any of thecity-centre options and travel to the campusfor their lectures and the social facilities. Foursites in particular are recommended becauseof their proximity to public transport pick-up points.

Apollo Court is a modern andcompletely en-suite option, located about 5 minutes walk from the main railway stationand close to the busy London Roadshopping area. Apollo Court is reservedexclusively for new LJMU students andhence has a friendly atmosphere.

Capital Gate is located about 5 minutes walk away from Apollo Court, which it resembles in terms of price andfacilities, being also completely en-suite.

North Western Hall is less expensivethan the first two sites named abovebecause all the flats feature sharedbathrooms and the site is not as modern. However it is very centrally located whichmakes it good value for money.

Grand Central and Grenville Streetare also very popular with students based atIM Marsh.

Students who choose to live in one of thesesites can share their flat with other IM Marsh students if they wish. Students whochoose to live elsewhere can request to sharewith IM Marsh students but this cannot beguaranteed. Typically around two thirds of thenew students living at Apollo Court andCapital Gate each year are studying at IM Marsh.

Travelling to I M Marsh is easy. Two train lineshave stations within walking distance of theCampus and it is near a major bus route. A travel pass that covers all trains and buseswithin the area costs about £60 per month.Detailed travel information will be sent to allstudents before their arrival at LJMU.

Postgraduate and mature studentsThe majority of students entering accommodation will come to university straight fromschool or college and be aged under 21. If you prefer a quieter study environment, rooms are reserved for older students at a number of sites in the city centre.

If you wish to live in a flat with older students please indicate this when you submit yourrequest for accommodation. Every effort will be made to meet your needs but this cannotbe guaranteed in all cases. If you would prefer to live in a private house or flat, you shouldcontact Liverpool Student Homes (LSH) instead - see key contacts on back cover.

Healthcare studentsNursing, Midwifery and Paramedic Practice students may experience difficulties whensharing flats with other students because of differing schedules and workloads.

We strongly recommend healthcare students choose Marybone 3 as they will only sharetheir flats with students on similar courses. Rooms at Marybone 3 will be available fromSaturday, 19 September 2015 but will be available earlier if the Nursing, Midwifery orParamedic Studies courses commence earlier than Monday, 21 September 2015.

Students requiring accommodation for courses commencing in the period from Januaryto March 2016 should consult the LJMU website from Monday, 16 November 2015 tocheck what options are available.
