Choreographer’s Note:I wanted to make a fun piece, for my mom because she has sat through more productions about college kid angst than she would have liked (to everyone I’ve danced for, this isn’t personal, she cited her own youth as the source of distaste for this genre). Reparté is characterized by humorous and witty interactions between performers (I thought so anyway- but then again, a lot of things are funny at late night rehearsals running on coffee and bubble gum). I developed movement based on romantic relationships, then modified the movement to exaggerate each dancer’s idiosyncratic personality and movement habits. Most of the script material is from The Sandman: Brief Lives, and the rest is original. Thank you to my dancers for their time, effort, and creativity; thank you Kaoru Koike for your flexibility and good nature, and thank you Portia Njoku for all the aforementioned things and more. Also thanks to Gregg Geoffroy for helping me hash out a title and listening to me talk out my ideas. David Grenke, Della Davidson, and Randee Paufve – thanks for paying attention to me, it matter(s)ed. And thank you to Toni Alejandra for your generosity and good nature.

Many thanks to the faculty and staff at the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance. Special thanks to Della Davidson for her encouragement and faith in me and David Grenke for his constant guidance and giving of information. Kaitlin, Jessica, Robert and Isaac, thanks for being great designers and of course, my dancers - Farin, Colleen, Tyler, Vivian and Robert, thank you for bringing life to this piece. She would like to thank everyone working on the show (especially her fabulous ASMs), her ever-supportive friends and family, as well as David Grenke, Darrell Winn, and Kristin Orlando for their help, advice, and patience in helping her through this process.

Life Like Tales

Choreography by VIVIAN THORNE

Choreographer’s Note:LIFE LIKE TALES is the peculiar product of many ideas about the nature of theatre, performance, and human interactions. The process, much like the piece, has been a strange and amusing journey going places I didn't entirely expect. The piece was influenced by a handful of artists for whom I hold an absurd amount of admiration, especially Edward Gorey, Wes Anderson, and Pina Bausch. I was also lucky enough to find myself working with an amazing cast of human beings who bravely indulged my many whims in the studio. I am also eternally indebted to the many people who have helped, and continue to help, me along the treacherous road that is being an artist. To Dave Grenke, Vicki Thorne, Dave Hollowell, Della Davidson, Tom Munn, Ms. Totah, and everyone else who has had so many wonderful conversations with me about art and life. To the vast and ever expanding empire that is my family, and to Kevin, Michael, and the M Street Boys (includes you Andy) thank you for accepting me and never letting me get too comfortable.
