The Messenger Lifting Up Jesus In The Heart Of Jacksonville Centenary United Methodist Church DECEMBER 2021 “It’s beginning to ‘feel’ a lot like Christmas.” These are almost the lyrics to the famous Christmas song written in 1951 by Meredith Willson. I took out look and added feel, because last year didn’t feel as much like Christmas as other years. I say it feels more like Christmas, because this year, many Christmas events at Centenary are returning. Oh yeah, and we will be together in person for each of the Advent Sundays leading up to Christmas. All of this was missing last year. Welcome back to the feel of Christmas! Do we need all these extras to celebrate Christmas? No. They just help us get into the spirit of the season. That is a shame, because if we would simply adapt those Christmas feelings to our everyday lives, we would always ‘feel’ like Christmas. Too often we set aside those feelings along with the new slippers we just received. I am certainly nor the first to encourage the Christ-like sentiments of Christmas to remain fresh and alive inside of us. Poets, songwriters, authors and even the Lord has reminded us to keep Christ alive everyday. The Grinch couldn’t do it and neither did Covid, nothing stops Christmas from coming. Christmas cannot be stopped, except by the choices that we make. When we make the choice to ignore our calling from God and pledge allegiance to anything else, we prevent Christmas from coming into our hearts. I am sure would jump at the chance to wear a sweatshirt that reads, “I choose to stop Christmas from coming!” Would you wear such an article of clothing? When our actions, thoughts or deeds do not align with Jesus we are just as obvious to our Creator as if we were wearing a shirt with those words emblazoned on it. Instead, let us make a choice to be as involved with Christmas as we can be this year. I understand many of you are still being cautious with your health and that is okay. I am not asking for you to step out if your health is a concern. The Messenger Lifting Up Jesus In The Heart Of Jacksonville

Centenary United Methodist Church DECEMBER 2021

“It’s beginning to ‘feel’ a lot like Christmas.” These are almost the lyrics to the famous Christmas song written in 1951 by Meredith Willson. I took out look and added feel, because last year didn’t feel as much like Christmas as other years. I say it feels more like Christmas, because this year, many Christmas events at Centenary are returning.

The biggest welcome back is the Christmas Eve Service, December 24, 6:30 p.m. The church is also having an in-person Advent Bible Study, an in-person Blue Christmas Service at Wesley Chapel on December 21 at 7:00 p.m. The

Children will be presenting a Christmas program on Sunday, December 12, 4:00.

Advent Offering 2021Each year Centenary Mission’s Committee

designates our Advent Offering to a different mission project. This year’s donations will be given to Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House in East St. Louis because they have a special need at this time.

Lessie Bates Davis Neighborhood House is a United Methodist community center whose mission is to improve the quality of life for residents of all ages by providing quality early childhood development services, comprehensive youth services including after school programs, individual and family support services, employment and job services, services to older adu l t s inc lud ing mea l s , and economic development services including a food pantry, and comprehensive emergency services. The goals of LBDNH is to help move individuals and families out of poverty.

Find out more about the work that LBDNH does at https://lessiebatesdavis.org/

There will be a basket in the Narthex for donations or checks/cash may be put in the offering plate designated for the Advent Offering. Make checks to Centenary UMC with Advent offering in the memo line.

Bell Ringers neededWe still have open times for volunteers to ring

bells for the Salvation Army at Midland Farm and Home on Thursday, December 2 and Saturday, December 18 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you can help ring, sign the sheet in the Narthex or call the church office.

Missions

MMDC VolunteersFour Centenary members (Jane Lair, Cheryl TerHark, Rhoda Walker rand Martha Vaché) recently spent a morning volunteering at the Midwest Mission Distribution Center east of Chatham. We would like to encourage others to join us in the future. There are a variety tasks for men, woman, and older youth. Except for a small staff all the work at MMDC is done by volunteers. MMDC collects, sorts, and distributes supplies to those in need both in the United States and all over the world. In addition to needing donations for many different kits, MMDC also accepts donations of sewing machines and bicycles. MMDC recycles everything possible including used wooden bleachers donated by schools that are installing new bleachers. The lumber in the bleachers is used to make simple teacher and/or student desks. (This is great volunteer opportunity for men!)If you are interested in volunteering at MMDC, let Martha Vache know so we can schedule a date for a group from Centenary. Advance registration is required. Find out more about what MMDC does at their website: http://www.midwestmission.org/.

Warming Center VolunteersGreetings former T.E.O.S.A. volunteers.

Hopefully everyone has fared well since I last communicated with you!  You will all hopefully be happy to learn that New Directions has again opened their Warming/Cooling Center for shelter assistance to homeless individuals in our area, as of July, 2021, after having been closed for 16 months!  And, they intend to stay open.

At the bi-anual T.E.O.S.A. Board meeting, the T.E.O.S.A. Board decided to support and not compete with New Directions this winter. It was further decided that we would use some of our re-start money to help fund their program as long as they continue to keep their shelter open during the months of November, 2021-March, 2022.

We will be sending a check to New Directions for $500 each month for 5 months.  In addition to our financial support, I would like to encourage anyone who is willing and able, to consider volunteering your time as well.

The Warming/Cooling Center director said that the time she is in greatest need of assistance is from 6-9 p.m., as this is the time she does intakes, serves the meals, monitors showering and laundry and helps their overnight guests get settled in.  They are running at half capacity (maximum of 10) due to Covid concerns, and have had no incidents of Covid so far and would like to keep it that way.

If you are interested in volunteering, please be encouraged to call Sarah at 217-370-0705 or New Directions at 217-271-1014.  Thanks again for all your hard work in the past and thanks in advance to those who choose to help the Warming/Cooling Center this winter.

NOTE: Please do not give Sarah's number out to directly to homeless individuals, give them New Direction's number instead.

One ServiceReminder

Please do not forget to mark your calendars on the change of worship times for

December 26, 2021 and January 2, 2022.

There will only be one service on both of these Sundays and the time is 10:00 a.m.

There will be no Sunday School for these two weeks.

parlor.

SPIRIT CIRCLESpirit Circle will wait until the new year to

UMW Makes Future Plans Centenary UMW officers met in early November to make plans for 2022. UMW Sunday will be held on January 30. It is time to update our UMW handbooks for 2022. Circles and UMW members are asked to let Brenda Lane know of any changes in contact information as soon as possible.

UMW Reading ProgramThe Unstoppable Garrett Morgan by Joan

Dicicco is in the Education for Mission category for the years  2021-2022. It can be borrowed from the Jacksonville Public Library through interlibrary loan.

"If a man puts something to block your way, the first time you go around it, the second time you go over  it, and the third time you go through it".  Living by these words made inventor and entrepreneur Garrett Morgan unstoppable.

Growing up in Kentucky, the son of freed slaves, young and curious Garrett was eager for life beyond his family's farm.  This compelling picture book tells the story of his ingenuity and tenacity that overcame racial barriers as he forged a career as a successful businessman and inventor.

Another 2021-2022 selection  is from the category of Leadership Development.  Edited by L i s a C h a r l e y b o y a n d M a r y B e t h Leatherdale,  #Not Your Princess: Voices of Native American Women can be borrowed from the Jacksonville Public Library through interlibrary loan. Whether looking back to a troubled past or welcoming a hopeful future, the powerful voices of Indigenous women across North America resound in this eclectic collection of poems, essays, interviews and art.  Stories of abuse, humiliation and stereotyping are countered by the voices of passionate women making themselves heard and demanding change.

Sometimes angry, often reflective, but always strong, the women in this book will give readers insight into the lives of women who, for so long, have been virtually invisible.

Why I like being a UMW member

My memories of UMW go back to when I was 4 or 5 years old.  No, I was not a member then but my mother, Lavora Gray, was.  She was a member of the Ruth Circle and would take me with her to some of their meetings. I remember them making stuffed animals and quilts for the bazaar and I remember they always enjoying their time together and laughing a lot!     I joined the Sarah Circle when my children were very young.  Some of us would bring our children to our meetings which was nice for us and nice for our  children to get to know the other the children.

It was a joy to get to know these other young mothers as well as members of the other circles and to work with them together on UMW activities such as the Salad Luncheons and learning about and supporting missionaries, Cunningham Home, Chaddock, Baby Fold and others.     Most of our Sarah Circle members are now members of For Heaven Circle and are still meeting regularly, supporting UMW in various ways, and have become lifelong friends.

My involvement in UMW has been a blessing!  Thank You, Debbie Belzer. Please see pictures at right.

Old UMW program books needed

For historical purposes the UMW has tried to keep copies of our program books for each year. However, we are missing copies for several years.

Please let the church office or any of the UMW officers know, if you have a copy of the program

book for any of the following years: before 1958; 1967 and 1968; 1970 to 1973; 1996

to 2007; 2010 and 2011; and 2014.

PASTOR CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE

If your soul hasn’t felt alive for the the past 20 months because the Spirit of Christmas Past is still too fresh in your memory or you are still worried about the Spirit of Christmas Future, then come on back and get connected to the Spirit of Christmas Present.

God is alive in you through the only spirit that matters, the Holy Spirit. Allow God to work inside your soul and help bring you back to life again, or even more alive than you imagined possible.

God is alive to make us alive. The opponent only wants to steal and rob you of life. I know that not every one of our Christmas events has returned yet, but we are seeing the light. I invite you to come back to the light of Christ this Christmas.

Not merely because we have a fuller calendar, that is wonderful, but because we have a Savior who wants to fill us. If we chose to stop Christmas then we will never know what God has in mind for us this year. If you are able, I invite you and your family and friends to come back to a Christmas season at church that will remind you of better Christmases of the past.

“Do not fear,” says Jesus, “I have come to bring you life to the fullest.”

Boy Scout NewsPastor’s Note: Centenary is the Charter for Boy Scout Troop 103. In an effort to help keep you informed of the Boy Scouts activities, their activities will be shared in our monthly Messenger. Please enjoy what your troop is up to recently. More Boy Scout News on page 12.

Scouts BSA is the traditional Scouting experience for youth in the fifth grade through high school. Service, community engagement, and leadership development become increasingly important parts of the program as Scouts lead their own activities and work their way toward earning Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout.Scouts BSA has a lot to offer, but don’t let the number of merit badges scare you away. With exposure to a uniquely hands-on learning experience and the opportunity to earn merit badges reflecting each Scout’s budding interests, youth unlock a world of discovery around them and forge a path for the future. Troop 103 meets every Thursday at 6:30 PM at the Jacksonville Municipal Airport.

If you are interested in joining contact Nate Hoyle at [email protected]. Our MissionThe mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.Scout OathOn my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.Scout LawA Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Troop 103 focuses on volunteering in the community at several different events. In 2021 the scouts have been able to volunteer at The Prairie Land Heritage Ham and Bean Lunch, The Walk to End Alzheimer’s and help set up the traveling WWII Memorial. If you have an event looking for volunteers, contact Erin Howe at [email protected].

Another focus for Troop 103 is outdoor adventure. The scouts attended Summer Camp at camp Bunn this year. While attending they can earn several different merit badges, learn about camping, cooking and how to responsibly enjoy the outdoors. For 2022 the scouts are planning a trip to Colorado for summer camp. To ensure all scouts can attend the troop has been fundraising. Fundraisers include the annual popcorn sale, selling Christmas Wreaths, and the American Flag Program.

If you are between 5th grade and 18 years old and interested in joining you can attend one of our weekly meetings Thursday at 6:30 PM at the Jacksonville Municipal Airport or contact Nate Hoyle at [email protected] or 217-491-6283.
