EDINA COUNTRY CLUB Edina Country Clubgot its start in 1922when S.S. Thor-pe purchased 120 acres of the Craik Farm near the Edi-na-Morningside area and announced plans for a new community, “The Country Club District.”Later prolific golf course architect Tom Bendelow from Aberdeen, Scotland, was hired to lay out a6,350-yard 18-hole coursethat featured greens of “genuine Creeping Bentgrass.”Then called Thorpe

Country Club, the course opened in 1924. Renamed Edina Country Clubin 1946, the clubhas seen a number of renova-tionsover the years, but none more significant than in 2010-2011, when Tom Lehman and Chris Brands redesigned the course, installed new green complexes, bunkers, tees and fairway grasses.

This year marks the seventh time theclub has hosted the MGA Amateur: in 1926, Harrison “Jimmy”Johnston de-feated Jake Wetherby, 3 and 1; Edina’s own Allen Labatt was medalist, posting 76-74—150.In 1937, Bobby Campbell defeated Neil Croonquist, 5 and 4. In 1945, with a switch from match play to stroke play, Al Clasen posted 73-70-69—212 to win the championship. In 1958and back to match play, Bob Henrikson defeatedGene Hanson, 3 and 2; Edina’s Dick James was medalist, shooting 73-70—143.

In 1971and a return to stroke play, Dave Haberleposted 67-74-74—215 to win by one shot over Dick Blooston, who put up steady rounds of 72-71-73—216.In 1986, the last time the Amateur Championship has visited Edina CC, Dave Nordeen won his second consecutive amateur after carding rounds of 72-71-75—218; Edina’s Dick Blooston finished T-9, posting scores of 68-76-81—225(since the championship moved to stroke play permanently in 1967, Blooston finished inside the top ten no less than 10 times).

Edina has seen four members win seven State Amateur championships: Dick Sawyer, in 1936; Dave Haberle (claimed by Edina CC in its club history, but playing out of Interlachen CC), in 1971; John McMorrow, in 1979; and John Harris(the 1993 U.S. Amateur champion), in 1974, 1987, 1989 and 2000

LAST YEAR’S CHAMPIONSHIP A late-round eagle and a pair of key pars allowed Clay Kucera to fend off charges from both Van Holmgren and Andrew Is-raelson to earn Kucera his first state victory at the 116th MGA Amateur Championship, July 17 at Somerby Golf Club.

Overcoming a rocky start to the final round, Kucera dropped his eagle chance from 30 feet at the par-3 15th and scrambled to save par at the 16th and 17th, extending his lead to two strokes before a par on the final hole made him the first player since Eric Deutsch (2004) to win the championship after making the field as an alternate. Kucera posted 71-66-72—209 (-7), one shot better than Holmgren and Israelson.

Holmgren, who posted an opening-round 68 to take the 18-hole lead, said winning the championship a year earlier only made him hungrier to win another. Unable to convert multiple birdie and eagle chances during Wednesday’s final round, Holmgren fell one stroke short of becoming the 10th player in championship history to successfully defend his title, but “the putts just weren’t falling,” he said afterward.

Israelson, with five state victories to his credit prior to this season, began the summer by advancing through U.S. Open Local Qualifying and later defeating Parker Reddig in the finals of the MGA Players’ Championship. At Somerby he came up shy of becoming only the third player to win the Players’ Championship and the State Amateur in the same season.

THE FIELD Clay Kucera returns to defend his title amongst a formida-ble field of challengers including six former MGA Amateur champions: Jesse Bull, Golden Valley G&CC (2014); Dave Carothers, Windsong Farm GC (2017); Mike Christensen, Northland Country Club (1995); Bryce Hanstad, Olym-pic Hills GC (2007); Van Holmgren, Pioneer Creek GC (2018); and Trent Peterson, Fountain Valley GC (2008).

Should Kucera successfully defend his title, it would be the eleventh time a champion has accomplished this remarkable achievement – the most recent being current PGA Tour player Tom Hoge, who won in 2009-2010.

Notable competitors in the field include the 2017 and 2019 Class AA High School individual champ, Cecil Belisle (Red Wing GC); the 2019 MN PGA Junior Boys’ champ, Gunnar Broin (Chaska Town Course); the 2001 MGA Mid-Amateur and 2014 MPGA State Public Links champ, Tony Brown (Wayzata CC); the 2019 MGA Mid-Amateur champ, Justin Burleson (Mendakota CC); the 2017 USGA Four-Ball champ, Frankie Capan (North Oaks GC); the 2017 MPGA State Public Links champ, Joe Conzemius (In-terlachen CC); the two-time Minnesota State Open champ (2016-2017), Ben Greve (Olympic Hills GC); the 2011 MPGA State Public Links and 2012 MPGA Match Play champ, Jonathan Hanner (Baker National GC); the 2016 Class AA High School individual champ, Derek Hitch-ner (Minikahda Club); the 2019 MGA Players’ and 2016 Minnesota State Junior Boys’ champ, Andrew Israelson (Vintage at Staples); the 2016 MGA Mid-Players’ champ, Andy Jacobson (Eagle Creek GC); the 2011 Minnesota State Open champ, Troy Johnson (Medina G&CC); the 2019 Minnesota State Open champ, Brady Madsen (Hawk Creek CC); the 2002 MGA Players’ champ, David Morgan (Mendakota CC); the 2015 MGA Mid-Players’ champ, Joe O’Brien (Rush Creek GC); the 2019 MGA Players’ run-ner-up and 2019 Twin Cities champion, Parker Reddig (Hiawatha GC); the 2017 MGA Senior Players’ champ, Jerry Rose (Alexandria GC); six-time MGA Player of the Year, and the 2018 MGA Players’ champ, Sammy Schmitz (StoneRidge GC); the 2016 Class AAA High School indi-vidual champ, Ben Sigel (Windsong Farm); the 2019 Min-nesota State Junior Boys’ champ, Ian Simonich (Moorhead CC); the 1996, 2002 and 2004 MGA Mid-Amateur champ, John Spreiter (Litchfield GC); the 2016 and 2018 MPGA State Public Links champ, Max Tylke (Links at Northfork); the 2018 Minnesota State Junior Boys’ and MN PGA Junior Boys’ champ, Caleb VanArragon (Bunker Hills GC); and the 2019 MGA Senior Amateur champ, Trent Wilcox (Headwaters CC).

CLUB TEAM EVENT The MGA Amateur Championship includes a team compe-tition during the first two rounds (MGA member clubs are represented by three or four golfers, whose low three scores are totaled). Ties are broken by a matching of scorecards, per the Official Guide to the Rules of Golf, see Section 5A(6) of the Committee Procedures.

Last year, Baker National GC (Ian Mackenzie-Olson, and Van and Will Holmgren) won with a two-day total of 432 (even par), two shots better than the Chaska Town Course team (Jon Dutoit, Russ Higgins, Lincoln Johnson and Clay Kucera).

ELIGIBILITY – To enter the MGA Amateur Championship, a player must be an associate member of the MGA (through membership of an MGA member club) and carry a USGA Handicap Index of 6.4 or lower at the time of entry.

As of July 3, there are 116 players in the field with “plus” USGA Handicap Indexes (that is, having an index that is better than scratch), with Derek Hitchner and Parker Red-dig atop the list of competitors at +6.2.

The oldest competitor in the field is Jerry Rose (Alexandria GC), 61 years, 9 months and 10 days; the youngest, Kyler Schwamb, Southern Hills GC, 15 years, 2 months and 25 days.

all five events and broke a program record by shooting 64 at the Klocke Family Classic to notch his only top-10 finish. Kucera will now transfer to Colorado State Universi-ty-Pueblo for his junior and senior seasons. The defending champion Holmgren posted an opening-round 68 to take the 18-hole lead, saying winning the championship a year ago only made him hungrier to win another. Unable to convert multiple birdie and eagle chances during the final round Wednesday, Holmgren fell one stroke short of becoming the 10th player in champion-ship history to successfully defend his title.“Before the round I knew I needed to beat the course and shoot a low number. I didn’t want it to be a question whether I won or not and I had to leave every-thing out there,” Holmgren said. “I was walking fast with a mission in my mind. I knew what I needed to do and had the momentum to do it. The putts just weren’t falling.“To shoot 66 like Clay did, you have to put yourself below the hole from anywhere in the fairway just to give yourself a chance to make putts and get on a run of three or four birdies. I put myself in position to do that, which was really exciting, but I didn’t finish off the holes. I love playing on big stages like this and I happen to play well when there’s a championship on the line.”Another strong championship for Israelson furthers the argument of his status as one of the state’s strongest amateur golfers. With five state victo-ries to his credit prior to this season, Israelson began the summer by ad-vancing from U.S. Open Local Qualifying at StoneRidge Golf Club before defeating Parker Reddig to claim his first MGA Players’ Championship.Israelson came up shy of becoming only the third player to win the Players’ Championship and the State Amateur in the same season. Tom Lehman was the first in 1981, followed by Andrew Paulson in 2006 and Trent Peterson in 2008.“I thought the pins were the most difficult today. I struck the ball really solidly and put myself in good positions. I was leaking oil and the end,” Israelson said. “It stinks I didn’t get a win this week, but it’s a good thing to build off of. You learn a lot of lessons out there and you learn a lot more from a loss than you do from a win.“I really like where my game is at, I’m trending in the right direction. I drove the ball really well and was more confident with driver this week than I have been this whole summer. I managed myself really well.”University of Kansas golfer and former Minnetonka High School standout Ben Sigel tied a tournament-low Wednesday, shooting 6-under 66 to jump into a tie for fourth place at 2-under par 214 with University of Minnesota golfer Noah Rasinski and Florida State University’s Parker Reddig.Ian Simonich, who will be a junior at Moorhead High School this fall, finished in a tie for seventh at 1-under 215 with Troy Johnson, who carded a final-round 70 Wednesday.

A Late Eagle Boosts Kucera to First Career Win, Holding off Holmgren and Israelson at State Amateur By Nick Hunter (published July 17, 2019)

BYRON, Minn. – A day after shooting a tournament-low 66, Clay Kucera needed a late eagle and a pair of key up-and-downs to save par, shooting a final-round 72 Wednesday, fighting off multiple charges from both Van Holmgren and Andrew Israelson to earn his first state victory at the 116th Minnesota Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Somerby Golf Club.Overcoming a rocky start to the final round, Kucera dropped his eagle chance from 30 feet at the par-3 15th and scrambled to save par at the 16th and 17th, extending his lead to two strokes before a par on the final hole made him the first player since Eric Deutsch in 2004 to win the championship after making the field as an alternate.“This is big for confidence,” Kucera said of his win Wednesday. “I’ve played well in some tournaments, but haven’t found myself on top of the leader-board at the end of the day. To win in a field like this, which is full of great competition, proves that I can do that against the best players in the state.“My swing has been close and my short game has been getting better over the last couple of weeks. It all clicked this week and the course fit my eye when I came out for the practice rounds.”The 20-year-old Kucera traded two bogeys with two birdies over his first four holes before stumbling with back-to-back bogeys at the sixth and sev-enth holes. An up-and-down at the eighth kept Kucera tied with Israelson and provided some momentum to the final nine holes, where Kucera made consecutive pars before his eagle at 15.“I hit a good shot in [on No. 8], the wind just blew it off a little bit. I read it like a putt, had a good line and was trying to make it. I cleaned it up and that’s where the round kind of got going,” he said.“I got a little more comfortable,” Kucera said of beginning his back nine Wednesday, shooting 7-under 29 the day before. “I was able to hit some greens and got the putter rolling a little bit.”Watching Holmgren hit a 3-wood inside of six feet at the short par-4 15th, Kucera opted for driver and rolled his ball to the back edge, right of the cup. Dropping his right-to-left breaker, Kucera regained a one-shot lead before increasing his lead at the par-3 17th.Israelson’s tee shot landed short of the green and rolled back into the penal-ty area. He wasted little time taking off his shoes and punched his second out to the middle of the green. Both Israelson and Holmgren two-putted for bogey to fall two shots back of the lead.“Going into 17, I still had tee honors, which is kind of love-hate because you want to go first and lead the way, but the wind started to pick up and I wasn’t too sure how to play it,” Kucera said. “It rolled just off the front and it was a pretty easy bump-and-run.”Reaching the final green in two, Kucera three-putted from 40 feet to col-lect his first state victory, shooting 7-under par 209, claiming a one-stroke victory over Holmgren and Israelson.Kucera’s win Wednesday is the best finish at a state championship since he placed fourth individually at the Class AAA championship in 2016 as a junior at Chaska High School. After six years of varsity golf in high school, Kucera began his collegiate career at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, Calif., before transfer-ring to Iowa Western Community College this season, where he played in
