the residents for Christmas cards,
Christmas gifts, and Christmas and New
Year wishes. We enjoyed the holiday and

1. What types of arthritis affects your hands?
a. Osteoarthritis: due to degenerative changes in
cartilage
b. Rheumatoid: result of autoimmune condition;
body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue
that protects the joints
2. Osteoarthritis Symptoms
a. Bony lumps at middle finger joint
b. Bony lumps at finger joint closest to fingernail
c. Pain deep under base of thumb
d. Difficulty pinching and gripping items
3. Rheumatoid Arthritis
a. Pain at wrist and finger knuckles
b. Deformities of wrist and fingers where they
will not straighten
c. Unexplained fatigue
d. Flu-like achiness throughout the body
4. How is it diagnosed? Doctors may ask:
a. When did the symptoms start?
b. What makes them worse?
c. What makes the symptoms better?
d. Have you had injuries to your hands?
e. Other symptoms: fever, weight loss, rash,
unexplained fatigue, dry eyes or mouth?
f. X-Ray and physical exam for abnormalities;
like slightly crooked fingers
5. Home Remedies
a. Hand exercises
i. Making loose fist and opening fingers fully
to strengthen them
ii. Bending fingers slowly and carefully, then
fully straightening out again
iii. Placing hand on hot flat surface with fingers
extended and slowly lifting each finger off
the surface. Hold finger at highest point for
3-5 seconds
b. Hot and Cold Therapy
i. Applying ice to swollen joints for 10
minutes can reduce swelling
ii. Heat therapy can ease stiff joints
c. Splinting
i. Wearing a protective brace on the hand
resembling a fingerless glove
6. Medical Treatments
a. Ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory drugs
b. Oral Steroids or steroid shots
c. Cortisone injections
7. Prevention
a. Monitor joints for signs of the disease
b. Stay active, reduce sugar intake, not smoking

(Nita) traveled to
Hanna, Indiana to
meet Lilly for the first
time over Christmas!
Dixie Sherry-
Marie Bowden is
Dixie’s 21st great
grandchild. Dixie was
born at 11 PM on
Saturday, December
2nd. She was 20
inches long and
weighed 6 pounds and
9 ounces. Dixie has
turned the family of 9
into a family of 10!

Thanks for our volunteers for Deck the Halls. We had
fun decorating for Christmas and drinking eggnog and
eating Rise N’ Roll donuts!
The Hobart Middle School fourth and fifth grade
Brickie Leaders came to sing Christmas Carols and
donated 12 boxes of supplies for residents.
