BUYINGGUIDE

By Janet Tansley

The grass is greener for Ian ashe makes a new start in lifeE

VERYTHING is comingup roses for Ian Woods– or it will be, once herolls his sleeves up andgets stuck in to his

brand new garden!Ian has always dreamed of

having a garden and, at the age of50, he has finally got one.

The Anfield man, who had livedat the same property for all ofthose 50 years, has finally made afresh start – and it’s just down theroad from his boyhood home.

“Having a garden to look outon, after all these years of onlyhaving a tiny back yard, is reallyquite something,” he said. “I’veturned 50 and it feels like I’veopened a whole new chapter inmy life.”

Ian had lived on Hayfield Streetall his life. He inherited theterrace house from his auntie, and at one point Ian, his parents, his grandparents and his auntieall lived on the street next door toone another.

But the house, which hadbecome dilapidated over theyears, is finally being demolished, along with neighbouringproperties, under councilregeneration plans for the area.

Ian has now moved into abrand new Keepmoat home atThe Parks, a popular developmentof modern, stylish properties onRobson Street, less than a milefrom his former home.

And the two bedroom homehas proved a revelation to Ian.

He said: “The difference it hasmade to my quality of life is justunbelievable.

“In the old house I only had gasfired heaters on the walls, and itwas incredibly draughty, so Itended to stay in just one roomand try to keep that warm. I cannow afford to heat the wholehouse, which has made such adifference.

“The house is beautiful. There’sdefinitely some sadness that goesalong with leaving a house you’vegrown up in, as it is so full of

memories, but I feel really excitedabout the future now.

“I’ve only moved down theroad, but it feels like I’ve movedto another world.”

The Parks development is just ashort stroll from two of theworld’s most iconic football stadiain Anfield and Goodison Park.

And the second phase of thedevelopment is now up for salewith 97 new two, three and fourbedroom properties on offer,

providing ideal homes for firsttime buyers or families seekingroom to grow.

A stunning show home hasbeen opened at the scheme, togive prospective buyers a taste ofthe space and what is on offer.

Jen Brown, sales director atKeepmoat, said: “We’re reallypleased for Ian. He’s a great guyand we know that his new homewill make a big difference to hislifestyle.

“The properties are all designedwith high levels of insulation, double glazing and energyefficient boilers, so they areeconomical to run, as well asproviding lots of style and space.

“The development continues toattract a lot of interest from firsttime buyers, professional couplesand families, and lots of peoplewho come to look around aregenuinely amazed at how muchthey can get for their money.”

Prices at The Parks start at£92,995 for a two bedroomproperty, or just £74,395 with theHelp to Buy scheme.

The show home for the schemecan be found at Robson Street,Anfield L5 6RG, and is openThursday to Sunday 10am to 5pmor Monday 10am to 6pm.

■ A dull basementroom couldbecome a cool den

After

THIS week we create a spotof ‘disco heaven’ as atired storage basement isreborn AS a laser-lit,colourful, get-together

space where younger familymembers can chill out.

OUT OF THE DARKPreviously, a large mirror tried tobrighten this basement but, with nonatural light, there was nothing toreflect – so it was all a bit pointless.

Inspired by decades of nightclubbing, we added colour-changinglights concealed at the room’scorners. If your project has plasterboard walls then this is easy as youcan cut out the corners and runelectrical wiring behind the cavity.

At the touch of a button it’s blue, pink, green or white – talk aboutdecorating with light!

You can find colour-changing

flexible lighting at Litecraft,www.litecraft.co.uk

WOOD IS GOODThe basement had no dampness sowe were able to use hardwood tobring warmth and friendliness whilebeing hardwearing and durable. Thetimber planks were laid from front toback to elongate the space. Get thelook with Rustic Oiled Oak,£29.99m2 from McKay Flooring,www.mckayflooring.co.uk

CUSTOMISESTORE-BOUGHT ITEMSA funky sideboard takes centre stagewith bold colours and makes afashion-forward statement.

The unit was initially plain blackbut we painted the body and legswhite, then picked out the drawerfronts and doors in vivid green.

The large Trollsta sideboard came

from Ikea (it’s now discontinued, though a smaller lilac option is stillavailable) but you could take theidea and apply it to an existingsideboard to create your own look.

FUNKY FURNITURE, FUNKYHOMEWe love the ‘groovy baby’ lines ofthe dining table with its swoopingwhite base and round top. Oncewe’d added the clear plastic andchrome chairs, the finished lookappeared almost invisible, avoidingvisual clutter and keeping spaceclear and precise. The Docksta tableand four Tobias chairs cost £390from Ikea, www.ikea.com

ART YOU CAN WALK ONArt rugs combine underfoot comfortwith colour, making them a perfectsource of decor, especially in plainrooms where they really stand out.

Use them to protect a wooden floorand to map out specific roomfunctions in open-plan spaces – herethe dining room is clearlydelineated. Visitwww.modern-rugs.co.uk

PLUNDER THE PASTTO CREATE THE FUTUREFashion is all about taking elementsof the past and present and puttingthem together to create your ownindividual look.

In this fashion-forward room, thesideboard is offset beautifully withan antique-style mirror that hasbeen treated to the same vivid limecolour as the sideboard, therebytying them both together andcreating a splash of colour at thesame time.

GARDENSTO DO

Bamboo is the fastest-growing woody plant; it can grow 35 inches in a day

Waiting forwarmth

THE Malvern Show hasgone and how brilliant it

was – despite the verychangeable weather. The wholeevent was superbly organised –a lovely lady called Nina Actonplayed a very important roleand helped make it so special.

Now it’s all about Chelseaand this centenary yearpromises to be the biggest andbest ever. I’ll be there for thewhole week so it’s going to behectic.

At Malvern I couldn’t resistbuying plants (as if thereweren’t enough queuing up tobe planted anyway) and theymust be planted beforedeparture. Despite having wishlists of plants for later in theyear, I seem to haveconcentrated on plants that areat their best now.

SEEDS OF SENTIMENT:I’VE planted double

cowslips, some more whitetrilliums, pictured above, to gowith the trillium grandiflora Iplanted on Gardeners’ World afew weeks ago.

There is dicentra ‘SpringMorning’, with ferny foliageand delightful pendulousflowers, which I wanted asmuch for sentimental value asanything else. When I was little,it grew in the small frontgarden under the copper beechtrees my mum and I planted. They were seedlings rescuedfrom a site where the road wasbeing widened but eventuallygrew into a lovely hedge.

It’s not just bought in newplants that are of specialinterest now – we’re sowingseed of all kinds. Our vegetablesowing programme is waybehind but so too are ourannual and perennial flowers.

This week I’ve sowneverything from cabbages tocornflowers, pictured below, and if only the weather wouldwarm up they might stand achance of catching up.

CHELSEA show timealways reminds me ofcherry blossom. Whetheryou live in a town or city,in the suburbs or in a

country village – even if you have nogarden – cherry blossom thrustsitself into your consciousness.

Flowering cherries are one of themost widely planted street trees.Parks and gardens abound withthem – tall and narrow, as round asa lollipop or wide and sweepinguntil they almost touch the floor.

In May, their branches are deckedwith soft pink and white flowers.

When we lived in Ladbroke Grovein west London, my route back fromwork would undergo a diversion allthrough May as I rode my bike downChesterton Road. Who wouldn’tsmile to see such exquisite flowers, loading branches so thickly that youcould see neither wood noremerging leaves?

After a windy night, their confetticovered the pavement and childrenwould pick up their bouquets.

The British have imported allmanner of goods from Japan butnothing more enlightening thancherry blossom.

CAUSE TO CELEBRATEIn Japan, cherries play a hugelyimportant role in daily life. Hanami, the festival that honours the arrivalof the cherry blossom, is celebratedthroughout the country. Familiesand friends go in parties to view themassed blossoms, making a day of itwith special picnics.

The onset of the openingblossoms is tracked daily on thenews as it moves northwards fromthe warmer south around Okinawain January, to Tokyo in late Marchand up in the mountains andaround Hokkaido in April.

Although this would seem to be along flowering season, it only lasts ineach place for a short while and itsimpact lies in the fact that the cherrytrees are suddenly and completelycovered in blossom. Just assuddenly, the petals fall like snowand are lost within a week.

Short-lived cherry blossom hasbeen a traditional metaphor for theephemerality of life followed by theinevitability of death. And the lessonfor life is to appreciate the moment, the intense beauty and theoptimistic joy of spring, before itpasses.

The variety most widely planted is‘Somei-Yoshino’ and was probablyintroduced in the mid-1800s. It ispossibly a cross with a Koreanspecies.

Although it has become a nationaltradition, Hanami must be fairlyrecent in Japanese history, eventhough sakura, cherry blossom, has

always been revered and portrayedin pictures and poems.

And there are records of thenobility as far back as the thirdcentury celebrating cherries. Noweveryone can follow the ritual ofvisiting the blossoms.

Most of the Japanese floweringcherries were developed fromPrunus serrulata and Prunussieboldii. Prunus serrulata was thefirst of these cherries to be widelygrown in Europe. Ironically, it wasfirst introduced from Canton inChina.

It is a beautiful tree in its ownright – of small stature with a

plateau-like top, with bunches ofdouble white flowers. Prunussieboldii is now known as Prunus‘Takasago’.

It is a pretty, spreading tree withdouble flowers of pale pink. Theresulting Sekura crosses, SomeiYoshino, have double, pure whiteflowers with a pink blush at the basewith just enough variation to givethe breathtaking frothy look whenseen from a distance.

Cherries are fun. Many of themhave wonderful bark, their youngfoliage is often pretty and theirautumn colour can be magnificent. No matter how small your garden,

Q I WANT to grow oldroses but most have

only a short floweringperiod. Any ideas?

A DAVID Austin Roseshas a strain of English

Roses with the shapes andfragrances of old roses andthe repeat flowering ofmodern varieties. They areeasy to grow and reliable.

QWHAT is thedifference between

wild rocket and theone-season variety.

A RUCOLA selvatica,wild rocket, is a

perennial and will grow forseveral years. It can be cutover and over and willalways come again. Its tasteis stronger than cultivated

rocket, rucola coltivata, pictured right. Sow annualrocket successionally everyfew weeks and cut it when it'syoung.

With the perennial varietyyou don't need to keepsowing, you just keep picking.

Q IS USING mycorrhizalfungi to plant shrubs

worth the cost?

A THESE fungi do aidroot growth and

help shrubs and treessettle in. But they mustbe in direct contact withthe roots to work – sothere's no pointsprinkling a bit in theplanting hole andhoping for the best. Youpays your money andyou takes your choice.

UKmeadowsunder threat

IF ASKED to comeup with a list of the

UK’s rarest habitats, veryfew people would includemeadows.

But alongside lowlandheathland, salt marshand ancient woodland, our flower rich-meadowsand grasslands are nowone of our mostthreatened and rapidlydisappearingenvironments.

Millions of acres havebeen lost, with only a tiny2% of the meadows andgrasslands that existed inthe 1930s still remaining.

That something asquintessentially British asthe meadow could havedisappeared so quicklyfrom right under ournoses may well come assomething of a shock.

But unless somethingis done to rapidly reversethe decline of theseancient and vitallyimportant landscapes, the traditional meadowthat has graced so manypaintings and poems willdisappear forever underthe plough.

Wildflower meadowshave been part andparcel of Britain’sagricultural landscape forthousands of years.

They are notintensively farmed, butrather managed intraditional ways throughgrazing and hay-making.

These methodspromote a very highdiversity of wild plantspecies. Traditionally, cattle were kept out ofthe meadow from earlyspring to midsummerallowing a wide range ofgrasses and flowers toflourish.

This paradise inminiature is an assault onthe senses. Bumblebees, grasshoppers andhoverflies compete withthe musical tinkerings ofyellowhammers andskylarks to weave an

intricate gauze of soundaround the gentlelandscape. This sonata isembellished with thedelicious perfume offlowering thistle, cowslip, buttercup, orchid andviolets.

There is movement atevery turn, from theflickering chessboardpatterns of marbled whitebutterflies and azureflashes of the Adonis blueto the scampering ofunseen weasels and theexplosive escape dashesof rabbits.

Wildlife charityPlantlife is spearheadinga campaign to save ourremaining meadows.

Richard Moyse, whomanages Plantlife’swildflower meadowreserve Ranscombe Farmin Kent, explains theirallure.

“A real wild flowergrassland is a feast for thesenses that can stay withyou for a very long time,”he says.

Meadows support arich diversity of wildplants, insects, animalsand birds, includingmany rare species ofinternational importance.

Nowadays wildflowermeadows are viewed bythe agricultural industryas uneconomic. The fewthat remain suffer fromneglect and as a resultmany sites fail to qualifyfor support fromcountryside stewardshipgrants.

Plantlife’s JustinaSimpson explains: “TheSave Our MagnificentMeadows project is abouttaking emergencyconservation action topreserve existingwildflower meadows andgrasslands in targetedareas. Now is the perfecttime to plan your datewith our magnificentmeadows.”■ Visit www.plantlife.org.uk/nature-reserves

With CarolKlein of TV’sGardeners’ World

there is a cherry for you. If there islittle space for a broad-topped tree, then the answer may be to go for acolumnar cultivar.

You could follow the plantingfashion of the 60s and try Prunus‘Amanogawa’ – serrulata erecta –given an AGM by the RHS almost 80years ago. Its familiar uprightbranches are well-endowed withupward-facing, soft pink flowers –perfect against a blue sky in lateApril or May.

If there is space you could go forthe great white cherry, Prunus‘Tai-haku’. An emperor amongcherries, it has large, single flowersof brilliant white.

Cherry blossoms are easy to growand are not fussy, although theydislike poorly drained soil and willnot tolerate boggy conditions. I lovethem dearly but sometimes I yearnfor my own Hanami.

Not a cherry at all, Exochorda isthe most showy blossom at GlebeCottage and it has responded well tosevere pruning. It is a picture ofwhite blossom at the moment and, from a distance, looks like tumblingsnow.

Flowering cherries steal our heartsas they show how life is short andsweet and should be enjoyed, justlike the joy of spring...

■ The lounge in a Lovell home offers space and light in a contemporary setting and is just part of thepackage which has meant the housebuilder has won a second customer service award

■ Steve and Cathy Knott lovelife at Cressington Heath

By Katie McLoughlin

Dream home for a dream lifeM

OVING home andgetting married arerated as two of themost stressfulexperiences in life.

Do both at the same time andyou’re asking for trouble, unless, that is, you buy a brand-newhome as newlyweds Cathy andSteve Knott found.

Keen to start married life in anew home together, the couplechose to buy a brand-new Redrowhome in south Liverpool to takethe hassle out of moving.

The couple fell in love with theRedrow homes at CressingtonHeath but feared they’d lost theirdream home when the originalphase sold out.

Cathy explains: “We weregetting married and wanted a newstart so we decided to put ourfour-bedroom semi up for sale. We’d looked at homes in theearlier phase of CressingtonHeath but had a house to sell sothought we’d missed out.

“After we’d sold our old homewe discovered that Redrow hadstarted building in the area againand reserved a three bedroomBrecon off-plan.”

Steve and Cathy married justweeks after moving. With awedding to organise, theyappreciated the ease of living thatbuying a new home offered.

Cathy says: “Buying a brand-new home meant we got exactlywhat we wanted. It was great tobe able to choose things like the

finish of the kitchen cabinets andthe bathroom tiles rather thanhaving to make do with whatsomeone else has left behind.”

Cathy and Steve’s Breconboasts a spacious lounge thatruns from the front to the rear ofthe property, with French doorsto the garden. Like all newRedrow homes, there is anopen-plan kitchen/dining roomwith integrated appliances.Upstairs there are three

bedrooms, one with en suite, plusa family bathroom.

Well insulated, with doubleglazing and central heating asstandard, new homes like Cathyand Steve’s are 40% more efficientto run than homes built only adecade ago.

“I’ve noticed that the house is alot warmer than the one wemoved from and our water rateshave gone down,” says Cathy.“I’ve never lived in a new- build

home before but wouldn’t goback.”

Current availability atCressington Heath includes achoice of three and four bedroomhomes with prices from £179,995.■ To find out more, visitRedrow’s show home atCressington Heath, off GarstonRoad, open Thursday to Mondayfrom 10am to 5.30pm, call 0151345 3010 or visitwww.redrow.co.uk/cressington.

Carpet is from the Latin carpere, ‘to pluck’ because they were made from ‘plucked’ fabric

DDEEAARR

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK

DONNY

QWE had a reinforcedsteel joist put in

when our extension wasbuilt 12 years ago. Threeyears ago we noticed aceiling crack. It closes if theheating is on but it’sunsightly when the room iscold.

A IF you have abuilding certificate,

then the beam will havebeen installed properly.Sometimes the hole in thewall where the beam issupported is filled withplasterboard that cancrack.

I would cut the crack outto see how far back it goes, then fill with plaster. Orplace self-adhesive fibretape over it and fill overwith a fast-set filler to solvethe problem.

Q IS there a whitepaint I can use to

touch up inside mymicrowave?

A I WOULD adviseagainst that. The

inside of the microwaveoven will be a specialmaterial to receivemicrowaves and you don’twant to take the risk ofcontaminating the inside.

Q I TOOK up some oldself-adhesive vinyl

floor tiles from a plywoodfloor, leaving a stickyresidue of adhesive. I wantto lay new tiles but thesticky residue is a problem.Have you any tips for howto remove it?

Q REPLACE the oldplywood or put a thin

layer of new plywood overthe existing surface. It’s fareasier than trying to scrape, burn or chemically removethe old adhesive off. Becareful with the old vinylfloor tiles, they may haveasbestos through them.■ For more tips go towww.diy-donny.co.uk

AHOME wouldn’t be

homely without carpet.Carpet makes it cosyand comfy underfoot, and it’s less draughty

and more heat retentive and soundabsorbing than many other floorcoverings.

But with so many different typesto choose from, it’s hard to knowwhere to begin.

Picking the colour of your newcarpet, and whether you want it tobe patterned or plain, is just part ofthe decision process.

While many carpets are suitablefor use throughout the home, somehave a more luxurious feel, perfectfor areas of light foot traffic such asbedrooms.

Others are more hardwearing, making them ideal for areas ofheavy foot traffic like hallways.

Having lots of different carpets inone home isn’t a good look, especially if they meet in thehallway or landing, so bear this inmind if you’re replacing one carpetand not others.

The carpet’s pile affects itsappearance, feel and performance. As a general rule, the moreluxurious the carpet is (ie the longerthe pile), the more care it will needto keep it looking good.

Choose from twist piles, whichhave a coarse, rugged finish; velvetpiles, which have a smooth, luxurious finish; loop piles, whichare similar to natural flooring, suchas coir (avoid if you have pets, particularly cats, because of thedamage their claws can do); andsaxony piles, which have a sensuousfeel, but aren’t suitable for heavyfoot traffic areas because they havea deep pile.

How a carpet looks, feels andwears also depends on what it’smade of. Without a doubt, a woolcarpet is a quality carpet, but woolcan be blended with nylon orpolypropylene (at least 50% wool isrecommended) to improve thecarpet’s performance, make it moreaffordable, or create a special effect.

Wool carpet is warm and soft, with a luxurious feel. It wears well,is easy to maintain as it doesn’t soileasily, and is naturally flameretardant, as well as beingsustainable and environmentallyfriendly.

If you want to support ourhome-grown industry, opt forBritish wool – a staggering 70% of itgoes into carpets.

“If in doubt, look for the WoolRich Quality Mark - it’s the onlyquality assurance initiative in theUK carpet industry and is yourguarantee that the suitability claimsmade by the manufacturer are true,”says Rupert Anton, of industry bodyThe Carpet Foundation.

“You really can believe what itsays on the label. Based on British

Standards and internationalproduct tests, the quality marklooks at wear index, appearanceretention, surface pile density, tuftdensity and luxury rating.”

Nylon is often blended with woolin a carpet and is extremelyhardwearing and easy to clean.Nylon also has great abrasion, stainand soil resistance and lends itselfto multiple colours of carpet.

Similarly, polypropylene carpet isextremely hardwearing and easy tomaintain – it’s stain resistant andkeeps its colour well. Polypropylenecarpets can be very inexpensive, sothey’re a good choice if you’re on abudget.

Just as it’s important to have yournew carpet professionally fitted(and measured), it’s also essentialto invest in new, good qualityunderlay, as it helps the carpet tosit properly and wear evenly.

In addition, it increases heat andsound insulation and reduces pilecompression, so the carpet looksgood for longer – new underlay canactually increase the life of a carpetby 40%.
