LIVE IS ALWAYS BETTER!

2016-17 Season June-July Playbill

Page 2: LIVE IS ALWAYS BETTER!

At Highmark, we understand that art can heal. Creating or experiencing it can relax and soothe. It can enliven and inspire. That’s why we’re

a longstanding supporter of arts organizations in our communities. And why we nurture the arts at an early age through

childhood arts education programs. Let’s be open to more artistic experiences. Let’s be healthy.

We have an 80-year legacy of supporting the arts.

Looking to the future, let’s celebrate how art

can keep us healthy.

What if I told you these labels once adorned greatvintage wines? Perhaps even rare bottles ofBurgundy? Well, that would be a lie! Theyare part of an ingenious con, a counterfeit winescheme concocted by a charismatic charlatan.A wine forger! In 2012, “Dr. Conti” was caughtred-handed by the FBI, having photocopiedthousands of original wine labels on his color

This collection of confiscated vintage wine labels is among the more than 40 examples of forgeries and counterfeit objects featured in the exhibition, many of which have been at the center of major scandals and court cases. Courtesy of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Office.

Grammy®-winning new wave singer-songwriter Joe

Jackson burst onto the music scene with his first hit single “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” in 1979. His debut album, Look Sharp!, enjoyed wide critical success and has been named by Rolling Stone as one of the best debut albums of all time. Since then, he has recorded 19 studio albums and received five Grammy® nominations, and won the Grammy® for Best Pop Instrumental Album in 2001. At the center of Jackson’s nearly forty-year performance career is his versatility across genres, with influences from pop, jazz, new wave and classical. The ever-restless musician traveled the world to record his most recent collection of original songs, Fast Forward, which features four sets

of four songs recorded in four different cities—New York, New Orleans, Berlin, and Amsterdam —which has been received to critical acclaim.

Nashville hitmaker Jerrod Niemann is one of country

music’s most original and talented innovators. Jerrod’s new single is a duet with his good friend and labelmate Lee Brice, called “A Little More Love” and is produced by Jerrod, Lee and Jimmie Lee Sloas. Jerrod is also adding the finishing touches to his forthcoming album on Curb Records which will follow his RIAA Platinum-certified multi-week No. 1 smash, “Drink to That All Night,” from his High Noon album, on which Niemann co-wrote eight of the 13 tracks. Niemann’s chart-topping major-label debut, 2010’s Judge Jerrod & The Hung Jury, produced the No. 1 smash and RIAA-certified Platinum digital single, “Lover, Lover,” and the Top 5 and RIAA-certified Gold digital single, “What Do You Want.”

Second release Free The Music featured the Top 15 single “Shinin’ On Me” and the poignant ballad “Only God Could Love You More.” Niemann has quickly become a fan and industry favorite, earning award nominations from the Academy of Country Music, the Country Music Association and CMT while headlining his own shows and touring with such artists as Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley, and Keith Urban.

GENERAL INFORMATION

GET TO KNOW THE GRANDTHE MISSION OF THE GRAND

The Grand Opera House entertains and engages its communities through exceptional, diverse live performances and educational outreach. Committed to broad accessibility and sound financial management, The Grand enhances regional quality of life and contributes to a thriving downtown Wilmington. As steward of a historic Delaware theater that is home to several valued arts groups, The Grand affirms the arts’ vital role within our communities to promote greater understanding and lift the human spirit.

THE GRAND LADY OF MARKET STREET

The opulent and historic Grand Opera House has been a landmark for the residents of Wilmington and the surrounding region for more than 140 years. Opened in 1871 as a home for the Grand Lodge of the Masons for the lordly sum of $100,000, The Grand has played host to thousands of renowned entertainers and performing artists over the years, including Ethel Barrymore, Buffalo Bill Cody, John Philip Sousa, political cartoonist Thomas Nast, and the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University.

Designed by Delaware architect Thomas Dixon in the Second Empire style, The Grand featured a distinctive façade of cast iron adorned with Masonic images. The first season of operation featured more than seventy performances that included everything from serious dramas to minstrel shows to lectures and exhibitions. Tickets that season cost a dollar for a reserved seat. Boxes were an extravagant $5 but seated four.

In 1909, The Grand was briefly converted into a regular stop on the vaudeville circuit and then transitioned into a movie theater. Eclipsed by the more modernly opulent and larger Aldine next door, The Grand was eventually reduced to screening second-run horror films and Westerns. The building was allowed to fall into decline and finally, sadly closed its doors in 1967.

“TO DESTROY IT WOULD BE A CRIME, TO RESTORE IT WOULD BE A TRIUMPH”So said Bill Frank of the Morning News, and other prominent citizens of Wilmington were thinking the same. On December 22, 1971, the hundredth anniversary of its original grand opening, The Grand Opera House was again packed with people and excitement, as plans were unveiled to renovate the theater to its former splendor.

Over the next few years, a thoughtful and complete restoration was undertaken. The Grand was rededicated on February 1, 1973, and began again to present the finest performing artists from around the world. Delaware historian described the project as “a Cinderella story, the most spectacularly successful preservation effort in Wilmington’s history.”

Next door, the Aldine Theater, once The Grand’s rival, had fallen on similar hard times. Closed in 1970, most of the building was razed in 1992. With the help of friends and philanthropists, The Grand acquired the lots and opened a companion theater building in 2000. The baby grand, a cozy 300-seat proscenium theater, occupies the first floor, with offices, rehearsal rooms and teaching spaces extending several floors above.

THE GRAND TODAY

The Grand and baby grand are alive with artistic activity. The Grand presents more than 75 shows each season, ranging from symphony orchestras and ballets to the latest rock and comedy stars, with jazz, folk, and family artists as well. The Delaware Symphony, Opera Delaware, and First State Ballet Theatre are all in residence at The Grand, presenting full schedules in each of their disciplines. Between The Grand, its resident performing companies, and rentals, the building hosts more than 200 events a year bringing more than 120,000 people into downtown Wilmington and through its doors.

In addition to the full- and part-time professional staff, The Grand is ably supported by the Board of Directors, Grand Trustees, and an extensive volunteer corps who usher and perform other ongoing services for The Grand’s valued patrons.
