Winter Safety Tips

When the temperature drops, older adultsrun a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to the weather, including hypothermia, frostbite, and falls in ice andsnow. Here are a few precautions everyoneshould take this time of year.

Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature drops to a dangerous level. Yourbody temperature can drop when you are outin the cold for an extended time because it begins to lose heat quickly. To prevent hypothermia, don’t stay outside for a long period of time, keep indoor temperature at 65or warmer, stay dry, layer your clothing, andcover your mouth and nose when outside.

Frostbite is most likely to occur on bodyparts farthest away from your heart. Commonplaces include your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers and toes. To prevent hypothermia, allparts of your body should be covered whenyou go out in the cold. If frostbite occurs, runthe affected area under warm (not hot) water.

Strenuous activities like shoveling snowmay put too much strain on your heart. Shoveling can also be dangerous if you haveproblems with balance or have thin bones.

It is easy to slip and fall in the winter. Makesure steps and walkways are clear before youwalk. Clear away snow and salt your walkwaysat home, or hire someone to do it. Wear bootswith non-skid soles to prevent slipping. If youuse a cane, replace the rubber tip before it isworn smooth.

Winter is an especially important time to bevigilant when driving because road conditionsand weather may not be optimal. Rememberyour cell phone when you drive in bad weather, and always let someone know where you aregoing and when you should be expected back.Stock your car with basic emergency suppliessuch as a first aid kit, blankets, extra warmclothes, booster cables, windshield scraper, shovel, rock salt or a bag of sand or cat litter, water, flashlight and map.
