ASCE Adopts New Post-Disaster Assessment Manual
The Society has created and approved a new manual that outlines policies and pro-cedures to be used when conducting engi-neering assessments of the damage caused by natural and human-caused disasters. The Post-Disaster Assessment Manual was developed by ASCE's Task Committee on Engineering Review Procedures in response to an independent task force's rec-ommendation that the Society's procedures for such assessments be compiled into a single, readily accessible source. The task force, led by former U.S. Rep. Sherwood Boehlert, the former chairman of the House Science Committee, was commissioned in late 2007 to review how the Society partici-pates in engineering studies of national significance. Conference Wraps With Light Hearts, Generous Hearts
The Society's 139th Annual Confer-ence in Kansas City, Mo., came to a close with laughs, plus a desire by members to help the less fortunate. Comedian, pundit and actor Ben Stein provided the laughs at the closing general session breakfast, while also stressing that investment in infrastruc-ture, and more of it, is what has and will keep our nation great. Sunday, members volunteered their time and labor at Heart-land Therapeutic Riding in nearby Stillwell, Kan., in the annual post-conference com-munity service event. Heartland provides therapy to children and adults with disabili-ties through interaction with horses.
Next year's 140th Conference is set for Las Vegas — mark your 2010 calendar for Oct. 21–23.

Engineers Week 2010
Greetings. I hope you all had a Joyous Holiday Season and I wish all of you much success and
prosperity in the New Year. This year’s Engineers Week is planned to be full of activities and
good times. I hope all of you take the time to participate in the recognition and celebration of our
great profession. It is also a great time to give back to our community as a representation of how the engineering profession supports and helps the people in the community we live in every day.
On January 16th
and January 30th
there are two outreach projects, Builders Care and Habitat for
Humanity, which are perfect opportunities for us to give back to our community. I encourage you to come out and participate in these worthwhile programs.
Engineers Week planning is in full swing and I would like to thank all of my committee members and their societies for all their support and hard work to make the Northeast Florida Engineers
Week the best in the state. There are many different activities and meetings, from the Kick Off
Luncheon and UNF Vendor Showcase on February 12th, to the annual Golf Tournament on
February 15th, to the USACOE Career Day and MATHCOUNTS on February 19
th, to the Awards
Banquet on February 20th, just to name a few. This year the Awards Banquet will be a full night
of entertainment with a great speaker, Dr. Bernard Amadei, the founder of Engineers Without
Borders, as well as recognition of the accomplishments of our local professionals, followed by a night of dancing with music provided by a DJ. I hope to see you all at the event. For a listing of
all the events, meetings and the dates and times, please visit the Northeast Florida Engineers
Week website at www.nefl-eweek.org.
This year I had the honor of participating
in receiving the Proclamation for
Engineers Week from Mayor John Peyton of the City of Jacksonville.
During our visit, Mayor Peyton thanked
all of us for the contributions that engineers make to the city and our
country, and encouraged us to reach out
and support our youth to follow our
footsteps and become engineers. Mayor Peyton recognized the importance that
engineering plays as an economic engine
for our community through technological advancements and design, and would like
to see the continued growth in this from
our youth. I could not agree with him more. I know all of our societies have programs to mentor our youth and encourage them to become tomorrow’s engineers. If you have not participated in
these programs before, I encourage you to do so. Our country needs more engineers for our
future.
It has been an honor for me to serve as this year’s Committee Chair for Engineers Week and I
hope to see all of you at the many exciting events planned this year.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Sheridan, III, P.E.
E-Week Committee Chair

Dear Colleague:
This year the Northeast Florida Engineers Week 2010 Committee will host an array of events to raise the public awareness of the contributions that the engineering professions make to enhance the quality of life within our communities and around the world. Engineers Week commences on Friday, February 12th with the Kick-Off Luncheon and concludes on Saturday, February 20th with the Awards Banquet.
On the following pages you will find information about sponsorship packages available along with information relative to the E-Week Committee’s endowed scholarship at the University of North Florida. By selecting one of the following sponsorship packages, you will be helping to support this important event as well as various outreach activities designed to inform the public about the value of engineering, and to inspire our youth to pursue engineering careers.
In these difficult economic times, we hope the engineering community will continue to dedicate itself to support of our students and community outreach programs. The collective creativity, energy, and resources of this community can make a world of difference in effectively addressing the continuing work force development and competitiveness challenges we all face. We thank you for your continued support!
Please contact me if you have any questions or would like additional information. We look forward to hearing from you.

2010 NORTHEAST FLORIDA
ENGINEERS WEEK ENDOWMENT
FUND
Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific and educational societies, and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
We believe and recognize as a professional industry, that to achieve our Engineers Week objectives, we must include education as a key element. To that end, in 2005, in honor of Engineers Week, the Northeast Florida Engineers Week Committee and the engineering community established a perpetual endowment scholarship fund at the University of North Florida. The scholarship fund was established to enhance and facilitate the recruitment of engineering students in Northeast Florida with a minimum endowment goal of $25,000 within a 5-year period. In 2009, through the financial support of local sponsorships, the Committee and the engineering community met that goal!
The University of North Florida has grown remarkably over the years, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2007. Over this relatively short time, UNF has developed a reputation for academic excellence and has become a critical resource to our community.
Likewise, the School of Engineering continues to be engaged in exceptional programs that serve the region, the state and beyond. Currently, the School serves over 400 upper division undergraduate and graduate
students - and over 700 students have graduated with engineering degrees from UNF since a small electrical engineering program opening in the mid-1990s.
With the large majority of its graduates remaining in the First Coast area, the School of Engineering places a high value on developing their students into leaders by providing opportunities for real world experience and emphasizing internship and placement opportunities.
Identifying, recruiting and retaining future leaders of the First Coast region of Florida is one of the major goals of merit-based scholarships at the University of North Florida. For the School of Engineering to become one of the premier centers for engineering education in Florida, it must recruit the best and brightest students and enable them to fulfill their potential.
Today, Northeast Florida is one of the most dynamic and economically viable regions of the country. In order to continue to grow and prosper, Jacksonville and its contingent communities must have a well-educated and visionary cadre of leaders. However, due to financial constraints, many exceptional students cannot afford the costs associated with a college degree.
Therefore, the 2010 Northeast Florida Engineers Week Committee will continue to support the perpetual endowment established by the 2005 Committee’s vision. We will continue to fund this scholarship and other scholarships which will benefit the Northeast Florida community for generations to come.
In 2009, through the financial support from the local engineering
community, the E-Week Committee met the
perpetual endowment scholarship goal of
$25,000 for the University of North Florida.
Our commitment to support our students continues.
