Welcome “With 20+ years experience of bringing visitors to Lochgoilhead, it is a pleasure to hopefully answer in this guide many of the questions that have been put to me over the years.!!The guide is designed to be viewed online. Where you see a link to an email or website, the link opens up in a new tab on your computer, so it is always easy to come back to the guide.!!I think it is important to point out that no company has paid to be included. This is not funded by advertising - it is motivated by a desire to share with you just what in my opinion, makes this place so special.”!!Leonard Gow, Lochgoilhead Holidays!

The Village!!Absolutely no doubt that your first visit to Lochgoilhead will be a memorable one. When you turn off the A83 at the Rest and be Thankful viewpoint and follow the six mile single track road as it twists and turns its way down through beautiful mountain scenery to the head of Loch Goil, you will already know that this place is pretty special.!!Lochgoilhead has been welcoming visitors for many years. The well to-do Glasgow merchants built homes overlooking the loch. They used to arrive by steamer. Loch Goil is a tidal sea loch with access from Loch Long and the Clyde.!!Today the village is still an active community, with a mix of residents and holiday home owners.!!The combination of easy access from Glasgow and its relaxing atmosphere being tucked away at the head of the

loch, choice of places to eat, wonderful walking and a superb range of indoor and outdoor activities, make it unique in the west of Scotland.!It is perfectly possible to come and do nothing apart from enjoying the views. If you feel up to it you can take the dog for a walk along the shoreline, enjoy a drink on the patio of The Goil Inn or in the garden of the Shore House Inn, have a swim, sauna & steam at the Drimsynie Leisure Centre and finish of with a Friday evening acoustic night in one of the pubs.!When you are ready for venturing outside the glen, there is touring to some of Scotland's most iconic spots. Take a cruise on Loch Lomond, visit spectacular Glencoe, have a stroll around Oban and take in the view of Mull from McCaig’s Tower.Come and visit us and find out for yourself what makes this place so special.!

”Ideally located to explore other parts of Scotland on a day trip (we managed ferry crossing to Mull & full island tour, also Harry Potter Steam Train from Fort William to Mallaig)”. Ivybank Cottage Trip Advisor Review.!!!”Lochgoilhead is an excellent base to use to explore the surrounding countryside in any weather. We did feel sheltered and far from the madding crowd but in reality we were back on the motorway in less than an hour.” Hightrees Holiday Home Trip Advisor Review.

It may not be Las Vegas, but it’s far from being Sleepy Hollow.!There is regular entertainment all year round ranging from acoustic nights to ceilidhs and live bands.

Get Afloat

Ways to explore our inland and sea lochs from the water.!With our 3,175 miles of coastline, Argyll offers many opportunities to take to the water. This is but a selection of ways to get-on-board, including self hire options, or sit back and let someone else take you to the likes of the Corryvreckan Whirlpool, deep into Glencoe via Loch Etive, world famous Loch Lomond, over the water to Mull & Iona, or how about a trip on the world’s last surviving paddle steamer, the MV Waverley. Visiting the Corryvreckan Whirlpool

Page 13: Lochgoilhead Destination & Accommodation Guide

Loch Etive - As part of a trip out to Oban you can consider a trip on MARA for a cruise on one of Scotland's most beautiful sea lochs. Two and three hour round trips to the upper reaches of the loch. Loch Etive stretches some twenty miles inland from the 'Falls of Lora' at Connel Bridge to the mountains of Glencoe. Phone for the schedule & prices: 07721 732703

Loch Lomond - There are many ways to explore this most famous of Scotland’s, and the UK’s biggest fresh water loch. Cruise Loch Lomond operate from Tarbet, just 12 miles from Lochgoilhead. They offer a range of trips on the water as well as a water taxi option for walkers on the West Highland Way. Phone them on: 01301 702356

Corryvreckan Whirlpool, Jura & Loch Craignish - Craignish Cruises offers guided wildlife boat trips from Ardfern on their purpose built catamaran Sea Leopard II. I did this last year and will never forget the sight of three Osprey’s in an inaccessible part of the loch. Wonderful trip. Phone: 07747 023038

Loch Katrine - In the heart of The Trossachs the historic steamship Sir Walter Scott has been cruising the loch for over a century. It is said that the scenery captured the imagination of Sir Walter Scott, inspiring him to write his poem “The Lady of the Lake”. A trip on the steamship makes for a nice excursion from Lochgoilhead taking in a circular tour of The Trossachs. Details on: www.lochkatrine.com

Mull, Iona & Staffa - It is possible to include a day out to the Inner Hebrides when staying in Lochgoilhead - if you get up early and allow for a full day away. Bowman’s Tours in Oban make it easy by joining in on one of their cruise & tour excursions. Details on: www.bowmanstours.co.uk

The Clyde, Bute & Cumbrae - The Waverley is the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world. Magnificently restored with towering funnels, timber decks, gleaming varnish and brass. If you are visiting the area during its summer season from Dunoon, this is a highly recommended trip. Enjoy it while you can. Details on: www.waverleyexcursions.co.uk

Loch Goil - Local boat hire is from Loch Goil Cruisers. Motor boats for fishing and sightseeing. Open all year. Phone: 01301 703 382. Boats4Hire - Fishing tackle sales & hire. Seasonal. From the jetty. Phone: 01301 703432.Argyll Voyageur Canoes - All year weather permitting. Sightseeing trips for up to 10 people taking you to parts of the loch only reachable by water. Places to Visit

Order your map!VisitCowal are pleased to send you their FREE Touring Map in advance.Email your name and address here. Available within the UK only. !!They are widely available when you are in Cowal.

The Cowal Map has made it really easy to plan a day out and combine touring on quiet roads with places to visit and places to eat. Here are a

few of my favourites…

Ardkinglas House sits at the head of Loch Fyne, not far from Lochgoilhead. Take time to join in one of their weekly house tours. Visit their Woodland Garden which includes the Tallest Tree in Britain.

Also worth a mention! In the south of Cowal the drive to Tighnabruaich is worth the trip alone for the views over the Kyles of Bute. As you head down into this pretty coastal village you will see Arran in the distance. The Tighnabruaich Gallery is worth a stop for a selection of original art.!Travel on to Ostel Bay, without doubt the best beach in Cowal. It’s a walk to get there and when you do arrive all there is is a beautiful crescent of sand with views directly across to Arran. Pick your day and it’s a visit well worth a bit of effort. Carry on north calling into Portavadie Marina which comes as quite a surprise when arriving by road. Drive north via Otter Ferry and follow the coastal road all the way up Loch Fyne.!

The Coal Ruadh Sculpture Park is tucked away down a road on the way to the Bute Ferry. A visit here combines a stroll around their beautiful gardens as they stretch from the main house down to the shores of the Kyles of Bute. The sculptures are a bonus. Fun and quirky. Call first to check their hours on 01700

Places to Visit

You don’t have to be a gardener to enjoy a visit to Benmore Garden. Their mountainside setting has been developed and nurtured over many years and it is a most pleasant place to pass some time. They have an exhibition space in the Courtyard and there is usually something on display. Join in one of their guided tours - and if anyone needs some help getting around, they have a tour including transport twice a week. The Benmore Cafe at the entrance has a good reputation.

You have to visit Inveraray at least once during your stay. The impressive castle you pass as you approach the town is the home of the Duke of Argyll. You can walk around the estate following the marked trails, and the castle is open to the public. Inveraray Jail is a must, especially if you have children with you. The history, living models as well as the courtroom and cells al add up to a fun and informative visit . The Stable Gallery, tucked away down an alley is stuffed full of interesting art. The Whisky Shop on the main street is also a popular stop.

The Cowal Peninsula, head out the glen and explore.…!!Take the hill road from half-way down Loch Eck over to Glen Finnart to Ardentinny Beach before following the shore road through Blairmore (for Quadmania) and down to Dunoon. !Head down to Colintraive and the Bute Ferry for a visit to the magnificent Mount Stuart, a historic house full of character. Head back over the hill road at the top of Loch Striven for some more fine scenery. !!

Touring Suggestions

Beavers, Crinan Canal, Fort Dunadd and Wildlife Cruise!Drive to Lochgilphead and take the road to Crinan. Follow the Crinan Canal road part way before heading south to visit the information centre and viewpoint for the (1) Knapdale Beavers. Carry on to (2) Crinan to see the boats as they enter and leave the canal. Head north to the site of the prehistoric (3) Fort Dunadd. You can climb to the top, great views, interesting history and the kids will love it. Carry on to (4) Ardfern and take the Leapord II wildlife cruise or visit the Corryvreckan Whirlpool. Check timings in advance. A wonderful day out in the west of Argyll.

Inveraray and Loch Fyne!Head over to (1) Ardkinglas Woodland Garden to see The Tallest Tree in Britain before visiting (2) Fyne Ales Brewery & Tap Room for a tour. (3) The Oyster Bar & Shop is worth a stop and there is an adjoining information centre and Tree Shop. (4) Inveraray has a number of attractions including Inveraray Castle, home of the Duke of Argyll, Inveraray Jail and shopping on the main street. You can carry on south to (5) Auchindrain Open Air Museum to learn about what life was like in an original Highland Farming Township. These stops can be done in any order.

Popular Excursions! For visitors wanting to use Lochgoilhead as a base to

explore further, we are pleased to offer some suggestions of the touring possibilities. In no particular order, the six tours highlighted are just a sample of places to go. !Clearly to make the most of your trip you should do a bit of research online, or buy a map and guide book. Argyll and the west of Scotland is rich in history, wildlife, places to visit and most of all, touring through some beautiful coastal scenery. Other notable trips to consider are into Glasgow for shopping and museums, down the Mull of Kintyre with the option of a scenic ferry trip to Lochranza in Arran or the Island of Gigha, head east through the Trossachs to Loch Katrine and the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.

Page 19: Lochgoilhead Destination & Accommodation Guide

Oban with optional Mull and Iona Tour!Drive via Inveraray and Loch Awe with a stop to photograph (1) Kilchurn Castle. Carry on to (2) Oban. If you leave home early enough you can visit the World Heritage site of (3) Iona. Enjoy a 40 minute crossing to Mull to join a coach for a tour to Fionnphort and board the ferry to (3) Iona. You have two hours on Iona which allows time to visit the Benedictine Nunnery and the Abbey. This tour operates daily from April to October. Contact Bowman’s Tours on 01631 563221 for details. Many visitors only go as far as Oban. There are a good selection of shops and places to eat. We like to take a picnic and head to Ganavan Sands to eat and enjoy the view to Mull.

Edinburgh - Day Trip!It makes for a full day out - but it is possible to get a taste of (1) Edinburgh on a day trip from Lochgoilhead. Rather than drive into the city I highly recommend you make use of the Park & Ride by Edinburgh Airport on the way into town. Save the stress of finding your way around. Take the bus or tram to Waverley Station and hop on one of the many Sightseeing Tour buses. No better way to get a feel for a new city than having a commentary as you sit back and tour Scotland’s capital city. Edinburgh has much to offer: The Castle, The Royal Mile, Princes Street, The New Town. This is only a quick visit - you will be back…

Rannoch Moor, Glencoe & Stalker Castle!A wonderful day including some of the most photographed spots in Scotland. Drive to Loch Lomond and head north via Crianlarich and Tyndrum to (1) Rannoch Moor and on to the scenic splendour of (2) Glencoe. Stop at the viewpoints. It is magnificent in any weather. Visit the Information Centre to learn the story of the massacre. Carry on to Benderloch and the much photographed (3) Castle Stalker sitting proudly on its own island with the Inner Hebrides as its backdrop. Complete the circular tour back via the Connel Bridge and home via Loch Awe and (4) Kilchurn Castle. That’s what I call a a good day out.

The Cowal Peninsula! Our Cowal tour takes you to (1) Dunoon before heading over the hill road via Loch Striven and stopping at the Kyles of Bute viewpoint. Carry on into (2) Tighnabruaich. This is all about enjoying the drive. Quiet roads through beautiful scenery. Drive to (3) Portavadie Marina for a look at this contemporary marina before completing the circuit by heading north along the shores of (4) Loch Fyne via Otter Ferry to Strachur. Along the way you pass through villages with historic Inn’s and the ever changing views of lochs and mountains. This is by no means the only tour of Cowal - but it will give you a taste to explore further.

The trick on single track roads is to drive with a combination of consideration and assertiveness. There are a some simple rules to keep in mind. 1. Traffic going downhill would usually give way to traffic going uphill. 2. If someone comes up behind you, they're obviously travelling the road faster than you are. You should use a passing place to pull over and let them through. It is much more comfortable travelling these roads without having someone sit on your back bumper. 3. If the passing place is on the right and you reach it first, stop on the left side of the road opposite the passing place - do not pull across the road into the passing place.

Take your time. You are on holiday - What’s the rush…
