YOUTH EDUCATION
Our Roots of Jazz program is currently in its twentieth year of teaching students the origins of Jazz music. Musician and educator Frank Leto gives a lively
presentation of music from Africa, Cuba, Brazil and the United States. The music is neatly woven into a
fabric of historical narrative, highlighting the cultural blending that has made Jazz a uniquely American art form. The Program is presented free at elementary
schools throughout Albuquerque.
Empowerment Through Music (ETM) is the New Mexico Jazz Workshop’s community outreach
program that provides access to music education to underserved, at-risk, low income, and incarcerated
youth. With a dual focus on both prevention (South Valley Band Project) and intervention (Digital
Technology Project), young people in economically depressed areas of Albuquerque and in the juvenile justice system are able to learn music in supervised, supportive environments. The goals of the program are to increase self-esteem and pro-social behavior,
develop musical proficiency skills, and prevent/reduce contact with the juvenile justice system. ETM wishes to thank our sponsors, The Berklee School of Music, Albuquerque Public Schools, Bernalillo County, The
United Way of Central NM, The Urban Enhancement Trust Fund and the Hancock Family Foundation
Can you believe it? For the past four
decades the New Mexico Jazz Workshop has
been bringing great Jazz to New Mexico and
keeping Jazz alive through its education
programs for youth and adults.
Over the past 40 years, the NMJW has
brought you performances from Jazz giants like
Art Pepper, Dexter Gordon, Diana Krall, Ramsey
Lewis, Kevin Eubanks and many more.
Our education programs have grown
from a handful of lessons to great programs like
The Roots of Jazz, Empowerment through
Music, Real Book Jam, The Jazz Intensive and
an incredible array of adult education programs
that allow people the opportunity to find their
music.
Beginning now and continuing
throughout 2016, the New Mexico Jazz
Workshop will be celebrating in a big way, with
concerts, special events and a 40th anniversary
blowout planned for Spring of 2016.
We are also asking for your help. As
part of the “quad” we are putting together a
commemorative book with photos, artwork and
remembrances of the past forty years from the
founders, members, artists and patrons of the
Jazz Workshop. Do you have a memory or
photo you’d like to share? Contact us at
Our new
education
coordinator is Elena Maietta. She comes to us
with an incredible resume that includes an MA in
Choral Conducting, A BA in Vocal Performance
is an experienced professional, working as First
Soprano with the New Mexico Symphonic
Chorus, and with the On Q Chorus in
Albuquerque.
She is a National Hispanic Scholar, and
winner of the Delta Omicron Memorial Music
Scholarship from Ohio State University. She’s
even directed a little theater. We are very
fortunate to have her as part of our staff.
We have also brought on board Linda
Schab who will be interning for us this year and
handling the marketing for the NMJW. She is
pursuing her Masters in International Marketing
Management and is well traveled, studying at
the Berlin School of Economics and at Angela
Ruskin University at Cambridge.
Charlie Hayden
passed away in July of
2014, and this is his final
gift to us. It completes
his collaboration with
pianist Gonzalo
Rubalcaba that began in
1986.
Hayden was not only a legendary bass
player who worked with great artists like Ornett
Coleman, John Coltrane and Chet Baker. It was
his seminal work with Keith Jarrett in the late
60s and early 70s that brought him to
prominence an a brilliant arranger.
The music on this CD is amazing and
truly encompasses Hayden’s best work as a
composer, arranger and player.
This is
Ramsey Lewis’
80th CD. Amazing
work from a man
who helped make
jazz mainstream
with hits like The In
Crowd and Hang
on Sloopy.
For this release he has re-recorded
some old tracks from his 1974 Sun Goddess CD
and paired them with five new original tunes. His
gift for turning pop tunes into jazz standards
continues with new arrangements of Stevie
Wonder’s Livin’ for the City and the Stylistics
Betch By Golly Wow.
Nils
returns with
his latest CD
Alley Cat.
The German
born guitarist,
moved to LA in
the mid 80s
and began
working as a
session
guitarist for
everyone from the Temptations to Rick Braun.
His breakout CD, Blue Planet featured
George Benson (with whom he co- wrote Keep
Rollin’ for Benson’s 1998 Stand Together CD),
Nathan East and Gerald Albright. In 2004, his
massive crossover hit Pacific Coast Highway
brought him into view as not only a talented
guitarist but as a brilliant songwriter, producer
and arranger.
Yes, that Billy Vera. Before he found
fame as the backdrop to Alex Keaton’s marriage
proposal on the TV Show, Vera was long known
as a player in
the music
industry. He
wrote for songs
for Dolly
Parton, Ricky
Nelson and
Barbara Lewis,
He is an actor (The Doors), producer (Lou
Rawls) and his breakout hit At This Moment was
recently recorded by Michael Buble.
This 2013 release has been just been
re-released on the Varese Sarabande label and
is worth a listen. It features classic R&B tunes
including Since I Fell for You and Cherry
arranged for big band. Vera continues to tour
with his Big Band.
Rock Candy Funk Party is not your
father’s jazz, taking classic 70s and 80’s funk,
R&B and Jazz and putting a new spin on it
energetic, vibrant
and features blues
journeyman Joe
Bonamassa,
bassist Mike Merrit,
guitarist Ron de
Jesus and drummer
Tal Bergman who
also produced the
CD
There are
also great guest performances by Randy
Brecker, James Campagnola and Renaldo Neto
(sax) and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, This CD was
made for the pure fun of playing music and a
must have for your collection.

Dave Grusin is a Grammy and
Academy Award winning composer. Over the
past thirty years he has scored countless films
beginning in the 1960s with The Graduate which
won an Oscar for director Mike Nichols.
He worked in television throughout most
of the late 60s and early 70s for television,
conducting the Andy Williams orchestra
composing iconic television themes for shows
like Baretta, St. Elsewhere and the Wild, Wild
West.
In 1976, he created GRP Records with
partner Larry Rosen and brought jazz to the
forefront of American music. GRP introduced the
world to great artists like Jon Lucien, Chick
Corea, Diane Schurr and Spyro Gyra. In 1982,
the company went digital, pioneering what would
become the standard for today’s music library.
Grusin has worked with nearly every
major artist on earth including James Taylor,
Paul Simon, Quincy Jones, Billy Joel, Patti
Austin…the list goes on and on.
Born in Littleton Colorado and educated
at UC Boulder, he has never lost his love for the
clean air and high mountains of the southwest.
He currently splits his time between Los
Angeles, where he continues to work in film and
Santa Fe where he makes his home. He
continues to contribute to music and works
frequently with New Mexico artists, helping them
to establish themselves in the film and television
community. Photo by Bruce Dulap.

We are sad to discover that Toronto drummer Archie Alleyne passed away June
8th, 2015 at the age of 82. He played with some legendary artists including Billie
Holiday, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz and Ben Webster.
In 1967 he fell asleep at the wheel on the way home from a gig and the resulting
car accident left him unable to continue playing drums. It wasn't until 1982 when
he was able to fight back from his injuries that he began playing Jazz again. During
his hiatus from music he opened up a five star restaurant in Toronto. Upon his
return to music, he led the way in the Toronto Jazz scene. He will be missed.
Jazz giant Ornette Coleman passed away on July 11th in
his Manhatten home. He was 85. Born in Fort Worth,
Texas, the self-taught saxman is credited with liberating
jazz from conventional harmony.
He took improvisation to a whole new level. His
creative genius affected musicians from all levels
including Jerry Garcia, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.
He reinvented himself yet again in the mid 1970s, going
electric. His honors include a Pulitzer Prize, two
Guggenheims, numerous honorary doctorates and a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master
honor.
Drumstick pioneer Vic Firth had died at the age of 85. Fed
up with the lackluster quality of drumsticks which had not
evolved since the 1920s, he revolutionized the industry,
customizing skick for individual players. Firth first got the
idea that drumsticks needed to be re-designed while playing
with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He founded his
company in 1963 with the idea that drumsticks should be
configured to give it a response to the drums and the
cymbals. “Its shape has an effect on the quality of the sound
and even slight variations in the manufacturing process can
greatly influence the result”, he said in an interview in 1988. News of his death garnerd great responses
from drummers on every level.
